Well-done.......2000-05-25

This book is well-written and was extremely helpful to me. The author, who also has started the PIT oragnization, has provided a resource that otherwise seems to have been missing in the world of job-searching/unemployment. The book goes through the different emotions and practical steps that someone laid off form work must (usually will) go through on the way back to employment. Actual stories of people who where downsized or just plain laid-off, and the description of steps that they took on the road to reemployment (effective networking, collaborative job-searching, and effective interviewing) are inspiring and insightful. In all- a worthwhile read.

I got the job!.......1999-03-22

Career Bounce-Back! was an invaluable tool. When I lost my job, I couldn't believe that it could happen to me. One minute I was angry, the next minute depressed. My life was "out of control." I thought it was all my fault, until I read Career Bounce-Back! After reading the book I realized that you could manage through the emotional wave that unemployment brings, and also learned the importance that networking plays in the re-employement process. A play for all souls..........2007-08-20

i am not a big fan of reading plays (they are meant to be performed after all), but this one is an exception. i found myself relishing line after line, enjoying the fact that i could pause and reflect on all of the tightly packed poignancy scattered throughout this work. sir thomas more is the hero's hero...of the messiah or socratic martyr sort (though he himself says he is not the "stuff" martyrs are made of), the man of true principle. he is one of the characters our generation unfortunately will only ever know through works of fiction. a person who does not (and cannot) separate their actions from their moral convictions, as the two are inextricably bound together, as are oxygen and lifeblood.

i am reminded of a quote by confucius: "at 70 i could follow my hearts desires without transgressing moral principles"...thomas more is THIS brand of sage. and we all have a lot to learn from him, even long after you discard the religious drivel.

it also doesnt hurt that he punks every single member of H the VIII's royal court (hehe).

Magnificent.......2007-06-11

I first saw the movie, and was riveted by the dialogue. The clarity of thought, the elevation of principals above self is awe-inspiring. I rushed out to buy the book (the script of the play), and read the wonderful dialogue over and over. Many of the lines simply cry out with logic and integrity, and some have found a place on the wall of my office.

Whether one characterizes Thomas Moore as a saint, a statesman of unbending principals, or both, his strength of character, intellect, humanity and general goodness shine through with brilliant clarity.

Thomas More - A Man for Our Season.......2007-01-15

This is an amazing play about an incredibly holy man, which employs its words in a profound manner. Thomas More, the beheaded lord chancellor of England under Henry VIII is the patron saint of attorneys, civil servants, politicians, and statesmen:
* "When statesmen forsake their own private conscience for the sake of their public duties...they lead their country by a short route to chaos."
* (In response to objection over his use of the word, "heretic":) "It's not a likeable word. It's not a likeable thing!"
* (Pointing to himself:) "this is not the stuff of which martyrs are made." WRONG!
* "The nobility of England, my lord, would have snored through the Sermon on the Mount."
* (To his betrayer, Richard Rich, attorney general of Wales:) "Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world...But for Wales!"
* "I Die His Majesty's Good Servant, but God's First"

Good, quick read.......2006-12-06

I had a few hours in between flights this Thanksgiving and brought this along. It's considerably deeper than your typical airport reads, though since it's a play you can finish it quickly.

Bolt does an outstanding job in the Preface talking about his motivation, his direction for the character and persona of Sir Thomas More. What's most interesting I think is how he handles the character development. I won't ruin it for you, but I think it needs to be said that this is not the story of a man changing because of events but almost the inverse.

Language is very easy to read and understand, though some passages will certainly benefit from rereading just to consider what the message is, what Bolt is trying to get across. I loved the book and would love to see an adaptation of it.

Deafening Silence.......2006-09-20

From biblical times to the present, it is evident that power corrupts those in charge. One of the landmark examples of this in history is Henry VIII's murder of Sir Thomas More. Truly if you are not with the powers that be, you are against them.

Henry VIII's attempts to dissolve his marriage on account of his wife's inability to bear him a son, falls on deaf eyes in Rome. Even while the pope will not allow divorce, Henry hopes his loyal subject Thomas More will condone it. Sir Thomas More's silence is deafening to the king. Unable to stand the silence of this influential, the king's servants drum up charges to treason to rid the king of his problem. During this process, we see a man growing from a lawyer to a saint. He will not place the sovereignty of God behind the king.

I would give this story 4 1/2 stars because it sacrifices too much of Thomas More for literary purposes. This is bothersome because of the initial slow pace of the story. Still Robert Bolt does a commendable job telling this story of integrity and allegiance to God.

Truly a Man for All Seasons.......2001-08-14

Having been a physics teacher, I have purchased this calendar for the past 10 years. It is a treasure. The wonderful pictures of Albert Einstein and the quotations have served to stimulate many classroom discussions and are an inspiration to students, teachers and everyone. I have saved the pictures and used them time and time again. Each year I can hardly wait for the new calendar to arrive.

A Great Book About Bob Dole.......2005-12-09

This book was written in mid 1994 before the mid-term elections returned Bob Dole to the position of Majority Leader of the Senate.

Bob Dole has since stepped back from the center stage of politics since his failed run for the Presidency in 1996. Nonetheless, it is one of the best books about one of the giants of the Senate.

This book covers Bob Dole's early years in Russell Ks and his near-fatal injury in WWII that led him being partially handicapped. It covers his political rise from county attorney to US Senator and when he served as Gerald Ford's VP candidate in 1976.

This book covers Dole's controversial re-election bid for the Senate in 1974, an election in which his credentials as a bare-knuckled political brawler were born.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know who Bob Dole was and what he accomplished while on the national stage. I think many will be surprised that he wasn't the dour and inflexible conservative that many tagged him as.

Lastly, this best part of this book is its length. At 270 pages, it's an easy read and a good book for someone who doesn't want something too deep or complex.

This plainspoken and utterly candid autobiography takes readers through Elders' poverty stricken childhood in the tiny town of Schaal, Arkansas where Elders (called Minnie Lee Jones in those days) grew up in a tiny cabin with neither electricity, nor running water. A sharecropper's daughter, Joycelyn was forced to miss school during planting and harvesting seasons, yet she excelled and won a scholarship to college in Little Rock. It was there that she saw a doctor for the first time in her life and -- after a speech given by Edith Irby Jones, the University of Arkansas Medical School's first black student -- realized her vocation. When in 1956 Joycelyn entered the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, she was the sole woman in a class of one-hundred and one of only three African-Americans.

Elders' inspiring public life is matched with a moving private story about which she is forthright in Joycelyn Elders, M.D. The tragedies of her life which were previously hidden are touchingly told here -- her brother Bernard's murder by a deranged man, her sister Patricia's death in an automobile accident (Patricia had been a professor of linguistics and Bernard was Arkansas' first African-American veterinarian). She speaks frankly about her husband Oliver's battle with depression, the near-catastrophic effect it had on their relationship and how, together, they triumphed over it. She openly acknowledges her son Kevin's battle with drugs while explaining the political circumstances surrounding his arrest.

Elders' experience as director of Arkansas's health department was pivotal in shaping her views and her mission. As she toured the state visiting towns not unlike the one in which she was raised, she saw pregnant twelve- and thirteen-year-olds; girls abused by their fathers and grandfathers; domestic violence; malnourished infants; unmarried women with five and six children; full-term pregnant women who had never seen a doctor; sick elderly people with no way of getting to the few clinics scattered around the state. The experience transformed her. Elders fought hard to make changes and won. During her term she raised childhood immunization rates, set up sickle cell anemia screening and a comprehensive women's health program, established home hospice care, and built or renovated dozens of public health clinics, many of them in schools. When President Clinton called on her for the office of surgeon general, she was the most visible public health official in the country.

The triumphs and travails of Elders' 18 months in Washington D.C., detailed here for the first time, are fascinating reading, chock-full of inside information. From the ordeal of her confirmation hearings and the frustration of having her words twisted and repeated out of context, to the final blows: the arrest of her son Kevin for selling drugs from a taped "buy" recorded several months before and saved by Clinton's political opponents for the opportune moment -- within days of her speech on legalization and her comments on masturbation which were used by her own administration to finally do her in. They could not handle the truth!.......2007-07-27

I loved this book. It was exciting and very sad at the same time. Teaching our children about their bodies is very important. Dr. Elders dedication to her community and the mentally disabled young women needs to be applauded. When she said to the young lady "I want you to have two healthy babies" it made me want to cry, that was a very loving act. All you have to do is listen to the news and read the papers to know that the sexual behavior of politicans is why the had to keep her quiet! I say like the other reader, "YOU GO GIRL!"

It scares me that this women become the Surgeon General.......2002-04-16

I bought this book because I had heard many things about Elders that made me think, "God Lord, how did she ever become the Surgeon General, she sounds like a radical sex obsessed idiot." then i read the book, and it confirmed my previous hypothesis. And from watching Fox news, I've also learned that she is promoting a book about how pre pubecents should engage in sex and be given condoms in school. She has also previously tried to have Grade Schools teach MASTURBATION to children. She sounds like a lunatic who came into power not from intelligence or morality, but because of other reasons that I will not say because people tend to get up in arms about certain topics. I Found the book to be badly written, and though she only CO WROTE it, I can only imagine how it would have been if she had written by herself...

Dr. Elders memories are both inspirational and heartbreaking. She is truly a woman who came up from the depths of despair and poverty by her own bootstraps. She never backed down from those hypocrites in Washington and Arkansas and in her book she makes no apologies for anything that she has said or done. I feel like I know her better now that I've read her book, it is truly heartwarming and worth a read. The writing was well done and very well presented. This book deserves more than five stars. You go Joycelyn!!!! This book has made me believe that I want to dedicate my life to helping those of our country who are less fortunate, helping them will concrete goals and ideas, instead of empty promises that leave them hungry and homeless with no hope. Joycelyn is truly an American hero, and one of the greatest women of the century
