There are two primary reasons why police auditing merits the attention of both practitioners and academicians. First, police auditing meets the need of police administrators to know about the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of their operational programs. Second, police auditing provides an important tool for the public and its elected representatives to fulfill their oversight responsibilities. This book provides a comprehensive view of police auditing by examining the theories, standards, procedures, practices, and evaluations of police audit. The purpose of this coverage is to enable the reader to obtain a general understanding of different aspects and types of police audits and learn to apply the principles of police auditing to a particular police department. This very readable book is not designed like an accounting text but instead has combined descriptions of police auditing with discussions of planned change, and integrated standards and procedures of police auditing with principles of social science research to explicate a viable approach to changing the police. The book is aimed at three types of readers. First, it is intended to provide police executives and managers with a timely and necessary understanding of police auditing. Second, it serves as a valuable source of information for researchers and academicians who evaluate police programs. Third, students in criminal justice programs will find the book helpful in courses that address police budget review, police accountability, performance evaluations, as well as general police organizational diagnoses.

This book explains, from a public law perspective, the constitutional purpose and significance of audit, a topic which has been largely neglected, and casts light on important aspects of accountability in the British system of government. The book suggests that audit, as an accountability mechanism, has been underplayed to date and that greater significance should be attributed to its role in delivering both democratic accountability and, within government, managerial accountability. The focus of the book is central government audit in Britain, but the constitutional role of audit at a local level and at a European Union level is also considered. The book begins by explaining, in a non -technical way, the basic concepts of accounting and audit, and sets audit in its historical context. The different types of audit and the institutional framework within which audit is conducted are then analysed. Any shortcomings in each area are identified and suggestions for change are explored. The constitutional significance of the changes to the role of audit that are currently taking place are analysed, as are the effects of developments, such as the creation of agencies, contracting-out, and more recently, resource accounting and budgeting and devolution, on the constitutional role of audit. The fundamental principles, both institutional and substantive, of public sector audit are identified and new tasks that audit could fulfil at central government level are proposed.

This book was written by a professor at the University of Nevada and is aimed towards the academically inclined. After weighing the various policy considerations of range management, it fails to reach a convincing conclusion. Government regulation is not the evil policy envisioned by the author, and is preferable than letting be set ad hoc by self-interested red neck cowboys.

A fascinating and comprehensive look at ranching . . ........1999-09-16

I came across this book while doing research about ranching in the American West -- this book is by far the most interesting, comprehensive and well-written book about the cattle industry that I've found.

A Return to Basics.......2001-12-25

Watson's book is needed for much of what ails business today. It returns to the basic premise that good character is important to long-term success in business, which was lost during the shift to behaviorism in the 40's through the 70's.

"Managing With Integrity, Insights from America's CEOs" is not fluff reading. It is well written and interesting, but it does not simplify to seven easy steps. Watson has researched it well and backed up each principle with good, basic scholarship. Moreover, the material applies to everyone: employee, manager, or business owner. It does not fall into the potential trap of being written for just CEOs and sold to the popular market for dreamers.

As an engineer and entrepreneur, I have been in all aspects of business. This book shows what works. You should enjoy reading this book, but you will not necessarily finish it in two or three sittings.
