        Book Description

"Kolb and Bartunek's Hidden Conflict in Organizations picks up where earlier works left off. . . . They provide some much-needed conceptual elaboration and empirical detail--elaboration and detail that earlier contextualist perspectives have not provided. . . . Despite being an edited volume, this book is surprisingly well focused and delicious to consume. . . . In directing our attention to the usual darkened and easily overlooked corners of organizational strife, this book provides a particularly compelling documentation of the social contextualist thesis. By documenting how minimal most organizational actors' awareness of context is, coupled with active processes of denial, avoidance, and discounting, this book reminds us just how important it is to attend occasionally to the perceptual ground within which a figure is embedded. . . . The book does a beautiful job at articulating the importance of social context." --Negotiation Journal "What a timely and much needed volume for the field of conflict research! We believe wholeheartedly in the book's continuous theme about there being a 'hidden' side to conflict--a side which we feel is hidden to scholars, not to disputants or even practitioners. . . . The volume's contributors clearly illustrate that unexplored gaps exist between the 'conflict' studied by scholars and the multifaceted experience of those knee-deep in organizational conflict. . . . The reward for this focus is a richer and more dynamic picture of the experiences and functions of conflict in the organization. . . . This volume will and, indeed, should make us more aware of our own ways of constructing other's disputes and, hence, the field's current theories and prescriptions and proscriptions. This work will really have its impact when it significantly transforms our ways of studying and understanding conflict and eventually leads us to develop innovative and more effective ways for people to deal with (resolve or stimulate) their disputes in the workplace. We thank the editors and the authors for a wonderful beginning." --Journal of Organizational Behavior "Necessary reading for anyone interested in a comprehensive understanding of conflict theory. The dominant strength of this book is that it looks beyond the sometimes fraudulently tidy constructs of conflict theory to the messy and often irrational nature of social intercourse. . . . The succinct recapitulation of organizational theory that is relevant to conflict studies, and the extensive notes and bibliographical references in the book give the reader quick and effective access to the conflict resolution literature. The case-study approach makes the book attractive as supplementary reading." --Canadian Journal of Communication "Scholarly works that invite--or force--critical reexamination of assumptive frameworks are especially valuable. Hidden Conflict in Organizations is such a work. . . . The authors of the present volume go beyond early contributions, however, by providing much needed conceptual elaboration and empirical detail regarding precisely how conflicts remain hidden in organizations and the consequences of such 'hiddenness.'. . . The conceptual contributions made by these diverse individual efforts become most obvious when they are viewed against the backdrop of mainstream conflict theory and research. . . . Hidden Conflict does a service by reminding us also of the many ways in which conflict is embedded in larger, more complex social contexts and cultures. . . . This is the kind of book that reminds you of the pleasures of subtlety and that prompts a more nuanced understanding of a phenomenon. Good scholarly works, like good poetry, often bring to light lacunae. They allow one to feel the textures and contours of a landscape that often escape the eye. This is such a book." --The Academy of Management Review "The book represents a thoughtful collection of recent research and provocative thinking about very different kinds of disputes, mostly covert and informal, and how they are managed or left to fester in very different kinds of organizational settings. . . . This is a unique contribution to the study of conflict in organizations. . . . The authors have made a major contribution to a vast body of knowledge and opened up new avenues for applied research. . . . The authors are to be lauded for raising our awareness of hidden conflicts, their pervasiveness, and destructiveness in organizations of all kinds. . . . If you are a student of conflict and are seeking a scholarly work, this book is for you. It . . . will broaden your perspective, tell you something you didn't know, and give you plenty to think about." --Personnel Psychology "This book lends a refreshing perspective on an old theme." --Stern's HR Management Review "This is a much needed and delightful book about the hidden side of organizational life. The wide variety of settings in which hidden conflicts are observed and the high quality of the authors and their writing makes this not only an important but eminently readable book." Edgar H. Schein, Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology "The individual essays are excellent and well written. . . . Each of the essays, in addition to descriptive material, offers a useful theoretical framework for understanding informal dispute resolution. The essays would provide useful supplemental reading for a course in dispute resolution theory and also could be used as examples in a practice course." --The Alternative Newsletter Conflict is a persistent fact of organizational life. In the midst of daily activities, disputes arise over a host of work and other issues. In contrast to the findings in traditional studies of conflict in organizations, most organizational conflict never becomes public. Rather, it is expressed during routine social and work-related interactions among members, and occurs in ways that reflect the specific organizational structures and cultures in which the interactions are embedded. This examination richly details some of these less public forms of conflict, which may take the form of avoidance, toleration, gossip, and vengeance. A collection of ethnographic studies of conflict management, Hidden Conflict in Organizations illustrates the use of these behind-the-scenes approaches in a wide variety of organizational settings, including a police department, start-up biotechnology firm, and labor-management negotiation. The contributors make it clear that, far from being an occasional occurrence in organizations, conflict is embedded in their very fabric. They draw on theory developed in other fields--disputing in legal contexts, deconstruction of texts, and ideological critique, among others--to examine conflictual processes in organizations. Adding a new dimension to the study of organizational conflict, this volume looks at the frequency of conflict, shows how conflicts are "really" handled in organizations, and suggests that these conflicts can be better managed for organizational effectiveness.

        Book Description

Mainline Farming for Century 21 is a graduate course in agriculture. It does not settle for tip-toeing beyond the conventional, it takes bold strides — and it answers what the farmer wants to know, all the while demolishing the mythology on which toxic rescue chemistry has been built. Few people have asked and answered the right questions with the total consistency of Dr. Dan Skow. His teacher was the late Dr. Carey Reams, and the lessons Skow learned — and improved upon — were strong meat. They led him to a full appreciation of cause and effect, and the role of precedence in agriculture.

Dan Skow and Charles Walters have taken the complex biological theory of ionization as applied to agriculture and made it accessible to all. But Mainline Farming for Century 21 is more than a book of theory -- it teaches how to measure fertility down to the atomic level and project forward bins and bushels with brix high enough to confer immunity to fungal, bacterial and insect attack—and to ward off weeds. The practical, hands-on advice in this manual will lead growers to increased yields and more fertile acres, all without the use of toxic, synthetic chemicals.

I find this book very interesting since it gives us the view of people when chemical farming was just starting and the warnings at that time and how things have turned out. It gives a lot of practical advice on balancing the soil so we might produce healthy plants and livestock also.

        Book Description

This book uses a new, more accessible structure to describe astronomy from a modern perspective. It begins by describing the aims of astronomy, followed by two chapters describing how sizes and dimensions are determined, and how information is turned into models of the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe at large. There is a unique section on the history of matter, and the last three chapters describe and explain the solar system, the astronomy of stars, galaxies and cosmology.

5 out of 5 stars Young Oxford Book of Astronomy.......2000-12-07

This is a beautiful book full of great diagrams illustrating some difficult concepts in astronomy (for example, our place in the universe), wonderfully labeled drawings of planets, and the best of astronomical photographs. There are illustrations on every page. Little boxes of information offer more detail on some subjects ("milestones to the moon" or facts about each planets). The chapters are fairly short and easy to read. After some introductory chapters about exploring the universe and the tools that astronomers use, the book generally goes outward from the earth to the moon, the sun, the solar system, to distant stars (and their exotic varieties), then our galaxy (the Milky Way), other galaxies, quasars, and ideas about the beginning and end of the universe. The tiny star charts weren't very useful, but the glossary is nice. Although the book is aimed at a younger audience, many adults may enjoy the easy to read text and excellent illustrations.

        Book Description

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) is remembered, along with Copernicus and Galileo, as one of the greatest Renaissance astronomers. A gifted analytical thinker, he made major contributions to physics, astronomy, and mathematics. Kepler was trained as a theologian, yet did not hesitate to challenge church doctrine and prevailing scientific beliefs by supporting the theory of a Sun-centered solar system. As Imperial Mathematician to the Holy Roman Emperor, he analyzed the precise observations of the heavens that his predecessor, the great astronomer Tycho Brahe, had recorded. The book follows the ingenious scientist along the difficult pathway from raw data to his monumental discovery--the three Laws of Planetary Motion. Kepler also made fundamental contributions to optical theory, including a correct description of the function of the eye and a new and improved telescope design. His unique Rudolfine Tables, universal calculations of planetary motion, were unprecedented in their accuracy. James Voelkel vividly describes these scientific achievements, providing enough background in astronomy and geometry so even beginners can follow Kepler's thinking and enjoy this book. Equally captivating is his account of Kepler's tumultuous life, plagued by misery, disease, war, and fervent religious persecution. Oxford Portraits in Science is an ongoing series of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. These illustrated biographies combine accessible technical information with compelling personal stories to portray the scientists whose work has shaped our understanding of the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars TOUCHING STORY OF A GENIUS OF HIS TIMES.......2006-11-03

after reading this book you can't help but feel for this man... the tremendous upheavels he went through always worried about religious persecution but escaping it because of his position at court... but it gives a genuine feel of 'escaping by the skin of one's teeth'

then his many moves from city to city, taking family with him, all the deaths of family including children he endured and always religiously devout, believing in God and not one creed or another, always putting his heart and soul into his labors...

a remarkable story or a pious, honest, hard working, brilliant man of his times... it would have been a deep honor to know this man

5 out of 5 stars Kepler's work made the heliocentric theory forever undeniable.......2006-06-08

Kepler is the middle third of the great triumvirate of physicists that led humanity from a point where little was known about planetary motion to where nearly all was known. The first was Galileo Galilei and the last was Isaac Newton. Kepler contributed the three laws of planetary motion that are now named after him. They are:

*) The planets follow elliptical orbits about the sun.
*) The line connecting the planet to the sun sweeps out equal areas over equal times.
*) The square of the period of an orbit divided by the cube of the mean distance is a constant.

While Copernicus published the first convincing heliocentric theory, it was Kepler who gave the theory a mathematical foundation based on the years of accurate observations made by Tycho Brahe. It was his work that convinced the learned world that the planets orbited the sun.
When reading the history of Kepler, it is astonishing that he managed to be successful. He suffered from poor health, petty jealousies, lack of income, the death of some of his children, major religious persecution, plague and a war that devastated central Europe. He lived in a time of major religious conflict as the Reformation had moved strongly forward and the Counter-Reformation was responding violently. Kepler was a Protestant and remained so under the real threat of banishment and even death. Approximately one third of the people in central Europe perished during the widespread destruction of the thirty years war, which went on around Kepler. He was once trapped in a city placed under siege by Protestant forces and when told he must convert to Catholicism or be banished, he chose to leave.
Through it all, Kepler continued his intellectual pursuits, sometimes down false paths, but through perseverance and dedication, he was able to solve the puzzle of planetary motion. This story is not so much about the physicist persona of Kepler, it is a tale of triumph over tremendous obstacles where the result was of great benefit to all of humanity. This is a good, direct story of Kepler, his life and the environment he toiled in. I strongly recommend it as a textbook about Kepler, the history of his times and how modern physics was developed. Very little background in physics is needed to understand the presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book about One of Astronomy's Greatest Men.......1999-10-26

This piece does a great job at showing how Kepler changed astronomy and how it changed him.

          Book Description

The scientific innovations of Galileo Galilei are pivotal to our understanding of the laws of the natural world. Drawing on his diverse studies in philosophy, mathematics, mechanics, music, astronomy, and engineering, Galileo developed revolutionary theories that thoroughly changed the disciplines of physics, mathematics, astronomy, and technology. Galileo Galilei traces the great scientist's education, describes his maverick experiments in Padua and Pisa, and recreates the ingenious pathway of his famous discoveries. Often censored and imprisoned for his radical ideas that clashed with fundamental Church doctrines, Galileo persisted in his pursuit of scientific truths to bestow upon future generations the inspiration to challenge conventional views. His theories about the motions of falling bodies, his study of pendulums, and his major discoveries in astronomy made with a self-built telescope are all clearly explained in this volume. Heavily illustrated with photographs, graphics, and technical schemes, Galileo Galilei also features a number of sidebars elucidating important details of the great man's contributions. Oxford Portraits in Science is a collection of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. Book Description

Twenty-five years ago Philip L. Fradkin read a book about a remote bay on the Gulf of Alaska coast. The noted environmental historian was attracted by the threads of violence woven through the natural and human histories of Lituya Bay. Could these histories be related, and if so, how? The attempt to define the power of this wild place was a tantalizing and, as it turned out, dangerous quest. This compelling and eerie memoir tells of Fradkin's odyssey through recorded human history and eventually to the bay itself, as he explores the dark and unyielding side of nature.
Natural forces have always dominated Lituya Bay. Immense storms, powerful earthquakes, huge landslides, and giant waves higher than the world's tallest skyscrapers pound the whale-shaped fjord. Compelling for its deadly beauty, the bay has attracted visitors over time, but it has never been mastered by them.
Its seasonal occupants throughout recorded history--Tlingit Indians, European explorers, gold miners, and coastal fishermen seeking a harbor of refuge--have drowned, gone mad, slaughtered fur-bearing animals with abandon, sifted the black sand beaches for minute particles of gold, and murdered each other. Only a hermit found peace there. Then the author and his small son visited the bay and were haunted by a grizzly bear.
As an environmental writer for the Los Angeles Times and western editor of Audubon magazine, Fradkin has traveled from Tierra del Fuego to the North Slope of Alaska. But nothing prepared him for Lituya Bay, a place so powerful it turned one person's hair white. This story resonates with echoes of Melville, Poe, and Conrad as it weaves together the human and natural histories of a beautiful and wild place.

                5 out of 5 stars A look at America's most dangerous place.......2007-02-16

On About.com, I said the following about this book:

This dark, impressionistic exploration of landscape and culture in America's most dangerous place is the heart of Fradkin's "earthquake trilogy." In Lituya Bay, nature is stark and the human presence always precarious. In this book is no comforting gloss of scientific detachment. Even the book's geologists feel the chill along the spine, and the ghosts of the bay, witnesses to repeated catastrophe, reach surprisingly far into our world.

Knowing geology can be informative, but no less unsettling. Given an aerial photo of Lituya Bay and its location on a world tectonic map, one can spot its geologic hazards in minutes, even moments, and summarize them thus: It is a fjord, guarded at its mouth by boulders of an intact terminal moraine, threatened at its head by calving glaciers and oversteepened rock faces that lie in the path of a plate-bounding transpressional fault. The geographer will add that the bay has strong tides and sits in a subarctic setting between the world's highest coastal range and one of its stormiest seas. Made for shipwreck on the outside, landslide tsunamis within and deadly weather the year round, Lituya Bay may be the most dangerous place in the world that is not Antarctica or an erupting volcano.

I visited Lituya Bay one calm day in June 1976 aboard a research vessel, an exhilarating but tense experience. The bay's entire shore was shorn of trees for tens of meters above the high-tide line, and at the bay's head a colossal swath of mountainside some 600 meters high was similarly bare. A landslide there in 1958, caused by a major earthquake, had pushed a gigantic wave over that mountain's shoulder and out the bay. Find Lituya Bay in Google Earth and you'll see the marks today. My ship seemed very small there beneath the steep walls of ice and stone. A full-grown Alaskan brown bear on the rocky slope looked the size of a mite.

I'm saying that I was ready for hair-raising reading with Philip Fradkin's account in "Wildest Alaska: Journeys of Great Peril in Lituya Bay." It is the middle book in his earthquake trilogy that includes the California-centered books "Magnitude 8" and "The Great Earthquake and Firestorms of 1906." Their common theme is that the perils of a place make their mark on the peoples who live there. The geologic hazards of California are dire enough, but Fradkin sought out an even more extreme example.

Geologists expected something like the great wave of 1958, but it and several others in the previous century were surprises to those in and around Lituya Bay. The native Tlingits considered the bay a bad place, visiting only seasonally for hunting and occasional warfare. A water-centered people, the pre-European Tlingits had a horror of death by drowning, which interrupts the soul's cycle of cremation and rebirth, giving rise to baleful beings called Land Otter Men. Lituya Bay had many, and when angry they were known to shake the bay and flush it clean of living things. . . .

Fradkin visited Lituya Bay in person, "with great trepidation," in the summer of 1980. He found himself haunted by gruesome shades of the past and by the animus of the place in the form of a persistent grizzly bear, never seen but evident by its sounds and smell. The aftermath of his visit included uncanny encounters with the Tlingit spirit and, near his home on the San Andreas fault, the apparition of a Land Otter Man. One gets a whiff of Coleridge's sea-changed Ancient Mariner in Fradkin's epilogue, and a sense that nature is not only mightier than we imagine, but mightier than we can imagine. Of all of Fradkin's cautionary tales in his earthquake trilogy, those in "Wildest Alaska" cut closest to the heart as well as the brain.

4 out of 5 stars Nature and Culture in Lituya Bay, Alaska.......2006-04-22

A fine little book about Lituya Bay, a stunningly beautiful nook of sea, ice, rock and rainforest just north of Glacier Bay Alaska on the pacific coast in southeast Alaska. The bay is south of Yakutat and Dry Bays and is a remote part of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The Bay has quite a story to tell and Fradkin does a good job of laying out the human/nature interactions that have gone on in this place. Fradkin breaks the narrative down into Place, Tlingits, Russians, French, Americans and his own experience with Lituya Bay, then proceeds to tell tales of misadventure. The bay itself is typical southeast Alaska rainforest with a heavy influence from the pacific, and has a history of exploration, short-lived colonization, natives, mining, hermits and fishermen. Mix this with its precipitous topography, glaciers and its location over an active fault and you have quite a tale of nature and culture to tell.

The Bay has taken a lot of human life over the years due to its peculiar physiography and the fact that it is on the fearweather fault. Not only is its entrance treacherous, but every so often when the fault slips, great amounts of rock can potentially fall into the almost vertical shoreline of the east end of the bay. This can cause massive amounts of seawater to displace in seconds and the effects on the bay and its island can be catastrophic. In 1958 the earth shook violently unleashing a massive wave from the back of the bay. The deforestation on the mountainside reached the 1740 ft. level, the highest ever recorded. The harrowing tale of survival the fisherman in the bay at the time tell I will save for Fradkin.

The entrance to the bay has claimed many more lives over the centuries, and the Tlingit, the French, the Russians and Americans all have their tales of death and peril in Lituya Bay. Fradkin estimates a ship a year since 1950 has gone down in the entrance, mostly because of the dangerous tides and breakers. He does a good job of relating these tales, and then tells of his own experiences in the bay. The writing style is annoying at first, but Fradkin seems to find his voice about halfway through. The book is well researched and includes a good bibliography with a wide variety of sources. Fradkin has a journalism background, and does not describe the bay in scientific terms, although he does provide the relevant facts. If you are looking for a scientific narrative this is not it. It is more an environmental history of a specific locale, a narrative through which historic accounts of misadventure unfold in the never ending drama of man and nature in southeast Alaska. It's a fascinating and quick read, full of miscellaneous historical facts, as well as the broader context of Lituya Bay in Alaskan history, I recommend it.

Elizabeth,Jessica and friends are still trekking through Death Valley. They have made a mistake by choosing to take the gold they found because now their lives are in danger as vicious crooks, who are alot greedier than they are,are on their trail. And Elizabeth is pushed over a cliff!

This book was ok. However I want to know why Liz was picked to go on this trip. I mean, its a survival trip and stuff so shouldn't they have just the jocks go on it?? All Liz does is sit around and write articles...but anyways back to the review. Heather is driving Jessica crazy by flirting with Ken. Everyone is arguing and not getting along. Heather twists her ankle or something (I forgot) and so Jessica and Heather have to stay behind and wait for the others to return for them. While Liz and the guys go ahead, they get into yet another argument over which trail to take. So they split up again, with Bruce and Todd (who DO NOT get along) going one way, and Ken and Liz going the other. Ken and Liz are wondering if they still like each other and Todd is VERY jealous. Everyone keeps a diary entry and all 3 guys write about Liz! I started having second thoughts about Heather because in her entry, she wrote that Jessica was prettier than her, she missed her mom and she felt bad for ruining the trip for everyone. Ken wrote all about Liz! haha. I'm too lazy to explain everything soo in a quick summary: Bruce saves Liz's life, they all reunite when 3 bandits try to kill Heather and Jessica, they all finally get along, almost get shot, get lost in a cave that fills with water and miraculously get home safely. It seemed as if they would finally all be friends and get along but in the next book, #117 Jessica the Genius, Jessica is fighting with Bruce and Heather again and the trip isn't even mentioned. Not a very realistic book.

5 out of 5 stars Nightmare in Death Valley, a wicked book!.......2000-04-19

I really loved this book, it's one of the best books i've read.I loved it when they set off, and I admired Elizabeths courage to lead the group through the valley. There were some scary moments, but thankfully they all escaped. I was shocked when one of the escaped convicts decided to turn over a new leaf, and help them escape from the valley.I would recomend this book to someone aged ten.

4 out of 5 stars Nightmare In Death Valley Review.......1999-12-30

Nightmare in Death Valley is probably one of my favourites. Jessica, Elizabeth, Ken, Todd, Bruce and Heather go out together for a survival trip. But it ends up in disaster when the group finds a map and a sack of gold. They immediately go off track to find the gold but are in deep trouble when they start throwing away their food just to make room for the gold. To top off all of that they run into 3 escaped convicts who are also looking for the gold. I think the book was pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Heather Mallone, being Annoying as usual...........1999-06-15

Heather, Bruce, Ken, Jesisca, Todd and Elizabeth are in Death Valley on a survival coarse. Things start to go wrongs when Heather is paired with Ken, and her flirting drives Jessica insane, but Ken doesn't seem to be bothered. Will Todd and Jess strangle each other? Will Bruce and ELizabeth decide they still like each other? Will theyget out the desert alive?....
