A natural extension of Total Quality Management, the author's values approach to safety management provides you with predictable, measurable safety improvements. You'll learn how values can be instilled in an organization, why they complement other organizational objectives, and how these concepts can be applied to other parts of a business organization. This book includes a model of an effective values-driven safety program and in-depth coverage of setting priorities.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best safety book I've read; great read for those who lead........1998-12-31

A practical, easy to read and understand book. Author has over 30 years as a safety professional. This is one of the few books that I have read that gets to the real issues underlying safety - behavior and attitudes of people. Author indicates that one must lead a safety improvement effort just like one would lead any other improvement effort ... there are no quick fixes, only a lot of hard, but challenging work. Author presents 10 values that can be adopted (or modified to fit the organization culture), but only IF Management is committed.

                              Book Description

What happens when three leading innovators in their respective fields collaborate? They create an entirely new model of who we are, how we can live and how we can dress. Hurley and Donson, innovators in personality systems, and Parsons, a leading creator of style systems, join forces to give you a new, simple yet profoundly accurate way to identify your Essential Self and from it create your own Essential Style.

Every human being has three intelligences: thinking, feeling and doing. (This is the perennial teaching of cultures east and west now confirmed by modern brain research.) There are three corresponding styles: Elegant, Traditional and Sporty.

There are also three kinds of people: Go-getters (doers and thinkers), Networkers (feelers and doers), and Introspectives (thinkers and feelers).

What does each group need to discover its Essential Self and express its Essential Style? This book answers this question in an enjoyable way that penetrates to the heart of the issue. Easy to read, it demonstrates how our outer expression can support the growth of our inner essence.

Essential Self is who you really are. Essential Style is the attitude, communication, lifestyle and look that flow from the real you. When our outer expression is aligned with our inner essence, we are in union with self, others and the universe.

The key to this process is discovering, exploring and activating your hidden resource! Each of us has built our present lives on two-thirds of our Essential Self. The final third, lying dormant in us, is a hidden resource of vitality and meaning. Restoring this final third to its rightful place in our lives adds hope for overcoming obstacles and experiencing life's deepest pleasures. Because our hidden resource is one of the three centers of intelligence, it expresses itself in one of the three classic styles. Supporting our latent intelligence by expressing and using its corresponding classic style is a fun project that has remarkable effects in our lives.

                              Book Description

Tom Reilly idolized his older brother, Ron. After their parents’ unexpected early deaths, Ron protected his younger brother and taught him the ways of the world. Ron was a charismatic and worldly career soldier, and his kid brother thought of him as a mentor and hero. In July 1970, Ron died halfway around the world in Vietnam. When the Army provided no explanation except that Ron’s death was not due to combat, the nineteen-year-old author set off on an incredible journey to war-torn South Vietnam to find answers, to seek revenge if necessary, and to come to terms with his loss.

Next of Kin begins in small-town Wisconsin, where Tom’s peaceful childhood is shattered by the deaths of his parents. Later, Tom makes it on his own as a runaway, has unforgettable adventures with his brother in a seedy Mexican border town, and is nearly paralyzed with grief when he learns of Ron’s death. On his singular journey to Southeast Asia, Tom evades the police in Bangkok, is smuggled across the enemy-controlled Ho Chi Minh Trail into South Vietnam, fends for himself in Saigon, and survives a mortar attack and a bout with malaria all to find out the truth about his brother’s death. Next of Kin is a touching story of sibling love and family tragedy that will appeal even to those without any connection to the Vietnam War.

4 out of 5 stars Duty, Honor... In-Country and Back.......2004-08-06

"Next of Kin" is a remarkable first-person memoir that reads like a novel. Tom Reilly's story will take your breath away, whether or not you accept all the details. This is not another war story that revisits battles and the soldiers who fought them. Instead, this is a coming-of-age story that is catalyzed (but not defined) by the Vietnam War. Thanks to clean, straighforward writing, Reilly's story is a breeze to read. Critical readers may wish to see additional corroboration or evidence of this harrowing journey. The more casual reader will take it at face value and may appreciate the brotherly bond that made this story possible. May we all be so fortunate to experience such devotion.

5 out of 5 stars Next of Kin: A Brother's Journey to Wartime Vietnam.......2003-11-18

The book is outstanding. I had my daughter pick me up a signed copy because the author lived in my town and I have always been interested in Vietnam as it was from my era.
I had no idea that I would be so enthralled from the very first page. I feel like I know the whole family and recognized all the places that the author speaks of. The pain and courage of both of the brothers reached out from the pages into my heart.
This book was so great I hated to have it end.

What a great story. What a dedication to a brother. we all could learn from this man. This is what family is all about. I highly recomend this read to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A story about Family, Love, Committment and Adventure.......2003-09-15

Just a great story about the caring relationship between two brothers, about love and commitment, set in the era of Vietnam.

An adventure that covers half the world by an 18 year old from the midwest who lost his brother. He had to know what happen and it was clear, it was not war reltated.

This was a great read, a story that was hard to put down at night and when the book was finished, I felt like I lost a
                              friend.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Touching.......2003-08-04

I am a woman in my early 40's and don't usually read books on war or enjoy hearing about war, but I couldn't put this book down. It was written so well that I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. It begins with young Tom Reilly, losing both of his parents and how his brother, Ron, was a constant in his life. Tom, at the age of 19, goes to Vietnam to find out the truth about his brother's death and his "adventure" over there. Tom has written a wonderful, loving dedication to his brother that will touch each and every person that reads this story. It doesn't matter if you are a man or woman, young or old, this is a book you'll want to read. You'll have such a good feeling when you finish.

                                      Book Description

Dean of the Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health in the 1920's and '30's,David Edsall was one of the leaders in a period of great change and progress in medicine. At the beginning of Edsall's career, a doctor's chief weapons were his informed mind and trained senses. By the end of it, the permanent alliance of the sciences and medicine had profoundly altered the doctor's practice and his education. It was a time of struggle, of conflict, and of enduring accomplishment.

Edsall was at the center of this revolutionary effort in three leading schools of medicine: the University of Pennsylvania, Washington University in St. Louis, and Harvard. He began his career in Pennsylvania as recording clerk to the famous Dr. William Pepper, Jr., at the same time making scientific contributions in metabolism through his work in the Pepper Laboratory of Clinical Medicine. By 1907 he had become Professor of Therapeutics and Pharmacology. In 1910 and '11, for one stormy year, he was the school's Professor of Medicine. This was a key year -in 1910 the publication of Abraham Flexner's Medical Education in the United States and Canada had led to the eradication of one quarter of U. S. medical schools and radical reform of many others.

From Pennsylvania Edsall went to St. Louis as Professor of Preventive Medicine, and his part in the reform of that medical school is both controversial and fascinating.

Edsall's appointment in 1912 to a double post at Harvard and the Massachusetts General Hospital brought him to Boston -the field of his major contributions. This remarkable period was the day of such people as Harvard's Walter Cannon, Otto Folin, Harvey Cushing, Alice Hamilton, L. J. Henderson. It saw the founding of the School of Public Health, the major endowment of the Medical School. In his ten years at the hospital and his seventeen years as dean, as in his influence as a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation, Edsall gave direction to many developments in American medicine which bear his mark to this day.
