        Book Description

The Miller Governmental GAAP Guide is organized into four main sections. The first section (Basic Governmental Accounting Concepts and standards) describes the fundamental concepts and principles that provide the foundation for financial reporting by governmental units. Specific accounting and reporting standards are reviewed in the second section of the book (Governmental Accounts and Transactions). The third section (Funds and Account Groups of Governmental Entities) discusses accounting and reporting standards as they apply to the funds and account groups used by governmental entities. In the fourth, and final, section (Special Governmental Units and Agencies), the accounting and reporting standards applicable to special governmental units or agencies are delineated. The purpose of the Miller Governmental GAAP Guide is to provide a single reference that discusses all the promulgated accounting principles applicable to financial reporting by state and local! governments: GASB Statements, GASB Interpretations, GASB Technical Bulletins, NCGA Statements, NCGA Interpretations, and certain AICPA Statements of Position and Audit and Accounting Guides. These original pronouncements have been analyzed and restated in straightforward language to allow preparers and auditors of governmental financial statements to better understand the original promulgations. To facilitate research, major topics in the text are cross-referenced to the pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. Illustrations, figures, and paragraphs called Observations demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles.

5 out of 5 stars GOVERNMENTAL GAAP GUIDE - MILLER REVIEW.......2000-10-21

THIS GUIDE IS EXCELLENT FOR THE USE OF THE PRESENTATION OF GENERAL-PURPOSE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. IT GIVES DETAIL EXPLANATIONS OF HOW INFORMATION SHOULD BE PRESENTED. THE EXAMPLES GIVEN ARE WRITTEN IN A WAY THAT YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WITHOUT HAVING TO READ INTO THE EXPLANATION. UNLIKE SOME OF THE AICPA BOOKS THAT ARE OUT THERE, WHERE IT READS LIKE IT IS IN SOME OTHER LANGUAGE BESIDES ACCOUNTING. IT IS A VERY PRACTICAL GUIDE TO INCREASE THE CORRECT PRESENTATION OF YOUR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AND ALSO AID IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CORRECT ACCOUNTING FUNCTIONS FOR YOU GOVERNEMTNAL SITUATION.

                        Book Description

First published in 1985, Cattle in the Cold Desert has deservedly become a classic in the environmental history of the Great Basin, brilliantly combining a lively account of the development of the Great Basin grazing industry with a detailed scientific discussion of the ecology of its sagebrush/grassland plant communities. The volume traces the history of white settlement in the Great Basin from about 1860, along with the arrival of herds of cattle and sheep to exploit the forage resources of a pristine environment and, through the history of John Sparks, a pioneer cattleman, illustrates how the herdsmen interacted with the sagebrush/grasslands of the cold desert West.

As the story unfolds on two levels-that of the herdsmen adapting their livelihood to the challenging conditions of the Great Basin's scanty forage, aridity, and fierce winters, and that of the fragile ecology of the desert plant communities responding to the presence of huge herds of livestock-we see the results of a grand experiment initiated by men willing to venture beyond the limits of accepted environmental potential to settle the Great Basin, as well as the often ruinous consequences of the introduction of domestic livestock into the plant communities of the region. The result is a remarkably balanced, astute, and insightful discussion of the grazing industry in the Intermountain West.

This new paperback edition includes an additional chapter that addresses the impact of wild mustangs on the Great Basin rangelands, and an epilogue that discusses changes in rangeland management and in rangeland conditions, especially the impact of recent wildfires, since the book was first published. As concern over the future of the Great Basin's unique rangeland environment and its principal agricultural industry grows, Cattle in the Cold Desert remains essential reading for everyone who cares about this vast and underappreciated region of the American West.

                                            Book Description

One gloomy Fall day, tired of the rat race, Liza and Andy Copeland decided to pack up their three small sons and set sail for distant horizons. What began as a two-year expedition turned into a six-year adventure to 82 countries and a circumnavigation of the world.

JUST CRUISING tells of the family's unique experiences from England to Australia as they sailed through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Galapagos Islands and South Pacific, and of arriving in Australia to represent Canada in the Tall Ships events during the Australian Bicentenary celebrations.

JUST CRUISING gives valuable information on cruising and traveling, and shows the realities of taking a young family along. It includes a 'How-to' section and glossary. A Canadian bestseller it is an inspiration for sailors, travellers, families and dreamers.

During our 1987 voyage to the South Pacific aboard SV Nimbus, our family had the pleasure of joining up with the Copeland family and Bagheera. Our wonderful family times together are brought back to life through the pages of "Just Cruising".

Liza's work is an inspiration to all and accurately portrays the cruising life. The book is an informative guide for couples and families. "Just Cruising" shows how you can harness the wind and, with planning and caution, can safely cruise to remote and exotic lands. It includes wonderful descriptions of destinations, sights and cultures. Two informative 'how-to' sections complete the book.

During our return voyage to the South Pacific in 1999, we were shocked when we were asked "Are you the Nimbus family as shown in the book "Just Cruising"? From French Polynesnia throughout our voyage to New Zealand, we were routinely approached by young and old, eager to discuss the joy of "Just Cruising"! The book is still in date and used by many as a useful overview to read before making landfall. In conclusion, "Just Cruising" is a must read whether cruising the Med, Caribbean or South Pacific!

                                            Good work Liza!

Join the living marionette Pocotristi Sostenuto—better known as Poco—on his desperate search for the missing Rundelstone of Oz.

Poco and his fellow Troupadours travel through remote corners of the magical Land of Oz, presenting plays to entertain the inhabitants. But after a triumphant performance in Whitheraway Castle, Poco suddenly finds himself alone and thrust into a new line of work—as major-domo to Slyddwyn the Whitherd.

Soon, unanswered questions trouble Poco. Who is the mysterious black-bearded stranger repeatedly donning disguises to gain entrance to the castle? What scheme is Slyddwyn the Whitherd planning? And where did Poco's fellow players really go?

To get answers, Poco must find the mysterious Rundelstone—and he better find it fast, or else the sun will never rise again on the hidden Oz kingdom of Fyordi-Zik.

At first, Poco's only ally is a Gillikin boy named Rolly. But even when Ozma, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wizard of Oz join Poco, can anyone hope to untangle the devious designs of Slyddwyn?

The Rundelstone of Oz bursts with magic and surprises right up to its final page.

In The Rundelstone Of Oz, author Eloise McGraw demonstrates the kind of writing skills that have marked her as a three time Newbery honoree. The latest entry into the legendary fantasy world of Oz first created by L. Frank Baum, The Rundelstone Of Oz is a welcome addition that will become as classic an entertainment as any in the Oz series. Superbly illustrated by Eric Shanower in the "Oz Tradition", The Rundelstone Of Oz is a "must" for Oz fans, as well as a highly recommended acquisition for school and community library collections.

Eloise McGraw's THE MOORCHILD tells of the half human Moql, who is unable to shape shift or vanish at will, thus endangering her people, who banish her to live among humans as a changeling. She there grows up feared and taunted by villagers and as she grows up, her repressed memories of her real people emerge and threaten her world.

I recommend this book, because Saaski is stuck between the human world and the Folk world, so she doesn't "fit in" with either. It's a very good book, because there is always something that the villagers are blaming Saaski for, be it "overlooking" a cow or the poor harvests. I really enjoy this genre, because with fantasy, there's no limit to the adventure. I think that anyone who enjoys fantasy and magic will enjoy this book.

After reading Eloise Jarvis McGraw's "Master Cornhill," I searched in vain for the same kind of magic in one of her other novels. Naturally, I looked for other examples of her historical fiction, such as "Mara, Daughter of the Nile," and "The Striped Ships," but though they were informative and somewhat entertaining, I didn't experience the totally wonderful feeling you have when a book is so vivid you feel almost as if you were watching the scenes unfold in front of your eyes. So what a surprise to find that it was in a fantasy, "The Moorchild," which is anything but historical fiction, that I finally found the magic at last.

The characters, though fantastical, leap right off the page and make you care deeply about them. Like the relationships in "Master Cornhill," beautiful relationships work their way in and around this jewel of a fairy tale without at all detracting from the involved and intriguing plot. The world created in this book is wholly imaginary, but the characters seem as real as the people next door. What a joy this book was. With books this vivid, who needs the movies?

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Masterpiece.......2006-07-23

McGraw has done it again and this time with a story so used it makes us all groan when we hear the word 'changeling'.

The unique, practical yet oh so magical tone to the story set it apart from the usual emotional dribble on unacceptablility and children and their differences. This is told from a very factual viewpoint. A viewpoint that is nearly emotionless which gives us a very truthful feeling on how exactly the character of Saaski is half-elf.

Lovely, bold, well-paced and with beautiful descriptions Eloise Jarvis McGraw is truely a great artist. This is a brilliant read no matter what age you are, even non-fantasy lovers will take this classic to heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Delight of Irish Brogue and Changeling Mythology.......2007-05-12

To begin with, this is my absolute favorite book on tape. The story itself is written for a young adult, but sophisticated enough for all ages. It is centered around a young Irish girl who the reader knows to be a changeling, though she does not. As an outcast in her community and in her own family, she retreats to the moors and into her mysterious talent to play strange and beautiful tunes on "the pipes". Together with a befriended young shepard boy, they begin to uncover her origins as a fairy child, and what happened to the human girl she replaced.

The mythology of the changeling is as always, fascinating and a tempting treat to read about, but the real pleasure of this work is the narrator. The Irish brogue is addicting and delightful to listen to, and her voice brings every character to life, particularly the young girl. I strongly encourage anyone to get hold of this wonderful treasure and enjoy it for yourself and with your children.

"The MOORCHILD by Eloise McGraw, Narrated by Virginia Leishman --- A Newbery Honor Boos." "Moql's mother is Folk, one of those tiny fairies who live hiddden from mere mortals. Her father is human, through, so she cannot make herself invisible---a necessity for playing pranks and stealing food from the townspeople. Her carefree way of life abruptly ends when the Folk decide that she will be a changeling, traded for a human baby whom they can enslave. Banished from the life she loves, Moqul, now known as Saaski, must learn to fit in with the people around her. Haunted by snatches of her fading memories and tormented for being different, Moql ultimately finds herself in danger. What can she possibly do to save herself and repay the human parents who have so lovingly protected her? Although set against the backdrop of a charming medieval setting, this awardwinning book addresses the fear, sadness, and danger involved in being different---issues that are, sadly, still quite contemporary. "Unusual and absorbing ... With its convincing medieval setting and characters, this engrossing novel will be an excellent choice to read aloud." ---Booklist, starred review [from back of case]

But MoqI, called Saaski by the man and woman, will have to care, for though she isnt human, she isnt Folk either. Shes half of both, making her not quite one nor the other.
