Book Description
This text introduces students to the process of program evaluation and the experimental and quasi-experimental approaches to evaluation. The book covers approaches to outcome evaluations, measurement, threats to internal validity, performance measurement, and benchmarking. It also introduces the basic experimental and quasi-experimental designs, presents a published article which uses each design, and offers an explanation and critique of how the authors implemented the design. Stand-alone articles invite students to explain and critique on their own.

Talk about performing under pressure! New York City firefighter Michael Stefano describes wrestling with a 2.5-inch-thick high-pressure hose gushing water at over 200 gallons per minute, raising and climbing heavy ladders, operating superpowerful saws, and rappelling down the sides of multistory buildings--all while weighted down with bulky protective equipment, and often while soaking wet ("where there's fire, there's water"). Endurance, strength, and vigor are not only necessary for peak performance--they are lifesavers.
The point of The Firefighter's Workout Book is not to make you a firefighter, but to help you transform your personal physical-fitness level, in a program that takes four hours a week. Stefano explains the basics about exercise and gives guidelines for cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility. Explanations are clear and accurate. He also gives nutritional guidelines for losing fat without sacrificing muscle, but his dietary recommendations are curiously outdated: he relies on the old "four food groups," which have been replaced by the American Dietetic Association's food pyramid.
Thirty-one strength-training exercises are well illustrated with photographs, and each step is clearly explained, with "trainer's notes" giving modifications to increase intensity. Most use dumbbells and barbells, though some use just body weight. Thirteen stretches are also illustrated and described. Stefano gives examples of different routines--full body, split, circuit training, pyramid training, and slow-motion training. Firefighting stories spice up every chapter, giving you a good read as well as a good fitness program. --Joan Price
Book Description
The demands of being a firefighter can be quite high. Firefighters are called upon to perform at peak capacity under the most arduous conditions. Being physically fit can mean the difference between life and death for them or the victims they race to save. New York City fire captain and personal trainer Michael Stefano has come to the rescue with The Firefighter's Workout Book, the thirty-minute-a-day, train-for-life program that's worked for New York City firefighters and will work for you.
The Firefighter's Workout Book covers all aspects of health and fitness, including strength, cardiovascular, and flexibility training. Captain Michael Stefano shows how spending long hours at the gym is unnecessary or even counterproductive. Step-by-step instruction, interspersed with motivational stories based on Stefano's experience as a firefighter, will leave you burning for more.
The workout routines can be tailored to fit individual needs. The illustrated exercise guide features photos of New York City firefighters. You will learn how to stay motivated, set reasonable, attainable goals, and chart your own progress to ensure results. A simple, easy-to-follow nutrition plan is also offered.
The firefighter's workout is a real-life approach to a very common problem: staying in good physical condition with a minimal amount of time and available equipment. With the tools and knowledge provided by The Firefighter's Workout Book, you'll be able to rise above these obstacles to get in the best condition of your life.

Calculate Your Calories.......2007-04-09
This quick read will get you on the road to sculpting any part of your body. There are also great tips to help you keep yourself fit.
Really works!.......2007-01-10
I tried just the pushups the way he describes and I've finally lost that "droop" in my chest!
Plus how to do the equation on how many calories you burn when working out on any excersise you do.
Good advice for those starting out...........2005-12-28
I picked up Mr. Stefano's book shortly after receiving a back injury which sidelined me for several months. As a result, I ended up gaining a few extra pounds which I was eager to be rid of. The book is 8 chapters in under 130 pages, so it's a quick read. The writing style is direct and to the point, and Mr. Stefano throws in stories from his firefighting career to keep things interesting and stress specific points he's trying to make. He addresses topics such as cardio vs. strength training, diet and caloric intake, specific exercises, and staying motivated. The book is directed at beginners, and he gives enough info to be useful, but not enough to overwhelm. I've been working out using the book's techniques for about 90 days now, and in that time I've lost 15 pounds and made noticeable gains in stamina and strength. I think 30 minutes a day is a little optimistic on his part, though. My workouts tend to last closer to an hour, but since I'm achieving measurable results, I don't think that's a bad thing. If you're willing to dedicate a little time and discipline though, you'll find this book to be a worthwhile purchase.
Almost there.......2005-08-06
I recently purchased the book and should say that this is reasonable guide for a regular person - it describes very well all necessary components for keeping yourself fit. I find the book as good for both men and women; in fact, I gave it to my wife to read and she liked it. It is easy to read and is structured well. Being myself in athletics for 10 years up untill 15 years ago, I support the author in his approach that simply pumping muscles will not make you healthy, but requires a good plan and steady execution.
What is missing is more exercises for different muscle groups and graphical presentations for them - "a picture worth a thousand words"...
This is not in any sense a book for bodybuilding, but an overall a good book to keep yourself fit.
Slow, too easy, too boring.......2003-07-20
This video is painfully boring and would not challenge even the newest beginner to exercise. To much boring blather between each series of exercises. Explains at length very simple moves yet demonstrates poor (some time dangerous) form and bad habits. If you are looking for a quick and efficient workout - or worse, a challenging one - run, don't walk, away from this one. I wish I could get my money back!

Customer Reviews:
Well written! Exciting photographs!.......2007-09-19
Linda Hayward's beginning reader gives children a detailed and fascinating look into the day of a fireman and the job that he does dring a 24 hour shift. There are safety inspections, rescue work, checking all the equipment in the firehouse, etc.
The picture word list in the back of the book is an excellent feature, refreshing the reader's knowledge.
Engaging Story - Great Images.......2007-02-20
I haven't met a kid yet who didn't have at least a passing interest in firetrucks and firefighters. This book gives curious children a peak into the "real" life of an every day hero. The vocabulary is just right for beginning readers and the images will keep the attention of younger listeners.
This book also serves as a useful tool to speak to your children about fire safety.
Good for younger kids, too.......2007-02-18
Although these books are intended for young readers, my two-year-old daughter enjoys having them read to her. The language is easy and direct, the connection between words and pictures is very clear, and the short length fits her attention span.
We have about six books from this series, but "A Day in the Life of a Fire Fighter" is her favorite - and she now loves to point out the "Exit" sign and fire extinguisher in any building we visit.
DK books are wonderful.......2003-07-14
My daughter is 4 1/2 and is beginning to read. The DK books are wonderful and she loves them. The pictures are very good (all DK books are excellently illustrated) and the short stories hold her interest. This series is great in that the reading levels are clearly marked on the book cover, so she knows what to look for when at the library or bookstore.
I also appreciate DK because of their quality binding. Unlike so many other children books, DK uses heavy glossy paper-stock.

Book Description
"A first-rate natural history of the entire U.S.-Mexican border area. . . . [The reader] may profit greatly from the author's readable style and his sense of what is environmentally appropriate."--Sierra
" . . . a book to be savored and pondered. . . . a great service to a very special land."--John Tveten, Houston Chronicle
" . . . deeply rewarding reading for those even mildly interested in the environment and the region from the south of the Rio Grande to California's Imperial Valley."--Arizona Highways
Mountains rise like islands from deserts and grasslands along the U.S.-Mexican border. The stunningly varied borderlands offer a laboratory for studying historical trends and ecological cycles, as well as a refuge in which to experience natural history firsthand. In this engaging personal narrative, biologist Fred Gehlbach describes the stability and changes of the past century in the Borderlands' climate, landforms, and natural communities and in its distinctive plants and vertebrates. Historical sketches, maps, and striking photographs richly amplify the text, and a preface updates developments in the region since the book's original publication in 1981.
Customer Reviews:
Natural History of the Border .......2007-01-14
Most nature writing talks entirely too much about spiritual matters for my taste. I prefer a technical, scientific approach citing "hard" observed data rather than "soft" emotional data. Gehlbach suits my tastes. He calculates the density of fish in a pond, lizards in the desert, and measures the impact on vegetation of people walking on trails. But it's not all dry science. There are interesting passages on the adapatable coyote, the less adaptable grizzly bear and wolf, the geographic expansion of the coatimundi and the armadillo, the extinction of ice age mammals, and many other subjects. It's a real feast.
The subject is the Mexican/US borderlands from the Gulf of Mexico to the Colorado River. This is a mostly desert area, but with a number of "sky islands" -- green mountains that rise above the deserts.
Two criticisms of the book. First, some of it is dated -- written as it was in the 1970s. For example, the author talks about the impact of DDT, a pesticide that has been banned for many years. Secondly, he presumes the reader has a pretty fair knowledge of species of plants and animals. When he embarks on a discussion of the trogon for example he doesnt tell you that it's a colorful, sub-tropical bird. He expects you to know that much about it.
This book ranks at the top of my favorite nature writing. It's informative, well written, and covers a lot of subjects relating to the fascinating barren lands along the border.

Customer Reviews:
Explore the Virgin Islands.......2007-07-17
Explore the Virgin Islands is a guide and travel overview for the Virgin Islands, especially the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. This book includes a wide range of information, everything from background knowledge on the island's natural and cultural environment through places to stay while on the various islands to interesting things to do at every stop along the way.
There are seven sections in Explore the Virgin Islands: Introduction; USVI Practicalities; St. Thomas; St. John; St. Croix; The British Virgin Islands; and Traveling Around the BVI. The introduction section contains an overview about the United States Virgin Islands. This detailed information includes land, climate, flora, fauna, history, government, and economy of these islands. A similar section, The British Virgin Islands, describes this same information as pertains to the British Virgin Islands.
The next chapter, USVI Practicalities, contains contacts and general information on transportation, food, accommodations, and potential activities while traveling the United States Virgin Islands. This chapter also includes important information on customs, safety, and environmental conduct. There's even text describing how to get married while in the Virgin Islands.
The rest of the sections in Explore the Virgin Islands focus on particular Virgin Islands. The United States islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix are each given separate sections while the British Virgin Islands are combined into one section. The first portion of each section describes a little about the particular island including the topography and history. After this overview, specific examples of transportation, accommodation, restaurants, shopping, tourist information, services, and sights are depicted in detail. Each entry contains a short paragraph about the establishment including contacts and potential costs. Also provided in each of these sections is ample information, complete with contacts, on what activities are available on each island. Several black and white and colour maps and photographs accompany each section.
Explore the Virgin Islands is a valuable guide for anyone planning on traveling to any of the United States or British Virgin Islands, specifically the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. This key information is provided for easy reference while planning or while traveling. However, this book will also be just as interesting for the armchair traveler as this book contains ample information about the natural environment, history, and culture on these beautiful islands as well as some extremely stunning colour photographs.
Better than Lonely Planet.......2007-01-16
I do quite a bit of traveling and often buy a Lonely Planet guide as a basic reference. Lately, however, I've become somewhat jaded by its formulaic coverage and superficial approach. I'm also skeptical about how they go about choosing which accomodations and restaurants to include in their books.
Pariser's book at first glance looks remarkably like a Lonely Planet guide--the same format and much the same information. However, Pariser puts more of himself into it and the book clearly is a labor of love. Pariser's guide compares to Lonely Planet like a family restaurant to McDonalds.
Guide To Island Paradise.......2006-04-07
Travel through St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and the British Virgin Islands without waiting to board the plane! If you've already visited this region of earthly paradise you are sure to find an abundance of ideas for shopping, local attractions, beaches, historical sites and fascinating fun facts to add to your next island experience. There's even a getting married section for readers who may be dreaming of a beach wedding. This guide not only explains sea life, animal life, plant life and coral reefs it also warns of underwater hazards and cures, offers tips for environmental, undersea and boating conduct and provides island do's and don'ts. Explore the Virgin Islands takes readers beyond the standard travel guide information and encourages them to become adventurous island explorers. I only wish I had read about the "herbivorous" iguana on St. Thomas before seeing the approximately four foot long creature scaling down a tree in front of me at Coki Beach! Review by JoAnna Carey, Author of Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life
Very good guide book.......2006-02-16
I think this is an excellent guidebook. It has the flavor of a Lonely Planet book, without such a complete "backpacker" emphasis. I find it enjoyable to just read. It's very well written, without trying so hard to be cute or flashy. (I recently bought a pile of guidebooks for Florida and they were all a waste of money except the Michelin Green Guide! Leave it to Michelin.)
I find that this book has a wealth of practical and interesting information. Every question I have come up with regarding planning our trip, I have quickly and easily been able to come up with an answer to. It's full of good maps and photos. He tells you when a spot has been overrun by tourists or if the surf is dangerous there. He tells you when to be especially careful about being ripped off as a tourist. There are lots of interesting bits about the local flora and fauna and historical sidebars. It has an extensive index, a bibliography organized by subject, and a glossary of creole words and other island-specific expressions. It was updated last year, so I expect the information to be very accurate. He gives lots of specific restaurants, hotels, etc., with phone numbers and addresses and recommends some. He doesn't give reviews of the businesses generally; but often gives the flavor of the clientele or some other indication of what to expect (prices, etc.) I imagine it would be pretty hard to slam some business in a place this small and still be able to do this kind of work.
This is not a backpacker's guide -- aimed exclusively at the cheapest way to do things. It's a general guide, with all kinds of information. He does tell you how to do it cheap (and tells you where that will be a pain in the rear.) Here's a quote that explains it:
"It's not practical to take a bus [from the airport] because the schedule has been cut way back and the bus does not come to the terminal. If you have strong legs and little luggage [backpackers ...] you may go out to the main road and wait for the VITRAN (around $1, exact change) ... Be sure to ask if it is a, 'dollar bus.' Otherwise, they may try to charge you more."
To me, this delivers exactly what I want to know about the bus system: cut back schedule, doesn't stop at the terminal (!!), long walk to pick it up, precise cost, exact change, how not to get ripped off. Bullseye in my estimation.
I find this guide to be nicely complete, easy to use, and enjoyable to read. Very hard to find this combination of qualities in a guidebook. I haven't yet visited the VI; but I feel well equipped now. I have traveled extensively (years) in Asia, Africa, and Europe, mostly by bicycle. I have seen umpteen guide books (including many "Let's Go" books: virtually useless except for listing cheap transport and cheap accomodations. I remember what "Let's Go Europe" said about the magnificent city of Orleans, "Good place to do your laundry." [!!!! Did they visit the place??].)
This is a good guidebook.
A Guidebook with a Point of View.......2006-01-28
I have visited the Virgin Islands many times, and always with great delight. This book has shown me many things I didn't know, and will definitely be in my suitcase next time.
The discussions of flora and fauna in the beginning are exceptional, but this book has far more to offer. The discussion of places to eat and to stay is much more thorough than that in most other guides, and includes places I wouldn't want to miss. The discussion of activities and sites includes things I haven't seen in any other guide, and approaches I haven't found discussed elsewhere.
The dramatic cover and the charming photographs inside also help to convey the mood and beauty of the islands. Add this to the author's willingness to reveal his opinions and preferences, and you have the kind of unique and charming guide that is a rare find.

Book Description
For readers of the New York Times bestselling Gossip Girl and A-List series, here is a smart and highly commercial first novel about four best friends who, after graduating high school, decide to postpone the standard college route to pursue their creative dreams. Harper Waddle, Sophie Bushell, and Kate Foster are about to commit the ultimate suburban sin--bailing on college to each pursue their dreams: write the next Great American Novel, make it as a Hollywood actress, and backpack around the world. Middlebury-bound Becca Winsberg is convinced her friends have gone insane...until they remind her she just might have a dream of her own. So what if their lives are bass ackwards and belly up? They'll always have each other. Harper is going to be the next Jane Austen.Or Sylvia Plath.Or Plum Sykes.Figuring out which should be easy. It?s living with the lie she told her three best friends that?s going to be hard.Kate doesn?t know exactly what she wants. But whatever it is, she won?t find it at Harvard.Maybe the answer is in Paris, or Athens? or anywhere Kate can be someone besides the girl with perfect grades, perfect hair, and the perfect boyfriend.Sophie is a star. She?s already got the looks, the talent, and a list of demands for her dressing room. Now that she?s wrangled a furnished guesthouse in Beverly Hills, it?s only a matter of time before she?s discovered.Unless she isn?t.Becca is dysfunctional. At least, her family is.Which is why she can?t wait to flee the drama and get to college. But Becca?s friends know she needs more than a spot on the Middlebury ski team and a cozy dorm room. They know she needs to fall in love.Dreams are complicated. They almost never turn out like you imagine?they almost always change. Sometimes, they change you.

Bass Ackwards and Belly Up.......2007-05-07
It is the time for their lives to truly take flight. Best friends Harper, Kate, Becca and Sophie have graduated high school and are going to separate colleges to pursue their separate careers. But to Harper's disappointment, her future is crushed when she received the rejection letter from NYU and rather than tell her friends the truth, she decides to spend the year writing America's next Little Women. Although her gambling journey was not to be taken alone, for Harper inspired both Kate and Sophie to chase their dreams as well. Sophie blindly stumbles into Hollywood in search of the perfect audition that will propel her into the movie business, but instead finds love with the wrong actor. Leaving home with only a passport and an open road, Kate bails out of Harvard to explore the world and its broad opportunity where she hopes her dream is hidden. The only one to stick to her plan, Becca hits the ski slopes on the Middlebury team content with the only thing she feels good at, which keeps her company when her friends are far. Love comes to each girl that year and with it decisions that could change their lives, and though apart, the four friends manage to find ways to hold each other close. Bass Ackwards and Belly Up, by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fein, is a heartfelt novel that defines the love that is intertwined in the friendship of four girls who experience their first steps into the real world.
Bass Ackwards and Belly Up is made up of the four stories of the four friends Becca, Harper, Sophie and Kate. The tales of each of their separate lives makes the book a more intriguing read, one that's difficult to put down. From each girl, the reader can sometimes relate and because there are separate stories, it is easier to compare with.
Thorough the hard times, together or apart, the authors do a great job of defining each character by their experiences. For instance, when Kate is robbed and Harper finishes the first fifty pages of her book, each girl is changed and reacts a different way to the events. The characters are very well developed and it makes the story much easier to imagine.
Bass Ackwards and Belly Up focuses on each friend's dream, whatever that dream may be. In this way, it gives teens the incentive to chase their dreams, but still to think out what this change may hold for their futures. Through this story, the authors send a great message for teens that shows you can accomplish whatever you wish if you just give it a try.
This story of four friends and their adventures as young adults is an incredible story of love, determination and the freedom to make your own choices with the burden of the consequences. I highly recommend Bass Ackwards and Belly Up to teenage girls and young adults for I highly enjoyed it myself.

wonderful coming-of-age tale.......2007-02-09
Best friends Harper, Sophie, Becca, and Kate have done everything together since elementary school. Now they've graduated, and are about to go off to college. True, they're all going to different schools, in different cities, but they're still all having the same experiences, just in different locations. Then, the night before Becca is supposed to leave for Middlebury, Harper drops a bomb. Instead of heading off to Manhattan, she's going to be staying at home in her parents basement and writing the next Great American Novel. In other words, following her Dream. Sophie and Kate quickly hop on board the "Dream Train," as they call it, going to L.A. and Europe, respectively. For Becca, joining the Middlebury ski team is her dream, but her friends tell her she should work on expanding her horizons by falling in love. As the girls' powerful stories alternate throughout the novel, you will be rooting for all of them to accomplish their dreams. True, there are obstacles: a bitter ski coach, skeezy guys, and writer's block, to name a few. But this Dream Train is full speed ahead, and it doesn't stop for anything or anyone.
Four Square.......2007-01-18
Despite their vastly different personalities and families, Harper, Sophie, Becca, and Kate have been best friends for years. No matter what, they tell each other everything.
Well, almost everything. Harper was rejected from NYU, the only college to which she applied, and has been keeping this a secret from her friends and her parents for months. Right before her friends plan to take off for colleges all over the country, the truth comes out.
Well, kind of. Harper acts as though she has decided not to go to NYU, preferring to stay home and write the next Great American Novel. She thinks this quasi-admission will shock her friends, but their reactions shock her even more: two of them decide to follow her example and take a year off from college to chase their own capital-D Dreams.
From there on, the story follows each girl in turn. Each storyline is given equal time and attention, switching back and forth every few pages. This format will be familiar to fans of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Sophie wants to be a famous actress. As luck would have it, her mom's old friend lives with her husband in Beverly Hills and allows Sophie to stay at the guesthouse rent-free. Sophie's landlords are quite busy and have good connections, giving her total freedom and helping her snag some auditions. Sophie befriends Sam, an aspiring actor who takes care of the pool and does odd jobs around the place, and Trey, a famous actor who gets her a line in a movie and steals her heart. If you like Sophie's storyline, read The 310 series by Beth Killian.
Kate's post-high-school plans were supposed to be set in stone: Go to Harvard with her long-time boyfriend, study hard and get good grades in an effort to live up to her parents' high expectations. Harper's big plan makes Kate realize she has no plan of her own. Europe calls out to her, so she books a plane ticket and packs her bags. As her boyfriend drops her off at the airport, he breaks up with her. She heads off to her big trip feeling more alone than ever. While she travels, she attempts to work her way through a list of 100 tasks ("Touch the Berlin Wall," "Take the water," "Stomp grapes") created by her friends and her younger adopted sister Habiba. If you like Kate's story, read 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson.
Becca heads off to Middlebury as planned, wanting to wow the school's coach with her skiing ability. He coached an Olympic team and she wants to impress him more than anything. She ends up getting on his bad side during the first practice and staying there for quite some time. Not only that, but small pratfalls evolve into bigger disasters, snowballing into something she never could have seen coming. Somewhere along the way, she manages to do the one thing her friends challenged her to do: fall in love. If you like Becca's story, read the Love Bukowski series by Emily Franklin.
Meanwhile, Harper finds herself staring at a blank computer screen. Now living in her parents' basement and told that she must pay rent, she takes a job at a local coffeehouse. An old classmate, Judd, becomes an unlikely friend. The twenty-three-year-old English teacher she crushed on in high school becomes a regular customer - and maybe something more. Now if she could only manage to actually write something . . . If you like Harper's story, read That Summer by Sarah Dessen.
The book covers three months in the lives of four teenage girls. As any teenager can tell you, that is both a very short and a very long period of time. During those three months, the characters are each granted a new kind of independence, but manage to come back together. If only all friendships were truly this strong, and we were all afforded the freedom (and, for the most part, incredibly good luck and easy resolutions) these girls were given.
Read this book!.......2006-11-04
I loved this book so much. My mom bought it for me so that I would have something to do on the plane ride to Germany and I wouldn't stop reading until I was finish! The book really reminded me of my life and my friends and how life can throw turns for the better or the worse.

Harper Waddle, Sophie Bush, Kate Foster, and Becca Winsberg, four best friends who bonded in middle school during a fateful trip to the bathroom, have reached a pivotal moment in their lives. The summer after their high school graduation leaves them ready to pursue their much anticipated futures; Becca, a spot on the much coveted Middlebury college ski team; Harper, an acceptance into her dream school, NYU; Kate, a future at Harvard with her beloved boyfriend; and poor Sophie, stuck at home attending community college. Unfortunately, none of their plans really coincide with each other.
Harper, however, is living with a big secret. One so big that it causes her to ditch her college plans in pursuit of her "dream." This act of liberation starts a whirlwind of commotion during the last few days of the girls' summer, and by the start of the new school year, only Becca has stayed true to her original plans. Fueled with ambition, daring Sophie leaves their small town of Boulder in hope of hitting it big in Los Angeles, impeccable Kate forsakes Harvard for Europe, and Harper is determined to write the next "Great American Novel."
Now separated by state lines and oceans, and linked only by letters, lists, and the occasional telephone call, Harper, Sophie, Kate, and Becca are left to discover what growing up is all about. Characteristic of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants / Second Summer of the Sisterhood / Girls in Pants (3 Book Set) trilogy,
BASS ACKWARDS AND BELLY UP is a humorous tale about the path to maturity, narrated from each girl's own particularl journey, and illustrates the sometimes haphazard route one follows in pursuit of a dream.
