Book Description
An increasing awareness of the significance of the management of people to competitiveness, alongside new practices and new paradigms such as 'human resource management', demands a critical appraisal of both the theory and practice of personnel management.
This new and thoroughly up-dated edition of the best-selling Personnel Management provides a challenging analysis of recent thinking and developments. Original contributions from leading experts offer a provocative, path breaking treatment of personnel management in the "lean organization" and the "extended organization" as well as the main issues in each of the key areas of planning and resourcing, performance management, training and development, involvement and participation and management-trade union "partnership" agreements.
Overall, it offers the fullest analysis to date of what is happening in personnel management and the most comprehensive framework within which to understand both present and likely future trends, including the challenges of Europeanization following the UK's signature of the "social chapter" of the EU Maastricht Treaty and the launch of the critical stage of Economic and Monetary Union. This book's distinctive approach, in simultaneously bringing together and advancing knowledge and understanding of how people are managed in work organisations makes it a vital source for policy makers, teachers and researchers in the field, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate management students and practitioners taking IPD qualifications.

secrets of the soil.......2007-01-10
great information. very interesting. i learned a lot and can use a lot of the info myself. they sure have some crazy methods but they seem to do a wonderful job.
A serious book with essential information.......2006-12-01
I must have read this book several times over. It contains an amazing overview of the unknown world under our feet!
Even though some information might seem far out there, since publication of this book many claims have been scientifically proven to be very essential to a new century in agriculture. In particular the Chapter on Sonic Bloom describes a technique that is now used all over the world.
The authors of this book where one of the first to compile and publish information on this essential subject! If the soil is neglected, the plants are, too!
Modern farming methods are in dire need to be revised for the good of long term results. This book is a must read for everyone that has a green thumb and yearning to know more about plants!
Do you believe in "etheric formative forces" ?.......2006-07-06
This is total BS. Absolutely nothing grounded in reality. These people or completely mad. Unless you believe in magic and hocus pocus, stay away. Scary!!!
If you care........2005-05-03
This is a must read for those interested in our globe and or agriculture. If you can get past your own intellectuality, as I see in some of the other reviews, And see the book for what it is. It is well read, informative, gives solutions of variations to what can be done to better our soil,food and earth.Despite some very depressing information about how we are handling our world,food,soil,animals and ultimately our the human mental and physical health, it gives hope, it gives the 'want' to start a change in how we treat our world. I could not put the book down, and it is now a wandering book being well recieved by friends and friends of friends.I highly recommend this book, in fact,- I say we would be a lot better off if everyone would read it.
Is there nobody with a critical mind?.......2005-02-27
Interesting to compare the reviews of this book with the widely avaialble reviews that debunk the authors' previous 'secret life of plants'. The SoS book is better put together, but again seems to be part of the genre of uncritical hanging together of a whole lot of suggestive bits and pieces with little critical weighing of the evidence. Frankly if you believe some of this stuff (round towers and all that cow dung buried in horns) then you are indeed 'away with the fairies', although some of the material in the book is respectable enough (e.g. the stuff on remineralisation of soils). What I'd like to see is a proper review by someone who understands soil science, yet has an open mind to there being 'more to the universe than we know'. The problem is that to evaluate knowledge claims you have to have some kind of standard and method - otherwise it is just 'say what you like' time, and this is what gives the green and radical movements a bad name.
The two stars are because it is thought provoking, but ultimately it remains unconvincing.

A very nice book on the outer solar system........2006-02-28
This is a really nice, and cheap, history of the outer solar system. Until recently Saturn was the last known planet. This all changed with the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781. Since then we have struggled to reveal information about the outer planets. The book covers both the personal lives of the main characters involved in the discoveries as well as the science involved without going into too much technical detail. At the same time it does not tend to oversimplify the significance of the science by using flowery language.
As it was written around 1990 the book is slightly out of date, missing some of the latest discoveries. However, this is forgivable given the books price. I give the book 4 stars because it is not outstanding. It is however very readable and interesting. It would be worth reading for anyone who has a general interest astronomy/space etc.
An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.......2005-09-04
Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.

Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.
Pleasantly informal and substantial.......2000-07-02
This excellent book on the outer solar system is written for laypeople who want more than a short introduction to the subject. The writing style is informal but very informative.
The book was published in 1988, as Voyager 2 neared Neptune. A 1990 paperback edition describes the actual flyby.
There are chapters on Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, their discoveries, the related discovery of the first asteroids, the Voyagers' Grand Tour, the search for a tenth planet, and more.
The author also remembers the human touch. There is ample discussion of planet discoverers William Herschel, John Adams, Urban Le Verrier, and Clyde Tombaugh. We also learn about the memorable people they worked with, and sometimes against (!)
The author likes sidebars, which are quite interesting and keep the main text from bogging down. There you will find:
* A short biography of Caroline Herschel (William's sister), the first woman professional astronomer;
* Clyde Tombaugh on some of his experiences;
* Gary Flando on his discovery of the Grand Tour;
* James Christy on his discovery of Pluto's moon Charon;
* Galileo's unsuspecting observation of Neptune in 1613;
* The planned Galileo and Cassini missions;
* Much more.
One sidebar strongly supports Pluto's planetary status, but it concedes that if Pluto turns out to be a typical member of a hypothetical asteroid belt beyond Neptune, it might make sense to redesignate Pluto. Four years later, the Kuiper Belt was discovered...
Hopefully Littmann will revise the book again to include the Kuiper Belt, the Hubble Telescope, the latest speculation on Planet X, and more.
Highly recommended.
*****
January 28, 2006: I have just acquired the 1990 paperback edition.
A new 30-page chapter thoroughly covers Voyager 2's 1989 Neptune flyby. The rest of the book is almost unchanged, so the reader can compare speculation and reality.
The book suggests that a proposed 2000-2014 Pluto mission be named Tombaugh. New Horizons is now on the way to a 2015 flyby. It doesn't carry Clyde Tombaugh's name, but it does carry some of his ashes.
Much has happened since Littman's 1990 revision, and indeed since my initial 2000 review. Galileo was crashed into Jupiter after completing its mission. Cassini is at Saturn. Two new moons of Pluto were discovered. Pluto is no longer the largest known object beyond Neptune. There is no consensus whether eight, nine, or ten objects deserve the term planet. If Littman revises the book again, he has a lot of new material to discuss.
Still highly recommended.

Book Description
In 1937, Ronald H. Coase published "The Nature of the Firm," a classic paper that raised fundamental questions about the concept of the firm in economic theory. Coase proposed that the comparative costs of organizing transactions through markets rather than within firms are the primary determinants of the size and scope of firms. Coase won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Economics for this work. This volume derives from a conference held in 1987 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Coase's classic article. The first chapter affords an overview of the volume. It is followed by a republication of the 1937 article, and by the three lectures Coase presented at the conference. These lectures provide a lively and informative history of the origins and development of his thought. Subsequent chapters explore a wide-range of theoretical and empirical issues that have arisen in the transaction cost economic tradition. They illustrate the power of the transaction cost approach to enhance understanding not only of business firms, but of problems of economic organization generally. In addition to Coase's work, contributors include Sherwin Rosen, Paul Joskow, Oliver Hart, Harold Demsetz, Scott Masten, Benjamin Klein, as well as the volume's editors, Oliver E. Williamson, and Sidney G. Winter. The Nature of the Firm includes Coase's acceptance speech for his Nobel Prize in Economics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Starting Point.......2003-08-23
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the transaction cost motivated theories of the firm. The whole field started with the 1937 paper by Coase, which one can find here. Three other papers by Coase give a good background on how he came to write that paper and what its implications and influences are. His Nobel lecture is also included. They all make a nice reading and clear up some misunderstandings about Coase's work. Coase is an excellent writer.
The other papers are very good too. I especially liked the one by Harold Demsetz. It points out that there are some important shortcomings to the transactionialist view and outlines a alternative theory of the firm.
Almost all papers can be read without much knowledge about economics and without math, so anyone with an interest in the topic should take a look.
Readings on the "Firm".......2000-07-03
The papers imprinted there include Coase's "The Nature of the Firm" and his Nobel Lecture as well. The works of O. Williamson, O. Hart, S. Rosen, S. Winter, etc on the nature of the firm are also there.
One thing worth to note is that three of the papers are the lectures given by Coase in the 1987 conference (which is due to the 50th anniversery of the publication of his "The Nature of the Firm") are also included. The sub-title of this book speaks for itself.
But I don't know why Cheung's "The Contractual Nature of the Firm" is omitted.

When Ensign Tracy Sugarman packed his seabag and prepared to ship overseas in early 1944, his wife handed him a package containing sketch pads, pens, and a set of watercolors. Fifty years later, she reminded him of the upcoming 50th anniversary of D-Day, which in turn reminded him of the letters, drawings, and watercolors he had sent home. To his astonishment, June Sugarman took him down to the cellar and showed him several brown paper parcels which, when opened, revealed some 400 letters and 77 drawings and watercolors from his corner of World War II.
My War consists of excerpts from those letters, accompanied by dozens of examples of Sugarman's work. In what Stephen Ambrose calls "one of the most compelling accounts of the war I've ever read," Sugarman gracefully describes his experiences in the Navy, from training sessions on the Chesapeake River to his stay in England preparing for the invasion, from the boredom aboard a Liberty ship in the English Channel to the horrors of Utah Beach on D-Day, and from the loneliness of a man away from his new wife to pride in the American forces:
July 25--Off the coast of Normandy: This morning I saw the greatest manifestation of our airpower in all my months overseas, and in particular here in Normandy. For 2 hours we watched wave after wave of bombers move across the sky and head for the lines and Germany. It is one thing to read of thousands of planes attacking, and quite another to see it. It was incredible. No sooner would one wave pass over our heads than another would appear as tiny specks in the distance and with a grace of movement impossible to describe, they would arc across the whole roof of the heavens.
Sugarman's obvious love for his wife suffuses all the entries with a warm, rosy glow. His account differs from many in that he never fired on the enemy and was fired upon only once. But, as he points out in his preface, this is his war, and "every sailor and soldier in World War II fought his own war." Perfect for fans of The Greatest Generation, My War is an excellent addition to any World War II library. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor, Tracy Sugarman was a young man studying to be an illustrator--and falling in love with a tawny-haired girl named June. But for Tracy, as for all Americans, everything changed that December dawn.
Two years later, now married to June, Tracy was on a troopship bound for England, part of the massive Allied buildup for the liberation of Europe. On D-Day he landed on Utah Beach, one young ensign in the greatest military invasion in history.
But Tracy Sugarman was not only a sailor. He was also an artist, who chronicled every aspect of his war in watercolors and sketches and in more than four hundred letters to his wife, who carefully saved everything her new husband sent her. Fifty years later, June Sugarman astonished her husband by showing him his long-forgotten pictures and words: lush watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings set down with breathtaking immediacy in the midst of war, and letters in which the young man poured out his feelings--about the terror and tedium of battle, his own ideals and hopes . . . and, always, his love for his wife.
Here, selected from this treasure trove, are the drawings and watercolors that best portray the war Tracy Sugarman experienced. Interspersed throughout are excerpts of his loving and poignant letters home and, as the capstone of this extraordinary book, the single surviving letter from June to her husband. My War is a luminous, powerful account of a world at war--and a beautifully touching love story.
Customer Reviews:
A story that is both extraordinay and typical.......2007-10-18
Like millions of stories on both sides of World War II, the one contained in this book is both extraordinary and yet typical. Millions of young American men left their neighborhoods and made the first trips of their lives, where their goal was to kill or be killed. Tracy Sugarman joined the Navy and spent time in boats that transferred men and material from England to the coast of France. He was there at D-Day, observing every detail, the planes, bombs and the violent deaths on both sides. A budding artist before the war, he came back to an illustrious career as an illustrator.
He took artist's materials with him to war, and this book is a collection of his sketches, paintings, thoughts and letters to his wife June. Together, they illustrate what war was like for most people, mind-numbing repetitive training, even more mind-numbing sitting around followed by brief periods of terrible action as every man tried to do his job and keep himself and his buddies alive. The only real insights unique to the book are when Sugarman vents his disgust at his fellow soldiers. He is appalled at their racist and ignorant views; he considers them the world's best soldiers in combat, yet some of the world's worst cads when on leave in England. His simple discussions with his wife via letters demonstrate an honesty and openness illustrating the deep bond between them.
Tracy Sugarman was very lucky in many ways, he survived the war intact, he came back to a career he was well suited for and he married the love of his life. All together, they make for an honest and multi-faceted success story.
my war.......2003-10-09
the book is full of love and stories of how hard to it is to hold the relationshipwhen you are in the war. I love the pictures that he drew they really expressed what was going on where he was. You really cant find love like that anymore
A Unique View.......2001-07-24
Tracy Sugarman has given readers a unique perspective of World War II in this lovely book full of his letters to his wife while he was overseas. What makes it really special are the wonderful drawings Sugarman did during this time.
This book gave me insights into the feelings of someone fighting a war--it could be Everyman and Everywar, a soldier far from home making difficult decisions every minute of every day. Those feelings are probably universal. The book was not so much about the specifics of a war, but what it was like for one particular soldier.
I was also reminded of the feeling of duty and honor and dedication to one's country that is not often expressed any more.
This book would be a good addition to any history class in any school.
captivating.......2001-06-04
My husband and I both read and loved this book. My husband wanted to immediately read it again. I really admired the man Tracy Sugarman. His letters and sketches told you exactly the title "my war". We were able to see thru Tracy's eyes the impact war and of being away from home and his wife. A very interesting book to reread over and over again.
Very different.......2001-05-02
In the battle of the "My War" books, I will take Tracy Sugarman's easily over Andy Rooney's. This book is different. It is not really about war although the subject is unavoidable. The book is about a nice young man who loved his wife and country and did his best to serve to the best of his abilities. He got through it thanks to his art, and thanks to his wife, his works survived for the education and enjoyment of generations. The fact that his works are "real time" works and not reflections of his memories make them even more special. After reading this book, it should go on your coffee table. As a quick postscript, some previous reviewers commented on some examples of "blue" language and objected. But sometimes that sort of thing is appropriate. I doubt if many readers would really mind too much. It is a fine work.
