Book Description
The competence-based perspective on strategy and management emerged in the 1990s as a new approach to developing strategy and management theory and practice. In the past decade, the focus on organizational competences -- and the resources, capabilities, and processes that create competences -- has provided a highly productive "broad church" for theory development, research, and practice in both strategic and general management.
Authored by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working within the competence perspective, the papers in this volume contribute to developing a better theoretical and practical understanding of
internal processes that significantly affect an organization's competences by exploring the dynamic, systemic, cognitive, and holistic aspects of internal processes. The papers present both theoretical developments and empirical research based on a variety of case studies and other research in diverse industrial and geographical contexts.
The papers in this volume develop four themes. Part I includes papers that address the key issues of defining and communicating the
strategic logic that directs and guides an organization's competence building and leveraging. The papers in Part II investigate the need to develop
strategic flexibilities that enable a firm to respond effectively to a range of future environmental uncertainties. Part III includes papers that focus on ways to
identify and operationalize an organization's competences -- the ultimate source of an organization's ability to compete effectively in its environment. Part IV presents several papers that investigate the
systemic interdependencies of an organization's competence building and leveraging activities.

Practical Advice.......2007-05-15
I give Andy Radford's book five stars, because now that I'm actually finished with months of off and on reading and I'm now down to actually building my stone walls, its his book (among half a dozen others), that I'm using for help.
Mr. Radford's experience is entirely from Great Britain where he lives. This could have been a big problem, since he works in a different climate with different geology. There is a bit of history over there about stone walls, so perhaps this is why the author ably communicated universal techniques that span regional differencs in aesthetics and stone.
Actually, the value I continue to get out of the book, despite the differences in geography and culture, probably result from Mr. Radford's experience as a teacher. His book (text, photos, step by step, and categorization by type of wall) follows a logical sequence specifically designed for the beginner.
The only thing I smiled about was the front cover photo - of a wall that very much looks like it was a beginner's first effort! Like they say, don't just a book by its cover. Inside is everything you need to know about the fundamentals of dry stacking a nice stone wall in a variety of situations.

Book Description
"Interwoven tightly within the fabric of this abused and worn-out land are countless stories of the people who wrestled a living here. Many of the stories are forgotten and many more are untold; I feel fortunate that I was allowed to hear some of them."-from the Introduction
In its prime, the Texas Blackland Prairie cut a swath of twelve million acres across the state from near San Antonio north to the Red River. Perhaps less than one-tenth of one percent of this vast prairie remains-small patches tucked away here and there, once serving as hay meadows or sprouting from rock too stony to plow.
Matt White's connections with both prairie plants and prairie people are evident in the stories of discovery and inspiration he tells as he tracks the ever-dwindling parcels of tallgrass prairie in northeast Texas. In his search, he stumbles upon some unexpected fragments of virgin land, as well as some remarkable tales of both destruction and stewardship.
Helping us understand what a prairie is and how to appreciate its beauty and importance, White also increases our awareness of prairies, past and present, so that we might champion their survival in whatever small plots remain.

Impressive Historic Perspective.......2007-04-21
I normally don't care for historic perspectives, but this book really came alive for me. I grew up in Hunt County and now live in Dallas County, so essentially he's describing my back yard. It's a great combination of science, naturalist perspective, and personal emotional input. It's definately a great book for anyone's library.
Inspiring, unsettling, thought-provoking, and generally just a good read.......2007-03-28
A great book to understand the natural history of the Blackland Prairie region of North Texas! It is a must-read for rural landowners, naturalists, educators, and even yard-watering suburbanites with foundation problems. It will help you know, love, and comprehend our shifting soils and other natural elements around us. I've recommended Matt White's book to many locals as a great read, including my book club in the Dallas area. It gave me a new and insightful view of the fascinating land around us. Anyone who says North Texas and the Dallas area is flat, ugly, and treeless should read this book... and see if you look at the land around you just a bit differently.
Incredible book about tragedy and hope on the Blackland Prairie.......2006-04-12
The Blackland Prairie, part of Texas' tallgrass prairies, once occupied 12 million acres of Texas, from the Red River near the Oklahoma border, south through Dallas, Waco, Temple, and Austin down to San Antonio. The tall prairie grasses and flowers created extremely rich soils, which led to most of the Blackland Prairie being plowed for agriculture.
Perhaps only one-tenth of one percent of Texas' beautiful Blackland Prairie remains in native hay meadows or places too rocky to plow, and many of these endangered places are slowly disappearing over time to the plow and development.
There are people who care about the prairie and search for remnants of the Blackland, hoping to find a special piece of what was and experience it as those who first came to Texas did and maybe even protecting some of the ever decreasing gems that remain. Matt White is one of these people, and he tells an incredible tale of both destruction and hope in Prairie Time - A Blackland Portrait.
Matt recounts the natural and human history of the Blackland Prairie, mixing information about settlers, families, Native Americans, animals, birds, and native plants in a very readable account. He tells heartwarming stories of people appreciating and protecting their prairies with land trusts and local governments, and heartbreaking stories of prairies being plowed and destroyed.
As author of Birds of Northeast Texas, Matt also relates the plight of the grassland birds that make the prairie their home and how the destruction of most of the Blackland Prairie has affected them. The tragedy of the Prairie Chicken and the declining populations of Le Conte's Sparrow, Bell's Vireo, and other grassland birds raise the alarm of habitat loss and the affect of the prairie's destruction upon wildlife.
Matt also lets us experience the excitement of finding out about previously unknown hay meadows and, along with other prairie friends (many of whose names which you may recognize and know), meeting the owners and seeing the prairie remnant for the first time. He also describes many of the protected prairies, telling us about the special native plants, animals, and birds that live there.
Matt ends with a statement of hope, inspiring us to protect as many pieces of the Blackland Prairie that remain and that more rare gems of native prairie may be waiting for us to discover them.
Prairie Time - A Blackland Portrait by Matt White is highly recommended, especially to anyone interested in prairies, native plants, birds, wildlife, natural and Texas history, environmentalism, and conservation.

Customer Reviews:
Daniels' Running Formula.......2007-10-15
I have raced for more than 30 years. This book is great for both the beginner and seasoned runner. It explains the different types of training and explains when each training type should be incorporated into your season (or schedule).
great expansion on original book by J.Daniels.......2007-07-29
This book has more for the beginning runner as well as experienced runners. Great approach with thoughts on all aspects of training and a data-driven 'by the numbers' approach that is just great.
Finally I found it........2007-07-18
I read some books on trainnig, but I had never felt I could make my own trainning plans or make modifications to standard plans. This book gives you the elements to adapt plans to your own goals, no matter you are a new runner or an elite one.
If you want to understand what, when, why and how fast to train, this book will help you.
Great book for intermediate marathoners.......2007-07-10
Just got this book and read it cover to cover. It is a great book for those who want to take marathoning to a new level. Recommended for those who have completed at least one marathon and are striving for a Boston Qualifier or beyond. The training plans in the book accomodate runners who are running around 40 miles per week up to and beyond 70 miles per week. I beleive anyone (fast or slow) who is serious about improving their marathon performance could benefit from the suggestions and research provided in this book.
Science for Running Nerds.......2007-05-22
If you're a running nerd, or into exercise physiology, or are just wanting to know more about how to effectively train, then this should be in your library. It's a bit technical without putting you to sleep and it's full of great training ideas as well as lots of charts and data to help figure out what pace and how you should train. It has three plans(red, blue and gold) if you want to skip ahead and start training and then figure out why you're doing strides one day and actually resting during the week. Definately worth every penny.

She makes a whole batch of new friends, and even finds herself winning the unwritten contest to woo the prince at the boys' school next door. But one girl, Honey, undermines all her efforts. When Calypso and Prince Freddy end up in the tabloids and everything seems set to go down the drain, it's Calypso's parents and sense of humor that save her from utter humiliation.

Pulling Princes.......2006-05-21
I really loved this book. I thought it gave good insight as to how boarding school really is. It was funny and cute, adding quirky bits like with the nuns, and the character's main friend being a girl named star who is the daughter of a rock star. And yet, it also had empowering parts too, like when the main character, Calypso, becomes friends with the more popular girls, and gains a place for herself, as well as some new friends she never would have expected.
Teen chick lit.......2005-11-15
I've read some of Tyne O'Connell's Red Dress Ink (adult chick lit) books and they were enjoyable. I thought I'd give this book a try thinking it might be as good or maybe even better.
I thought wrong. I didn't enjoy this boko as much as the many other teen books I've read in the past. This was fun, but boring also.
My suggestion... pass it up and read a book by another author, such as Sarah Mlynowski's 'Bras & Broomsticks' or any of Meg Cabot's teen reads.

this book has great pulling power.......2006-08-14
Calypso Kelly is the American freak at the prestigious St. Augustine's Boarding School for Ladies in England. Everything from her accent to her her lack of pedigree is mocked, but she's determined that this year will be different, and she'll finally fit in with the popular girls. She starts by pretending that her mother's hot (but gay) PA is her boyfriend, and, to her surprise, it actually works. It gains her respect, and, in the long run, she gains friends. But one girl, Honey O' Hare, is still determined to bring Calypso down, so when she's caught in the tabloids kissing Prince Freddie, England's most eligible bachelor, a lot more than her dress is hanging by a safety pin. Calypso must do all she can to save her reputation. Anyone who has ever felt like a misfit or had someone out to undermine them will surely relate to Calypso. This book is funny, fast-paced, and bound to have you reaching eagerly for the next installment.
Ehh-.......2006-02-08
This book wasn't all that. It's certaintly not worth your money. But hey, if your interested in fencing than it's should deffinately read it. But other than that, it's only good for a short read to fill up your time. It's not worth buying though.
THE END.......2005-07-10
this book was great! though many reviews have said, "its a bit confusing". i say "who says it shouldn't be?" when is the life of a teenager not "a little bit confusing"? it isn't very realistic, but that's what's fun about it. as nice as it is 2 read about realistic events, it's always fun 2 read something funny and "out there" once and a while.
after I read AND loved it, i recommended it 2 several of my friends. they all loved too. but in the end, it had us saying,
"WE WANT MORE!! THAT CAN'T BE THE END!!" and it isn't. it's just the beginning of a series that will b great. the other books are called, 'STEALING PRINCES' and 'DUELING PRINCES'. so b sure to check those out as well.
pull off the shelf!.......2005-02-23
This was such a great book. Calypso Kelly is one of the few Americans at the posh british boarding school she attends. She has few friends: everyone loves to make fun of her accent. On top of all that, she is one of the few fencers, and she has no experience "pulling", or kissing, boys. Calypso takes things into her own hands, pretending that "gay Jay", her mom's PA, is her boyfriend in the States. This gives her an in with the most popular girls, and she is getting along quite nicely. She even attracts the attention of Prince Freddie, a royal! When the others discover this, one of the girls goes on the warpath, seeking to destroy Calypso's budding relationship. When she ends up in the tabloids, kissing Prince Freddie, her life gets even more crazy. Will Calypso be able to maintain her new friendships, defeat the evil girl, and win her prince?
Not Developed.......2005-02-08
This could've been a great book if it had been developed. I became extremely confused because the writer kept jumping from one event to another. The main character, Calypso, is a teenage leper when suddenly she becomes extremely popular and finds out that it just so happens that the head popular girl is actually being mistreated by a fellow popular girl who is the real horrible person who gives the whole group a bad name. Without enough transitional filler to make it understandable, it was just a jumble of nonsense. Another disappointing part is that she falls in the love with, of course, a prince who we never know for sure if he is a jerk or a nice guy. There's too much guesswork that shouldn't be in there.
Ultimately, after I finished reading it, I ran around the house screaming "I want my life back!"
