Book Description
Although accounting has been called the language of business, misunderstandings and misrepresentations can occur when financial statement data is communicated between countries that use differing accounting standards and methods. Currently, there is no system for presenting corporate financial data in a standardized format. Accountants, tax specialists and investment analysts are forced to rely on the systems they have developed for creating "comparable data" when evaluating international corporate financial information. The title and concept are unique. Kim/Global assumes that the certified financial statements of included corporations contain the useful and reliable financial information that puts investors, creditors and others in a position to make sound business decisions. In order to standardize this data, it applies fundamental analysis to the financial reports of a representative number of corporations doing business worldwide.

Book Description
Service is THE business buzzword of the '90s, and this savvy guide presents the service secrets of the best of the best in every line of work, from what motivates them to how they provide the ultimate in customer service. These are the real heroes of business -- the front line workers who raise service to the level of performing art.
Customer Reviews:
A good book to read if you are a service manager or provider.......1997-03-02
The real heroes of business and not a CEO among them is meant for readers who want to know "how to find, train, manage and retain world-class service workers." It is also for readers who want become world-class service workers. This book is about "the people who answer the phones and wait table, who open doors and give directions , who load planes and serve drinks, who fix cars and stack apples, who sell recliners and cash register tapes, who clean drains and fix telephones, who make bank loans and manage frontline workers." The stories of each of these individuals is of value to those of us providing service to our customers.
The authors "set out to find some of the best frontline service workers in America, and write a book explaining what made them special, what motivated and satisfied them. We also wanted their insight about how bosses could create a working environment in which high standards would be the norm, in which customers would be treated like a blessing instead of an inconvenience, in which creativity, innovation, and, not incidentally, profits would flourish."
Bill Fromm is the author of The Ten Commandments of Business and How to Break Them. He is also the founder and president of Barkley & Evergreen, a national marketing and advertising agency based in Kansas City. Leonard Schlesinger is a professor at Harvard Business School. He served as vice president and chief operating officer of Au Bon Pain, a chain of French bakery cafés.
I suggest that this will be of interest to service providers, internal support to service providers, and those hiring service providers. The definition of service provider here includes sales, tele sales, sales service, technical service, customer service, and others that come in contact with customer.
The authors searched Fortune magazines top 500 service providers plus over 300 additional companies from the national's finest service providers. This provided a list of several hundred nominations that were first reduced to about forty candidates, then reduced further before being contacted by a "mystery shopper." The result was the fourteen individuals discussed in the book.
Each of the fourteen chapters tells us about an individual and explains why they were selected. During the chapter the authors include inserts explaining the relevance of the preceding information about the individual. The final paragraphs of each chapter provide tools for defining the value of the individual (what does their service excellence mean in dollars to the organization) and how to find more of them (what do you ask or look for?).
After the fourteen chapters that discuss the individual service providers there is a conclusion about "the care and feeding of the real heroes of business." This is followed by an appendix with twenty questions to help you find world-class service workers and another to help determine their worth to the organization

Book Description
In response to concerns about animal welfare, food assurance schemes are now incorporating standards for animal welfare. This is particularly important in the poultry industry, where much attention has focused on the welfare of broilers (meat birds). However, there is as a result a greater need for scientifically-based methods for the measurement and auditing of welfare. This book brings together papers by international experts from the academic, professional and industrial sectors. It examines practical ways of measuring and auditing broiler welfare on-farm, during transit and pre-slaughter. Related marketing issues and future developments such as automation, are also discussed.

Book Description
This book serves two purposes. The authors present important aspects of modern research on the mathematical structure of Einstein's field equations and they show how to extract their physical content from them by mathematically exact methods. The essays are devoted to exact solutions and to the Cauchy problem of the field equations as well as to post-Newtonian approximations that have direct physical implications. Further topics concern quantum gravity and optics in gravitational fields.
The book addresses researchers in relativity and differential geometry but can also be used as additional reading material for graduate students.

Book Description
The Ragged Mountain Portable Wilderness Anthology is designed to ride in the pack, to accompany adventurers with the encouragement of other adventurers, to harmonize the contemplation of wild places with the echoes of other wild places. The voices range from ancient to contemporary, but most are North American, and the places of which they speak as strangely familiar as the geography of the soul. The mediations of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Robert Service, James Fenimore Cooper, Joseph Conrad, John Muir, Aldo Leopold, John James Audubon, Jack London, Theodore Roosevelt, and many other voices from North American frontiers are here. Native American voices plead for the preservation of what the Europeans called the New World. And some of the best contemporary scribes of the natural world inform our senses and challenge us to look beneath the surfaces of stream, mountain, forest, and desert for deeper meanings.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful companion for the solo camper!.......2006-09-03
Solo camping, by its very nature, attracts the type of person who is contemplative in nature and is comfortable with themselves and the solitude that solo camping engenders. Sadly that contemplative nature is frequently frustrated. While we are awed by nature's grandeur, its simplicity and its events, we are frequently unable to put those thoughts into prose that express the emotions even to ourselves.
Enter "The Ragged Mountain Portable Wilderness Anthology", a compendium of pithy, soothing, exciting and lucid essays by some of the finest nature writers that have ever lived - RM Patterson, Aldo Leopold, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Edward Abbey and Sigurd Olson, to name only a few.
A great lightweight companion for someone who's probably exquisitely aware of every ounce on their back and an entertaining after dinner luxury item for whiling away that campfire time before you curl up into the sleeping bag for the night!
And, you might consider giving a copy to a friend who just doesn't understand why you like being "out there"!

"Competitive running gives your running life a focus. Competition measures progress. You set a goal and accomplish it." Bob Glover and Shelly-lynn Florence Glover, authors of The Competitive Runner's Handbook, know what they're talking about. Bob has run competitively for nearly 40 years, coached for 30 years, and completed more than 30 marathons, while Shelly-lynn has raced for more than 20 years and is an exercise physiologist with a master's degree from Columbia University. They've coauthored several books on running. Clocking in at over 600 pages, The Handbook covers basic training techniques, gives tips on speed training, and outlines regimens for specific races: short, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon. There are also sections on motivation and the mental aspects of competitive running, proper running form, nutrition, dealing with illness and injury, and more. In addition, the book includes many helpful charts. Straightforward and authoritative, this is a comprehensive reference guide that's suited to runners of all levels. --Andy Boynton
Book Description
For both runners entering that first neighborhood race and elite marathoners, trainers Bob and Shelly-lynn Florence Glover's completely revised guide is the book on training to compete. A book that's already sold close to 200,000 copies, The Competitive Runner's Handbook will now offer all the latest information needed to design basic training programs; special workouts to increase strength, endurance, and power; schedules and worksheets to develop individual goals; and specifics on preparing for all kinds of races--with an emphasis on the 10K and the marathon.
Informed by their over thirty years of coaching experience, the Glovers give winning tips on alternative training, footwear and diet, and common injuries and illnesses, as well as sensible advice on balancing running with work and home life.
Customer Reviews:
Very thorough but a little dated.......2007-10-03
When I bought this book I was just starting to run longer distances and hadn't been in any races, so I wasn't the target audience. If you are like me. you'll be a little unsure what your 10K pace is, for example, because you may never have run one. But if you think you're going to be in races and care about your time, I would suggest that this book is worth buying and reading even if those are still in your future.
The book is also kind of old-fashioned, based on what I've picked up elsewhere. It focuses on total weekly mileage more than seems to be in fashion these days, for example, and that approach may not work for those like me who are getting into this at an older age (I'm 46). It also talks about calling race organizers on the phone rather than looking at the race's website, which seems kind of quaint in 2007.
What's really good about it is that it covers so much. It gave me a lot of good tips for little things to remember before my first race (the San Francisco Half Marathon). It gives guidance for many different lengths of races. It talks about injuries and other issues that may come up. It even talks about balancing running with the rest of your life.
With a good update this would be a 5 star book, and even as it is, it's well worth your time.
Wonderful book for a novice.......2007-07-26
I absolutely loved this book. After reading it I felt that I was far more prepared to both physically and mentally take on a marathon. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is starting to run and wants to get ready for any length of race.
Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide, you should look elsewhere for information on nutrition or lifting. But if you are looking for a solid running guide, this is the right book for.
Great book for running any distance.......2007-06-22
This book is great. It has lots of details on training, physiology, diet, recovery, pacing, and everything else you can think of pertaining to running. The charts show you if you finished a race at one distance, how that translates into times for other distances, which is very helpful. This book doesn't give a bunch of feel-good you-can-do-it rah-rah, it gives detailed, specific information on how to run faster, how to run longer, how to run if undertrained, etc, etc. I highly recommend it.
Best book for compettive running.......2007-06-01
Very informative book w/ great programs for all races and all levels.
Improve Your Times.......2007-04-09
Find out how to improve your times on distance running with this helpful book. Various alternatives also account for difference in individuals.

Book Description
Dorry is unbearably lonely at her new high school until she meets Angela and her circle of friends. She soon discovers they all belong to a religious group, the Fishers of Men. At first, as Dorry becomes involved with the Fishers, she is eager to fit in and flattered by her new friends' attention.
But the Fishers make harsh demands of their members, and Dorry must make greater and greater sacrifices. In demonstrating her devotion, Dorry finds herself compromising her grades, her job, and even her family's love. How much is too much? And where will the cult's demands end?
Customer Reviews:
Sucked into a Cult.......2007-03-27
It has been hard for Dorry to adjust to her new town. Her old town was tiny, with a small high school and a group of friends she had known her entire life. She felt safe there, even though her parents told her she was a mistake and they hadn't intended to have her twenty years after her brother and sister. In this new place, Dorry is attending a much bigger school with more students, none of whom are very friendly toward her. She and her parents have to live in a tiny apartment in a bad part of town, because they haven't been abe to sell or rent their old home.
After many days of eating lunch alone and feeling miserable, a pretty and popular girl comes over and invites Dorry to eat lunch with her and her friends. Dorry is overwhelmed that this girl would seek her out, and she is thrilled by the attention her new friends lavish on her. Little by little they tell her about their church, and she begins to attend parties and other gatherings with them.
At first the church seems like a lot of fun. The parties are good, and Dorry goes to an unbelievable retreat with some other church people, where they have fun and also some serious discussion about religion. Dorry agrees to be baptized and to become a member of the church.
Once inside, though, things change. Dorry is assigned a mentor who gives her difficult commands to live up to. She constantly feels guilt and resentful, and likes the church less and less. Is it a dangerous organization? Or is Dorry simply not holy enough to get the full effect of the church?
This is a fascinating look at the way a cult operates. It was much scarier than I would have thought, and this book made me see why people would join cults and then stay with them. I liked how Dorry didn't totally reverse her beliefs at the end of the book; she allowed them to evolve into something that made sense for her.
I hated the way Dorry's parents first totally ignored her, then didn't do anything that might have helped her once they saw that something was wrong. I also kept thinking that Dorry should have been able to see how mean Angela was and should have known that she didn't deserve that type of treatment. I suppose that would have eliminated Dorry's feeling of being trapped in the cult, though.
To catch a fish.......2007-02-19
One thing I love about Margaret Peterson Haddix's books is that she never preaches or talks down to her audience, but still gets her worldview across in a straightforward and non-annoying way. Her characters are not perfect, they are all real human beings and therefore not all of the "good" characters are Christians. She knows how to write a good, honest story without preaching.
Never in her work is this more evident than in Leaving Fishers, possibly my favorite of her books. Dorry, lonely and miserable in her new home, gets taken in by the Fishers, a religious cult that has taken basic Christian doctrines waaaay too far and purports to give eternal answers if only its members give up free will, free thought, their ability to question, and everything else that makes them human. It is honestly scary to read the parts about Dorry's "Fisher parties", because the casualness is so forced, everyone is so intent on "hooking" a new Fisher, and the whole feel is so demonically creepy that it seems every Fisher is nothing more than a robot who was tricked into working for Satan by systematically and coldly trying to work for God.
As the title gives away, Dorry eventually leaves Fishers, and makes some decisions about religion for herself. But that's the beauty of this book: She never says "the sinner's prayer" and "gets right with God". Not yet, anyway. Haddix's point doesn't seem to be, "If you're involved in a cult, get out and then accept Jesus." Nothing's wrong with doing that -- unless you are told to do it and pressured into doing it. How is it any better to become a true Christian because of pressure than it is to become a member of a cult like Fishers because of that same pressure? Haddix seems to be saying that you should never let others think for you, which I agree with, and by making Dorry unsure about any religion after escaping Fishers everything is just more realistic. I did like, though, her response to Zachary in the end, that Fishers was evil but religion wasn't, necessarily.
This book shows the danger of people beginning to place more importance on "chalking one up for God" and then quickly indoctrinating them without caring about them anymore, than on honestly just wanting to share the truth of what they have experienced with someone else, in the hope that they might want to try it too. When people begin to place the most importance on the first, what once seemed to be a simple Christian outreach becomes decidedly more sinister.
Rating: Very Good
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-16
This book was truly phenomenal! This is one of those books that you can't put down and can't wait to see what happens next! No matter what religion you are, I think that you can really enjoy this and can fully appreciate the meaning of it.
Dorry is a character that you want to be happy, because in the beginning of the book she isn't! She is a new student at her school because her dad's factory closed down and they had to move so he could get a new job. For the first few weeks of school she is forced to eat by herself and has no one to talk to. But then Angela comes along.
She tells Dorry to come eat lunch with her and her friends. Dorry is then happy. Until she finds out who they really are. Angela and all of her friends are part of a religious group called The Fishers Of Men. Dorry goes to one of their "parties" and really loves it, until she really gets into it. The Fishers Of Men are a cult. Dorry gets so caught up in what she is doing for "church" that her grades drop, she gets only two or three hours of sleep each night, and her parents really begin to worry about her.
How far will she go to please this very demanding cult? Where will it end?
Reviewed by: Taylor Rector
LEAVE This Book for Another Day.......2006-02-16
`Angela's clear voice asked behind her, "Do you trust us?" "Yes," Dorry mumbled. "Are you willing to stake your life to prove it?" "Yes," Dorry mumbled again.'
Realistic fiction novel "Leaving Fishers", written by Margaret Peterson Haddix is about a lonely new girl, Dorry, who finds a group of friends and instantly takes a liking to them. She later finds out that her friends belong to the religious group, Fishers of Men. Because of her lack of friendship without her new, small group at school, she reluctantly joins Fishers.
Soon her friends begin to change for the worse; this cult engulfs her life as well as her.
This book made me hate Dorry's friend Angela and Dorry herself. I wanted to stick my hand through the pages and punch people's lights out. I started out liking Angela for taking Dorry in, but once she started asking Dorry to do nearly impossible tasks, my impression of her changed. Despite these faults, the plot was still interesting and extremely captivating. I enjoyed being held hostage in the uncertainty of what she was willing to risk.
This book was told in 3rd person point of view, but I would've preferred it in 1st person so that you could figure out what was going on in Dorry's head. The plot and writing style of "Leaving Fishers" was totally different for Margaret.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a suspense-filled story. But, I suggest one of Margaret's better, classic tales, such as "Running Out of Time", or the Shadow Children series. "Leaving Fishers" is a good book, but don't take time out of your busy schedule to wrap your mind around it.
Leaving Fishers.......2006-02-15
Leaving Fishers by Margaret Peterson Haddix is about an eleventh grade girl named Dorry that feels unbelievably lonely at her new school after moving from a small town like Bryden, Ohio to a large city in Indianapolis. That is, until one day, a girl named Angela invites her to sit with her and her friends. Dorry soon discovers that Angela and her friends are part of a religious group called the Fishers of Men. Overjoyed by her new friends and their compliments toward her, Dorry tries to spend as much time with them as possible. She attends religious services, and parties and in doing so, decides to join their group. Little does she know of their high expectations and their strict beliefs. Dorry finds herself caught up in a twist as she tries to keep herself balanced between Fishers and the life she had before. Will Dorry ever be able to keep up with the Fisher's demand?
I highly recommend this realistic fiction book to mature kids who can relate to Dorry's feelings and can handle strong religious content. After all, it was extremely enjoyable and it would be a bummer for someone to put it down because they weren't ready.
