    Book Description

Since the 1960s the per capita incomes of the resource-poor countries have grown significantly faster than those of the resource-abundant countries. In fact, in recent years economic growth has been inversely proportional to the share of natural resource rents in GDP, so that the small mineral-driven economies have performed least well and the oil-driven economies worst of all. Yet the mineral-driven resource-rich economies have high growth potential because the mineral exports boost their capacity to invest and to import. "Resource Abundance and Economic Development" explains the disappointing performance of resource-abundant countries by extending the growth accounting framework to include natural and social capital. The resulting synthesis identifies two contrasting development trajectories: the competitive industrialization of the resource-poor countries and the staple trap of many resource-abundant countries. The resource-poor countries are less prone to policy failure than the resource-abundant countries because social pressures force the political state to align its interests with the majority poor and follow relatively prudent policies. Resource-abundant countries are more likely to engender political states in which vested interests vie to capture resource surpluses (rents) at the expense of policy coherence. A longer dependence on primary product exports also delays industrialization, heightens income inequality, and retards skill accumulation. Fears of 'Dutch disease' encourage efforts to force industrialization through trade policy to protect infant industry. The resulting slow-maturing manufacturing sector demands transfers from the primary sector that outstrip the natural resource rents and sap the competitiveness of the economy. The chapters in this collection draw upon historical analysis and models to show that a growth collapse is not the inevitable outcome of resource abundance and that policy counts. Malaysia, a rare example of successful resource-abundant development, is contrasted with Ghana, Bolivia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Argentina, which all experienced a growth collapse. The book also explores policies for reviving collapsed economies with reference to Costa Rica, South Africa, Russia and Central Asia. It demonstrates the importance of initial conditions to successful economic reform.

      Description:
An analysis using reserves as a measure of resource abundance suggests that natural resource abundance has not been a significant structural determinant of economic growth in the seventies and eighties. The story behind the effect of natural resources on economic growth is a complex one that typical growth regressions do not capture well. Preliminary evidence suggests that natural resources may affect economic growth through both 'positive' and 'negative channels.' Potential reverse causality running from these 'channels' to fuel and mineral reserves further complicates the analysis. I conjecture that, as economic historians suggest, the ability of a country to exploit its resource base depends critically on the nature of the learning process involved.

        Description:
This paper studies the link between resource abundance and human capital accumulation. It reviews the commonly used indicators of resource abundance and human capital accumulation. The case for a form of resource curse in human capital accumulation is not robust to reasonable changes in these indicators. In fact, subsoil wealth and resource rents per capita are shown to be significantly correlated with improved indicators of human capital accumulation. If mineral wealth is what authors have in mind when they refer to natural resource abundance, then they should choose indicators that measure this concept as accurately as possible.

                Book Description

In today's economy, job loss will likely affect each of us at some point in our careers. Layoffs used to happen only when times were tough, but even a bustling economy is no protection when positions are eliminated, plants are closed, and jobs are shipped overseas in search of even higher profit margins. A toolkit for survival and coping with unemployment, this book explains how to minimize your chances of being laid off, how to negotiate the best outcome during the severance process, and how to re-enter the job market from a position of strength. This book is as important for employers, human resource managers, and outplacement specialists as it is for employees. Just as employees need to be aware of their rights and options, employers need to understand the ramification of their actions. This book provides an understanding of the hiring and firing process from both perspectives. Issues include:
              • How to examine and negotiate your termination package
              • How to determine if you need an attorney--and how to select one
              • How to prove your dismissal was inappropriate or illegal
              • How to move from a bad job situation to a better one

An excellent resource to read cover-to-cover OR to scan through as you transition through your personal situation. This book is loaded with practical, legally sound and well-thought-out advice. As a recently laid off executive I found this book to be full of valuable information to help me cope with the job loss, organize an effective job search plan and be better prepared for the next job. A short review like this cannot do justice to the amount of helpful and practical information contained in the book. I highly recommend the book to any executive who has been laid off or feels at risk.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it at half the price........2000-05-30

                            This book is outrageously overpriced.

The major problem is that the authors drone on and on in each chapter about the same stuff. Most of the chapters would have been sufficient at half of their 30 page length. After about 15 pages and the third repetition of stuff that's already been explained, my brain started to wander. I'd have to go back and force myself to pay attention to what was being said.

Another major problem is the utter lack of editing performed. The sentence structure throughout the book is terrible. The syntax and choice of words is confusing. I'd have to re-read certain sentences several times before I could understand what the authors were trying to say. The English in general is also bad. Over and over, there were sentences that started with "But...". Then there were times when verbs were used as nouns, which is acceptable, but, because of the terrible sentence structure, it looked like they were being used as verbs. This made it almost impossible to read.

The only reason this book didn't get one star was the fact that some of the information was actually useful. The majority of the book, however, was just droll, boring repetition of stuff I didn't need to know in order to grasp the concepts. It also needed to have more concrete examples of stuff. It started out doing that well, but, by chapter 6 or 7, it just became too abstract. There must be a better book out there on this subject.

                                              3 out of 5 stars God's Bomber?.......2007-08-22

While the descriptions of his exploits in WWII were OK, he reminds me of the character that Telly Savalas played in the "Dirty Dozen". He judges everyone by his high moral standards and sticks his nose up to anyone who doesn't measure up. Of course, he did push the toggle switch that dropped about a quarter million pounds of bombs on women and children. He said that bothered him a bit but, what the heck, it's war right? I think he should rename his book "Bombing for Jesus". Not the kind of guy you would want to hang around with.

5 out of 5 stars An honest and touching memoir.......2004-12-27

Mr. Stevens writes with refreshing honesty. He claims his book is not about heroics but the bravery and courage of his own and the other men in the 8th Air Force touch the reader in a way books written to impress or excite cannot. He shows us real ordinary young men at war in a way only those who have been there could know. A must read for students of history and WWII.

                                              5 out of 5 stars I Felt I Was There!.......2004-09-03

Charles "Norm" Stevens is a gifted writer. His descriptions give you the sense that you are there experiencing the life of one bombardier in 1944. The scent of shaving cream, the aromas in the plane, the suspense waiting for the plan of the day to be revealed, the views of the land below, peaceful, and chaotic, all are masterfully described by Lt. Stevens. The most routine actions are colorfully written with anticipation leading to the final mission and the return home. This memoir is a "good read" and one to be recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating closeup look at a World War II bombardier.......2004-03-25

A beautifully written, step by step account of Steven's experiences as part of a bomb group stationed in England during World War II. Not only does he let you feel the tensions that derive from takeoffs to bomb runs to returns to base of each mission, but the content is almost lyrical in its descriptions.

                                              I recommend it highly.
