Book Description
This text helps students hit the road with a practical set of tools, and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions. The goal is to introduce a new Principles of Accounting text that better reflects a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material.
The authors have taken a new "macro- to micro-" approach to the Principles of Accounting course by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle (although the Accounting Cycle is thoroughly covered in Chapters 3 and 4). The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. They motivate students by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their future career.

MANAGING BY MEASURING How to Improve Your Organization's Performance Through Effective Benchmarking As information systems managers search for ways to improve their operations, they're discovering that traditional "shot-gun" approaches to benchmarking are too broad and too vague. Now, Managing by Measuring breaks out of the generalist mold to supply targeted information on how to identify best practices specifically in information systems organizations. The book includes: ** an overview of benchmarking and how it can help the information systems specialist ** step-by-step guidelines on conducting a benchmarking study, including how to perform research, analyze raw data, and isolate best practices ** tips for managing the process, including how to develop a mission statement, select a team, and prioritize activities ** a practical benchmarking demonstration, including detailed instructions and ready-to-go forms. In addition, the book supplies real-life case studies of information systems organizations that have successfully used benchmarking techniques, and key results of an original study conducted by The Benchmarking Network. MARK T. CZARNECKI (Houston, TX) is president of The Benchmarking Network, Inc. and has conducted major industry studies in the areas of accounting, finance, health care, purchasing, warehousing, and more.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting but no real insight.......2004-07-23
According to the authors, ?High school is never over. The workplace ? is just an adult version of high school.? To support that proposition, the authors present a lengthy list of behaviors and personalities that supposedly are observable in high schools and are then transferred into workplaces. Their claim that these reflect ?core? traits of an individual is somewhat undermined by a call for readers to ?reinvent? themselves by altering these core approaches. Can one simply change a core trait?
There are desirable and undesirable ?archetypes.? On the plus side are the ?A Student, Class Clown, Rebel, Jock, Teacher?s Pet, Geek, Party Animal, Loner, Cheerleader, Straight Arrow, Go-getter, Class President, Thespian, Activist, and Underachiever.? On the negative side of the ledger are the ?Snob, Complainer, Prima Donna, Gossip, Brown-noser, Know-it-all, Bully, Cheater, and Player.?
It may strike some readers that this breakdown of types, especially for high school, is overly complicated with too narrow of distinctions. Typically, in high schools there are smart kids, jocks, cheerleaders, and regular kids. The negativities that the authors discuss are not appreciably evidenced. However, high school cliques can be far more harshly enforced than among co-workers. An area that the authors do not go near is the impact of family wealth in differentiating high school kids. The pecking order in high school largely conforms to social standing in the greater community. The more well-to-do kids are generally more socially adept and have more resources and the support to join various teams and clubs and perform better in the classroom. Of course, some overcome their economic disadvantages. In so far as distinctions in high school do reflect economics, it would be hard to make a case that various roles and behaviors necessarily reflect a person?s core.
It would have been interesting for the authors to comment on the usefulness of their analysis of personality and behavior compared to such evaluative tools as the Briggs Myers Personality Indicator based on the four dimensions of extraversion (E) vs. introversion (I), sensing (S) vs. intuition (N), thinking (T) vs. feeling (F), and judging (J) vs. perceiving (P). Does it mean more to say that someone is an ?A student? as opposed to being an ?ISTJ? type? What would an employer want to know?
Frankly most of the authors? archetypes pertain to adults and to workplaces rather than to teenagers. Adults are far richer in their diversity. The list for adults could be larger. The Habitual Parent and the Back-stabber come to mind. The authors also contend that the structure of businesses and high schools is such that students and employees find them selves in a similar position. But the workplace environment is far more complicated. Navigating mine fields is often required to get ahead; school in its core function does not. Grades more or less comport with performance, but promotions and pay reflect far more than performance. Teachers do not fire students on a whim; bosses can and do. There really is no equivalent in high school to the one-sided distribution of power in workplaces and the consequences for employees.
It may well be that there is a correlation between the role or behavior of an individual in high school and his or her position later in a workplace. The authors do not specifically say that. They only contend that certain archetypes are found in both locations. The authors do not make a good case for the inevitability of core traits. They largely miss social, economic, and political factors that have a lot to do with where people wind up, despite any core personality characteristics. It would not be surprising to learn that a large percentage of the workforce is misplaced if core orientation is the standard. School to work transition in the US has always been known to be haphazard, unlike efforts made in Europe.
Light reading.......2004-02-27
The information was useful and I will keep the book for refrerence. It did remind me of reading books on astrological signs. Finally, I did not laugh out loud once while reading this book as previous reviewers all seem to do.
Most Likely to Succeed at Work: How Work Is Just Like High S.......2003-09-08
This book is refreshingly humorous and is a must-read for anyone who has to work with people in the workplace - that would include most of us. Whether you are in upper management or just starting out, you must know how to navigate your way through the politics of the workplace. This book gives you both an interesting perspective and sound advice on how to do so successfully.
The book simply breaks your colleagues into the same personalities that existed in your high school classroom - the more things change the more they stay the same. Once you take a step back and think about the motivations associated with workplace behavior, you'll look at it differently and, perhaps even change a few of your responses to the behavior. At a minimum the book arouses a greater sense of awareness about your colleagues. While we are all individuals, we do tend to fall into a finite number of personality categories - even though we may adapt some of the qualities of the others to our own from time to time.
I found myself laughing out loud and shaking my head affirmatively as I read through each archetype. This book puts a fresh spin on some of the oldest struggles faced by every worker, regardless of where they work. It is a quick read and one that you can read in a series of 10 minute snippets or the entire book on your next flight.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Learning To Be A More Successful You.......2003-07-03
This book about maximizing your success in the business world offers common sense advice about how to achieve your goals. The authors' organization combined with clever humor makes you look forward to the next chapter. When you read the examples that the authors use to emphasize that chapter's purpose, you smile, nod, and think this is way to successfully approach this person or problem. At the completion of the book, you can visualize the person you can become and you have the tools to be that person.
Insights you can use.......2003-07-01
This is a smart, practical guide to understanding people at work (and dealing with them more effectively) -- using insights from the social experiences we all had in high school. It's a great premise, and the authors really deliver. They are funny, sharp, and wise. Stop complaining about people at work and get this book to learn how to improve things once and for all!
Book Description
While on his meteoric rise in the Union army, Philip H. Sheridan earned the enmity of many Virginians for laying waste to the Shenandoah Valley. His date and place of birth is uncertain, but he himself claimed to have been born in New York in 1831. Although he was destined to come out of the Civil War with the third greatest reputation among the victors, his military career did not begin auspiciously. It took him five years to graduate from West Point (1853) because of an altercation with fellow cadet and future Union General, William R. Terrill.
After serving in a staff position during the early part of the war he was recommended for the command of a cavalry regiment by Gordon Granger. Within days of taking command he was in charge of the brigade with which he earned his first star at Booneville in northern Mississippi. He fought well at Perryville and Murfreesboro and was given a second star in the volunteers.
When Grant went to the East, he placed Sheridan in command of the Army of the Potomac's mounted arm. Following Early's threat to Washington, Grant tapped Sheridan to command a new military division, comprised of three departments, and charged him with clearing out the Shenandoah Valley. For this campaign he was named brigadier and major general in the regular army and received the Thanks of Congress.
The next March he destroyed Early's remaining forces at Waynesboro and then went on a raid, threatening Lynchburg. Rejoining Grant, he smashed through the Confederate lines at Five Forks, necessitating the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. It was his cavalry command, backed by infantry, which finally blocked Lee's escape at Appomattox.
This is a digital reprint of the two Volume C.L. Webster Shoulder Board editions As Published in 1888. This is Volume 1 (ISBN 1582181853) of 2 (ISBN 1582181861).
Customer Reviews:
The life of a great Union general, in his own words.......2003-11-15
The two-volume memoirs of General Philip Sheridan have been condensed in this edition to one paperback volume, thus making more accessible. Let me state up front that I'm giving this product four stars because of the edition. There is an introduction by Jeffry Wert, and that appears to be the extent of the work done in preparation for this volume's release. There are numerous spelling and mechanical errors (I'm not sure if these were Sheridan's or just the result of careless editing), and they are frequent enough to get really annoying really fast. ''m not talking about pre-standardized type spelling errors, or awkward, run-on nineteenth century sentences. No, these are just careless mistakes.
That having been said, this is a great volume of memoirs from one of the Civil War's most accomplished generals. I do not say great general, because whether or not he was great is still a topic of much controversy. There is no denying that Sheridan got things done, and that he won several important victories, but there is room for debate in the matter in which he accomplished things, and his treatment of subordinates in doing so.
Predictably, Sheridan paints a pretty rosy picture of himself in his memoirs. Still, to be fair to the man, he DID do an awful lot for the Union cause, and I don't think that his vainglory can be entirely chalked up to shameless self promotion. The fact is that he was a very key factor in several victories, and to take his part away from the narrative would be to distort the entire picture of what happened. "Little Phil" was almost always present and often in the fray during his decisive engagements. On the other hand, I noticed him dressing-down his role in some conflicts, whereas contemporary accounts praise his part to no end.
The great thing about memoirs is that we hear things straight from the mouths of those who took part in them, and are able to judge for ourselves to what extent their testimony is reliable. For me, at least, I will always feel that Sheridan's memoirs hold a certain bias, but I will nevertheless continue to hold this volume of personal narrative as valuable. (Note: this volume covers only to the point of Sheridan returning from Europe. There's nothing on the little Bighorn or later military activities here).
If You Can't Afford the Original 1888 2 Volume Set..........2000-05-07
These are his own words set in one paperback novel. Gives you a perspective on the war from a leadership position. However, it doesn't have the maps and pictures that the original volumes sported.
Great personal recollections of a man who lead the troops fearlessly in the war.

Customer Reviews:
Ambivalent.......2005-07-28
As one involved in the porphyria community, I was eager to read this book. There isn't a lot of information out there for us, after all!
Evans writes in a matter-of-fact, direct fashion. The prose isn't scintillating, but the story moves along at a brisk pace. I could easily identify with many of the author's experiences: the endless testing; the blinding pain; the dismissive doctors; the despair of knowing *something* is wrong, but not being able to pinpoint the cause.
I did question a lot of the material, however. For one thing, there have been porphyria foundations in both the USA and Canada since the 1980s. There have also been more aggressive treatment options and banned drug lists since the 1970s. Also, a lot of Evans' descriptions of her attacks were odd--for instance, the way her photosensitvity manifested itself. Either Evans had completely incompetent doctors, or something's missing here.
I also wondered why Evans kept playing up the whole "Vampire Disease" and "curse" terminology. It's certainly sensational, but that's about it. It would have been better if she had explained the illness a little more thoroughly. The reader never really gets a clear picture of the actual scientific facts of porphyria.
On a technical note, who edited this book? The grammar and punctuation typos and misused words made me grit my teeth. How did the proofreader at this press overlook such errors as "hoards of people" (it should be "hordes") and "dirth" (a misspelling of "dearth")? Call me a nitpicker, but these things do detract from the overall quality of the book.
I would recommend this book to other porphyria patients, but I am not sure I would extend the same endorsement to the general public. I do not feel this book really provides a full and accurate depiction of a typical case.

This book was very interesting. The author tells her own story in her own way. Amazing.
Want to know more about Sharon?.......1999-05-27
I have recieved many e-mails from readers of the book, but I have not wrote any of you because this is not my book. I am glad that you liked me, but that is because of the Author not me.You said you wanted to hear more about me, Well I am very busy with remodeling the inside of my house. It is the first time I have ever been able to remodel, because I have always been a military wife and I was always on the move. Now I can afford to do what I have always wanted to do (remodel)My husband and children say I am very good at it.When I am not working on the house I am traveling. I just got back from N.C.With my friend and I had a ball. I went and saw the bilmore house it has 260 rooms. No I didn't get to see all of them. Well that is a little bit about me. I hope you go on reading the book and keep learning about new disease's.
