Amazonian Ecology.......2000-06-24

Emilio Moran's book could reasonably be called the most recent definitive anthropological work on the Amazonian region. In addition to the ecological analysis, it encompasses a huge amount of secondary research. This book is meticulously detailed, and is also quite well written, but is not especially accessible to a general audience. Without a basic background in the Amazonian region or at least in ecology in general, the reader will have a hard time following Moran's arguments.

The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety. Gallwey's revolutionary thinking, built on a foundation of Zen thinking and humanistic psychology, was really a primer on how to get out of your own way to let your best game emerge. It was sports psychology before the two words were pressed against each other and codified into an accepted discipline.

The new edition of this remarkable work--Billie Jean King called the original her tennis bible--refines Gallwey's theories on concentration, gamesmanship, breaking bad habits, learning to trust yourself on the court, and awareness. There are aspects of psychobabble and mysticism to be found here, sure, but Gallwey instructs as much by anecdote as anything else, and time has ultimately proved him a guru. What seemed radical in the early '70s is now accepted ammunition for the canon; the right mental approach is every bit as important as a good backhand. Gallwey expands his concepts and approaches to the inner game. He manages to explain his ideas even more clearly and identifies many more inner obstacles. But his approach is the same - cooperation of Self1 and Self2, letting go and trusting your body and applying the principle of non-judgment.

He goes deeper into the natural learning mechanism and uses many examples from his coaching that shows us exactly how the lesson went and what his questions and advice to the player were.

The best parts of this book are the drills. Their goal is to quiet our mind and allow our potential to come through unhindered. And quieting the mind goes even deeper in this book. He calls it Progressing in the Art of Relaxed Concentration and it has four stages: paying attention, interested attention, absorbed attention and finally »being wholly there« or union.

What he describes is actually a pathway to »the zone« which is a more common term among coaches and athletes for this special state of mind.

The parts on natural learning and body awareness can help the beginner and the advanced player to quickly realize - become aware - of his shortcomings and correct his technique. Which usually corrects itself by the way...

The book ends with two very intriguing chapters which go deep into human psyche - self-image and the will to win. The self image part is quite possibly a real eye opener if you haven't read any books on similar subjects. It makes you realize all the limitations that we put on ourselves because of our self image.

There are many books about tennis technique and tactics. There are also many books that deal with the mental approach to tennis but this approach is limited to off court or in between points or games. Timothy Gallwey's work fills the gap with one of the most challenging aspects of tennis - what do with our mind during the ball exchange. It shows us how to achieve a mental state that will allow us to play at our best regardless of our level.

This reading is a must for anyone who feels that his mind is not yet his best ally in the tennis mind game.

All That I Needed.......2001-11-20

I just wanted to share the incredible feeling that just a little patience managed to get me after reading this book. Mr. Gallwey has managed to put into words how one feels and thinks when involved in sport (any sport not just tennis). I first read this book 18 years ago, and my snooker game (billiards) improved immensely. For anyone wanting to master their sport, and find out what "being in the zone" is all about, this is a MUST read!

Revolutionary To Tennis.......2002-08-24

This book is the greatest tennis book I have read and I have read 16, yes 16 mental toughness books. Before I read this book I had a bad temper on the court. I went to Westerns closed and was deducted a point for screaming. Now theres no chance I would lose any point. At States for highschool I went to the finals at 1 singles and lost, but I would have never made it that far without this book. This book has become my second coach. What a great book. Even if you have a good mental game, read this book, its phenonminal.

If you like stories about "The Titanic", read this book........2004-07-27

This is an excellent romantic suspense story that hinges upon the sinking of The Titanic. Forget the movie, "Titanic" -- read this book instead.

This is a much-overlooked book and it deserves more attention than it has received. I was pleased to see it has enjoyed a reprint.

You really can't go wrong with this book. If you buy it, you'll be glad -- it's an excellent, haunting read and it most definately entertains from beginning to end.

Utterly horrible!.......2002-09-30

"Amanda Miranda" is by far the worst book I have ever read. They must have abridged all the exciting, good parts out of the story! Peck isn't my favorite author, but this plot sounded very intriguing, but I was only able to read a few pages a day. The Titanic was not introduced until the end of the novel, and when it was mentioned, it was brief. I do not recommend.

Interesting Plot!!!.......2002-01-31

I read the YA version of this book because I am 13. I love it!!!! This book is about a rich girl named Amanda. Her servant is Miranda, and the two of them happen to look exactly alike.
So alike, that all of Amanda's boyfriends get confused, and that leads to trouble. To make it even more confusing, it takes place on the Titanic. The bad part was that some of it was too confusing just to read once- I had to read some parts over and over.

I really didn't like it.......2001-09-21

This book was decently written, but I just didn't like it very much. I felt that it was too contrived, too obscure, and characters one could not relate to. There was too much psychic distance from the characters to know what they were thinking. If you're looking for a book about the Titanic, which I must admit I was, this isn't one. Try Titanic: the Long Night by Diane Hoh, which, while it is also in 3rd person dramatic, it is much more interesting and comprehendable.

Exciting and Entertaining.......2001-01-30

Amanda Miranda by Richard Peck was a wonderful book. The plot line was excellent and the characters were delightful. This book is definitely for a person that likes twisting, romantic story lines. It was almost as if there were secrets hidden in the pages of the book itself. The book took so many turns you couldn't tell what would happen next. A few things that I saw the same in the book and the actual sinking of the Titanic were when Miranda was on the great ship, she described the people that were on the ship in first and second class. People such as, Molly Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Macy. Another similarity was the description she gave when only a few people on the sinking ship knew that the ship had hit an iceberg and that they were sinking. Some of the upper-class men and women thought nothing of it and did not bother to put on their lifejackets only to be the first ones escorted off the Titanic. Amanda Miranda is both factual and entertaining. I fully recommend this book to a young adult reader.
