At the start of the twenty-first century, the Japanese financial system is undergoing a major transformation. This process is spurred by a sense of crisis. Dominated by large institutions, the Japanese banking system has suffered from serious problems with non-performing loans since the early 1990s, when the Japanese stock market and urban real estate market both crashed. Delays in responding to these twin asset bubbles, by both regulatory authorities and the banks themselves, made matters worse and led to a banking crisis in late 1997 and early 1998. Not anticipating this setback, in late 1996 the Japanese government inaugurated its Big Bang of comprehensive financial deregulation designed to complete the process of creating `free, fair, and open financial markets'. Beginning in late 1998 and early 1999 the government finally embarked on a major rehabilitation of the Japanese banking system, including making available some Yen 60 trillion (approximately USD 500 billion) of government funds to recapitalize fifteen major banks, adequately fund the deposit insurance program, and write off the bad loans of nationalized or bankrupted banks. One result of this reform process is that the Ministry of Finance (MOF), which dominated Japanese financial system policy for most of the post-war period, has been stripped of most of its former regulatory powers.
The purpose of this book is to describe, analyze, and evaluate the process that is transforming the Japanese financial system. The chapters address various issues relating to the transition of the Japanese financial system from a bank-centered and relationship-based system to a competitive market-based system. Questions taken up include: Why did Japanese banks get into such serious trouble? Why has the MOF lost its immense power? How will the Big Bang's financial deregulation further change the Japanese financial system, including the huge government financial institutions and postal savings system? What are some of the broader implications of this transition?
The book is divided into three parts: Part I considers the origins of Japan's banking crisis; Part II focuses on five particularly important areas of major actual and potential changes; Part III addresses the effects of the Big Bang, including its potential systemic externalities. Taken together, this book offers an unusually up-to-date, comprehensive and thorough appraisal and evaluation of the profound changes occurring in Japan's financial system.

While most texts focus on selection and psychological measurement to the exclusion of classification, these volumes summarize the major theories and research findings in both areas and provide a thorough treatment of classification processes. This is the first text providing more than a chapter on classification since Cronbach and Gleser's historic work in 1965. Cecil D. Johnson and Joseph Zeidner discuss the central topics involved in the practical prediction of job performance, including validity and utility models and research strategies and designs. Based on their analysis, they introduce a new theory, the differential assignment theory, and illustrate the mathematical principles that govern its use in personnel classification. Throughout, the authors are concerned with the realistic applications of specific procedures to maximize both selection and classification efficiency. This volume begins with an overview that describes the major issues and highlights important findings and conclusions. Volume 2 begins with a taxonomy of personnel selection, classification, and placement--going on to address the measurement of classification effectiveness and ways to improve it. The use of model sampling and simulation as a tool for measuring utility, potentially available from personnel classification, is described. This volume concludes with a glossary and list of references.

Development of planted forests in tropical and subtropical countries is accelerating to satisfy the ever-growing global demand for wood products. Indeed, it is expected that within 20 years half of all wood fibre in the world will be sourced from plantations, of which more than half are in the tropics and subtropics. As well as intensively managed industrial wood plantations, trees are increasingly being planted as part of farming systems - to control erosion and rehabilitate degraded lands and forests. Active community involvement in tree planting as part of rural development is now widespread and welcome. Plantation Forestry in the Tropics provides an overview that sets plantation silviculture in the wider context of development processes and their social, environmental and ecological impacts. The structure and approach of previous editions have been retained but every chapter has been comprehensively revised and updated. Two new chapters, one on clonal forestry, the other on ecological restoration, have also been added although the central theme remains the silviculture that underpins successful industrial planted forests. Overall, the book provides an up-to-date account of silvicultural practices, some of the socio-economic essentials, and the key role tree planting now plays in natural resource management and improving rural livelihoods in the tropics. Contemporary issues such as full stakeholder participation and sustainable management practices in planted forests are also addressed. The authors have drawn on their field experience from over 40 tropical and sub-tropical countries, and readers will find examples from Africa, Latin America, tropical Asia and the Pacific. Both the historical context and recent developments are presented, and examples are drawn from industrial plantations, rural development plantings, agroforestry and tree planting for soil protection and rehabilitation of degraded forests. Students, professional foresters, development specialists, and all with an interest in tropical forest management will find this a valuable reference text.

Essential Reading for Human Ecologists.......2001-01-09
This book draws together a huge range of data on Native American plant and animal use and environmental management in pre-Columbian times. The chapters are by leading authorities, and are comprehensive enough to inform the scholar, while well-written and accessible enough to be valuable to the beginning student. In recent years, publishers have given us a plethora of badly informed books on traditional Native American resource management. Most of them either portray Native Americans as ecological saints or as wasteful destroyers. To such works, the present book is an ideal antidote. It discusses the major known cases in which Native American cultures intensively modified the landscape to produce highly productive, long-sustained agricultural systems. The authors wisely refrain from pontificating on the saint vs. savage issue, but the implication is clear: Native American land management systems were highly diverse but usually sustainable, at least in the medium term, and often exceedingly complex and sophisticated. Notable and very valuable are chapters reviewing the natural vegetation of each region. These not only provide necessary background for the specific case studies; they are also wonderful review articles in their own right. In particular, the chapters on South America bring together materials previously accessible only through many scattered sources in several languages. This book is an absolute "must read" for ecological anthropologists and ethnobiologists. It seems to me to be only slightly less indispensable for ecologists, environmentalists, and environmental historians. On the whole, the book is not action-oriented; it provides data, not applications. Charles Peters' chapter is a welcome exception. While sympathizing with the authors' overall goal of providing "just the facts, ma'am" (as Joe Friday used to say), I am glad Dr. Peters took the next step, and I rather wish that at least some of the other authors had gone farther in that direction.

This book is totally unique, I have never seen another guide like it. The author does not just focus on the big cities she covers smaller cities as well and in depth. The book covers well known historic neighborhoods in the Western states, with highly informative text. I found the book hard to put down. Being from the Houston area I was impressed with how well the author had researched Houston's best neighborhoods and I also appreciated the photographs of homes from each neighborhood, it gave the reader a visual and a feel for the houses in the neighborhood, I really cannot say enough good things about this book, it even maps the neighborhoods and shows the reader where they can find the museum homes. It truly is a field guide in the best sence and I highly recommend it, I have been waiting for the Eastern states for several years now, I hope that it gets done, because if it is half as good as this book I will be the first to buy it.

A beautifully done baedeker of historic information on settlement patterns and architecture of the American West. As in their other books, Lee and McAlester weave local historiography with the creation of venacular architecture into entertaining narrative.
There are two apparent shortcomings: a relative dearth of good photos--for a quasi-reference work, there is simply not enough visual stimulation, and a highly cryptic reference system wherein the photo captions are not cross referenced properly with the notes. Otherwise, this is a book to be valued by those with an interest in housing and architecture.

If a mad scientist somehow crossed Hunter S. Thompson with Dorothy Parker, the resultant writer stomping across the American scene would be something like Cynthia Heimel. She's smart, she's observant, she's outspoken, and she writes essays that make you bust a gut. You want opinions? She's got 'em. On nearly every subject. She's not afraid to offend. And the weird thing is, she happens to make a lot of sense.

This is the best Heimel book I have read so far...witty, insightful, touching, sometimes sad, sometimes hilarious, always honest. Stories about homeless dogs, sick fathers, mean mothers, pregnant friends, politics - something for almost everybody. It's worth a read.
Good Insight in Short Chewable Chunks.......2002-01-25
I liked it. Granted the book was dated but suprisingly, the views were still very applicable. What I got most from the book is how little things have changed in almost 10 years. Heimel states some views about Clinton when he first got in office that could have been made about him now. She definitely is a gifted observer of the human odyssey and condition. She doesn't seem to be able to be satisfied by any condition of life, which as a keen observer of life, is a must (I guess). Sardonic, witty and colorful. Pulitzer prize winning prose...no. Fun and interesting point of view...yes. A good read with some interesting insights.

This book was definetly one of the best books I've ever read. I took the subject of abuse and displayed it exactly how it is. I think it will wake up young readers to the ongoing cycles of abusive realtionships and hopefully keep them from getting themselve into the situation. It's definetly a page turner.
