Book Description
The most influential researchers and writers in the field of HRD outline the ideas and issues that will dominate theory and practice.
Critical Issues in HRD brings together ten essays by the most respected academics and executives in the field (including Patrick Combs, Michael Marquardt, Doug Whittle, Hallie Preskill, and Reid Bates) reflecting on the challenges and opportunities facing researchers, educators, and professionals alike. The collection includes contributions on such diverse topics as emerging paradigms within the discipline, integrating cutting-edge technologies into training and learning initiatives, new methods for measuring and evaluating HRD programs, and defining HRD's role in forging ethical practices and social consciousness. Rich in ideas, this book will set the agenda for both research and practice in the field of human resource development.

The Place We Live: Ecology in the Upper Midwest.......2001-08-18
When it comes to describing the plants of a locale with all its ecological intricacies, it could be said that John Curtis did it first and best. The only way he could have done it better was to expand beyond Wisconsin's boundaries and write "The Ecology and Ecosystems of the Midwest." Still, and after 42 years in print, this book remains the definitive source for understanding the relationships among the plants of bogs, forests, prairies, lake dunes, and the other habitats of the Upper Midwest. Inset range maps, photos, lists of plants with their "commonness ratings (my term)" in the different habitats, brief histories of human uses of the habitats, and descriptions of the environment (soils, hydrology, etc.) complete the picture. Growing up in Michigan and working for years in Minnesota and the rest of the Midwest, I can attest that it serves these locales reasonably well, and currently there is nothing better. It would work in Iowa, northern Illinois and Indiana, and southern Ontario as well. As a child of the information age, I admit that the presentation of graphics, charts, etc. is not as sharp as it could be. Recent advances in ecology and statistical computing power unavailable to Curtis make some of his analyses a bit dated. Curtis was also somewhat doctrinaire in his view of plant species distributions across ecological gradients (a Gleasonian individualist, for those who wonder), leading him to ignore the important distinction between prairies on sand versus heavier soils, for example. All in all, this book is an excellent primer for anyone with the desire to become more familiar with the intricate composition and workings of midwestern ecosystems and, along the way, feel just a little more at home here.

Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2007-06-04
I'm so glad I stuck with Lonely Planet (LP) for my 4 day trip to Colorado where we covered everything from Rockies to Colo. Springs, Denver, Boulder and also did rafting and hiking.
This book is great and lists everything that you need. Accomodations, maps, rafting companies, tourist traps, restaurants, etc. Very nice, exactly what you would expect from LP. Although I haven't tried other states yet, I'm looking forward to making a trip to Yellowstone soon ...
Thanks lonely planet!!
Cons: In case you are new to the lonely planet style of writing, let me warn you that if you are looking for a book which is heavily edited and proofread, then you will be disappointed. This lonely planet book is written in a style which is reminiscent of the old LP books - it seems more like a brain dump of everything the writers encountered. They then tried to put most of the things under appropriate headings and did a fair job. This is what I expect from a 'pack and go' book like LP so it works for me. YMMV.
A Norsemans Journey to Rocky Mountains.......2000-02-08
I had the opportunity last year to visit the Rockie mountains. Mainly Colorado and a fast trek throught or should I say to Montana. Having bought Lonely Planets books on both Australia and South Africa earlier (trips that didn't come to fruition, yet) and also having enjoyed some of the tv programs from the same people I thought this would be the best bet for my trip. And it sure was. Now most of my stay in this erea was in Denver so maybe I could have just bought a book on Denver, but as much as I enjoy travel books they tend to be a bit expencive and this offered more value to me. An the books offers more than adequate information on Denver and it's immideate surroundings. Later on the book gave me what information I needed during my brief stay in Montana. The book also informed well about the strain of arriving in the Mile High City (Denver) when you are a lowland dweller, so it didn't come as a shock. Good thing that ! I'm going back to this region of the US, you can count on that and this book will come along on the next trip as well.

Customer Reviews:
Best hiking in the Rockies in one small package.......2006-08-02
My husband and I used this book as the primary reference for three separate hiking & backbacking vacations over the past four years in the Rockies: Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park + Maroon Bells + Holy Cross + Mt Zirkel Wilderness in Colorado, Grand Teton Nat'l Park + Yellowstone in Wyoming, and Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana.
The hikes covered in this book really are the cream of the crop for these areas. The table up front, together with the nice tabs throughout the book help find hikes by area, interest, and difficulty quickly. Doesn't swamp you with quantity, you know that each of these hikes is exceptional--perfect for those of us travelling into the area who have only a week or two to soak up whatever we can. There's even color pictures from some of the most scenic hiking spots in the book to help get you excited to go and give you a little taste of what to expect for that region. Each hike has a map and description with enough detail to almost ensure that you don't go wrong. There's also good information on nearby towns and facilities, local campgrounds, and some detail on permits and when to go.
Only issues: failed to mention that a lot of trails in Glacier may not be accessible without ice ax and crampons until mid July due to snow (certainly we weren't prepared for the trips we really wanted to do when we were there in late June, and the Ptamigan tunnel doesn't open until it has been cleared using dynamite every year), and we did count on being able to buy fuel and other supplies in a town recommended by the book and turned out that the grocery store and camping goods store had almost nothing (this could have been that the book was 4 years old by this time).
I still give the book 5 stars for its excellent coverage of the entire Rocky Mountain area which inspired us to travel to places we might not have otherwise, its usefulness in actually helping us figure out which hikes to do once we got there, and that I would pick it over any of the other books we used for our trips. I picked up Hiking in the Sierra Nevada also by Lonely Planet on the strength of this book, but haven't really tested it yet.
Lonely Planet is the best overview of Rocky Mountain hikes.......2006-05-04
I first used the LP guide in 2005 to safely get me through a solo 6-day hike. (Highline Trail / Ptarmigan Tunnel Loop in Glacier National Park.)
It is excellent. The best guide for the entire Rocky Mountain region.
Once you decide on a specific hike, compare against the available local guidebooks. For Glacier National Park, for example, this is still the best option.
Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park - Spring, 2003 is not bad.
Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks - Erik Molvar, 1999 - the most widely available guide, is surprisingly weak.
Lonely Planet has the best maps. And the succinct style makes it easy to find what you are looking for.
Disappointing.......2005-07-13
I have used Lonely Planet guides for several years, and have found them to be uniformly excellent -- except for this one. An experienced climber, backpacker and hiker, I recently completed a loop hike described in this book (Needle Mountains, Winnemuche Wilderness in Colorado). Surprisingly, my hiking companion and I found the time estimates given for each section of the hike to be laughably incorrect (i.e., at least 50% too short in duration). I then checked time estimates given for other hikes I have done in past and found the same problem (e.g., backpacking into the Cirque of Towers in the Wind River Range from the Big Sandy trailhead takes 6 hours -- pure rubbish). I am now quite suspicious of the book's accuracy, and wonder whether anyone who wrote the book actually undertook the described hikes. I was also quite annoyed with the gratuitously sniffy descriptions sprinkled throughout the text, such as "the poor food and urban sprawl characteristic of the Rocky Mountain region" -- remember, however, that the book's authors are British. Save your money for better books written by local writers/hikers who actually know the trails.

A new pet robot!.......2006-06-24
A few scenarios are screwed up a bit as Packard missed keeping the continuity of flow when you choose to call Dr. Hopstern and wait for him. When you wait for Dr. Hopstern directly, then you call a friend Dr. Vivaldi who ends up offering for you to go with her and your computer, Conrad, to either a cryptological trip to France or a dolpin trip to Hawaii. When you choose to take either of these trips, there's no indication of your cancellation of the service call or any mentioning of Dr. Hopstern even looking for you. Maybe Packard figured this wasn't important, but it is important enough to mention because otherwise you lose some of the flow of the story and it sounds more contrived. This book will need to be changed if it were rereleased now like some of the other Choose Your Own Adventures recently because it mentions going to Russia as a possibility implying that we still have problems with Russia specifically when it would be better aimed for writing about Iraq, or possibly even North Korea or China. It is less likely that Packard may be interested in republishing his books as he seems to have sold his rights to R.A. Montgomery, who came out with a movie for this series, which was a great idea. I do not like how R.A. Montgomery started renumbering the books when they are the same stories he used in the old series. Like book #1 is by him now instead of the Cave of Time by Packard. Also, the books I've read by Montgomery just don't seem to be as flowing or creative as the Packard ones I've read.
Other possibilities in this book include becoming a millionaire or billionaire (makes you wonder if Jay Leibold of Choose Your Own Adventure #96 got his idea from this maybe even though it's pretty practical to come up with it on your own), travel to Butea or in a hot air balloon, fly with NASA to explore new worlds, capture some high time crooks, or even say goodbye to your supercomputer. It's interesting how they make you the reader, seem like only an average user when you had won a programming contest to get the computer as a prize. Maybe Packard could've said something like you won a brand new computer by winning at the game show, Wheel of Fortune, or something like that instead. As you read Packard's books, you may some notice some peculiar references here and there to something in Princeton specifically, or some specific department elsewhere, which probably indicates how much of a world traveler he is, and what interesting and creative ideas he can come up with for his books.
