Book Description
This tax book is a dyamic, unique blend of print-based and Web-based instructional material that gives you continued up-to-the-minute coverage thus bettering most tax and accounting texts that are out of date before they arrive in the bookstore. Designed to be dynamic, it combines print and web materials in order to respond to rapidly changing tax material while helping students think about and, more importantly, use the WWW for academic, learning, and tax research purposes. With its unique blend of web materials, that allows for a more concise print form which is an excellent value for your students. It also bridges the gap between texts that are heavily law and/or theory oriented (with little practical material) and ones that are fill-in-the-blank with no guidance as to where to look for appropriate tax authority (i.e. Code or Regulations). Schisler & Niswander recognize theoretical and the practical needs by providing a solid foundation with research identifying key topical coverage requested along with tools, such as using the WWW, helping to locate the appropriate tax authority. Shisler & Niswander deliver updates via the WWW to complement the printed material.

The book includes comprehensive reference sections and appendices summarizing some useful mathematical results. Numerical problems with their solutions are provided at the ends of chapters. This is an invaluable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in science and engineering who would like to learn more about holography and its applications in science and industry.
Customer Reviews:
Good first book on holography .......2006-07-02
This book is intended as an introduction to the subject for science and engineering students as well as people with a scientific background who would like to learn more about holography and its applications. A comprehensive bibliography and references to original papers identify sources of additional information.Numerical problems and their solutions are provided at the end of each chapter to clarify the principles discussed and give the reader a feel for the numerical aspects of each topic.
Chapters 1 through 3 review image formation by a hologram, the characteristics of the reconstructed image, and the basic types of holograms while the next three chapters discuss available light sources, the characteristics of hologram recording media, and practical recording materials. Chapters 7 through 9 describe methods for the production of different types of holograms for displays, including multicolor holograms, and methods for making copies of holograms, as well as a chapter decribing the production of computer-generated holograms. The next two chapters review some of the most important technical applications of holography, such as high-resolution imaging, holographic optical elements, and holographic information storage and processing. The final three chapters of the book describe the techniques of holographic interferometry, including the application of digital electronic techniques to holographic interferometry.
Unfortunately, trying to describe a 3D process in the 2D pages of a book is a challenge - one that Hariharan does not always successfully face. Thus this book reads a little like the voice-over on a TV science documentary. One expects the narrative to be accompanied by dynamic footage demonstrating the process being described. Because there is no such footage, and because the illustrations that do appear in the book are sparse and not particularly compelling, it feels as though the text is not quite getting its message across.
The author assumes that the reader already has a fairly extensive background in wave optics, using, without first defining, such terms as "dichromatic", "Bragg diffraction", "Pockels cells", and even "photoresist". He includes four appendices that try to address deficits that readers may have in wave optics and Fourier transforms, but it seems naïve to believe that someone without much prior knowledge in these areas can pick up everything needed to understand the book in a few two-page supplements. Also, the exercises at the end of each chapter mainly involve plugging numbers into formulae, and are therefore not very illuminating.
In spite of its several shortcomings, this book is extremely comprehensive, well-researched and informative. It is possible to read the 155-page text in a matter of hours for a general overview of holography, but you could devote a month to studying it in detail in order to gain a deep understanding of the material. I still think it is the best of the serious introductions to holography for scientists and engineers, given the lack of competition in this niche.

An Introduction to Optical Stellar Interferometry
ASIN: 0123252180 |
Book Description
This book is for those who have some knowledge of optics, but little or no previous experience in interferometry. Accordingly, the carefully designed presentation helps readers easily find and assimilate the interferometric techniques they need for precision measurements. Mathematics is held to a minimum, and the topics covered are also summarized in capsule overviews at the beginning and end of each chapter. Each chapter also contains a set of worked problems that give a feel for numbers.
The first five chapters present a clear tutorial review of fundamentals. Chapters six and seven discuss the types of lasers and photodetectors used in interferometry. The next eight chapters describe key applications of interferometry: measurements of length, optical testing, studies of refractive index fields, interference microscopy, holographic and speckle interferometry, interferometric sensors, interference spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The final chapter offers suggestions on choosing and setting up an interferometer.
Customer Reviews:
Good For Beginners But Needs Beefing Up on Techniques.......2007-01-01
Okay, this is a good primer for those who lack an adequate background in optics and lasers. The chapters will highlight the important concepts to understand interferometry. The lacking part is the actual discussion of various techniques which can be used for various materials. But, I would probably recommend this anyways since everyone needs a refresher. Otherwise, you should definitely read up on applications listed in the references. Hariharan has another book also on interferometry which is about the same but presented in a different light so to speak. This is a pretty standard technique so you will have no trouble to pick up where this textbook lacks. Also, you should really cover this short overview on optics by reading any undergrad textbook such as the Pedrotti text.

Bearing a startling hologram of a skull on its front cover, this volume is a complete, up-to-date reference guide to its subject. For the uninitiated, the first two chapters give a thorough introduction to this complex technology. There is also a chapter on available educational facilities, plus a glossary of technical terms.
For the professional holographer, the central part of the book covers materials and techniques in detail.
Also included is an international listing of over 1000 holography businesses and personalities, plus a 10pp bibliography, including French, German, Portuguese and Russian, as well as English language publications.
As publishers, Ross Books are in the unique position of offering advertising pages which are collector's items in themselves, in this case from American Bank Note Hologaphics (4pp), Light Impressions and Max Image."

Book Description
This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.
The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.

Book Description
IARC and the US National Institutes of Health have now been joined by the French Ministry of the Environment for the development of this programme on the establishment and validation of methods which can be used for the decontamination of wastes contaminated by chemical carcinogens and the treatment of spillages with such compounds. Eight volumes have been published dealing with aflatoxins, nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrazines, nitrosamides, haloethers, aromatic amines and a series of antineoplastic agents (IARC Scientific Publications Nos 37,43,49,54,55,61,64, and 73). In this volume, the ninth of the series, methods of degradation are presented for four commonly investigated mycotoxins: ochratoxin A, citrinin, patulin and sterigmatocystin. In view of new findings, a re-investigation has also been performed for aflatoxins and these compounds have been tested in one of the methods. The five methods presented are described in an ISO style format. They can be applied to various waste categories and three of them to spillage treatment.

Book Description
Mycotoxins, from the Greek "mukes" referring to fungi or slime molds and toxin from the Latin "toxicum" referencing a poison for arrows, have earned their reputation for being potentially deleterious to the health and well being of a consuming organism, whether it be animal or human. Unfortunately, mycotoxins are a ubiquitous factor in the natural life cycle of food producing plants. As such, control of the potential impact of mycotoxins on food safety relies heavily upon accurate analysis and surveys followed by commodity segregation and restricted use or decontamination through processing. The purpose of this book is to provide the most comprehensive and current information on the topic of mycotoxins and assuring food safety. Chapters represented in the book reflect such diverse topics ranging from occurrence and impact, analysis, reduction through processing and plant breeding, toxicology and safety assessments to regulatory perspectives. Authors represent a range of international perspectives.

Book Description
56th Meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA)
This volume contains monographs prepared at the fifty-sixth meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Five mycotoxins or groups of mycotoxins that contaminate food commodities were evaluated at the meeting: aflatoxin M1, fumonisins B1, B2, and B3, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 and HT-2 toxins. The monographs in this volume summarize the data that were reviewed on these contaminants, including information on metabolism and toxicity, epidemiology, and analytical methods for their measurement in food commodities, sampling protocols, effects of processing and control. Based upon this information the Committee assessed the risks associated with intake of these mycotoxins. This volume and other documents produced by JECFA contain information that is useful to the Codex Alimentarius, government and food regulatory officers who are responsible for controlling contaminants in food, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological and analytical laboratories, and universities.

Title: A way of dealing with molds & Ochratoxin A in coffee: the European Union is currently in the process of regulating mycotoxins in food products. Mycotoxins are a group of toxins, which have in common that they can be produced by specific molds. Coffee is included in this process, together with a series of other food products, because of a mycotoxin called Ochratoxin A (OTA).

BUT, this is certainly not a biography. Bierce is not always fun to read. If you're looking for a fun biography, look elsewhere. If you've read enough of Bierce's writings to know what you're getting, give this book serious consideration.
Bierce in his own words.......1998-11-11
This is the first book where the reader is taken through Bierce's life in his own words. From his experiences in the Civil War until his mysterious disappearance into Mexico in 1913, "Sole Survivor" tells Bierce's tale through his stories, newspaper work, and personal correspondence. A must-have volume for anyone interested in the great American journalist and author.
