Book Description
Eating genetically modified food is gambling with every bite.
The biotech industry's claim that genetically modified (GM) foods are safe is shattered in this groundbreaking book. Sixty-five health risks of the foods that Americans eat every day are presented in easy-to-read two-page spreads. The left page is designed for the quick scanning reader; it includes bullets, illustrations, and quotes. The right side offers fully referenced text, describing both research studies and theoretical risks. The second half of Genetic Roulette shows how safety assessments on GM crops are not competent to identify the health problems presented in the first half. It also exposes how industry research is rigged to avoid finding problems.
This book, prepared in with input by more than 30 scientists, is for anyone wanting to understand GM technology, to learn how to protect themselves, or to share their concerns with others. It is presented in the clear, accessible style that made Jeffrey Smith's Seeds of Deception the world's best-selling book on genetically engineered foods. As the world's most complete reference on the health risks of GM foods, Genetic Roulette is also ideal for schools and libraries.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference on GM foods.......2007-09-18
Genetic Roulette is well organized, well researched and well documented. It's layout makes it easy to pick out the main points of a topic or get all the details. It makes a handy reference and a good resource for plowing through all the specifics.
Jeffrey Smith is a stickler for accuracy. When I contacted him to use some excerpts from his books in my new editon of FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper's Guide..., it was very clear to me that he wanted to make sure that I was absolutely accurate with my facts. He demonstrated to me, his commitment to complete and total accuracy and publishing only factual information.
If you want to know the truth about genetically engineered food, I highly recommend this book.
GENETIC ROULETTE is a unique reference not to be missed........2007-08-07
GENETIC ROULETTE: THE DOCUMENTED HEALTH RISKS OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS is a recommended pick for college-level health libraries: it covers everything from genetic transfer issues and risks for children and newborns to safety-related assumptions that have been proven wrong, signs of toxic reactions, and more. Packed with charts, FDA review information, details on regulatory issues and industry studies, and overall health concerns, GENETIC ROULETTE is a unique reference not to be missed.
Food Advice from Flying cultist? Be my guest.......2007-07-27
Jeff Smith purports to present "science" demonstrating the dangers of genetically engineered foods. Rather than deconstruct the hilariously paranoid, non-scientific boogeymen that Smith and others see in GM foods, I think readers should know just exactly who author Jeff Smith is. Then they can decide if this self-published book is worth reading. (yes, Smith published this book himself, as no respected publisher would take it)
Jeff Smith is an ardent and long-time follower of the Maharishi cult that has taken over a small town in Iowa. Over the past decade, the Maharishi cult has meddled in many things (their town only allows the sale/serving of "organic foods."), including attempts to get their members elected into political office.
Jeff Smith was an aide to a Maharishi cult candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Illinois in 1996. During the campaign, Smith and others would demonstrate "yogic flying" on the campaign trail and explain how SCIENCE shows yogic flying reduces crime, etc.
According to the University of Illinois' Daily Illini student newspaper (10/28/1996):
"Jeffrey Smith, a Davis aide and one of the three flyers, explained the idea and effects of yogic flying, which relies on practicing transcendental meditation, to the small crowd.
"Smith presented charts with evidence of a correlation between the presence of yogic flyers and an increase in the quality of life and a decrease in crime. Smith cited limited yogic flying programs in Washington D.C. and near the Middle East that resulted in less crime and more harmony.
"'(This is why) Jim Davis as the Senate candidate for the Natural Law Party believes that any city that has a group of say 7,000 yogic flyers practicing together will not only generate great coherence and cleansing effect for the nation and the entire world, but will enjoy a dramatic reduction in crime rate within the city,' Smith said."
So, please -- if you're into "yogic flying" and believe that science proves "yogic flying" reduces crime, then this book (and author) will be credible. If you have a more "grounded" view of science and food safety, steer clear of this paranoid rant.
P.S. Smith also teaches Swing Dancing if that's builds up his credibility any.
The last word on GM risks.......2007-06-09
What's your response when someone comes out with a statement they've picked up from somewhere to the effect that "There's no evidence that GM food is harmful"?
If you have time and energy, perhaps you manage to scrabble together bits and pieces from memory, the web, or an article. But considering the number of calls that the business of living places on us, perhaps you just shrug your shoulders and muse that the world is going to hell in a handbasket of Bush, Blair, and Monsanto's making and there's nothing you can do about it.
Well, now there is. Just point them in the direction of the latest book from Jeffrey Smith, Genetic Roulette.
A must-read for policy-makers, educators, and journalists, it's also invaluable for anyone who wants to sharpen their weaponry in the battle against the imposition of GM foods. And judging by emails I've received from students asking about the risks of GM food, every educational institution and public library needs a copy.
Those who enjoyed Smith's previous book, Seeds of Deception, should be warned that this isn't the same sort of read. Seeds laid out the fraud of GM through its stories: the honest scientists who were gagged, threatened, and persecuted; the consumers who got sick and died from eating a supplement produced with GM bacteria, only to have their suffering covered up by a government protecting industry interests. Genetic Roulette is not a book of stories, but an easy-to-use reference book of scientific and other documented findings on the risks of GM foods.
Contrary to what the industry would have us believe, a considerable number of findings show GM causes harm, and they are clearly presented in this book. Given the worrying lack of substantial published research, Smith also draws upon unpublished studies, case studies, medical reports, media reports, and eyewitness accounts. Unlike the notorious pronouncements of biotech industry supporters, statements of opinion are never misrepresented as scientific fact. The author has gone to great lengths to maintain accuracy, having each section of the book checked by at least three scientists.
Conspicuous by their absence are follow-up studies to those that show harm from GM foods. The book details tactics that industry uses to bury inconvenient research, including ignoring it, attempting to discredit the research or its authors, and funding competing studies so poorly designed that no meaningful findings can be extracted. If all else fails, industry-aligned researchers discount deaths of experimental animals or claim that statistically significant results have, magically, no significance at all.
The layout of the book is an exemplar of clarity and should serve as the model for any reference book. It is designed to make the material accessible to three levels of reader: scanners, casual readers, and those who want detail. Each double-page spread is devoted to a problem with GM foods, with the left-hand page having the topic heading, a quote by an expert, and a few summarizing bullet points; the right-hand page gives technical detail. You don't need a science background to understand it. While the book is not bedtime reading, terms are defined and the boggle factor is kept low. The table of contents enables the reader to scan the problems with GM food and quickly to access the evidence on each.
Smith has to be the best science communicator alive today, and this book stands as the final word on GM health risks. It's the definitive answer to those who don't know, those who don't want to know, and those who know but don't want anyone else to know.

Book Description
The cause of gravitation is explained by analysis of Coulomb's Law: like charges repel, unlike charges attract, and the strength of the attraction or repulsion is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. The nuclear force and gravitation are simply manifestations of the electrostatic force. Explained is the reason no atomic nucleus has more than 92 protons, and no nucleus (in spite of the alleged nuclear force) has 2 protons without a neutron to hold them together. The expanding universe is explained without a "big bang." Recent observations indicating the presence of antigravity (Science 279:651,Jan 1998; Business Week p.113, Mar 16, 1998) was anticipated and is strong evidence of the truth of the presented theory.
Customer Reviews:
ELECTROGRAVITY MADE EASY!.......2001-01-01
I first read this book back in the early 80's as I was beginning to research electrogravity(gravity & electricity united). This book was a layman's answer to some puzzling questions! Unfortunately I lost the book in 1982 and I am ordering a new one to add to my collection of classics! If you ever heard about Electro-Gravity, order this book!
Interesting but doubtful.......2000-04-02
This book begins promising. It highlights flaws inherent in science's current understanding of gravity, and outlines the method that the book will disprove these shakey beliefs. However it barely does this, and instead makes for a slow and rather bizarre read

Very educational.......2007-08-25
This book is very educational to use in a classroom or an education focused day camp and is not an easy read as a story book at bedtime.
Not your ordinary desert book.......2004-05-12
We have been reading many different desert books for a unit study. It seemed that we kept running across the same old information in every book. Then we read this one! It tells you things that you just don't find in other books. This turned out to be our favorite book. The pictures are wonderful and it is easily understandable by young children, thought adults will learn a thing or two as well! Highly recommended.
This book was full of wonderful pictures and information.......2003-03-30
I have used this book every year as a third grade teacher. It is wonderful as a read aloud for science to illustrate how animals and plants adapt to their environment and rely on other plants and animals for survival. This is one of the best books I have ever read to my class because it is not dull science jargon but presented as the story of the life of the cactus. Don't miss this one for teaching and learning about life science in the desert.
Our third grade class loved your book........1999-11-03
Our third grade loved your book. It gave us a lot of information about the desert. The illustrations were excellent. We especilly liked the use of author techniques such as diagrams, onomatopeias, catchy title and colorful illustrations. We would love to contact Barbara Bash.

Excellent, interesting explanations of cacti survival.......1997-04-30
Amazing facts about the little-known but heavily-filmed Saguaro Cactus make this book a powerhouse for young children. Parents enjoy reading to their children because they too learn as they read along. Storad writes in a nice, clear fashion and explains both the "insides" and the outsides of the plant. An excellent book for school libraries.

A saguaro cactus.......2000-03-29
This book contains so much more than the title would suggest. It tells not only of the cactus itself but also of the desert life that surrounds it and uses it. There are photographs and sketches of the desert animals as well as "side bars" with interesting information about desert life. Also included are suggested activities for using the new knowledge about desert life.

Book Description
1861. Volume 3 of 5. Lord Macaulay wrote this history of England from the accession of King James the Second down to a time which was within the memory of men still living. He recounts the errors which, in a few months, alienated a loyal gentry and priesthood from the House of Stuart. He traces the course of that revolution which terminated the long struggle between our sovereigns and their parliaments, and bound up together the rights of the people and the title of the reigning dynasty. Lord Macaulay relates how the new settlement was, during many troubled years, successfully defended against foreign and domestic enemies; how, under that settlement, the authority of law and the security of property were found to be compatible with a liberty of discussion and of individual action never before known.

Han Nolan spins a tale of religious fervor and adolescent searching in When We Were Saints, a compelling novel that allows readers to draw their own conclusions. The story centers on Archie Caswell, a 14-year-old southern boy whose best friend has recently moved away and whose grandfather has just died. Archie is awash in guilt over the circumstances of his granddaddy's passing, but he's equally troubled by the old man's deathbed prophecy.
Enter Clare Simmons, a mysterious girl who fully believes she and Archie are modern-day saints. Abandoned by his former confidant and desperate for answers, Archie gets swept up in Clare's appealing certainty--eventually following her all the way to New York City on a risky pilgrimage to see a crying statue of the Virgin Mary.
Nolan writes convincingly about personal struggles with faith--Archie is at times a blissful believer, at others plagued with doubt. In either state, Nolan helps us understand exactly why the young man feels the way he does. In the end, we join Archie in wondering if Clare is mentally ill, or if she does in fact have a direct line to a higher power. A captivating read, especially for teens trying to find their own way in the domain of religion and spirituality. (Ages 13 and older) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Archibald Caswell could never please his domineering granddaddy Silas. Now with Granddaddy gone, Archie finds himself lost, confused, and wondering what his grandfather could have possibly meant by his dying words: "Young man, you are a saint!"
Clare Simpson knows exactly what Silas meant. She convinces Archie to dedicate his life to God, give up his possessions, steal his granddaddy's truck, and head north to the Cloisters in New York, where she and Archie secretly live after museum hours. For Clare the journey is a return to the only place where she has felt happy and loved. For Archie, the pilgrimage leads him to a closer relationship with God--and a burning desire for home.
Includes a reader's guide and an interview with the author.
Customer Reviews:
Reality is Colored with Shades of Gray.......2007-10-12
For readers with religious backgrounds, this title suggests a nostalgic novel, one that perhaps laments the present immoral lifestyle for the more virtuous ways of the past--a feeling with which the religious reader can relate. But upon opening When We Were Saints, such a reader will find a story of the other extreme. Not a reflection on a past life of figurative sainthood, it is the tale of two teenagers' atypical present journey toward a literal sainthood.
A home-schooled fourteen-year-old living on a southern farm with his aged grandparents and saddened that his only friend is moving to Washington, D.C., Archibald Lee Caswell has enough to worry about.
But when Granddaddy Silas, the once-esteemed town prophet turned cursing drunkard, after falling to the ground upon having discovered Archie and his friend brewing alcohol in the basement, lies silent on his deathbed, Archie adds another concern to the list. In a moment of revelation--or was it hallucination?--Grandaddy Silas pokes his finger into Archie's stomach and speaks his final prophecy--or was it a curse?--"Young man, you are a saint!"
As Archie considers the meaning of his grandfather's final words, he struggles to define sainthood and discover the saint in himself, even as the reader questions the book's portrayal of religiosity and struggles to relate to Archie's story.
Confused, lost, wandering, Archie meets Clare Simpson, a mysterious, glowing girl who makes sense of his religious experience on the mountain, introduces him to a Gandhi-like lifestyle that guarantees closeness to God, insists on calling him Francis, and seems to have everything under control. Smitten with her beauty and believing that she is a saint, Archie follows Clare as a admiring and striving disciple.
The journey to sainthood culminates in a pilgrimage to the Cloisters in New York, where Clare reveals her plans of a life dedicated to God. Thinking theirs was a journey of spiritual revelation, Archie instead becomes increasingly aware of the problems with this extreme religiosity, this distorting of the Christian calling to be in the world, but not of the world.
Worried about his hospitalized grandmother who he has abandoned and about the rail-thin Clare's refusal to eat, Archie allows the reader to share in the story at last by gradually narrowing the gap between idealism and reality, as the reader's criticisms are actualized and authenticated by Archie's thoughts.
Though Nolan provides some clear examples of what a religious life is not, the book does not make clear what a religious life should be. Clare's convictions are only checked by Archie's uncertainties and her mother's atheistic worldview, not by any established, exemplary "saint." Again, what readers expect to find in a religious novel is abandoned: an obvious juxtaposition of saint and sinner, clear lines between not enough and too much, a moral and sense of certainty.
But perhaps uncertainty is just the point. The realism the reader rejoices to finally find in Archie demands an unsettling ending; a more certain conclusion or an easy solution would be untrue. Because religious belief includes miracles and mysteries, demands faith in things not seen and heard, and transcends reality, its adherents face some uncertainties.
Though the book may not appeal to all audiences, those who become its captivated readers will find a unique and powerful story and will not close the book without reexamining themselves, their religiosity, and the balance between reality and faith.
A very pleasant surprise.......2006-01-10
This novel was recommended to me by a friend and that rarely promises a good read. However, this novel was a surprise. Not so much when I initially read it, although I did find the characters curious and compelling. But long after I finished the novel I still find myself thinking about the issues it raises about modern understanding of spirituality and what it means to believe. I would say more but am afraid I would give away too much. I can only say that I would gladly share this novel with any young person I know for the sake of seeing what, if anything, the carry away from their reading.
Amazed.......2004-04-26
I just finished reading this book -- in two days. As soon as I finished I wanted to go back and read it all over again! I feel like I have actually met both Clare and Archie, the main characters, they come to life. This book is both thought provoking and a "good read." Highly recommended.
Not Bad, But Not Great.......2004-03-14
Despite its thought-provoking and generally positive message, this book is too lengthy and slow-paced to be compelling. Set in rural Appalachia, this tale weaves together themes of spirituality, religion, mental illness, and individual growth. Archie?s grandfather, known by some as a prophet but by most as the town drunk, uses his dying breath to call Archie a saint. Soon after, Archie?s grandmother falls ill, his relationship with his best friend ends, and he meets a strange and beautiful young woman named Clare. In a state of confusion about his grandfather?s dying words and his own life?s meaning, Archie believes Clare when she tells him that they are both saints and must change their lives through constant prayer, starvation, and eventually, a pilgrimage the Cloisters Museum in New York. While the description of the museum is beautifully rendered, the actions of the teens are much less plausible, causing readers to feel unsympathetic toward Archie and his foolish mistakes. Unless you have a need for a spiritual journey that lacks suspense and believable events, pass on this title.
Excellent.......2004-02-26
This book was even better than I expected. I like this author and I thought the basic story line sounded interesting so I bought it. It was much a much deeper book than I anticipated and I read it from beginning to end in one sitting. I didn't want to put it down. The searching and resolution in this story is more than most people figure out in their whole lives. I think many people would benefit from reading this book, not just yound adults.

Very Good Information.......2000-08-01
This book was filled with all kinds of information and suggestions to keep the "Honeymoon" in your marriage. The honeymoon never has to be over. There was a lot of useful information for the first year of marriage. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Valuable advice for LDS couples. More examples, though!.......2000-06-27
My fiancee and I, in hopes of avoiding the pitfalls of many newlywed couples, read this book with the hope of better preparing ourselves for our upcoming life together. Do we feel better prepared after doing so? Yes. The Bytheway's advice is based on well-accepted principles which lead to a happy marriage (communication, understanding, patience, overlooking little annoyances, etc.). Perhaps more importantly for their audience, they present these principles in an LDS context, complete with quotes from church leaders.
But, like any good church talk, we wanted more personal examples, more specifics! The title ("What We Wish We'd Known When We Were Newlyweds") implies that the Bytheways are about to tell us about the challenges they had early on in their marriage, and how we can avoid them. To be fair, there were examples, but we were craving more! They write about a few "crisis" talks they had, but what were these about, and how did they solve the problems? The reader is left hanging.
We can understand their hesitancy in sharing specific info. about their personal lives, especially since their friends and family will probably read their book. But isn't that a risk one has to take when writing such a book? The chapter on intimacy was representative--they essentially refer the reader to other sources for details. We (with parents who were afraid to tell us ANYTHING about intimacy, esp. DETAILS) are looking for an LDS source for such information. It's hard to come by.
Overall, we loved the Bytheway's attitude toward marriage--that it can be great! That's what we want. Like them, so many people have told us how hard marriage will be. While realistic, we are getting tired of hearing that lamentation, and choose to MAKE things work. Thanks, John and Kimberly Bytheway, for your help in our endeavor.
