Customer Reviews:
Good resource tool........2000-06-29
This book is packed with quick and helpful information for a non-profit organization. It appears to be written at a level that most accounting people can easily understand, but it maybe difficult for the average lay person. The Appendix provide useful information in a check list format, but is hard to read due to the small size and angle of the inserts.

Organizational learning, the examination of how organizations learn as groups rather than as individuals, is a fast growing area of interest, and is now considered an essential factor in business success. This new edition of an already popular text critically examines traditional assumptions about organization and strategy, providing key readings by renowned international authors to help the reader understand and manage the challenge of organizational learning. How Organizations Learn links the two key concepts of leadership and the learning organization in this text, bringing together the key theories and suggesting new directions for studying and managing organizations. The choice of readings highlights the potential synergy between leading and learning, and how organizational structure and management processes impact upon learning, and includes work by numerous key academics. This will be a core text for courses in Organizational Learning and Knowledge Management at advanced undergraduate, MBA and executive training level, and a supplementary text for courses in Strategic Management, HRM and OB.

Dangerous Nation
ASIN: 0813123925 |
Book Description
From the moment he took the oath of office in April 1945, Harry Truman was required to make difficult decisions in an increasingly dangerous world. The results--notably the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization--were the building blocks of containment, a strategic approach usually associated with George F. Kennan.
In this fresh account, based on primary sources, Elizabeth Edwards Spalding argues that it was Truman himself, shaped by history, experience, and religious faith, who outlined and directed America's practice of containment. In so doing, he established a new liberal internationalism that became the dominant bipartisan consensus on U.S. foreign policy in the post-World War II era.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on Truman.......2006-05-17
Democrats struggling to develop a foreign policy vision in the post-9/11 world would do well to study Harry Truman's tough response to Soviet aggression following the Second World War. This book, based on years of primary research, is an excellent introduction to the subject.

From Shane to Kill Bill: Rethinking the Western (New Approaches to Film Genre)
ASIN: 1592132545 |
Book Description
Though the United States emerged from World War II with superpower status and quickly entered a period of economic prosperity, the stresses and contradictions of the Cold War nevertheless cast a shadow over American life. The same period marked the heyday of the western film. Cowboys as Cold Warriors shows that this was no coincidence. It examines many of the significant westerns released between 1946 and 1962, analyzing how they responded to and influenced the cultural climate of the country.
Author Stanley Corkin discusses a dozen films in detail, connecting them to each other and to numerous others. He considers how these cultural productions both embellished the myth of the American frontier and reflected the era in which they were made.

GOD-LIKE ACCOMPLISHMENTS - TRIBUTE TO AIR FORCE SPEC OPS.......2004-12-22
Haas has an unbeatable book on Air Force Special Operations. This book covers the periods from WWII with high lights about the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, forerunner to the CIA and Green Berets) onto Korea covering air missions on psychological operations and support efforts, rolling into the late 50s early 60s coving various clandestine and covert operations, like the "Bay of Pigs". Haas then picks up with the 2nd Indochina war starting in the early 60s with Laos wrapping it up the Vietnam section with the Son Tay Raid. This book also covers Medal of Honor winners and other heroes and personalities of Air Force special operations. The book has an index and bibliography.
I rated this book 4 instead 5 stars for one reason. There are to versions of this book both soft cover, but the problem lays in that one version is printed in full color on high quality glossy pages and the other completely in black & white on low end paper, both soft covers are the same quality. This book being primarily and illustrated history with pictures, illustrations, charts and diagrams on practically every page it looses a lot of its luster in B&W. I guess if you never seen the color version it would not matter but I own both, because I borrowed a copy (color version) from a friend and liked it enough to add it to my library, I ordered the book on line an got the B&W version, so I went on the hunt and found another copy in color (FYI: Air University Press, Alabama, 1997 printed the color edition), big pain in the but and costly! Over all I highly recommend this book in ANY version it is truly a landmark edition to US Air Force Special Operation and American Spec Ops in general. Great Job Haas!

From the Boston Globe, MY BACK PAGES, By Katherine A. Powers.......1999-12-21
11/21/99 - Montaigne was prompted to write his great work by the death of his best friend, the only man with whom he felt he could truly commune. Indeed, the death of someone close is a great prompter of memoirs as a way of filling the silence. ''In the Failing Light'' by David Tillman (Creative Arts Book Company, $16.95, paperback) is a husband's memoir of his wife's battle with metastatic breast cancer, diagnosed at an advanced stage when their only child was an infant. Though expected to die within months, she in fact survived for more than six years.
Tillman's memoir of this time is filled with justifiable outrage at a few high-handed doctors, a ruthlessly close-fisted insurance company, and a couple of other officious bodies. But for all this, the book is a sweet and melancholy tale, bracingly lacking in self-pity. Tillman invests the life that goes on around the suffering family with that poignancy that ordinary activity acquires when ordinariness is gone forever. Waiting in a hospital for his wife to emerge from an operation, he observes the cleaning staff: ''The women, their mops abandoned by the doorway, spoke Russian amongst themselves while the little Puerto Rican man stood silent, leaning on his broom, smiling to himself as he watched their large rumps.'' It is Tillman's mixing of humor and sadness that elevates his memoir above the pedestrian.
Atlanta Constitution, 10/12/99, Patricia Guthrie.......1999-12-13
A beautifully told memoir by a husband who learns on his third wedding anniversary that his wife has advanced breast cancer. Doctors give her just months to live, which stretches to seven years. She's able to watch her only child grow up and balances dance recitals and PTA meetings with one therapy after another, including bone marrow harvesting. While she manages the disease, her husband manages the "zoo" of the medical system: the callous doctors and twisted logic of insurance companies. Through it all, his mantra becomes "you'll live to be 100," while his wife accepts that she will not. Especially good for any couple struggling with terminal cancer.
Touching story of love in the midst of dying........1999-09-25
I was privileged to know David Tillman and to briefly meet his wife Minda as he was writing this book about her seven year battle to survive breast cancer. The story is incredibly moving, delivering all of an almost old fashioned love that flourished under the heavy burden of dying. There is humor, and outrage, and love that survived the battle with cancer--and survives in this book even when the battle is lost. The previous reviewer, a nameless entity "from Ohio", is wrong, and is obviously a person who knows Mr. Tillman and his journey to write a story that bares that most vulnerable part in all of us; that part that holds our deepest loves and fears we rarely let out to see the light of day, that so few of us could hope to be put in such loving and tender words. It is clearly a perversion of one's deepest humanity that someone hiding behind anonomity could use such a poignant moment in the live of any other to express his own jealousy and anger. And sad that another could use the brillant forum provided by Amazon.com for such a nasty and personal vendetta.
beautifully written and heart-wrenching book.......1999-09-25
Dear readers, I apologize for the bogus review I entered below as "A reader from Ohio." I've been in a jealous rage because of Mr. Tilman's success and let my anger get the best of me. Below is the review that I originally wrote:
David, this was a beautifully written and heart-wrenching book, and I applaud you for your usual excellent writing. I would be happy to be write a short review of this book, and am honored to have been asked.
"Dave Tillman is that rare writer whose work has the power of universality. His In the Failing Light touches a consciousness shared by all, for everyone has experienced the loss of someone beloved. Beautifully-written and bittersweet, the author - as with all his work - reminds us that even when day slips closer to night, and the light fails, life is to be savored and lived to the fullest."
horrible writing -- pass on this or be sorry!.......1999-09-23
Terribly written -- Tillman needs to go back to the day job! Sounds like it was written half asleep on the train -- definitely a waste of time to the reader.
