    Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Engaging, Easy to Use, Effective.......2003-02-22

I've also attended several in-person workshops with the author, and her book is as approachable and effective as she is. As the head of training for my company, I can attest to the fact that most often, only student reaction is measured after training, i.e., "Did you like the training?" That's not the point. Training isn't entertainment (though it's nice when you enjoy it!) The point of training is to ensure your students learn something, especially when the company has invested a good deal of money in the cost of the training, the cost of having students away from their regular jobs, and often the cost of flying them out and housing them during a longer course. Review activities are absolutely essential to "bed down" what's been taught, and Mattiske gives literally dozens of ways to do this WITHOUT resorting to multiple choice or other written exams. The review activities she teaches in this book are fun but more importantly, they actually are effective and require only a little preparation on the part of the trainer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource after attending training.......2002-12-13

I recently attended an advanced trainer development workshop put on by the author, Catherine Mattiske and this book has been a great way for me to take more of her ideas back to my training job. In the workshop, I was able to experience Catherine's high energy level with continual review activities first hand. Her approach is seamless - - and you really don't realize how much she has you review throughout the day because it's woven into the program and all done in a fun way. However, in looking back, I know our group was able to get through more content because of her approach to reviews - - and it ensured everyone was on board the whole time.

She has some great course models in the book that I'm finding useful as I re-work many of my programs to include more reviews. I was guilty of saying 'yes, I do reviews in my class' when I really only did them at the end of the day. Catherine's approach makes for much more robust training design to ensure participants know! A simple, straightforward approach to higher retention in the training room.

I have been a training professional for over 15 years and have trained across many different industries. The biggest challange trainers face is sustainable results after candidates leave the training room. This book gives a new and insightful dimension on how to produce continous results through review. For any one sick of the same old same old ideas, this book is a must have in any trainers or managers toolkit.

5 out of 5 stars Practical & easy to use ideas.......2002-05-28

With more and more pressure on training departments to perform, we are always looking for ways to make our training more effective - and looking for ways to measure its effectiveness. I found this book helped me really focus on the true measure -- did my participants learn the material they came to learn and are they ready to apply it. The author gives tips on using interactive reviews throughout a training course so the participants are continually showing their understanding of the content - and building up their confidence in using it.

While there are a lot of 'trainer games' books out there, I found the approach taken in this book really helped to use activities and 'games' in the overall design of a course and to support training objectives rather than just use games for games sake. The book offers a good balance between theory and tips. The chapter on A-Z of Training Reviews is sure to give any new or seasoned trainer some valuable ideas to put to use.

I found the approach is practical and easy to put to use right away. I've just purchased copies for all of the trainers on my team.

    Book Description

Seeds, as small and unobtrusive as they seem, are an essential part of the life cycle of plants. In addition, they are useful for indentification of plants and, in fact, are often superior for that purpose that other parts of a plant.

That's because seeds have distinctive characteristics, tend to outlast all other plant parts, and vary little within a species--unlike other parts such as leaves.

Since weeds interfere with the growth, harvesting, and quality of crops, Linda Davis says, the ability to identify weed seeds before they are indavertently planted affords an economic advantage. Other weed-control measures--herbicides and mechanical removal of unwanted plants--are enormously costly in comparison.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 600 photographs and drawings, this handbook provides information about the seeds of 280 species of weedy plants of the Great Plains, including ones commonly found in crops, rangeland, lawns, and along roadsides.

This is the only book available that covers a large number of Great Plains plants. For each species it provides a high-quality color photograph showing minute details, a black-and-white life-size silhouette (against which actual seeds can be compared), and a full description. An easy-to-use set of finding lists facilitates identification of unknown seeds. Both scientific and common names are used throughout, and an illustrated glossary clarifies technical terms.

For those of us who are either professionals, amateurs, or curious people. As greater and greater interest grows in discovering and growing native grasses and forbs - this book becomes more valuable. No key is required , and even if you don't know the species, it is possible to get a genus.

Thes book should entice readers to start their own seed identification collection. With a 10 power hand lens one can become an expert in an old but newly emerging area of interest.

      Book Description

1877. This book is founded upon a French work by M. Flammarion which enjoyed considerable popularity. It contained a number of interesting accounts of the various ideas, sometimes mythical, sometimes intended to be serious, that had been entertained concerning the heavenly bodies and our own earth; with a popular history of the earliest commencement of astronomy among several ancient people. In the early days, astronomy was so mixed up with all the affairs of life, and contributed so much even to religion, that a history of its beginnings is found to reveal the origin of several of our ideas and habits, now quite unconnected with the science. This book helps students of today become effective managers of tomorrow by truly understanding organizational behavior. This book is for undergraduate and graduate courses in Organizational Behavior and Management. Taking a managerial approach and demonstrating the application of behavioral science within the workplace, this text emphasizes the role of management as a core integrating activity.

This long established market leader has set standards that few texts have met in terms of accessibility of writing style and clarity of presentation, by making unfamiliar theory relevant, easily understood and logically applied to the world of work. Over the course of almost 20 years, the book has guided many thousands of students through a clear, insightful and analytical introduction to their management studies, acting as a valuable reference thereafter.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive OB and Management book.......2005-11-19

A very comprehensive book on Organizational Behaviour and Management. Being UK (the author taught at the University of Portsmouth) in origin it has a distinct international flavour, while brininging out the key points. Clearly as a result of years of research and collaboration by the author, this book has it all. My only negative comment, if it is in fact negative, is that there is some degree of repition of points within a chapter... some may see this as reinforcement though. A good read.

        Book Description

This book helps managers move beyond the idea that the future of business will resemble the past and allows them to use scenarios to imagine multiple perspectives. The concepts of organizational realities, experience, and beliefs are explored to encourage and embrace change in business organizations for a successful future.

        Download Description

"This book is about organizational survival: the reasons why organizations do not always survive, and what can be done about it. Survival means creating value for stakeholders, and the survival problem starts with uncertainty, change and the need for organizations to adapt to shifting needs and market conditions. The key question is 'Why are organizations slow to change and adapt?' Unsuccessful organizations are distinguished by their failure to overcome thinking and behavioural flaws at personal, organizational and community levels. In this book, we explain what these flaws are and how the scenario approach helps senior managers and organizations to overcome them. Our approach is based on reasoning, research, real world observations - and a long track record developing scenario-based thinking, combining the most effective elements of the many scenario approaches that have been tried over time.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-03-02

This book disserves itself by purporting to be merely about scenario planning, although it covers that subject thoroughly. In fact, it's one of the most lucid, interesting examinations of fortune and folly you will ever read. The recapitulation of disastrous episodes at a handful of once-great companies shows just how little inclined the gods are to spare the proud. Closed minds and entrenched habits of thought managed to afflict even such a venturesome New Economy firm as Yahoo! Originality and experimentation bless even companies in humdrum industries, such as packaging. Captivating anecdotes and illustrations are, in fact, the meat of the book. The scenario planning analysis, while solid, is less convincing than the cases themselves. At times, the book shows the weaknesses that are probably inevitable when so many authors share creation. It tends to meander and, now and then, loses its way in jargon-choked thickets. But, we assure you, the clarity of the cases redeems it and makes it valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Scenario conversations as agents of change.......2003-08-06

The key theme of this book is that the appropriate use of scenario thinking is a highly effective way of catalyzing organizational change and, in particular, minimizing the risk that the organization will suffer due to learning disabilities such as 'group think' or a variety of other flaws in organizational thinking.
The focus is therefore on the process by which the management group can improve their ability to shape their future, through the way in which they engage with the creation of scenarios, and in strategic conversations about their implications in the context of the 'business idea' (competitive stance and advantages) of the organization.
This book represents a consolidation and further exploration of ideas first put forward in van der Heijden's Scenarios: The Art of Strategic Conversation. As a successor, it does not have the impact of the first book, and it goes into issues of learning disabilities to a level of detail that can be tedious to those who are familiar with these issues. None the less, it is very useful in reinforcing a sound appreciation of the value of scenarios and the importance of the process by which they are generated and used.
There are very useful summaries at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book. My main criticism is that the authors do not seem to have quite worked out whether they were writing a practical guide for business people or a text for students.

          Book Description

The theory of complex responsive processes and its implications for those working within organizations has become the focus of increasing interest in recent years. This is in good part due to the success of the editors' previous groundbreaking theory, Complexity and Emergence in Organizations.

In this innovative new series, the editors have focussed on what these ideas mean for practitioners tackling real organizational issues, and how they can be used to make sense of the changes and challenges which organizations must face. This book introduces and explores the possible meanings of the idea of "working live." It makes sense of the sense-making experience itself, drawing attention to the way ideas and concepts emerge "live" in all conversations in organizations. An appreciation of the open-ended, improvisational nature of ongoing human communication becomes key to such an understanding. The chapters, all written by experienced managers and consultants, explore:
          · How various forms of improvisation in social interaction can inform ways of appreciating how those links are forged
          · How these insights can illuminate the challenges of managing, developing and changing organizational practices

In Experiencing Risk, Spontaneity and Improvisation in Organizational Life, Shaw and Stacey explore, through the real-life experiences of practicing managers, some of the emerging themes and practical insights that can be drawn from an improvisational view of organizational life. With contributions from managers in both the private and public sectors, the book explores human communication skills and interactions to provide a unique exploration of "working live". It will be of interest to advanced students and practitioners.

This new edition builds on the strengths of the previous edition, and offers students a concise but broad coverage of the main theories informing organisational behaviour. The book moves from the individual to the organisational and the global context, and critically examines the three themes of change, communication and conflict in each. It promotes critical evaluation of theory and practice to enable students and managers to interpret and deal with organisational problems. This book is suitable for students requiring an introduction to organisational behaviour on business and management undergraduate degrees, post-experience and postgraduate courses, and professional courses. It is also designed as a focused and lively general reader on the subject.

                        Book Description

Since Heraclitus change has baffled, perplexed and bemused. Organisational change is no exception; such change is an empirical fact but the extant conventional literature largely fails to enhance our understanding of this phenomenon. Conventional theories, models and methods do not possess the means of facilitating real understanding for either practitioners or researchers.

This book is a contribution to the development of theory and method on organisational change through interactions with real people in real organisations. Grounded in a theory of reality, based on a particular conceptualising method, and illustrated with reference to real case studies, the authors explicate how to do both theory and method on organisational change in a novel, concise and very readable way. Reality is constructed by integrating four key dimensions: facts, logic, values and communication; these provide the material for the introductory chapters with the overall understanding of method emerging as one works through the remaining chapters. Insights from mainly continental philosophy and social science are used to illustrate the key arguments throughout. Conventional approaches are usually concerned with definitions and outcomes; in contrast this book strongly emphasises the change process itself, the discourse of change with respect to both real actors and observants, and how new realities are constructed. The book admirably fills the gap between the "what is" of conventional theory and "how to" of a much more pragmatic critically modernist approach to both studying and doing organisational change.

                        Book Description

An Indian-born foreign service officer killed in the U.S. embassy bombing in Nairobi, Kenya. An Austrian-born doctor who volunteered her medical skills in Japan, South Vietnam, and Iran. A French-speaking woman from a remote village in Gabon. These are just three of the women whose stories are told in this book—women born in other countries who, through their marriages to American diplomats, became representatives of the United States. While they experience immigrant life in a unique way, they share the challenges faced by other women in cross-cultural marriages away from their own countries.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written and insightful.......2002-06-21

As a career foreign service officer, I only wish Margaret Bender had written this wonderful book 30 years ago. Written in insightful, precise and unemotional prose, it provides invaluable insights into the many challenges facing foreign-born women who marry American diplomats and the different ways - successful and not so successful - in which they deal with them. It should be mandatory reading for all Ambassadors and senior foreign service officers who, like me, should have been far more sensitive to the personal and professional issues with which these women and their diplomat spouses must deal. There are wonderful stories of personal courage, determination, and love, along with examples of great resilience, creativity and humor. I was particularly fascinated with the stories of how the parents decided which language(s) they would speak with their children and how varied were the results, both linguistically and emotionally.
Like America itself, the diplomatic service is ultimately richer for the infusion of these women into the community. Margaret Bender has told their tales well and faithfully, and this book should move us all to appreciate these women and extend our hands in welcome.

5 out of 5 stars diplomatic life with a twist.......2002-06-07

For anyone with an interest in what it is really like to be a diplomatic nomad, this book is a must. Bender has interviewed more than 30 diplomatic spouses. All of them are foreign born women married to American diplomats. Though these women's birth status adds an extra twist to their experiences, much of what is stated in the book can apply to all female spouses of diplomats, and probably many male spouses as well.

The women quoted in Bender's book, though, are especially brave, because for love they have left the familiar and ventured into the distinctly foreign. Not only do they have their new diplomatic postings to contend with, but also the adoption and integration of their husband's cultures. While American-born spouses might eventually feel that they have gone home when they return to Washington for a tour, these foreign born spouses do not even have that relief.

For anyone contemplating life as a foreign service spouse, this book is highly recommended. I would also recommend it to the employed diplomats, who, after reading it, may understand better what their spouses have to experience with the lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Long Overdue.......2002-06-05

In a world where inter-cultural and inter-ethnic marriages are becoming more and more common, it is hard to believe that more hasn't been written on the topic. Although this book definitely focuses on the unique experiences of official spouses in the foreign service, it has much broader relevence. The stories of women who made definite choices to leave their homelands and become Americans is also timely given our current reexamination of "who is an American?" in post-September 11th America. I finished this book with much respect for the ongoing challenges that these women face year after year; as new ramifications of their marriage decisions emerge. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
