Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book on a company's hidden assets.......2003-10-10

An impressive business book on the "exotic" topic of intangible assets, the importance of which has so dramatically increased during the last decade, especially so for knowledge-based companies. What makes the book special is that it strikes a fine balance between practical insights, case studies and applications on the one hand, and state-of-the-art theoretical concepts on the other. Because of this, it has a strong appeal to both practitioners and theorists.

The book has an ambitious and multi-faceted focus: It not only addresses the scope and functions of intangible assets, but it also discusses related topics such as accounting for intangibles; the implications of intangibles for internal and external reporting; and the foundations of a new management system. The book is carefully investigated, well-written and nicely structured. Several interviews with leading specialists such as Leif Edvinsson (a pioneer in the area of Intellectual Capital management), Baruch Lev (an expert on intangibles accounting) and David Norton (co-creator of the Balanced Scorecard concept) provide also a helpful bridge between the practice and theory of managing intangible assets.

I strongly recommend this book if you want to have a better understanding of the comprehensive role and implications of a company's intangible assets. It is also a helpful resource for students and professionals in the areas of strategic management, financial performance management and strategic accounting. It will challenge and help you to discover new ways to create business value.

          Book Description

A little boy living in a distant country is lonely. He needs a bed of his own, a room of his own, a house of his own -- and most of all, a momma and poppa of his own. But he must travel far to get them. He must fly for a day and a night through blue skies and clouds and stars before he comes to a place he can call home... with his loving new adopted family.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars cute story about adoption.......2007-09-12

Flying across the world to become part of a new family can be scary but wonderful at the same time, as told by a little boy in this story. I liked that it does star a boy rather than a boy, like many adoption stories do. The story is written in simple understandable language and the illustrations are soft but filled with detail to interest young readers. The little expresses some of his feelings about adoption and I am sure many young adopted readers will find themselves relating with his thoughts. This is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book!!.......2007-04-07

My 3 year old daughter adopted from China loves this book, she is a little too impatient for the written story nightly but requests the book over and over for the pictures-while she makes up her own story to go along with the pictures. She loves going on about the mommy and daddy in the story and how she had a picture book sent to her and then she flew on a plane just like in the story. She makes this story her own.

5 out of 5 stars The pain of coming home.......2001-09-09

Children adopted overseas adore this story, regardless of their country of origin. It is especially helpful for children adopted at an older age.

Having a home and a permanent family is wonderful, of course. But older children don't know that when they come home. They are often angry at being uprooted and taken to strange new places, where people speak a foreign toungue. They are understandably frightened. So many new things in the early days assault their senses that days can seem like a lifetime.

This soothing story eases the pain of that transition. It helps them to know that they are wanted, waited for, and loved, even before they arrive. It eases the terrible pain of the transition. If you buy no other adoption story for your internationally adopted child, make it this one. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars "One of the Best Adoption Books I've Found".......2000-11-19

I have an adopted daughter from Korea and we have many, many books on adoption. This is the best one I've found - it describes so well the experience my daughter, and we had, and makes me cry every time I read it. I've found it helpful not only for her but for her friends and classmates to understand her experience.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on adoption.......2000-03-09

As a parent of two wonderful Korean boys, this book is a fantastic story of a child's travel to be with his forever family. I read this book for the children's story at my church on my son's first Coming to America Day (the anniversary of his arrival) and the response was wonderful. My sons really enjoy listening to this story and it has provided an avenue for us to talk about their adoption adventure and the plane ride from Korea to the United States. I high recommend this book. It is a must own book for parents of international adoptees.

            Book Description

A dozen dolphins in a Key Largo research center have been tortured and killed. When an outraged Thorn investigates the crime, he is beaten so brutally that he becomes paralyzed from the waist down. After checking himself into a state-of-the-art pain clinic run by a childhood friend, Thorn uncovers some horrific experiments being performed on handicapped Army veterans which are somehow linked to the disappearance of a female DEA agent. As Thorn finds out that his paralysis is no accident, he also finds himself the unwitting subject of a brutal experiment, in which someone will go to any length to cure his own twisted pain.

In the bestselling tradition of classic crime writers like Elmore Leonard, James W. Hall writes engrossing, intelligent thrillers which time and again wow listeners and critics alike.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasue and Pain.......2006-02-24

Although NOT for the faint of heart or squeamish this incredibly powerful and visceral thriller cements James W.Hall's place as one of the absolute best writers around. His ability to create incredibly complex characters and so throughly convey the trials they have to endure give so much emotional depth to his novels that simply classifying them as thrillers or mysteries does not do him justice. Combine this with his gift of being able to transport the reader to the point of actually feeling as if you are there in the Florida Keys and you have the makings of a great novel. My only warning would be don't start this book if you have other plans (you'll postpone them!) or want a good nights sleep. This book will stay with you long after you have finished the last page-enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best book ever .......2004-12-09

I read maybe 8 mysteries within the course of a year(not counting the works of Lawrence Block). If a book ever gets to point where I can tell what is going to happen next the author is not doing the best job possible.

And the ending was a little weak as well

That's not to say that I didn't like the setup or the characters, some of whom were absolutely hilarious, especially Pepper and her odd fascination with...well peppers.

I made the same mistake I always make I read a book in a series out of order. Have to go back and read the entire series now.

Pain. There is no more lively sensation than that of pain; its impressions are certain and dependable. Marquis de Sade (1740-1814)

What a riveting book! This is my first James W. Hall novel and it I loved it. His strong, bold, vivid characters, often border on the audacious and bizarre. In "Red Sky at Night" Hall pulls you into worlds of paralysis, paraplegics and pain. And as Marquis de Sade said "there is no more lively sensation than that of pain". The Key West setting combined with the madness, murders, mayhem and macabre characters, makes this book a top ratebeach read. Strongly Recommended

            5 out of 5 stars THRILLING..........2001-11-18

This book is one of the most exciting I've ever read. As an aficionado of mystery (Ruth Rendell is another of my favorites), I give this book a five star rating. In terms of twists and turns it's right up there with Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris and Mercy by David L. Lindsay. It also has a deeply Floridian atmosphere and a few moments of black humor, a la the late lamented John D. McDonald. Don't make any immediate plans if you get ahold of this book; you won't want to put it down. A word of warning to the faint of heart: this is a medical thriller and has a few very dark moments. But the ending crackles and is MOST satisfying. Kudos to James W. Hall; keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars No Wimps allowed in Reality, Florida........2001-02-25

"Red Sky At Night" will take you all the way down before letting you have another breath of air. This story is hard to understand if your life has been easy and candy-coated, but should resonate with all those (painful) real world experiences. Consistent and evenly paced, "Red Sky at Night" goes way beyond what others portray. Just be carefull!

3 out of 5 stars The Sky Then and Now..........2006-08-27

This is a story of love lost (and found) in unexpected places. Set during the early years of WWII, the brilliant scientist in Germany whose speciality is secret radar research. He was sure that because fo his expertise he would be safe and allowed to do his thing, but he was Jewish. It was suspenseful with his attempt to escape. Many came to America and helped us to win that war. Have you looked up into the night sky lately? It is simply gorgeous when the sky is clear and black and most of the planets are visible along with the multitude of stars. Have you seen a flying star -- I have once. Justin and I used to set our alarms to go outside to watch for Halley's comet; alas, we did not ever see it. But now, Pluto has been deemed no longer a planet. The noted astronomers have discovered some which they named with odd numbers, but they superseded Pluto in size and so that association composed of educated astronomers have said "No Way" to a part of our past. I started to call Geoff, my astronomer son, and ask 'how could you let this happen,' but he would only reply "Oh Mom, I didn't do it." Julie lived in England during the war years but was collaborating with the French underground.

The bombing of London had not occurred, and it was merely the calm before the storm of destruction. In France, the criminal in this story did not kill a bear, but his viciousness could vie with that of Troy Gentry of the country duo Montgomery Gentry. The French criminal was interested only in his personal gains no matter who got hurt. Julie was living a dangerouslifestyle, because the idea of war seemed remote and unreal in the United Kingdom at that time. We never know when we will be hit next.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2000-04-02

Held onto this book for many years, and finally read it and was thrilled. I could almost feel that I was there during the war. The characters felt real and as if they were people I wanted to know. Couldn't put this book down, and I have searched for her other novels and loved the ones I have read so far. A must read!

                  Book Description

It is the year 3014. A pivotal battle looms. Branded as murders and forced into hiding in the jungle planet’s deepest recesses, pilot John Soledad, biologist Rachel Sanders, and nurse Donna Applegate survive on their wits, frequent field remedies applies by Donna, and occasional late-night raids on the colony’s storage warehouses for needed supplies. While the trio struggles to survive, another threat—one more virulent than the jungle’s life forms—threatens the very survival of the new colony. Rachel’s venom-induced visions are telling her something—revealing to her the terrible nature of the danger—and arousing what seems like memories of things and events ancient, dark, and monstrous.

3 out of 5 stars Not THAT great.........2007-08-31

                        The good things:
The format is nice. It's a ring binder with a flap extension, which makes it easy to find the location you want.
It has a lot of hikes and suggestions for hikes.
                        The bad things:
The maps ar few and far between, and are useless for hiking. There are a few large scale overview maps, and very few maps of the hikes themselves. The hike maps are too large-scale to be of any use for individual hikes, and have no topographical information on them. You get an idea of where the hikes are in relation to each other, but as to using them for hiking, forget it. Buy a map before you set off.
                        Conclusion:
A great book to get ideas about where to hike, but do not use this as your only resource for hikes.

                        Book Description

Alice likes her life, but she senses things are changing. She gets a little bored by her best friends Elizabeth and Pamela's constant chatter about clothes and makeup, and sometimes she feels excluded from their conversations. Her relationship with Patrick is becoming more complicated, too.

From her cousin Carol, Alice learns that there are no easy answers to some of her questions about life. Then a school experiment and a new friend with a painful secret reveal some unsettling truths about the world Alice lives in. Growing up is even trickier than Alice thought -- is she ready for the challenge?

                        3 out of 5 stars A bit too mature.......2005-07-05

I thought this Alice book was a bit too mature for the age level of the readers, and not nearly as much fun to read as The Grooming of Alice. Plus it seemed more preachy than entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a teenager or preteen girl.......2004-05-29

Well, I read a lot of Alice books, and all of them are great. I like this book a lot. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor wrote Alice 's life as a eighth grader, with all the changes come to her, it' s very excited book. It tell the real life of a teenager girl, and it also talk a lot about these question that teenager or preteen girls may have but never being answered. It's like a guild for the teenager or preteen girl of what is like to be 14, and a eighth grader.
Read it and you will love it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Alice on the outside.......2004-01-06

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor(author) really describes what it is like to be a teenage girl. Naylor puts all of the problems of being a teenager together, your date getting ill for a big dance, your dad humiliating you by interupting the most intense kiss you have ever had, and not having a mother to talk to about stuff you need a girl to talk to about. In this story all of that happens to Alice when her life gets more complicated then ever. This hilarious must-read will spark the interest of any Jr.High girl.

                        3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2002-08-15

This was definately not one of the best alice books, i think that it was all alittle too exaggerated; from the discrimination week to alice's lesbian friend being bullied. The way that Alice adressed the situation of homosexuality disturbed me, I dont agree with homosexuality and was disappointed to find that Alice backed it up 100%, by the world's standards it's "natural" but morally, i believe it's wrong. When Alice ponders the thought of being a lesbian, she thinks to herself that it's something that you just cant help, as if you were born with it, but there isn't even a shred of medical evidence that proves homosexuality is hereditary or a trait! I really think that someone like Alice would pick up on something like that instead of going on with what the world thinks is right. Overall, the book was entertaining, but has some questionable content.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the *Alice Series*!.......2002-07-09

I really liked this book. I also really like the Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. In the beginning, this book is about Alice's curiousity. As it goes on, her school promotes some type of an activity all week, dealing with hair-color and prejeducey. One of Alice's friends gets sexually abused by a fellow student, and it's up to Alice to help her to her feet. Near the end, you start hearing about a school dance coming up, and Alice is set to go with her boyfriend, Patrick. But things don't turn out as planned...

I highly recomend this book for the older or mature audience because basically, the Alice series is tremendous. The author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor knows what shes doing. This and the books in this series are truly worth reading. This one is one of my favs in the series. G out and read it!

4 out of 5 stars Building Trust with Outsiders.......2005-02-18

This is an unusual and valuable collection of short biographies by many well known Irish writers such as Maeve Binchy and Bernard Farrell, journalists such as Gene Kerrigan, Ann Daly and Seamus Dooley, singer Christy Moore and poet Michael O Siadhail. Each author introduces us to an outsider they know and value, and we can see the contribution these outsiders have made in the authors' lives. These stories challenge the reader to replace the common reaction of fear and/or contempt and indifference for outsiders with respect and enjoyment of difference.
As with many such collections, a few contributions are a little weaker than the others, but the overall standard is excellent. I strongly recommend the book for those who enjoy short stories, for students of Camus' The Outsider (1955), and of social science.
