    Book Description

Public accountants are being attacked from all sides. Stock and bond holders, the United States Congress, the Securities and Exchange Commission, clients, and even members of the profession itself, all accuse accountants of failing in their watchdog duties as auditors and of approving financial statements that follow questionable accounting rules. Academic as well as other critics fault the profession for failing to innovate, particularly in respect to accounting for the effects of inflation. The attacks often take the form of litigation that has resulted in the payment of hundreds of millions of dollars in damages by firms and their liability insurers. This situation is not unique to the United States. Similar attacks can be observed in Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Indeed, the viability of the external audit is today in question, as public accountants increasingly seek to avoid potentially ruinous engagements and diversify into other activities. Drawing on his long and extensive experience as both practitioner and academic, the author traces the history of accounting and auditing, analyzing the factors---domestic and international---that have led to the contemporary problems of the profession. He prescribes measures that can and should be taken in order to restore public accounting to its former status and esteem. He proposes major changes in federal and state legislation, the current system of accountancy education and training, accounting and auditing standard setting, and existing models of historical financial reporting. In addition, he presents a blueprint for a new type of financial report designed to improve the utility of financial statements for investment decisions.

                        Book Description

Though few of us now live close to the soil, the world we inhabit has been sculpted by our long national saga of settlement. At the heart of our identity lies the notion of the family farm, as shaped by European history and reshaped by the vast opportunities of the continent. It lies at the heart of Jane Brox's personal story, too: she is the daughter of immigrant New England farmers whose way of life she memorialized in her first two books but has not carried on.

In this clear-eyed, lyrical account, Brox twines the two narratives, personal and historical, to explore the place of the family farm as it has evolved from the pilgrims' brutal progress at Plymouth to the modern world, where much of our food is produced by industrial agriculture while the small farm is both marginalized and romanticized. In considering the place of the farm, Brox also considers the rise of textile cities in America, which encroached not only upon farms and farmers but upon the sense of commonality that once sustained them; and she traces the transformation of the idea of wilderness--and its intricate connection to cultivation--which changed as our ties to the land loosened, as terror of the wild was replaced by desire for it. Exploring these strands with neither judgment nor sentimentality, Brox arrives at something beyond a biography of the farm: a vivid depiction of the half-life it carries on in our collective imagination.

5 out of 5 stars An emotional and at times spiritual remembrance.......2004-12-09

Clearing Land: Legacies Of The American Farm combines memoir and history, drawing upon the author's own experience growing up on a family farm with the economic realities that are forcing such farms to extinction in the modern day. Poetic in its reminiscence of a daily life deeply intertwined with nature, cultivating plants and animals, and the joy of simply being alive, Clearing Land is a powerful firsthand testimony sure to evoke memories both pleasant and questionable of those who also lived and worked in agriculture. An emotional and at times spiritual remembrance.

A wonderful detailed, serious look inside the cell in two volumes, profusely illustrated. At the level (naturally) of a Scientific American article, but much longer. De Duve is a Nobel prize winner too.

Christian de Duve (MD) was on of the winners of the 1974 Nobel prize in physiology and medicine, for "the structural and functional organization of the cell." He wrote this set of 2 books for high school students. It's about the many parts of the human cell, and as a huge bonus, he describes his work in using centrifuges to investigate human cell components.

How wonderful to have such a knowledgeable person, who writes so well, teach and discuss his technques! Dr. de Duve treats readers as very intelligent but un-informed people. There's nothing wrong with being uninformed, that's why we read books -- to become informed.

This set of two books have very excellent illustrations. These two books should be textbooks for high school and freshman level biology courses.

This is a beautiful record of Texas icons in the form of unique small hidden away places, photographed by Mark Dean in stunning black and white, with fascinating commentary by Susie Flatau. Susie interviewed the owners of many wonderful old landmark restaurants and bars, and she has woven a fascinating web of stories about these fast disappearing places. Descriptions of the places and neighborly chats with the visitors and owners are carefully recorded. The book will take the reader to another place and time and bring back fond memories for anyone who has ever sat at a counter and ordered a hamburger and a beer or a chocolate soda.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Living Museum--with food and drink!.......2003-12-08

We think things will stay the same for a long time--and some things do. In these pages nostalgia reigns as well as an existential awareness of the present, and perhaps a foreboding. The photographs capture the scenes of what may soon pass away. We hope, of course, that this will not happen...that there will always be a quaint soda fountain, a small cross-roads grill, a checkered-cloth-covered table at which to sit and gaze at a chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, iceberg lettuce salad with jello, banana pudding and assorted fresh fruit pies all waiting for one's poised fork. And the coffee--country coffee. Susie Kelly Flatau and Mark Dean have done us all a favor in capturing these living museums of food and drink. There are thousands more within the confines of that "whole other country." I have visited several, but I realize how many of these doors I haven't walked through. This would be a great book to serve as a guide for a great series of trips. Go before they go. I went back to a cross roads store once to buy another hunk of rat cheese as a snack while taking a trip on my bicycle. The building was still there, but a small sign said, "Closed for good." Not good to my way of thinking. Buy Susie's book and start your pilgrimage.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A great gift.......2000-12-22

I bought this book for my mother and brother-in-law and now I think I'll get me a copy. Dean's photographs capture some of the counters that I grew up at, but I've only been to one of the places represented in the book. The wonderful thing about this book is that, even if your local drug store of cafe is not in it, there's a place just like it. The thesis, that there is a distinct culture around the counters of Texas, is interesting and well developed. A hardcover version would earn the 5th star.

                                      Book Description

A game of private detective turns deadly for an unlikely sleuth combo.

How did Abbie Thompson end up a sidekick to Edna Merkel, Senior Citizen Pseudo-Sleuth? It all started when Abbie was so furious at her father for breaking up their family that she acted without thinking and was arrested for malicious mischief. The judge decided to give Abbie a chance at a clean record and arranged for her to volunteer in a program in which teens are matched with the elderly.

Abbie's "friend," Mrs. Merkel, is a cranky, difficult woman who's a member of the Buckler's Bloodhounds. The Bloodhounds provide the police with information about scams or frauds in the community. But Edna Merkel is too active a member, and after she brags that she's on to something big, she's attacked and ends up hospitalized. Suddenly the private investigator game is real and, with the help of Mrs. Merkel's indecipherable notebook, only Abbie can figure out who did it. But will Abbie get to the assailant before the assailant gets to her?

                                      From the Hardcover edition.

Besides "A Deadly Game of Magic" (another book by Nixon), this book is my favorite Nixon book. I had bought quite a few of her books, and began to get bored with them. They are all about the same thing!- A teenage girl who lives in/ near Texas, and something wrong happens. Don't get me wrong, some of the books have their own twists that make them stand out (like Nobody's There), but that is the general idea. This book is about a girl, Abbie, that is mad at her father and his new girlfriend, and she throws rocks at his girlfrieds' window. She gets arrested, and the judge says that if she helps a senior citizen for a year, ahe will get off easy. The problem is, that she gets assigned to Mrs. Merkel, and cranky, and fussy old lady that has already had two other girls assigned to her. Mrs. Merkel becomes a "private eye" and when she gets a big lead on a mystery, she ends up clubbed on the head, in a coma, and in the hospital. It's finally up to Abbie to catch this person(s) and she does so with the aid of a notebook that Mrs. Merkel used to write her clues in. Once again, this book is very good, and has several twists and turns in the book that makes you want to keep on reading.

Abby, a troubled girl on probation, is assigned to care for a horrible old lady (you'll hate her) and is drawn into a mystery when said old battleax is mugged in her home.Who would want to hit old Mrs.Cottingly with a perfectly good and expensive horse statue.

Nobody's There starts off like this, Abbie gets mad at her father for leaving her and her mother and brother, and commits a crime with out thinking. The judge asigns her to a program called Friend to Friend, where she gets assigned to a crabby old lady, Mrs.Murkle. Mrs.Murkle sees herself as a private investigator. She knows the scoop on everyone.
One day Abbie goes over to Mrs.Murkle's house, to find Mrs.Murkle sprawled on her living room floor with a major head injury. Abbie vows to find who tried to kill Mrs.Murkle.
The plot isn't too original. It's kind of boring at times and the end wasn't really exciting. To me the most disappointing thing in the book was the ending. It didn't really have a climax. But, it was okay. I wouldn't read it again.

This is a wonderful guide for Catholic parents. I wonder about the title because I think Catholics who are active now in the Church know that being Catholic isn't about guilt but about freedom and grace. I can't speak for the experience years ago, but...for me, the "guiltless" part of the book wasn't what made it worth the money, but rather the "parenting" part. It's full of great ideas for building up communication and worship within the family, for creating greater opportunities for spirituality and prayer with your kids. I think it's a great book for any Catholic parent.
