The Godfather of Rhetoric.......2002-11-20
Bruffee began to be studied in the early 80s and his work holds up to the needs of students today. If you want essential development of argument and persuasion, this is the book for you. I used it as a model for a college writing compentency preparatory program and the model is still being used today with great results. The model was also adapted by many educators at many levels with success. It introduced critical thinking and helped students quickly organize their thinking for a variety of writing tasks. There's also a great section on why b.s. gets good grades sometimes. I love it and haven't found anything more concise and practical for helping students write essays.

Set in the context of a sophisticated critique of the privileged epistemological position oachieved by modern science, whereby it both aspires to provide technological solutions for social and political problems while at the same time disclaiming responsibility for the new problems which it creates in its wake, the author looks to the future in an analysis of the new project to apply the latest Gene Revolution technology to India and warns of the further environmental and social damage which will ensue.

Book Description
In Vino Veritas and in truth there are hundreds of options for wine lovers in New York City. Longtime Wine Spectator writer Matthew DeBord sorts through the dizzying array of shops, wine bars, and restaurants to reveal New York's premier destinations-from where to buy wine to where to savor it to auctions for rare vintages and the best places for tastings in town.
For oenophiles who wish to learn more, The New York Book of Wine provides a rundown of the area's best wine societies and classes, including the French Culinary Insitute and the "Wine Avenger." DeSoto also includes the region's top vineyards in the Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes, Long Island, and Connecticut, all of which make for delightful day trips or weekend get aways.
With additional information on varieties, pricing, decanting, and storing wine, The New York Book of Wine makes the perfect gift for every person who enjoys a glass of wine.
Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff, but a Little Light.......2004-03-27
Being a native New Yorker I was delighted to learn of this book. One of things that I hate is being in Manhattan and not knowing where to find things, like a wine bar for example. Now at least I have the beginnings of where to go to have a wine by the glass or purchase my favorite bottle of Shiraz. The book is set-up so that it is a VERY easy, breezy read. I picked this book up last night at the mall and was half-way through it my the time I got home. Being a wine nut, not just a hobbyist, I can tell you that the listing of specialty wine shops in NYC is worth the price of the book. It also gives the best description, one that I have been touting for years, of NYC, on page 67, that I have ever read. I do have two minor complaints with the book. Firstly, it is a bit light on the wine bar scene. I know of at least five more wine bars that definitely needed to be included. My other complaint is that it is a bit light when it comes to substance. Points are made in just a few sentences and that's it. Certain topics and sidebars throughout the book definitely could have been flushed out in greater detail. This I found very surprising given the fact that the authour is an ex-Wine Spectator contributor. Their writers usually go on and on so I found it ironic that the text was a bit laid back. I also found it funny that the author said that the Wine Spectator is the best wine magazine out there. Would he have said anything different? Overall, a good effort.
Jam-packed with knowledge.......2004-03-16
This is a well-researched and highly entertaining read. For someone who loves wine (like me) but can't remember from one dinner to the next what to order (also, alas, like me), it is an excellent guide. It fits in a pocket (I'm not going to carry Hugh Johnson around) and is chock-full of great tips & no-nonsense info about enjoying wine in and around and from New York. But the best thing I can say about the book is that the author seems to love wine for its own sake, not because he's trying to prove anything or show off. On the first page, Debord writes, "The decision to go snobby is yours and yours alone. I advise against it." This sums up the philosophy of "The New York Book of Wine" and sets the tone for a volume that's as witty and tasty as it is underpriced.
A good read...informative and helpful...February, 18, 2003.......2004-02-19
I found this book to be well written, informative and educational. It was a good read and will be very helpful in my future wine purchases even though I do not reside in New York. The author's writing style held my interest and the information in Chapter Six should help people interested in a wine weekend realize that they are not limited to Napa.
I am the Author of this Book.......2004-01-06
My name is Matthew DeBord and I am the author of THE NEW YORK BOOK OF WINE. I welcome any feedback readers can give me and hope that at least some folks will take the time to review the book here on Amazon. Good and bad are both greatly appreciated.
By the way, my rating is only on this review because Amazon requires that the stars be assigned.
Book Description
A sought-after packager of high school students shares highly coveted strategies to help parents get their kids into the country's most competitive colleges
Did you know? A child's guidance counselor can help reverse a deferral. A parent can help get a child off a waiting list. And there is a way for students to back out of Early Decision once they've been accepted.
Based on the controversial insider information Elizabeth Wissner-Gross has gleaned from working for years as a successful packager of high school students and from interviews with heads of admission at some of the nation's most competitive colleges, this book helps parents answer questions such as: Can an application be sabotaged by a competing student or parent? How do colleges really know if a student applies to two or more schools for Early Decision? Is it possible to prescreen a teacher's recommendation? As well as the biggest question of all: Of the tens of thousands of highly qualified students that graduate each year, why should a college choose yours?
Targeting the college-educated parents of today's college-bound teenagers who seek to gain a proven edge in the highly secretive and seemingly arbitrary college admissions process, What Colleges Don't Tell You (and Other Parents Don't Want You to Know) reveals 272 little- known, unconventional, tried-and-true secrets to help parents get their children into the most competitive schools of their dreams.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable Consumer-Oriented Reference.......2007-09-15
Having recently gone through the college admissions process with two children, we've looked at most of the books in this category. What sets this book apart from the others is the fact that the author is unquestionably on the side of you, the consumer. Ms. Wisner-Gross lends transparency to the business of college admissions, and offers many suggestions reflecting her ability to think outside of the box. This book was extremely helpful to us, and a clear favorite.
Getting Your Child Into a Top School.......2007-09-02
The presentation emphasizes the importance of monitoring grades from the
9th grade onward because this provides a good predictor of future performance. In addition, parents should track grading rubrics. Student
practice is important to solidify knowledge of the technical subject areas. i.e. math, science and foreign language
Sometimes, group study can make tedious work more palatable and manageable. The author provides a list of excellent colleges that do not require an SAT score. i.e. Bates, Bowdoin, and Harvey Mudd engineering school. Olin College provides a free engineering school. The author recommends that students provide a resume, chart and no picture.
Essays should provide a sincere recitation of your accomplishments and what you plan to contribute to the college. Applicants should demonstrate a passion for the area of study in the application. In addition, areas of strength should be emphasized.
The authors really do not explain the pitfalls of selecting a top school.
First of all, what is a top school? Is it a place with a 100% job
placement rate or a place where only PhDs are hired or a place where
top SAT scorers are highly sought out? In my own experience, it is
important to visit the institution of choice and talk to current and
former students. Do students seem to be happy? Are they overworked?
Do teachers teach or do student teachers take up most of the teaching
load because professors are too busy publishing and doing research?
These are all areas to be investigated because college is a multi-year
commitment in time and money.
The author doesn't say so; however, a top school consists of the following:
o excellent job placement/prospects in your major area of study
o good preparation for graduate school work, if ever contemplated
o comprehensive teaching by academic types or working professionals
o a current curriculum (although professional licensure courses of study
are mandated by state or federal law)
o a reasonable cost for the value of the education provided
o a roster of accomplishment by the alumni
i.e. Professional licensure, PhD or graduate education, publishing,
inventorship, identification by the print media
There are things you do not want in a top school. i.e.
o professors or teachers who delegate too much teaching to assistants
o instruction that is too esoteric or theoretical
o an institution that doesn't link the education to professional placement
o too much adherence to bell curves and rigid grading rubrics
o teaching that assumes too much prior background in the subject matter
o an environment which is not conducive to learning
o an unaffordable cost for the education
A great help!.......2007-08-31
I, like some of the others was a bit put off by the title, however, I bought the book after browsing through the chapters because of the practical and pragmatic advice given.
I did not know that the information that you give for your child's interests in one part of the college application would have a direct bearing on how he/she should write their essays - that one should support the other.
I also did not know how important the essays are on a college application until my son came home with his guidance counselor's form and ALL the questions were in the form of an essay directly taken from the college application.
If my son comes in with well-thought-out essays that showcase him and what he can offer a school, is he to be considered "packaged" because his parents bought a book that helped him?
The negative comments (which are in the minority and really should not have the prominent position they do on this website) really do not reflect the majority of us that have found it invaluable.
For smart parents who want to even out the playing fields.......2007-08-06
Parenting of teenagers has become very polarized in America, as the reviews for What Colleges Don't Tell You seem to demonstrate: There are the involved parents who maintain close relationships with their teenage children, and there are parents who prefer to let their teenagers bring themselves up with minimal input or guidance--independence at all costs--who are outraged by high-achieving families that work together.
Parents who value the art of parenting right into the teenage years can gain a lot from What Colleges Don't Tell You. The book is very respectful of teenagers and tells parents how they can guide and remain close during their children's high school years. But for those who think that parenting ends when their kids become teenagers--or for kids who resent any parental involvement--the book will probably seem foreign and even threatening.
Parents of high achievers will be especially impressed with the insights that this book provides. Admission to the prestige colleges is made more accessible and more logical for hard working, dedicated students. Wissner-Gross helps the reader to understand the current admissions system, which apparently is no longer based solely on GPAs and SATs; she helps the reader understand the many subjective credentials--and how a dedicated student can earn them--in a world where the "haves" prefer to keep these factors secret.
Adults who believe in blind obedience--the high school is always right--may find this approach to college admissions daunting. But more educated parents who prefer to have the playing fields evened out will particularly appreciate the book's in-depth discussions of grades, college essays, and studying.
I don't recommend this book for conventional thinkers who have stereotypical teenage children and prom queens who lack focus and academic commitment. Benefiting from this book probably requires child-centered families with lots of rapport. It seems targeted more toward today's involved parents, rather than 70s style do-your-own-thing parents. I strongly recommend this book to families where parents and their teenagers work as a team. Other people won't get it. I wish it had been available back when I was in high school.
Like Having a Personal College Advisor!.......2007-08-04
This book was released as my daughter was entering 12th grade...I wish Eliabeth Wissner-Gross had written it sooner! In "secret" #14, she discusses some academic competitions and programs which are highly regarded by colleges and are less well-known than Intel and Westinghouse. We had never heard about them, even though we're in a highly academic school district and this is my second child to pass through it! Her unique perspective on how to approach and prepare for standardized testing is detailed, extremely informative and may actually improve your relationship with your college-bound kid! Every section of this book provided valuable information that made us feel like we had a personal college advisor!

Customer Reviews:
Jessica pledges with Thetas.......2005-03-28
Jessica moves out of the dorm and in with Mike. She gets a job at the Coffee House as a waitress to pay for the bills. She skips Theta meetings just to be with him. Elizabeth is dating William White, but can't stop thinking about Tom Watts. Celine is jealous of Elizabeth and is in love with William.
Warning: This Book is Addicting! GREAT!.......2004-09-10
I couldn't put this book down! Jessica moves in with Mike, and Steven is furious. Elizabeth starts dating William White, but she can't stop thinking about Tom. Celine and Elizabeth are still at each other's throats. Winston is going through fraternity hazing- and it's horrible! Overall, a great book! I think that it's really interesting about Jessica & Mike. P.S The Thetas, the sorority Jessica is pledging to, hates Mike, so Jessica has to hide the fact that she lives with him. When she skips meetings to hang out with him, they get mad!
Great book!.......2001-08-29
This book is really great. Jessica Wakefield moves in with her boyfriend, Michael McAllery. She spends lots of time with him, but soem time with the Thetas. But he wants her to spend all ehr time with him. Elizabeth Wakefield is working with Tom Watts on a hazing story. She has now gotten over her ex-boyfriend Todd Wilkins, and has romantic feeligns for Tom. Winston is getting hazed by the Sigmas, but is his hazing all fun and games, or dangerous? Celine Boudreaux knows that William White has an obsession with Elizabeth. Celine wants William all to herself, and despises Elizabeth. But William want ELizabeth desperately. This book is great!
What Your Parents Don't Know #3.......2001-04-28
This, among the other first 11 books, is one of the best in the series. Jessica decides to move in with her boyfriend, older badboy Mike. But living together doesn't really go over so well with her sorority/school life OR her nosy brother Steven. Jessica makes some decisions about the sorority in this book, and has to get a job to make ends meet. It is nice to see a character concerned with money in these series...it adds a dose of reality to the book! Meanwhile, Winston is putting his life on the line over and over again to join the fraternity, who has decided separately that Winston is a joke. Elizabeth is involved with a campus-athletics scandal, and is getting closer to Tom all the time...but William White is always in the wings, pursuing Elizabeth steadily. It's not as good as the first book, but it's definitely humorous!
Part funny, mostly intriquing..........1999-09-23
When is Jessica going to grow up & realize that being an "adult" doesn't mean falling for a "real" guy & moving in with him when you hardly know him? If I were in her shoes, I'd be figuring out what she wants to do with her life careerwise. But it's too bad that she doesn't give it a thought & thinks college life is about parties, guys, & fun & games & ridicules Liz for being too studious. It's good that even though Liz is homesick, she gets on with her schoolwork & starts mapping out a career plan for herself. Unfortunately, Francine shouldn't be so quick to hook Liz up with another boyfriend so quickly when Liz is still recovering from Todd. I think Liz ought to be single for a while & just have a circle of friends. It's great though that Liz has the part-time job at the news station. Speaking of jobs & responsibilities...I wondered if by the title, are the parents of the characters footing the whole tuition or do the students contribute at least part of the tuition?
The parts about Winston made me laugh. Poor Winston is trying to fit the image of the "real" male & trying to get into the campus' "cool" fraternity, but the guys there are giving him HELL. I get the feeling that the "cool" guys secretly were jealous of free-spirited Winston. The part about Winston's hangover was funny the way it was described. I kind of like Winston; it's too bad that Jessica & her friends ridiculed Winston as a "nerd" in high school just because her doesn't fit the "cool" image. I'm glad Denise liked him & accepted him the way he was. In some ways, he's a bit like Abby Stevenson from the BSC series & Beth Barry from the Fab Five series...funny & dramatic.
