      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work/life reference guide with exercises.......2000-04-08

This collection of articles and exercises provides "cutting edge" resources in the work/family and work/life areas. The articles cover everything from flextime to recognition of the work and family issues faced by expatriates. This information is becoming more and more important in organizations throughout the world. A glance at the annual Fortune or other magazines that focus on the best companies to work for indicate the attention being focused on these issues. Interestingly new graduates are now asking these questions about the companies they are considering working for--and companies that ignore this may find themselves less able to hire the professionals they need (and the market for these folks continues to get tighter). The guide is expensive, but collecting up the work captured within it would be incredibly time-consuming and the coverage might not be as thorough. Although it is probably intended more for a human resources professional or teacher conducting training or informing employees and managers about work/life issues it could be a useful guide to assess your own ways of balancing and integrating you work and nonwork life. There could be application for a parent or church group to use the guide as well. If you hired a consultant to inform you on these issues and/or a trainer to conduct this training it would cost a lot more and you would have to bring them back again and again. One thing that was not addressed in the guide was what I will call "family friendly backlash" found in books like The Baby Boon, but I think this guide moves beyond this controversy by focusing on work AND life, not just work AND family. It is important to recognize that these are not just issues for people with small children, but issues that impact all working people.

        Book Description

This self-assessment serves to heighten the awareness of the participants about balance in their lives.  The emphasis is on assessing current situations, identifying values and goals, and examining personal objectives.  The activity uses a combination of learning tools to stimulate thought and discussion, including brief lecture, the Family Index of Balance (a simple-to-use, 12-item self-assessment tool), and two facilitated exercises that identify current demands and strategies for handling the stress of these demands.  The Family Index of Balance is the key learning activity; it is here that participants can see for themselves a picture of the current balance–or lack of balance–in their lives.  Contributed by Jane Henderson-Loney.

This new edition of Soil Erosion Research Methods retains the themes and layout of the first edition. However, most chapters have been revised and some additional chapters have been added. There are new chapters on modeling wind and water erosion. Extensive revisions and updating have been done in chapters dealing with assessment of erosivity and erodibility, erosion, crop productivity, measuring sediment yield from river basins and field plot techniques. There is extensive updating of current statistics on the global magnitude of soil erosion by water and wind and on denudation rates. Several new authors have made significant improvements in revising and updating available information.

From the supplier: The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) considers the length-slope factors of the terrain as well as detachment-limiting conditions. The LS equations were derived from expensive analyses of experimental data and rigorous theory for erosion mechanics. The simplified method of estimation of the length-slope factors (LS) is not equivalent to the LS relationships in the RUSLE because the LS factor was a measure of sediment transport capacity and transport-limiting conditions.

From the supplier: Methods currently used to assess the effects of soil erosion on soil properties and crop yields on agricultural land were compared. The methods include topsoil removal and addition, paired comparisons of eroded phases of soils in a field of similar landscape position, yield data analysis for a soil series from various plots in many fields with variable management and in different landscape positions, factor analyses and geostatistics and simulation models. The results show the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the various methods due to the confounding effects of soil formation, landscape position and management.

                              Book Description

The Observer's Handbook is a 288-page guide published annually since 1907 by The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (136 Dupont Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M5R 1V2). Through its long tradition and the expertise of more than 35 contributors, the Observer's Handbook has come to be regarded as the standard North American reference for data on the sky. The material in the Handbook is of interest to professional and amateur astronomers, scientists, teachers at all levels, students, science writers, campers, scout and guide leaders, as well as interested general readers. The Observer's Handbook is an integral part of many astronomy courses at the secondary and university levels, and it should be on the reference shelf of every library.

5 out of 5 stars Concise Astronomical Data.......2002-01-03

This book is an excellent collection of data for 2002, although somewhat sparse in graphics, which are far better in Guy Ottewell's Astronomical Calendar 2002 from the Universal Workshop.... This book is an excellent size for outdoor use, and is a very good value for the price. It is not designed for beginners, but is a complete collection of data for any amateur astronomer...

                                        Description:
The argument that accounting is an interested endeavour, premised on social practices, suggests that an examination of the quantity of corporate social reporting (CSR) in shareholder reports is too simplistic an avenue of exploration. An analysis of web-based financial and CSR reports, using a discourse/textual analytic approach, has raised questions regarding how these issues are given (and denied) prominence in this context by virtue of their physical positioning and persuasive language. In the study, web-based forms of reports of five banking groups are examined, Lloyds/TSB, the Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC, Barclays and the Co-operative Bank. It is argued that, rather than the production of stand-alone reports signalling the growing importance of CSR considerations, in this context they function to peripheralise the information. Although it is evident that organizations are beginning to articulate a stance with regard to CSR, as increasingly more attention is being paid to social and environmental issues, simple articulation is no longer sufficient.

Andrew Kakabade and Mette Morsing discuss what corporate social responsibility (CSR) could be, how to communicate effectively the benefits of CSR initiatives, and how critical it is to have CSR on the corporate agenda--not to do so means CSR remains something "nice to have" rather than making the desired difference to our lives.

                                            Book Description

`Perrini et al provide a detailed, authoritative look at the evolving European perspective on corporate social responsibility. They show how Europe has moved from follower status to leading edge practice. The book is the best current indicator of what the next stages of CSR will look like.'
                                            - Thomas W. Dunfee, University of Pennsylvania, US

The rapidly increasing attention devoted to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has resulted in the term `CSR' being applied to myriad dissimilar phenomena. The authors therefore aim to dispel this confusion by presenting a multi-faceted view of socially responsible corporate behavior and related themes. They provide a conceptualization of CSR that emphasizes the role of the adoption and implementation of specific CSR strategies and their impact on corporate social and economic performance.

An overview of the CSR literature is presented, and the managerial tools required for creating and sustaining social, economic and competitive value are explored. Case studies and extensive empirical evidence are used as a basis for the analyses of the benchmarking of European and international standards and initiatives, and a new CSR performance evaluation and reporting framework is proposed.

Driven by the strong belief that CSR is at the forefront in the competitive strengthening of the entire EU system, this book represents an attempt to guide readers through the CSR principles currently in progress at the European level. It will therefore be invaluable to both academics and practitioners wishing to deepen their knowledge in the field of CSR, and to those interested in the practical application of strategic approaches to CSR.

                                                      Book Description

July 30, 1945: The heavy cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis was sunk by a torpedo. 1,196 men went into the water. When rescue arrived five days later, only 317 remained.

What happened during those five terrible days?

Full of harrowing personal accounts from survivors, and written by a veteran who served aboard the cruiser before the attack, Ordeal by Sea chronicles the stark human drama and sensational aftermath of one of the worst disasters in naval history.

                                                      Customer Reviews:

                                                      3 out of 5 stars A decent retelling of a horrific tale.......2003-03-18

Ordeal by Sea does not feature great writing -- the character portrayals are weak, the suspense is almost non-existent, the narrative rambles. What this book does have in its favor is that it was written twenty years after the sinking of the Indianapolis, while the event was still relatively sharp in the public's mind, and in the survivors' minds as well.

As I've mentioned, the dramatic aspects of this book are weak. These guys were in the Pacific five days with sharks pulling them under the water, and Helms makes it seem almost like a swim meet. Helm was not a great writer, but he does tell this horrifying story reasonably well: the Indianapolis delivers materials for one of the bombs to fall on Japan in the summer of 1945, the ship is sunk by a rogue Japanese sub, the survivors float for five days in shark-infested waters, some injured in the sinking, their bones pushing through flesh, the unfair court-martialing of McVay, the ship's captain. This is one of the best stories of surviving the worst conditions out there.

One caveat: The publisher does not present this as a classic, as an older book brought out again. You find that out in the new introduction. I thought that this was a brand new book when I purchased it. That dings the book's rating.

                                                      Truly a remarkable story, however.

Helm does a good job discribing the sinking of this heavy cruiser
and the five days the survivors spent in the water facing the
hazards of sharks, sun, no food or water, and the negative effects on the crew. With the new forward and summary by the
skipper of the sub Indianapolis, their research and wording was
quick and to the point. The skipper of the cruiser may have
warranted a court martial, but was it fair--probably not. The court martial was more a bow to public pressure and focused on how the Navy was itself to blame for the sinking since no escort
was sent to protect the ship, and nobody noticed the ship missing
at Leyte. Better to throw someone to the dogs, than let the Navy assume blame for the 800 odd deaths at sea.

3 out of 5 stars Leaves Out Some Important Details.......2002-05-29

I've read several books about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and I would rate Ordeal By Sea as only average. Mr. Helm does a good job of explaining the sinking itself, and the story of the survivors in the water is well-done, but some aspects are either complelely left out, or they are barely mentioned. These events, such as McVay's request and subsequent denial of a destroyer escort, failure to alert McVay about the recent sinking of an American destroyer along his proposed route, the ignoring by the navy of an intercepted message from the I-58 stating that she had sunk an American battleship, and the huge mess up regarding the departure and arrival of the Indianapolis are barely touched upon. Also, Mr. Helm devotes only a few pages of text to McVay's court martial procedure. While the book does a good job of telling about the sinking, abandoning, and struggle of the survivors, I was disappointed about the omission of the vital events leading up to the sinking. However, the author of the afterword, William J. Toti, does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed on the recent efforts by the survivors to get McVay's name cleared. I would recommend "In Harm's Way" by Doug Stanton over this book.

5 out of 5 stars It's the best book about the Indianapolis that I've read!.......2002-02-11

if you wanna read a book about the Indiapolis I would recomend this book. It is really good and tell you everything you could need to know. It's awesome! However, if you want to know the back ground about the I-58 or Hashimoto then I would also recomend, Abandon Ship! by Richard F. Newcomb. Enjoy!

Note: just as a sugestion I think that when you underline the important parts of the book you get more out of it.

A compact yet good account of the sinking of a navy ship and the incredible struggle for survival of the remaining crew, left floating in the Pacific ocean for days.

                                                      FULL REVIEW
This is one of many books written about the tragic sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. It is a good version. It is well told and fairly well written. There are parts, however, where you feel the author could have told you more of the story, and other parts where he maybe should have said less. It flows well, though, and fully tells the story while also keeping the reader's attention. This ordeal gives us a great story set in WWII of what it's like to be on a ship that gets hit by multiple torpedoes and then the struggle to get off before it goes down. It shows the many facets of what men will experience and become if left simply floating out in the ocean without food or water for an extended period of time. It is an amazing story that leaves the reader with a true sense of what these men went through, and is well worth reading.

A highly entertaining, humorous, and heartfelt little charmer of a book. An authentically informative, yet down-to-earth, and fun to read collection of stories revolving around the medical/surgical training years of a man, whose warmth, wisdom, and wry humor made it possible for him to not only survive the grueling years of internship and residency, but to thrive and become, one must assume after reading this; a wonderfully gifted doctor and surgeon. It's comforting to know there are people trained by the likes of this man(apparently himself now retired) practicing surgery today! An easy and most enjoyable read that, by the way, also affords a very pleasant stroll down memory lane to anyone who has worked in medicine, or at a hospital, over the years.

This little book takes me back to the way REAL doctors were trained and what they had to endure in the 60's. Wearing ice cream man suits while working 28 out of every 24 hours for pennies an hour. A wonderful literary tour through a doctors training, the good times and bad.
