                        Book Description

                        A guide to soil analysis for chemists and environmental scientists

                        Soil-so essential to life on earth-is one of the most complicated of materials. A complex mixture of inorganic and organic solids, liquids, and gases, soil presents a challenging material for analysis, especially for researchers who are not specialists in soil chemistry. This clear, broadly applicable reference provides chemists and environmental scientists with the background they need to analyze soil, interpret their findings, and develop new analytical methods for soil. Introduction to Soil Chemistry will also be valuable to the soil scientist confronting soil analyses that appear to be incorrect or do not work.

                        Introduction to Soil Chemistry: Analysis and Instrumentation investigates the most important soil characteristics that impact analysis and the procedures, chemicals, and equipment used to determine the composition and quantity of soil constituents. It also discusses factors that interfere with accurate soil analysis. Chapters examine such topics as:
                        * Large features-horizons, peds, soil color, and soil naming
                        * Microscopic to atomic orbital description of soil chemical characteristics
                        * Soil components in combination
                        * The biological and organic components in soil
                        * The soil solution and soil air
                        * Electrical measurements, titration, and extraction
                        * Spectroscopy and chromatography
                        * Speciation

                        This book is enhanced by numerous examples within the text, which provide the reader with a practical understanding of various analytical procedures, along with the pitfalls and interferences that may be encountered. Bibliographies and additional resources appear at the end of each chapter.

                          Book Description

                          Intelligent information Retrieval comprehensively surveys scientific information retrieval, which is characterized by growing convergence of information expressed in varying complementary forms of data - textual, numerical, image, and graphics; by the fundamental transformation which the scientific library is currently being subjected to; and by computer networking which as become an essential element of the research fabric. Intelligent Information Retrieval addresses enabling technologies, so-called `wide area network resource discovery tools', and the state of the art in astronomy and other sciences. This work is essential reading for astronomers, scientists in related disciplines, and all those involved in information storage and retrieval.

                            Book Description

                            A new direction for policy and action is outlined in this reconsideration of the theoretical framework and application of social work. A holistic, inclusive vision of social work is presented to usher in a change from a self-centered, anticollectivist paradigm to a mutually beneficial, community-focused worldview. Criticized are the assumptions, values, and beliefs that have guided the dominant worldview's support of environmental devastation. Concerns for sustainability, social justice, and global consciousness guide this revision of social work.

                            Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.

                            Book Description

                            The building blocks of winning golf -- from one of the masters of the game.

                            Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 -- if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step-by-step and stroke by stroke.

                            In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations -- as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin.

                            Hogan's lessons are as relevant today as when this book was first written. This is a great instructional tool. Golfers at any level would benefit.

                            5 out of 5 stars Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.......2007-10-11

                            This book is an absolutely must have for any one really committed to improving their golf swing. I read it and improved immediately. Since then I have read it over and over again, always finding some little tid-bit that helps me to play a little better. Don't start another golf season without it!

                            4 out of 5 stars Essential for the beginner.......2007-10-10

                            Whether you're a beginning golfer, or need a refresher, Hogan's book is the starting point.

                            4 out of 5 stars Very good but.............2007-10-07

                            not as good as How to Build a Classic Golf Swing by Ernie Els. Hogan's book explains in great details the basic to a golf swing. If you learn these basic fundamentals of the swing you will never have a bad swing. The difference in Hogan's book vs. Els' book is illustrations. Els' book does a better job with photos from different angles where Hogan's illustrations are sketches which don't hammer home the points the same. In my opinion I would order both while reading Hogan's book first. Els' book will help you understand the statements made in the first book.

                            5 out of 5 stars Super Book.......2007-09-26

                            Super book. If your an experienced golfer or new to the sport this is a must read for establishing the basic fundamentals of the swing.

                                              The Kirkus review is unfair and off-the-mark.
                                              This is the autobiographical story of writer Aaron Latham in the depths of grief for his sister's death, and depression, who feels the answer lies in Africa. So he packs up himself, his daughter, and his wife (CBS's Lesley Stahl) and heads off to safari in Africa.
                                              He gives a vivid and insightful description of his own internal and external journeys. Along the way he meets some of the giants of research in Africa (Craig Sholley's work with gorillas, Cynthia Moss with elephants, Richard Leakey with early man), and reports their insights into their work and the significance of Africa to each of us.
                                              This out-of-stock book is well worth searching out at your library or book dealer.

                                                  The second Dark Arts Books release is Waiting for October, a compilation of 12 new tales and rare reprints by four of horror's most evocative authors: Adam Pepper, Sarah Pinborough, Jeff Strand and Jeffrey Thomas. From body parts gone missing to body parts inexplicably arriving, from parasitic children to dead grammas, Waiting for October is filled with the harvest of four tantalizingly twisted imaginations.

                                                  Mike Scott befriends a young girl named Sarah after his family was killed by a horrible car wreck, resulting from one man's single mistake. Being able to see Sarah everyday helped Mike begin to feel better about his life, which was turned upside down by the accident. The author, McBay,wrote how life can take many unexpected turns when you don't except them to with his creative plot.

                                                  Even though Mike's family was killed and his legs were amputated, from the car accident, he was able to forget about the horrible past with the aid Sarah's presence. However, the teacher that he never really trusted caused him to lose her as well. Although he was devastated, she revisits him to easy the pain on important days in Mike's life, such as his high school graduation. Life may have thrown many curves at Mike, yet each one only made him into a stronger person later on.

                                                  Along with the well crafted plot, the author caused the book to flow like a river of words, cascading down and over a waterfall. When I first read this book, my heart went out to each of the main characters, causing me to feel the glee and the sorrow that all of them faced during the hardships of their young lives. The well written words caused the emotions to pour out me. I would laugh whenever something was funny and cry when the sorrow was almost too overwhelming. The time when Sarah ran off, looking hurt, torn and ragged, caused the tears film over my eyes and leak out down my check. Every time that I was going to put the book down to do something else, I was always drawn back. It was as though the words were demanding me to get back as soon as possible, so that I wouldn't have to wait to find out what happened next.

                                                  Being able to actually feel what a character is going through as though you are that character, facing all the unexcepted turns in their lifes, reflects on how well the author,McBay, has so carefully chosen each word, to create this master piece, Waiting for Sarah.

                                                        Since her grandfather's death three years ago, Joanna Blake has been unable to leave her house. Every time she walks through a doorway, she walks into the past. As a result, she has become a sickly recluse. Concerned villagers send the new doctor to pay a house call on her. Sparks fly between the two and, determined to prove that she's not insane, she brings the doctor into the past with her. This begins a series of adventures in Edwardian England as the two attempt to resolve their separate issues with events and people of the past, and they grow increasingly closer to each other.
