Book Description
This text helps students hit the road with a practical set of tools, and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions. The goal is to introduce a new Principles of Accounting text that better reflects a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material.
The authors have taken a new "macro- to micro-" approach to the Principles of Accounting course by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle (although the Accounting Cycle is thoroughly covered in Chapters 3 and 4). The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. They motivate students by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their future career.

This transformation, as important for industrial managers, workers, and consumers as the initial creation of the factory, is the subject of Daniel Nelsons illuminating synthesis, updated and expanded to include the scholarship of recent decades. This edition of Managers and Workers describes the interrelations between technological and organizational innovation, including such familiar developments as the spread of mass production and the emergence of scientific management, and other developments that were little known when the first edition of this book appeared, such as the revolution in factory architecture, the changing role of the foreman, and the spread of personnel work. The volume also incorporates the best scholarship of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, some of it stimulated by Managers and Workers, and includes a new chapter on the role of organized labor in the early-twentieth-century factory. The focus of the work, however, remains the individual managers and workers who created the twentieth-century factory system. The preeminent historian of the American business firm, Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., reviewed the first edition of Managers and Workers in The Journal of Economic History, predicting that this book would long remain the standard work on the origins of the American factory. The second edition will make that prediction true for the 1990s and beyond.

Good essays, but book is poor value.......1999-08-12
These three essays are crisp, clear statements of Wallace Stegner's beliefs about the influence of the American West on American consciousness.
Please note, however, that these three essays appear with 13 others in Stegner's book _Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs_. With a total of 16 essays, that book is a much better value than _American West as Living Space_.
Required reading for all citizens........1998-10-19
In this short, succinct book, a collection of three lectures given in the 1980s, Stegner sums up the history, problems, and ever-so-bleak future of the American West. He paints the clearest and most inarguable case that has yet seen print against the overdevelopement of the West's water, land, and resources and, jarringly, recants his youthful appelation of the West as "the geography of hope."This should be required reading in every high school, every college, and every home in the West--make that the entire country--no, make it the world.

Recent but............2001-03-16
There is really a problem when you need some turistic information about Seychelles. Seychelles Insight Pocket Guide is a help, but not so huge as i supposed it would be. Never the less, i must say i was surprised to read some news that other reviews don't even talk about, this means that the authors were well informed. This book would be more appropriated to those people who choose the beaches in North of Mahe Island (Beau Valon) to spend their holidays, but as the island is not so big the people who choose not to saty in the North will also take some advises in consideration. But some information given is accessible in some specialized sites in the net, so the were not many surprises in the texts. But one think is true, all the information is well "compressed" in this Inside Pocket Guide. But it lacks some useful information, such as, prices of the tours recommended, the total of kilometers in each itinerary recomended, the time it may took, weel more pratical data. And some "face lifting" in this kind of book wouldn't be so silly.

The Leaving and Other Stories.......2005-02-14
The Leaving and Other Stories by Budge Wilson is a collection of nine stories set in Nova Scotia about girls who are being pushed into the adult world. They face challenges like peer pressure and problems with friends and family.
One of my favorite stories is "The Metaphor." It is about a seventh-grader named Charlotte and her literature and creative writing teacher, Miss Hancock. Miss Hancock is very enthusiastic about her job, and wears lots of makeup and flashy clothes. While her students love her, most adults consider her "brassy" and think she's too overenthusiastic. One day in class, Miss Hancock introduces her students to the metaphor. She gives the class an assignment to write metaphors about people and things they know, and Charlotte writes a long, intricate metaphor about how her mother is a flawless concrete building filled with machines. On the bottom few floors, Charlotte writes, people track mud all over the building and "mar its perfection." Miss Hancock is thrilled by the long metaphor (although a little disturbed by its meaning) and encourages Charlotte to write more. Charlotte starts writing metaphors in the bathtub at night.
Then the story flashes forward a few years and Charlotte is starting her first day of high school. She's thrilled to find that her literature teacher is-Miss Hancock1 However, the other students think Miss Hancock's a joke and ridicule her every day, until she comes to school every day as a beaten-up wreck. Charlotte thinks she could stop this, but peer pressure convinces her not to. Then one day, Miss Hancock is killed by a bus. Charlotte is horrified and thinks that it's all her fault. At the end of the story, Charlottte is sadly writing a metaphor about Miss Hancock.
Many of the stories are like that. All of them have preteen and teenage girls as the protagonists, and many of them have the girls facing some kind of loss, be it of a teacher, parent, or friend. I would recommend this book to any girl who has ever faced problems with friends or family.
The Leaving.......2000-06-06
The stories in the leaving will really help you in life, most of them will make you laught. It is a great book and worth the money.
The Leaving is a perfect book for sixth through eighth grade.......1998-06-21
If you are looking for a book of short stories that will keep your sixth to eighth grade students and readers debating about what the characters' true motives are all about, this is a perfect book of short stories with fiesty female protagonists. I have taught The Leaving for six years and I am still haunted by the characters, especially Lysandra and Elaine. Because Wilson uses first person "unreliable" narrators, she forces the readers to wonder about what the other characters are thinking. We never know why the brilliant Miss Hancock left seventh grade to teach tenth grade, consequently losing control of her class. The title story is a perfect excuse to tell students about Betty Friedan and life for women before The Feminine Mystique. What happened between the mother and Manuel Jenkins that caused her to cry alone at her dresser after he left and changed her family forever? I first read The Leaving with a faculty book discussion group and have been giving friends copies ever since.Each story is a gem.
A seventh grade review.......1998-03-11
I liked this book because it was written very well. The writer wasn't afraid to say things bluntly and to be honest about things. I also liked how the stories told about life and what things happen during these young girls growth into adulthood in Canada

Lucy teaches at my alma mater, and tho I never got a chance to take a class with her, when I saw this collection at the library, I just had to grab it. Wow, I really regret not having taken a class with her! These stories are all wonderfully written, funny (Safe-T-Man had me in stitches!), sexy (without being trashy)... just great stuff. I read the whole book twice. I may read it again before it's due back at the library. ;)
