CPA - ARE.......2001-05-24
This book provides a good summary of the CPA Accounting & Reporting examination. It saves me a lot of times to look for different reference books for a variety of topics covered in the examination.
It is a very good book to study before the examination. Q & A on each section also help to test my understanding. Sometimes, I would fall into a trap that I thought I understand but actually I don't. This book can resolve this type of problems.
Also, it is also a good tool to do the recap. Just revisit the book one week before the examination without doing the exercise and it does help you to remember those key points.
Overall, this book is good value for money.

Book Description
Our work life is filled with emotions. How we feel on the job, what we say we feel, and what feelings we display--all these are important aspects of organizational behavior and workplace culture. Rather than focusing on the psychology of personal emotions at work, however, this study concentrates on emotions as role requirements, on workplace emotions that combine the private with the public, the personal with the social, and the authentic with the masked. In this cross-cultural study of "emotion management," the author argues that even though the goals of normative control in factories, offices, and shops may be similar across cultures, organizational structure and the surrounding culture affect how that control is discussed and conceived.

Book Description
A great deal of research has recently been completed on behavior and the organization of work, most of which has viewed it from an ethnocentric perspective. In this work, Erez and Earley show how this is insufficient to develop a global theory of work behavior--it necessitates the inclusion of a cultural perspective. Solidly grounding their work in the fields of psychology, management, and anthropology, the authors propose a new theoretical framework utilizing individual's self-concept as a means of linking cultural beliefs and social interaction to emergent work behavior. The book includes specific recommendations for structuring work environments and managerial processes to match cultural practices and enhance productivity in the workplace, making it an essential reference for scholars, students, and professionals.

Book Description
Face, Harmony, and Social Structure continues author P. Christopher Earley's investigations of the differences among people within organizations in different cultures. The concept of "face," as set forth by Earley, is a reflection of the individual's struggle for self-definition and understanding, of which a key component is a positioning of self relative to others is a social setting. Face is at the heart of social behavior and provides a consistent linking mechanism to understand behavior across cultures. Earley uses this concept of face as a basis for examination of cross-cultural organizational behavior from an individual's personal perspective. In this work, he develops a mid-range theory of individual behavior, self-concept, and interpersonal process in an effort to explain cultural differences in organizational settings. He sets up a cross-level model, and then attempts to provide a single coherent force--"face"--as an engine driving the entire system that can be used to integrate various social and organizational mechanisms in predicting people's behavior. This understanding of how and why people behave certain ways is a critical tool for studying the impact of individual behavior on the functioning of organizations. Earley's work represents a new theory of self-presentation and face within a cross-cultural context, integrating a cross-level approach ranging from the individual to the organization and to the societal levels of discussion. Face, Harmony, and Social Structure is a truly interdisciplinary work that brings elements of psychology, sociology, and anthropology to organizational studies. It will be illuminating reading for professionals and scholars of management and organizational behavior, as well as to academics in cross-cultural psychology and anthropology.

Book Description
Despite recent interest in the effects of restructuring and redesigning the work place, the link between individual identity and structural change has usually been asserted rather than demonstrated. Through an extensive review of data from field work in a multinational corporation, Catherine Casey changes this. She knows that changes currently occurring in the world of work are part of the vast social and cultural changes that are challenging the assumptions of modern industrialism. br br These events affect what people do everyday, and they are altering relations among ourselves and with the physical world. This valuable book is not only a critical analysis of the transformations occurring in the world of work, but an exploration of the effects of contemporary practices of work on the self.

A lustrously illuminating, scholarly work...Recommended........1999-03-24
Based on research, this book draws analyses of the relations between people's experiences of work and the effects of those experiences on the self-psychological processes (their sense of identity), and on the broader social organization. The author zeros-in on how high technology forms of work and organization are affecting the individual's self-perception. This is a lustrously illuminating, scholarly work, intended for those with a keen interest in the self concept and social organization. Includes a good bibliography. Book Description
For subsistence farmers in eastern Kentucky, wealthy horse owners in the central Bluegrass, and tobacco growers in Western Kentucky, land was, and continues to be, one of the commonwealth's greatest sources of economic growth. It is also a source of nostalgia for a people devoted to tradition, a characteristic that has significantly influenced Kentucky's culture, sometimes to the detriment of education and development. As timely now as when it was first published, Thomas D. Clark's classic history of agrarianism prepares readers for a new era that promises to bring rapid change to the land and the people of Kentucky.

Customer Reviews:
A very well-written natural history of the Ice AgeSouthwest.......2004-01-25
Author Elias is an expert in Ice Age ecology, and has published several books on the subject. This is one of the best. Beginning with a four-chapter section on why it is important to study ecological systems of the past, the book takes its reader through the various Ice Age fossils of the Southwest, the types of material in which they are found, how they are dated, and nicely sums up this data with a chapter on how this data is pieced together to provide a tableau of past ecologies in an area.
Attention then turns to various national park localities in the Southwest, including Canyondlands, Grand Canyon, Big Bend, and various Anasazi ruin parks. Each chapter discuss the various extinct animal finds in and around the named park area, and also includes information on past climates, flora, and effect of human cultures. Among the vanished animals expertly discussed are the short-faced bear, shrub ox, American lion, American camel, and two varieties of ground sloth. Locations of finds for each of these creatures are described and shown on generalized maps.
I was impressed by the depth of research and the excellent writing style. The maps are somewhat vague, however, and I was disappointed in a lack of color photography. These are small detractions from the overall quality of the book, and I would heartily commend the book to anyone with an interest in the Ice Age, paleontology or ecology, or in the Southwest. If this describes you, then I especially recommend that you buy the book before you go to any of the named parks on a trip.

Customer Reviews:
Makes you want to visit South Africa!.......2007-05-10
I have to say that I had no real desire to visit South Africa until I got this book and now it's on my travel list of possible destinations along with Hawaii, Antarctic, Canada, Alaska, Italy, Spain, France, etc. The book is beautifully written, researched, and explained well by the co-authors Francisca Kellett and Lizzie Williams. On the cover, Michael Palin CBE said "Great traveling companions, constantly entertaining and they know what they're talking about." Anyway, the colored photos of nature and culture in this book are first rate. I used the pages about apartheid to teach my students about it in literature class. South African writers like Doris Lessing CH, Nadine Gordimer (Nobel prizewinner 1991) and J.M Coetzee (Nobel Prizewinner) are all wonderful to read but Lessing wasn't mentioned. I wished they had mentioned Rhodesia but this book is tour guide and not a history book but it does delve in the dark history of apartheid. It does give you warnings about how to be careful when you are visiting South Africa. I still would love to visit South Africa and desire one day to go and see not only the natural beauty, enjoy the beaches that look incredible, and see wildlife in it's natural environment.

Customer Reviews:
A five star travel companion: full of stories..........2001-05-15
we just came back from our south africa tour using the footprint handbook to zig zag more than 10 000 kilometres through the country. this book is a five star travel companion: very much up to date in sections like accommodation addresses, price categories, timetables - and the footprint kept us entertained as well. With little personality stories and well researched history background. the best thing for us: footprint calls it a handbook and not a guide book and that is what you need if you are self sufficient travellers like us in our vw kombi. look up the little sleepy karoo towns you are passing through on your way to major tourist destinations and even there you will find interesting details about the country. also well researched are the route descriptions if you are tending to go off the beaten track and for instance go off exploring some of the winding roads, that thomas baines designed more than 100 years ago along the garden route. if you use this book as a reference book while having your own ideas what to see and where to go, you won't get lost. instead you will get an idea what living in the rainbow nation is all about. one regret: a pity that the cool story about johnnie, the cave man, who explored big parts of the oudshoorn cango caves, got shortened in the new edition.
Footprint leaving all others behind..........2001-04-27
It is rare to find such a well written, comprehensive and detailed guide. The maps are excellent and cover more than just the essential. Information is as up to date as you can get it - this guide gets reprinted yearly. I also understand that from the time editing is finished it appears on the shelves within 3 months. The print is smallish and the paper is thin. However, the information is absolutely incredible - about 8 times more comprehensive than its nearest rival! From hiking trails to detail on less frequented places. This is deservedly the no. 1 selling book for South Africa - probably as timetables of trains, busses and Baz Bus is published and it makes trip planning really easy. It is also not written only for budget travellers - it is a book for everyone. Highly recommended.
The best guide to South Africa.......1999-04-18
This is by far the best guide to South Africa. The information is very comprehensive, accurate and informative. The format is a sturdy hardback that's small enough to be easy to pop into your bag but won't get battered easily.

Book Description
This second book in the new Art Encounters series centers on Paul Gauguin's painting Landscape with Peacocks, or Matamoe, and recreates the world the artist found in Tahiti when he painted the picture in 1892. This action-packed South Sea adventure is about a young sailor, Joe Sloan, and his mission to avenge the death of his friend, Robert. Joe searches for Robert's girlfriend, a Tahitian girl named Tehane, to deliver the sad news personally. He doesn't have to go far before fate reunites him with his friend's killer, the Marquesan warrior, Gun, and his evil master, a man known as the White Wolf. As Joe navigates the unknown territory of Tahiti and its people, he finds an unlikely ally in French artist Paul Gauguin. In the course of the story, readers are introduced to Gauguin and his work, the artist's relationships with the Tahitian natives, and his artistic temperament.

Loved It.......2005-03-23
This is such a masterfully written book. Even apart from the fact that it is based on historical events (interesting enough!), I thought the story worked so well as just a damn good story. If you have any interest at all in Paul Gauguin (or even if you don't!), I highly recommend this book.
