Book Description
The study of Spain's early modern economic history has been dominated by interest in her New World empire -- by images of galleons returning home laden with gold, silver, and precious stones. But wealth generated from the New World accounted for only a small percentage of total income for the crown and private citizens alike. The vast majority derived from the Spain's agrarian economy, of which wool production formed an important part. Large-scale herding supported tens of thousands of families at all social levels and allowed a profitable use of land that was unsuited to agriculture. For centuries, wool production and trade arguably generated more foreign income than any other component of the economy. Even after the development of Spain's New World empire, the wool trade remained a crucial source of foreign exchange.
In Spain's Golden Fleece, Carla Rahn Phillips and William D. Phillips, Jr., offer the first authoritative history of Spain's vital wool industry. They show how wool was crucial both to Spain's domestic income and to the flourishing European textile industries that depended on the incomparable wool of Spanish Merino sheep. The authors begin by offering a broad and long-term look at the growth, dominance, and decline of the herding economy. They explain the components of wool production, from herding to shearing to preparing the wool for market. And they examine the evolution of the woolen textile industry in Spain and the export trade in raw wool.
The magnitude of Spanish wool production and its significance for the economy of Spain and the rest of Europe have never before been fully documented and analyzed. In following the rise, flourishing, and decline of Spanish wool production and the wool trade, Spain's Golden Fleece offers an important new perspective on the course of European economic history.

not much content.......2003-02-11
This book was much thinner than I had expected and is devoid of color except for a few pages in the middle. Not much for the whopping price.
An invaluable aid in teaching, recommended for students........1999-04-28
As an instructor in Scientific Art at the University of Washington for the past 15 years, I have found the 1st and 2nd editions of SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION to be an invaluable aid in my teaching. It has been an excellent resource that I can recommend to my students, both beginning and advanced.
To the beginner it brings step-by-step examples and basic information of materials; to the advanced it brings inspiration and further goals. The richness and diversity of illustration examples, both student and professional, give it an especially unique and appealing quality.
It deserves to be on every artist's shelf, both those specifically interested in the field of science art, as well as those who want to further their basic knowledge of realist art skills.
Kathyrn D. Barker
A valuable resource to both students and teachers........1999-04-13
As a professor at the only small college in the U.S. to offer a degree in scientific illustration, it is extremely valuable for my students to have access to a text that exposes them to the various techniques and applications associated with scientific illustration. Phyllis Wood's Scientific Illustration provides students with both a basic overview of the field, including introductory rendering techniques, and an in-depth discussion of the many applications of the work, such as presentation graphics and exhibit design.
The well-organized contents begin with traditional approaches and media, and end with an excellent chapter on computer applications. The numerous illustrations do not merely supplement the text, but act as lessons in themselves. Many of the best illustrators in the field are represented in the illustration credits.
My students and I are very grateful this resource is available to supplement the material presented in the classroom.

A real benchside reference guide.......2007-03-26
Is a good reference for tying techniques.
I would have preferred if I could find the entire dressings and not only the hundred plus one techniques to tie wings or whatever but probably it would have become too big.
To be improved in CDC use.
Excellent book.......2007-03-09
It's an excellent guide on how to do different tying techniques.
Well worth the price.
I would recommend it to other fly tyers.
The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference.......2007-02-15
Excellent description of common tying techniques; easy to understand - even for beginners. Important, it's not a book for tying complete flies - it explains the techniques and materials => You need a second book!
The fly tier's Bible.......2007-02-08
This is another MUST HAVE!.This book has a place on my tying bench. There are no patterns in this book. It takes every tying technique there is and has at least two ways of doing the technique you are looking for.
This is another MUST HAVE book for the tier..

Product Description
TYING FLIES THE PARALOOP WAY
The first book to explain a whole new style of tying trout flies, Paraloop Way. Every once in a while a really new idea comes along in the world of tying trout flies. Ian Moutter, with his detailed development and step-by-step sequence photos of what he calls the paraloop method, has developed an entirely new technique. The paraloop, like a parachute fly, rides low in the water (where the fish are). But unlike the parachute, the versatile paraloop method can be used to tie a whole range of traditional fly patterns in an entirely new way. Moutter outlines this method in detailed instructions and step-by-step photographs. A rare case of a truly innovative fly tying book. 275 color photographs, 26 illustrations.
IMITATIVE FLY TYING
This comprehensive manual introduces dozens of new fly tying techniques. It covers most areas of imitative fly tying, including nymphs, larvae, pupae, emerging flies, adult flies, and spent spinners.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A must have reference.......2001-05-21
For both the novice and the expert, this is a great book to have while traveling, walking in the woods or biking. Even in the classroom studying the native plants, this easy to read reference will add to the education of students. Referenced by color of flower, there are over 100's of photos of plants in their native habitate along with pictures of their leaves. There is more than just a botanical description. Whimsy folklore about the plants will enhance the readers enjoyment. Ever wonder why the forget-me-not got its name and why the Thistle is the national Scottish symbol? For a quick reference and review of native flowers you will be glad you got ROADSIDE PLANTS AND FLOWERS.
A user friendly source book.......2000-03-08
good photographs and information for fast identification of the familiar plants we see so often---and others not so familiar. The author includes interesting information about the specimens making it more interesting than the usual botanical guides. Very useful to an out-of-state traveler
over rated guide book.......1999-12-22
This was a disappointment, especially when the Title promises so much more. Standard Audubon's still provide the best. We wished more unfortunately received much the less

Life at James Patrick's house is a party that never ends--and he hates it. Grandma Mary was the caring matriarch who previously had held his small family together in a haven of comfort and order, a safe place where no one ever had to grow up. But now that she has died, Mam, his childlike and formerly introverted mother, has become enraptured in newfound self-discovery. After entering a contest and winning a country house, she invites a crowd of young wannabe poets, musicians, and lost souls to move in. All-night fun-a-thons, piano and guitar music, readings, arguments, and cookouts in the snow ensue. "Isn't this so fun?" says Dear Pap, JP's sweet-natured but "mentally challenged" father, as he surveys the scene from the roof (where he hangs out next to life-size Nativity figures). Mam's happy dream of "a face at every window" has come true. But JP wants stasis and order. He's miserable with these people he considers pretentious lunatics in his kitchen, his bedroom, his closet, and he wants his parents back for himself. Even worse, Mam is getting far too cozy with her arrogant friend Dr. Mike, and when she returns from a trip pregnant JP finds it impossible to face her.
Han Nolan, winner of the 1997 National Book Award for Dancing on the Edge, creates complex characters and an outlandish household in this richly textured novel about a young man learning lessons of life, love, and acceptance. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
James Patrick (JP) O’Brien’s once safe and secure world quickly unravels with the death of his beloved grandmother. Grandma Mary had always been the guiding hand of the O’Brien family, lovingly raising his mentally challenged Pap and allowing Mam to remain free of adult responsibility. Soon after Grandma Mary’s death, Mam wins a farmhouse in an essay contest and insists on sharing her good fortune with various neighborhood outcasts. As JP sees both Pap and himself being replaced in his mother’s life by others, his anger pushes his family and friends further away. It’s not until he begins to understand that he must learn to accept differences, human frailties, and the randomness of life that he recaptures his happiness and begins to grow as a person.
Customer Reviews:
Weird Individuals Form a Family.......2007-07-05
JP has always known his family was unusual. His father is mentally retarded and his mother is often sickly and thinks she might die. His father and mother are like children when they are together. JP's grandmother is the one who holds the family together, and the four of them live together in a happy home.
Then JP's grandmother dies unexpectedly when he is fifteen, and the safety of his world shatters. Without his grandmother there for stability, things deteriorate into chaos. JP, who thrives on routine and the expected, is more and more uncomfortable every day.
Things get worse. JP's mother is spending a great deal of time with the doctor who treated her the most recent time she was in the hospital, and JP is convinced they are having an affair. When JP's mother wins an old farmhouse in an essay contest, she uproots JP and his father and the three of them move in. But they aren't the only ones to move there. Bobbi, a neighbor of theirs whose father beats her, joins them. There are few people JP hates worse than Bobbi. One of those people he hates worse, though, may just be his friend Tim's older brother Larry, a former drug addict whose family doesn't speak to him anymore. JP's mother also has Larry move in with them.
Soon the entire house is filled with weird people, who disrupt JP's routine and borrow his things without asking. He can't stand this life and can't stand the way he feels about everything. But is there any way for him to fit in with this new family?
I liked all of the different characters in this book and the ways JP found to relate to them. I also liked how the emphasis of the story was entirely on JP's home life, and his school life wasn't discussed at all.
I thought JP's mother was incredibly insensitive. I couldn't believe she didn't see something was wrong with her son and didn't make an effort to make him more comfortable in his own home.
A Face in Every WIndow.......2005-07-16
Even though JP is bitter about everything his mom did, he learns to accept it in the end, which leaves you with a warm feeling. I like all the interesting characters that live in JP's house, but I think the book is too long with all the events that happen, that doesn't really have any meaning to me. But this is a great, touching book about love and acceptance that everyone should read.
Knitting Backwards.......2002-02-05
The story is about a young boy called JP whose life falls apart after his grandmther's death, but chaos really starts to heat up when they win an old farmhouse. Soon the house is ffilled with people he can not stant they are against all the morals he believees a person shold have. So at first JP defies his mother and ehr group of friends, then he tries to fit in but either way he cannot. Everything JP holds dear and dependalble unraveld withen the firdays at his new home so he is left with nothing but the bare threads of his once normal life. While this happened his mother and her group of lost friends are starting to weave the threads belonging in ther lives and to find themselves. The books strength is that the book grabs the floor benth you and there is no cushio to soften the fall on the hard really on the issues of love.

Great book about real-life struggles.......2001-07-03
This book is really well written. It's mainly about a teenager named James-Patrick and the problems he faces in his everyday life after his grandmother, who held the family together, died. His father is mentally retarded. They move into a large house after his grandmother dies, and his mother invites "weird" people (according to JP) to come live with the family. JP can't stand the chaos in the house with all the people there. Especially since he's a really good student, and his goal is to be the Valdictorian of his high school class. Over time his relationships with these people improve. This book was really good. It touched on things that many teenagers face in everyday life. This kind of stuff happens to everyone, and not just when a relative or close friend dies. Personally, I've felt like this a lot in life, just because I want order, like JP. This book shows that just because people are different, we can't alienate them. They're people too, and they deserve respect. I'll definitely end up reading this book again.
