Book Description

It is almost impossible for accounting professionals to keep abreast of the flood of issuances by FASB and AICPA, as well as the numerous interpretations and bulletins explaining them, and the activities of the SEC and EITF. Accountants continue to rely on single, authoritative references to provide answers to all reasonable questions on accounting and financial reporting. Although FASB is the primary source of authoritative accounting guidance, other sources continue to emerge and the importance of the AICPA, SEC, GASB, and Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) as regulatory bodies continues to grow. As a result, accountants find it necessary to rely on guidance provided by the EITF and AICPA SOPs and guides.

4 out of 5 stars Accountants' Handbook.......2000-06-19

Working in public accounting for a long time, but beeing new to the accounting world in the U.S., I found this book very instructive and helpful to resolve practical questions on one hand and finding access to the underlying "World of Statements", the scientific backbone, at the same time.

First it offers a red thread through most of the relevant areas of accounting and financial reporting. But even more important, the book contains a reliable and quick guidance to find solutions for a lot of different actual practical issues, occurring in specific industries and situations.

        Book Description

Caring is a nitty-gritty process. Cultivating Common Ground teaches us how to care at work with real life experiences, rather than through conceptual thinking alone. Caring relationships to our work and each other give meaning to our work and provide a powerful source of energy for our organizations. Therefore, we must release relationships from their hiding place in the informal structure of the organization. The way to do that is to work together, to cultivate common ground, in order to make a conscious commitment to hold a life and a task in common. As old structures crumble, we have the opportunity to build caring communities at work. This book explains what went wrong in the first place, names our fears, and provides real-life examples of how to release the power of relationships in the workplace.

Daniel S. Hanson is President of the Fluid Dairy Division of Land O'Lakes, Inc., an instructor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and a speaker and author on the subject of organizational change and personal empowerment. Hanson draws on his 30 years experience as a corporate executive for four Fortune 500 companies, his extensive research, and his own life-changing experience to offer practical, hands-on presentations and trainings. He is also the author of A Place To Shine: Emerging From the Shadows at Work, Butterworth-Heinemann, 1996.

"This is a compassionate and powerful call for caring in the workplace. Dan Hanson is right on the mark when he suggests that we need to take courageous steps toward a new, caring workplace. He is one of the best teachers of building community at work you'll ever meet."
--Richard J. Leider, founding partner, The Inventure Group, author, "Repacking Your Bags" and "The Power of Purpose"

"Dan Hanson delves broadly and deeply into the nature of relationships in the workplace. He lays before us the common ground that nourishes results as well as meaning and satisfaction for the human heart and soul. Hanson provides the tools and knowledge we need to cultivate this garden. We are called to fertilize the soil with our own courage."
--Margaret A. Lulic, author, "Who We Could Be at Work"

Addresses the neglected issue of caring relationships in the workplace
        Written from real life experiences
Looks at why caring work relationships have traditionally been looked down upon

Finally, an author who tells it like is is ! Hanson's real life experiences blend with his academic research to produce a book that has practical application both professionally and personally. His master of the difficult art of telling parables adds a dimension to this book that is missing in other books on this topic.

          Book Description

Integrated pest management (IPM) is an ecologically based approach for modifying the impact of pests to tolerable levels. Thresholds are based on the concept of economic injury level (EIL), which includes economic, management effectiveness, pest biology, and host stress considerations.
Economic Thresholds for Integrated Pest Management draws on scientific advances in entomology, plant pathology, and weed science. The book discusses the history of decision making in IPM, EILs, and approaches to developing economic thresholds. The seventeen contributors stress the importance of understanding the pest-host relationship and of taking into account such factors as environmental risk, pesticide resistance, and delayed and cumulative effects. With pressing challenges in pest science, including new pests, new governmental policies, and growing demands on agriculture, the need for better understanding of thresholds has never been greater.

              Book Description

This book deals with a topic of vital importance to the design and function of nanodevices. It covers combined systems of electrons and electromagnetic fields at nanometer scales. When the dimensions of an electromagnetic field reach the nanometer scale, it is impossible to determine whether it is an electromagnetic phenomenon or an excited electronic system. This volume covers this interdisciplinary field, with contributions from both the electronic system and electromagnetic areas.

              Book Description

Charles Waterton (1782-1865), a true English eccentric, was made famous in his own lifetime by publication of his wide-ranging travels and natural history observations. Waterton wrote three volumes of Essays on Natural History and the best-selling Wanderings in South America, which has never been out of print since its first publication in 1825. Unlike previous biographies, this book is an unabashed celebration of his eccentricity, a fond salute to a fine old English gentleman. The life of Charles Waterton should encourage the preservation of what remains of his kind of world, and remind us of what the world has lost to insensitivity and greed.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Charles Waterton. A Biography.......2005-11-30

Waterton was a traveller, writer, ornithologist, taxidermist, a lifelong student of natural history and an environmentalist. He was also prone to accidents and arguments. As a youth in Spain, he had a close call with death from the "black vomit." Later, on the Essequibo river in Guyana, he captured a cayman with a special baited hook, then rode it for forty yards on the bank, using its forelegs as a bridle. When he finally settled down in the 1820s, he converted his Yorkshire estate into a nature reserve long before National Parks were thought of. (The Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta was named in his honour.) He fought a legal battle with the owner of a neighbouring soap factory whose noxious gases and effluent were killing vegetation on his estate and poisoning a river.
The author gives us a sense of Waterton's strong Catholic upbringing and background, his ascetic lifestyle, his love of wildlife and his charity towards human neighbours less fortunate than himself. He also provides cryptic, sometimes amusing, descriptions of Waterton's frank exchanges of opinion with "closet naturalists" and others who did not accept what were, to him, unassailable facts. Waterton was often right, sometimes he was wrong, but, right or wrong, he clung tenaciously to what he believed. He was intolerant of bigotry in others while not being entirely innocent himself.
The section on curare is more accurate and comprehensive than those in other Waterton biographies. It also includes details of his animal experiments that do not appear in anaesthesia textbooks. Waterton set off on his first "wandering" into the interior of Guyana in 1812 to obtain curare from the Macusi Indians. His best known experiment was the one in England in 1814 in which a donkey was injected with curare, became paralysed and was kept alive by artificial respiration, using a pair of fire bellows through a tracheotomy, until the effect of the curare wore off. The author also includes verbatim quotations from Waterton's vivid and endearing accounts of his earlier experiments on birds and animals in Guyana, as well as Waterton's belief that curare could be an effective treatment against hydrophobia and tetanus.
Such is the continuing fascination of Charles Waterton that this biography by Brian Edginton is the fourth to be published in the past fifty years. The author's refreshingly informal, sometimes unconventional, writing style is eminently suited to his subject. This is not to say that the book is casually written. It is extensively referenced from Waterton's own books, pamphlets and collections of his letters, from contemporary and modern newspaper and magazine articles on both sides of the Atlantic, and from many other miscellaneous sources. Those readers who would like to meet the @most incongruous mixture of bizarre eccentricity, credulity and unbelief, coupled with a brilliant originality of thought, in a somewhat rough setting of common sense" will enjoy this book.

                  Book Description

On the mean streets of Jersey City, St. Anthony High School is more than a tiny brick schoolhouse—it is a beacon of hope. Though the school constantly teeters on the brink of bankruptcy, it is held together by Felician nuns devoted to helping students overcome the scourges of poverty by preparing them for college educations and a brighter future. And each year from the student body of just over 200, Coach Bob Hurley forges an elite nationally ranked basketball team through hard work, his coaching genius, and the sheer force of his personality. In thirty-one years as a coach, Hurley has won twenty-two state championships, two USA Today national titles, and has sent all of his players to college except for one (including his son Bobby, one of the greatest players in college basketball history). Award-winning sportswriter Adrian Wojnarowski brings the stories of the St. Anthony 2003Â-2004 season to vivid life, as Hurley struggles to turn a troubled group of players into state champions and national title contenders again—while keeping the school he loves alive to continue its educational mission at any cost.

If you're a coach this is for you. If you're a sports fan this is for you. I loved it so much I bought a book for my entire coaching staff. And we are a hockey team! There are a lot lessons and values that Coach Hurley teaches. More importantly it's about life. He never let up on these kids and pushed them to success. Challenged them to succeed. At that age level they need guidance, they need someone to sponsor them. Then its up to them to follow the path Coach Hurley gives them. It's amazing how a time tested path still can't lead some kids. It's a struggle between the kids backgrounds and the future they can have
Wow what a great book. What I liked is that these kids are now in college so we can follow their careers.
The one player that sticks out to me is Sean McCready. Great talent, bad guidance (family). Now he is sitting out the 2008 season because he transferred. Coach Hurley was right!

I also loved the fact that he sweeps the floor. That's his time, and we all need our own time. But coach is dedicated to a school that is struggling. There is no way a school like this should be on the verge of bankruptcy. Coach could leave and make millions, but he doesn't. Because if he does the school will close.

5 out of 5 stars The Street Stops at St. Anthony's .......2007-06-05

Adrian Wojnarowski's "The Miracle of St. Anthony: A Season with Coach Bob Hurley and Basketball's Most Improbable Dynasty" is one of the best sports and leadership books I have read this past year.

St. Anthony's is a private Catholic High School in Jersey City, NJ, with 230 students (120 boys). Students come from an area where 16% pass the HS proficiency test and where the local drug-infested, back-sliding culture has a hold on the kids. Despite its size and location, St. Anthony's basketball teams have gone undefeated four times, have won two USA Today national titles, and 24 New Jersey Parochial state championships. The basketball program has developed 200 college players, including 5 who went on to the National Basketball Association.

St. Anthony's is a special and safe place under Srs. Felicia and Alan and legendary Coach, Bob Hurley - the streets stop here. Their focus in athletics and academics has been to help kids get to the finish line. They share a collective value that there is no shortcut to success.

While Sister Felicia and Sister Alan play prominent roles in the success of St. Anthony's, "The Miracle of St. Anthony" is mostly about Bob Hurley and the class of 2004 - the most athletically and socially underachieving team in St. Anthony's history. Yet, under Hurley's coaching leadership, the team went undefeated, winning the NJ State Championship and was named by USA Today as the top high school team of the year.

Hurley struggles with the problems of the inner city and sees the potential in these kids that they do not see in themselves. He has always been a disciple of John Wooden... fundamentals, well-conditioned, team play, and defense...and he has always been a no-nonsense driver.

He creates an expectation of performance and accountability that the kids will not find anywhere else in their lives, and helps them out the door to life with values and a voice to become the best they can. And despite his daunting ways, the kids respect Hurley and when returning after graduation, they always come home to the warm embrace of family. The relationship changes from tough task master to a friend.

"St. Anthony's" covers the entire basketball year from pre-season preparations to the championship game. Wojnarowski provides the ups and downs of the season - injuries, players leaving the team, tough wins, and all the key relationships that makes St. Anthony's the special place it is.

This is a great read for anyone interested in coaching, leadership, and basketball.

Even those who aren't fans of basketball will enjoy this story of a coach who works hard to help kids make the most of themselves and their skills.

                  5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-01-12

My husband is a basketball coach and an avid reader. He described this book as one of the best books he has ever read. Purchased it on Amazon.com for a great price and it arrived quickly in new excellent condition. I would recomment it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for whatever you do.......2006-11-06

I'm not a big basketball fan. I didn't know Bob Hurley. I wasn't familiar with St Anthony. And I've spent little time in and around Jersey City. But after receiving a recommendation from a friend that this book was worth the read, I could not put it down.

This is a compelling tale of someone who cares enough to go way above and beyond what most of us are willing to do to give back to an important cause. Many Dads coach basketball just long enough to get their kids lots of playing time. Bob Hurley has done the same long past his "own" kids worked through his system. He has dedicated his life to helping kids get the most from themselves despite all the odds. He happens to use the basketball court as his classroom and the game as an analogy for life.

Most of us even casual fans have heard of Bobby Hurley, one of two sons of the books hero, and a Duke basketball legend. What wasn't known was that Bobby received his training at the court of his Dad. He, together with a host of high school players, have all learned life lessons as well as the skills required to be great players from the master.

I couldn't help feeling guilty that Bob, who could have gone virtually anywhere to coach, gave it all up to dedicate his life to giving back to those less privileged than most of us. Adrian Wojnarowski, the books talented author, has given us the opportunity to learn more about this dedicated individual and perhaps get us all thinking about how we all might give a little more back to life. And I almost forgot, it also provides a gripping story of an undefeated high school basketball season.

                      5 out of 5 stars Hilarius.......2004-02-05

Jess and Liz have decided to help bruce get his parents back together again even though the twins parents are agaisnt it. jess and her elitist friends have been phoning up zodiac hotlines and learning the future through horoscopes. They tell jessica that because mercury is in retrograde everything will go wrong for the twins. The twins are skeptical but as they carry out their plans they realise the horoscope was true because all their hard work is getting messed up including Jessica's love life (Or so she thinks)
In the end bruce's parents... Read the book and find out

                      4 out of 5 stars O.K.......1999-04-03

This book was okay. If you like astrology, than you'll probably like this book even though there wasn't a lot. Jessica has taken an interest in things to do with the stars and is convinced that the planets are conspiring against her when her matchmaking schemes (for Bruce's parents) don't go according to plan. Elizabeth and Todd are back together after Elizabeth's temporary insanity (being attracted to Bruce) Of course they had to get together again. Read and enjoy!
