Book Description
Written in a folksy, down-to-earth style, this user-friendly guide to the night sky is designed for beginner and intermediate stargazers ages twelve and up. It begins with chapters explaining the stars, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies—and what readers can expect to see from their own backyards with a modicum of equipment. Colorado StarWatch then examines the major constellations, offering updated tales of the mythology surrounding them and detailing their seasonal movement in the sky. Later chapters delve into the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, planets, and "celestial extras" such as comets, meteor showers, and aurora borealis. The final chapter provides advice on purchasing a telescope and other stargazing equipment. Appendices include monthly star maps for Colorado’s northern (40%) latitude, a local resource guide, and a list of Colorado’s brightest stars.

Customer Reviews:
Aimed at Interesting the Younger Reader.......2007-03-22
OK, so I don't live in Southern California. But I live in the state just east of Californis, and this was the closest book I could get. I bought it for a youngster that's just beginning to show interest in astronomy. She's twelve and sitting out one evening and having her identify various stars to her mother and I was nothing less than fantastic. And this from a kid with less than stellar (sorry I couldn't resist) grades in school. You've just got to find something that interests them. I guess that come Christmas time I'm going to be in the market for a telescope.
The book was exactly what I was seeking. It's aimed at the younger reader so that the descriptions are not too complex, not too mathematical -- that can come later. It's personalized, if that's the word, to the local states (and the same author has other versions of the book for other states).

Book Description
Neophyte sky watchers who try to use standard, often complex astronomical charts and maps can often end up confused and frustrated. This beautifully illustrated volume makes identifying heavenly objects easy. All viewers need to supplement this book when they go starwatching is a simple red-lens flashlight and a small telescope. If unavailable, a pair of binoculars, or even the naked eye will do. Guided by Starwatch, readers can observe the sky month-by-month as it completes its annual cycle. The author shows how to locate such constellations as Ursa Major (the Big Dipper), Orion, Gemini, Pegasus, and many others. He also points out the major stars in each constellation, noting fascinating facts about many of them. For instance, Orion's main star, Betelgeuse, is approximately 250 times bigger than our own Suna comparison parallel to the difference between a marble and a beach ball. He also tells how to find the planets in the night sky, see Jupiter's moons with ordinary binoculars, and even how to find those deep-space objects called nebulae on clear dark nights. Facts and illustrations fill every page of this fascinating book, which is divided into separate chapters for every month of the year. It's an exciting introduction to astronomy for both kids and adults, and it features more than 300 vivid color illustrations.

You won’t find a more enthusiastic guide to the night sky than Mike Lynch and you won’t find a better guidebook to our night sky than "Mike Lynch’s Minnesota Star Watch".
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful coffee table book........2004-12-14
Mike Lynch is an advanced amateur astronomer, but more than that he is a radio personality and writer of a weekly astronomy column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, these writing/communications skills have enabled him to write this gorgeous book on astronomy for amateurs. In recent years the advances in astronomy have given to us a most amazing set of pictures. Some come from the Hubble orbiting observatory, some from new huge ground based telescopes. These images have been digitally enhanced and colorized to provide images that only a few years ago were simply impossible to obtain. Mr. Lynch has collected a number of these to illustrate the points he is discussing.
This book is a general introduction to every aspect of astronomy from the thinking of the ancients making up stories about the constellations, to the recent research on the planets such as photographs of the surface of Mars taken from probes actually on the surface.
Oh that Galileo could see this book. Remember that he was put under house arrest for suggesting that moons went around Jupiter rather than everything in the heavens going around Earth and we humans.
This is a delightful coffee table book. And it isn't just for Minnesota. The universe doesn't revolve around Minnesota any more than it does Earth.

Fluid narratives and scientific passion.......2001-01-05
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my father-in-law, who very conscientiously purchased the book from a locally-owned, independent bookseller. What a delightful book it is! My husband and I read it together, and we very much enjoyed every page. Bowers writes beautifully, fluidly and with wonderfully astute scientific insight. It is always a pleasure to read the writings of a scientist so inspired by her work that she shares her passion with laypeople; scientific passion is nothing less than infectious, regardless of the discipline. Bowers' essays are accessible, insightful prose that leave the reader hungry for more. A pure delight to read.

Description:
In recent years, use of environmentally friendly and biodegradable natural insecticides of plant origin have received renewed attention as agents for disease vector control. Methanol extracts of leaves from the Indian white cedar Dysoxylum malabaricum Bedd. (Meliaceae) were tested against mature and immature Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera) mosquitoes under laboratory conditions. The extract showed strong larvicidal, pupicidal, adulticidal, and antiovipositional activity. The maximum leaf extract concentration tested in this study was 4%, which produced pronounced effects. In general, first and second instars were more susceptible to leaf extract than older insects. Clear dose-response relationships were established, with the highest dose of 4% plant extract causing 97% mortality of first instars.

Description:
Larvae of moths in the genus Hypsipyla are specialist feeders on trees in the Swietenioideae sub-family of Meliaceae. It has been suggested that there is a pattern of preference for endemic hosts such that the Asian Hypsipyla robusta damages Asian swietenioid host species, but avoids American and African species in the same sub-family. However, this claim has never been tested in well replicated multi-species field trials. In this study we consider five swietenioid tree species: Toona ciliata and Chukrasia tabularis from the Asian/Australian region, Swietenia macrophylla and Cedrela odorata from tropical America and Khaya senegalensis from Africa. These species were included in trials planted in four widely dispersed sites in the Asian/Australian region (Thailand, Laos PDR, the Philippines and Australia). We found that all five tree species were attacked by H. robusta. The ''preference for endemic hosts'' hypothesis was however, supported in two ways. Firstly, T. ciliata, the only species endemic to the regions of all four field sites, was always more frequently attacked than the American and African species. Secondly, we observed that C. tabularis was frequently damaged in trials within the tree's native range (Thailand and Laos) and relatively less damaged when growing outside of its native range (the Philippines and Australia) reflecting geographic variation in the host use pattern of H. robusta.

Description:
Herbivore damage is expected to reduce plant growth. The plant vigour hypothesis suggests, however, that many herbivores are attracted to fast growing plants. If these two opposing forces occur, what is the expected relationship between plant size and herbivore damage? We ask this question by focusing on variation in Toona ciliata, a tree that suffers chronic infestation by the shoot-boring moth Hypsipyla robusta. Considering trees between 6 and 36 months old, the dominant pattern was a positive relationship between tree height and the frequency of damage received. This pattern in cumulative damage is explained by the incidence of fresh damage recorded in each survey, which was positively associated with tree height. By controlling for this attractive effect of plant height it was also possible to detect a transient negative impact of damage on plant growth: trees with current H. robusta damage experienced smaller increases in height than those without damage. When plant vigour and attractiveness to key herbivores are strongly linked evolution of plant defences will be inextricably entwined with whole plant architecture and growth strategies.
