Book Description
This volume contributes to a growing consensus about effective workplace practices. The collection combines detailed studies of single industries (automobile assembly, apparel, and machine tools) with cross-industry studies of financial performance. Compared to most past investigations, the research here has better measures of both workplace practices and organizational performance. The contributors find that systems of innovative human resource management practices can have large effects on business performance. Success does not come from any single innovation, but from a coherent system encompassing pay, training, and employee involvement.

Book Description
The Farm as Natural Habitat is a vital new contribution to the debate about agriculture and its impacts on the land. Arising from the conviction that the agricultural landscape as a whole could be restored to a healthy diversity, the book challenges the notion that the dominant agricultural landscape - bereft of its original vegetation and wildlife and despoiled by chemical runoff - is inevitable if we are to feed ourselves. Contributors bring together insights and practices from the fields of conservation biology, sustainable agriculture, and environmental restoration to link agriculture and biodiversity, farming and nature, in celebrating a unique alternative to conventional agriculture.
Rejecting the idea that "ecological sacrifice zones" are a necessary part of feeding a hungry world, the book offers compelling examples of an alternative agriculture that can produce not only healthful food, but fully functioning ecosystems and abundant populations of native species. Contributors include Collin Bode, George Boody, Brian DeVore, Arthur (Tex) Hawkins, Buddy Huffaker, Rhonda Janke, Richard Jefferson, Nick Jordan, Cheryl Miller, Heather Robertson, Carol Shennan, Judith Soule, Beth Waterhouse, and others.
The Farm as Natural Habitat is both hopeful and visionary, grounded in real examples, and guided by a commitment to healthy land and thriving communities. It is the first book to offer a viable approach to addressing the challenges of protecting and restoring biodiversity on private agricultural land and is essential reading for anyone concerned with issues of land or biodiversity conservation, farming and agriculture, ecological restoration, or the health of rural communities and landscapes.

Rejects the idea of "ecological sacrifice zones".......2002-06-07
The Farm As Natural Habitat: Reconnecting Food Systems With Ecosystems edited by Dana L. Jackson (Associate Director of the Land Stewardship Project, White Bear Lake, Minnesota) and Laura L. Jackson (Associate Professor of Biology, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa) is a thoughtful, extensively researched and meticulously presented compendium of essays by a variety of learned and expert authors focusing on the interaction between agriculture and the environment. Emphatically rejecting the idea that "ecological sacrifice zones" are required to feed the hungry, The Farm As Natural Habitat reaches out to explore how agriculture and biodiversity can exist in harmony. A first-rate, eye-opening book for farmers around the world, The Farm As Natural Habitat is a strongly urged addition to academic reference collections (especially for agricultural colleges), governmental policy makers and department of natural resources/farm bureau administrative personnel, and the personal reading list for anyone engaged in agriculture ranging from the "family farm" to agribusiness.

best scifi compilation ive ever read.......2003-04-04
Ive had this book since 1989. Most collections of short stories have a few interesting stories and the rest are filler but thats not the case here. The sheer number of excellent stories in this one volume is a shock. the common thread being that each had space vessels in it, Though the stories have little more in common than that, except being excellent. My favorites would have to be Far Centaurus by A.E. Van Voght, a moving tale of a suspended animation ship. A Chance Encounter by A. Bertram Chandler, a romantic first contact story. The Oceans are Wide- a really cool novella from Frank M. Robinson on one of my favorite subjects-generation ships. Avoidance Situation by James McConnell
a chilling tale of First Contact with the Dakn Empire. If you can find this collection, buy it!

Book Description
The age of merely looking at the heavens, of mapping and cataloguing the positions of the stars down to fainter and fainter limits, is past. Throughout that long period the pace of astronomical discovery was necessarily very slow and for centuries it remained virtually static. The invention of the telescope and then the spectroscope brought about an acceleration in the rate of progress which has continued unabated to the present day. Scarcely a year now passes without some spectacular advance being made, so that today, with the co-operation of modern techniques in physics, chemistry, rocket technology and biology, many of the older notions have been completely overthrown and new ideas set up in their place. And now the rapidly developing techniques of rocket research have made it possible to carry astronomical instruments beyond the atmosphere which confines our visual and photographic observations to an extremely narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Now we are able to view the universe in ultra-violet and infra-red light, and by X-rays and radio emissions which are otherwise almost completely absorbed by the atmosphere.
Each problem that is solved, however, only serves to present us with a host of others in increasing complexity. The boundaries are being pushed back steadily, it is true, but the realm of the partially understood and the totally unknown is still as great as ever, and it is with this vast no-man's-land of astronomy that this book is concerned. It deals, amongst other subjects, with astronomical instruments and their application, recent discoveries in the solar system, stellar evolution, the exploding stars, the galaxies, quasars, pulsars, the possibilities of extraterrestial life, relativity, etc. With this book as a guide, the reader cannot fail to experience some of the tremendous fascination of present-day astronomy and its innumerable unsolved problems.

A Canonical Work.......2007-06-23
"Time and Time Again: Reports from a Boundary of the Universe" deserves to be regarded as a canonical work for humankind's journey into the 21st century. I first discovered Julius Thomas Fraser through "Time, Passion and Knowledge" in the 1980's and have been amazed by the continuing depth and breadth of his thinking. Fraser was born in 1923 in Hungary and emigrated to the US in 1946. Let us hope that this 84 year old thinker continues to lead us and that his works will reach a broader audience. The world sorely needs J. T. Fraser : "History is now at all gates, everywhere and all the time. I do not mean agreement on the dates of one or other king. I mean an agreement about the origin and evolution of man, the origin and evolution of the universe."
In my view Fraser takes the standard raised by luminaries such as Kant, Goethe and Karl Popper and passes it to us as a challenge to seek truth and nothing less while at the same time recognising that absolutes do not await us at the end of our journey. Rather like Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game master, Julius Thomas Fraser plays with the Study of Time with intellectual rigor and lyrical beauty. Those who have the energy and integrity to join his intellectual journey will be better for it. We need more men like Fraser and fewer polemicists whether they be atheists or religious.
This book is beautifully bound with a cover of David Caspar Friedrich's "Wanderer Overlooking a Sea of Fog". We who are honest know that we are wanderers overlooking a sea of fog. Thinkers like Fraser can take us by the hand. This book will have pride of place in my library, alongside his other works.

Book Description
An assessment of the recent achievements and relative strengths of two developing techniques for characterising surfaces at the nanometer scale: (i) local probe methods, including scanning tunnelling microscopy and its derivatives; and (ii) nanoscale photoemission and absorption spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The keynote lectures were delivered by some of the world's best scientists in the field and some of the topics covered include: (1) The possible application of STM in atomically resolved chemical analysis. (2) The principles of scanning force/friction and scanning near-field optical microscopes. (3) The scanning photoemission electron microscopes built at ELETTRA and SRRC, with a description of synchrotron radiation microscopy. (4) Recent progress in the development of spatially-resolved photoelectron microscopy, especially the use of zone plate photon optics. (5) The present status of non-scanning photoemission microscopy with slow electrons. (6) the BESSY 2 project for a non-scanning photoelectron microscope with electron optics. (7) Spatially-resolved in situ reaction studies of chemical waves and oscillatory phenomena with the UV photoemission microscope.

Book Description
He was the namesake and eldest son of the twenty-sixth president of the United States. A lesser man would have languished in the shadows of a father as famous and flamboyant as Theodore Roosevelt Sr. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., however, was anything but a lesser man. Throughout his life, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. strove to be a credit to his father. Certainly he succeeded.
Customer Reviews:
Good, solid biography of an important but overlooked America.......2003-09-07
Theodore Roosevelt Jr.: The Life of a War Hero
by H. Paul Jeffers is a solid, well-researched biography of a man whose accomplishments would have been more widely publicized if not for the famous name he had to bear in life. Roosevelt, Jr was a man with a strong personality and great capability who made his own mark on the first half of this century through his public service and experiences in both world wars. Jeffers sets Roosevelt, Jr in the context of his famous family and then proceeds to make a strong case as to why he deserves to be remembered in his own right. In "Mornings on Horseback," David McCullough described how Theodore Roosevelt, Sr grew up in a close and insular family that provided strength and love to each member. Clearly, the senior Roosevelt brought this lesson to his own family which spurred them on to great accomplishments. Recommended.
Jeffer's Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.: Life of a War Hero.......2002-11-24
In general, this is a good biography and reference source on Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. The bibliography of suggested readings by and about Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. is the most comprehensive one I've found. My only criticism is that whole sections of this book appear to consist of re-workings of two earlier books on Roosevelt -- Edward Renehan's The Lion's Pride and Mrs. Roosevelt's memoir, The Day Before Yesterday. Those who have already read the two earlier books may feel somewhat let down by the lack of new information. Otherwise, this is book is enjoyable and uplifting. The many anecdotes of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.'s courage, common sense and humanity (not to mention his complete lack of self-absorption) are encouraging and make this book worthwhile.
Like father, like son..........2002-09-22
I have waited a while for a biography of TR, Jr. I have read "The Lion's Pride" (highly recommend this as well). Although the first few chapters of the book talks more of TR than his son, it is an overall very interesting read. I find it amazing how much TR, Jr. followed in the footsteps of his father.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about an amazing man who led an extrordinary life.
Not the Morris/McCullough-quality!.......2002-09-07
I enjoyed the book regarding TR Jr.'s time as governor of Puerto
Rico and the Phillipines and World War I & II because I didn't know much about his life during these periods (except what Ed Renehan and Sylvia Morris wrote in their books). What I did not like about Jeffers' book are a few errors he put in, which could have been avoided by better research: For example, he wrote a few times (like on page 28) that TR (the president)said that he feels "as fit as a bull moose" in 1898! As far as I know this expression was coined only in 1912 when a mad man tried to kill TR in Milwaukee. He also writes twice that "The Roosevelt family of Sagamore Hill" was written by Mr. Harbaugh (pages 16 and 30). We know that Hermann Hagedorn wrote this great book!
It is amazing how many qualities of TR we can find in his oldest son! Jeffers book is a good read, but from my point of view not the great narrative as we know it from Edmund Morris or David McCullough!
Generally quite good.......2002-06-27
I enjoyed this book for the most part and found it largely accurate. There are a few little glitches, however. For example, TR Jr. is NOT, as the book suggests, buried at Sagamore Hill. He is buried at the American Cemetery, Normandy. That being said, Jeffers has generally done a very good job of summing up a fascinating man. For those interested in TR and his children, I'd also recommend Edward Renehan's THE LION'S PRIDE: THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND HIS FAMILY IN PEACE AND WAR, published by Oxford University Press and available through Amazon.
