Book Description
Designed for courses in corporate finance, this text is a detailed description of the valuation process, providing an integrated, comprehensive method for valuing assets, firms, and securities across a wide variety of industries. The presentation begins with a review of financial and accounting techniques, proceeds with a presentation of the valuation process, leading towards the development of pro-forma financial statements and the translation of these projections into values. A key strength of this text is teaching students how to use pro forma financial statements as a basis for valuation.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent valuation book that should be well known by a wider audience.......2007-02-08
Simon Benninga's and Oded Sarig's "Corporate Finance: A Valuation Approach" (CFaVA) is one of those secret texts that true insiders cherish while other less efficient or significant works capture limelight.
"CFaVA" is comparable to the McKinsey group authors Koller, Goedhart, Wessels's "Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies" and also Aswath Damodaran's "Investment Valuation: Tools and Techniques for Determining the Value of Any Asset" [Full disclosure: I've taught graduate Corporate Valuation with both texts].
Benninga and Sarig's work is excellent because it is lean while not oversimplified. The key chapter of estimating discount rates is the finest one-chapter treatment of the subject I've seen in my career, and should be required reading for any M&A or LBO banker or PE associate. The chapter on valuing by multiples is also useful for relative value and comparative scenarios for deal-makers.
Chapter 12 covers convertible securities, and it would be unfair to say it is bad simply because it is compressed and incomplete (entire libraries have been written on the subject of convertible bond valuation), but also appears out of place in the content of the book until you realize that the random elements of a stock price going forward in time intersect with capital structure choices and enterprise value, so the connection and recursive element of valuation is made at once explicit with an example.
An excellent book that should be well known by a wider audience.
Ground Up Valuation Techniques.......2002-01-18
If you are new to corporate finance valuation this book will take you to the next level. Provides step by step instruction on how to value companies. Covers Excel techniques with easy to follow examples. Covers 1 full semester at most business schools.
An ideal introduction to company valuation.......2001-09-21
This book offers a very simple introduction to evaluation of companies prior to investing. The DCF method is primarily used. There is a common thread running through the chapters which makes the book easy to understand. Its not verbose, which adds to its attractiveness. But, the readers should remember that this is only an introduction, and some other advanced book like Copeland's is needed to build upon the ideas presented in the book.
A Solid Introductory Valuation Text.......2000-12-18
This book does a good job of logically explaining the step-by-step method of corporate valuation. Benninga and Sarig do a good job of focusing on the practical tools of finance. I only wish the DCF examples were less simplistic. A substantial amount of additional work is needed to apply these models to real world firms.
Fantastic book.......2000-05-22
This book serves as an excellent introduction to and/or refresher on valuation techniques. The entire valuation process (primarily DCF) is broken down into a series of steps, each of which gets its own complete chapter. Each chapter is well written and builds on its predecessors.
A particular strength of the book is the authors' reference to Excel functions and which ones are useful in valuation models. This book is not just theory; there are concrete "how to" examples throughout. Once you've finished this book, you can do more than cite valuation theory: you can build valuation models.
One of the best finance books I've ever read.

GO TO LATHERLAND.COM AND GET THIS FOR $14.95.......2004-10-03
I typed in soap making on Google toolbar and found this by Elaine C. White on that website for $14.95, considerably less than Amazon. This is unusual as Amamzon usually is cheapest, not this time. AND they have them IN STOCK.

I wish read bat how can I do it?
Wow! A great book.......1999-01-07
Man, if you want to make it, and it's got honey or bee's wax in it, then this is your book. Adhesives, candles, metal casting, wine, lotions, soap, ... you name it, this book has it. It even has one of the best process descriptions for making honey wine (mead) that I've ever seen, better even than those given by the "experts". This book is a gem.

The Best Galapagos Guide Book.......2005-10-26
After 6 trips to the Galapagos with University courses, this is by far my favorite guide book. The information in the book is clear, concise, and accurate. The photographs are excellent. Most important, locating the entries for the plants and animals that you encounter on the hikes is quick and easy. My two favorite Ecuadorian guides in the Galapagos Islands both carry only this book.
the only wildlife book for your trip to the Galapagos.......2004-07-14
I've been to the Galapagos with a few copies of each of the other books available for the trip and a University class of biologists and geologists. Between us we had all the choices, and we all tried all of them. This book was hands-down the favorite of the group. It was the most authoritative, the easiest to use, and the most fun to read. I recommend it to anyone traveling to the Enchanted Islands, along with Beak of the Finch of course, and also Evolution's Workshop.
Book Description
With 1,500 full-color illustrations and charts, and a fresh new design, Chapman is the standard text. "This...classic reference used by boating schools and recommended by the Coast Guard Auxiliary covers every imaginable topic related to both powerboats and sailing ships...information is presented in an easy-to-understand text and a user-friendly design."--Publishers Weekly.
Customer Reviews:
Nautical standard.......2006-11-07
This book has long been a nautical standard among small craft owners. It is packed full of information for boat owners and those who love the sea.
"Front, Bow! Back, Stern!" .......2006-07-28
CHAPMAN'S PILOTING AND SEAMANSHIP is one of the half-dozen or so "essential" technical texts that any sailor should own. Coming into it's 65th edition in September 2006, CHAPMAN'S is the only book that offers serious competition to THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP as an overall guide to sailing fundamentals.
Unlike Rousmaniere's book however, CHAPMAN'S is just as applicable to power boating, and because it is updated much more frequently, it's information on changeable topics such as boating regulations and new technologies, among others, is far more current---CHAPMAN'S is in its 65th incarnation, ANNAPOLIS in its seven-year-old third version (Where's the Fourth Edition?).
Did I say "competition"? Actually, the two volumes complement each other, and both are absolutely crucial for the serious skipper.
a new look at chapmans .......2006-07-03
still one of the best books available, on small craft handling.
--- would prefer the older edition , as it was more portable !
and much of the new material will be dated before the year is out!
---this is a volumne at once , serious , and readable,
many an old trick , well preserved , well presented make it quite useful for nearly all navigational tasks,
did remark , a lot of typos , and was surprised , but then this is the cyber era !? so it goes !? --- a real tool !, however!
Chapman's a Bible for Boaters.......2006-03-02
Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship is required reading for anyone
involved with boating. The Coast Guard Auxiliary uses this book for a reference tool for their courses along with applicable CG Publication. The book is heavy though, get a soft bound edition if possible.
A MUST FOR NEW BOATERS AND A GOOD REFERENCE FOR ALL.......2005-06-20
I just replaced my 54th edition with the 64th. Much of it is the same but much has also changed in the past 16 years. If you are new to boating this book might literally save your life. If you're a seasoned skipper you'll find yourself using it for a reference more often than you'd imagine. Covers every thing you need to know for boating in either sail or power. This book is "the Boater's Bible". If for no other reason than learning the "rules of the waterway" Chapman's is worth it's weight in gold.

Caribbean Culinary Dictionary.
Although the Caribbean region, the West Indies, is one group of islands, their remoteness has caused each island to reflect the ways of whoever conquered them in the past. The major conquerors were the English, the Spanish, the Dutch and the French. Each island's blend also represented the ethnic background of imported laborers to work their back-breaking sugar fields. These workers came from India, Asia and Africa and each brought their eating habits and usually some seeds for the future. Additionally, the Amerindians, or original inhabitants, had simple fare which mixed in with the ways of conquering cultures and in-coming laborers. This three-way juncture created foods and ways available no other way. The book contains some recipes.
Fruits, often beautiful and exotic, grow abundantly on the islands, and the book goes into some detail about many of them. A rum factory is usually found on many islands, for it is an important byproduct of sugar, so is the manufacture of a local beer. The many fruits lend to signature Rum Punches. Fruit shows up frequently in main dish recipes, as well.
In a land of islands, it stands to reason fish and seafood figure highly in the Caribbean region diet. Herbs and spices grow abundantly too which causes the people to depend upon them for medicinal reasons and bush teas in addition to seasoning food. West Indies grown nutmeg, mace, ginger and garlic add to the flair of local cuisines. Chile peppers, coconut and island-grown spices dress up local foods, while basic beans, rice and tubers balance a rich diet.
Look up festivals and carnivals which are big in the islands, some named "Crop Over," celebrating the completion of the sugar harvest. Others are cook-offs and those associated with the Lenten season. A quick catch-up is the book's green inserts entitled, "Don't Miss," which line out sights as well as foods to try. Some random samplings:
Dutch:
Curacao, Aruba, Bonnaire and Sint Maarten - Dutch cheeses, iguana soup, Indonesian and Papiamento cuisines.
French:
Guadeloupe, Martinique and Haiti, French-influenced with wines from France, spicy Creole fish dishes, fresh baked goods. Hatian music is especially lilting.
English:
Jamaica, ackee & salt fish, jerk pork with recipe
Barbados, its coo-coo and flying fish
Trinidad, roti, hot curries, callalloo soup, cou-cou (cuscous),
Nassau, conch
Spanish:
Cuba, pizza, jamon (ham) chorizo sausage and onion
Puerto Rico, sofrito
The Food Directory is broken down into upscale, pubs and mid-range, fast food/cheap eateries, street food and bars. Catchy island music is to be savored on each island from Jamaica's Bob Marley to Trinidad's Mighty Sparrow.
The book's Fit and Healthy chapter discusses your health and what to look out for particularly if allergies, diabetic issues and diarrhea intervene.
Just reading World Food Caribbean's "Eat your Words," quick 30-page Culinary Dictionary will put the visitor way ahead of the Caribbean food game. This handy, small, informational book with outstanding photography is a must for your next West Indian trip.
Enjoy!

Book Description
Ron is watcher, it seems. He watches his pick-up basketball team–five guys trying to fit together on the court. He watches Dawn on the dance floor, and that tiny star tattoo on her shoulder. He watches Darby run, her short legs all sweat and muscle. He watches his friends veer off–and up–into popularity. He watches his dad move in with his grandmother and make do. But he’s more than a watcher: He’s a hustler on the court, a free-thrower, a poet, a poker player, a rule breaker, a loving grandson, a runner, and a ruthless competitor in those eight laps around the track–the 3200 meter. In nine interwoven stories, award-winning author Rich Wallace brings a small-town high school to life through the sharp, spare voice–and the heart-pounding defeats and triumphs–of an athlete.
