This critical review of the status of in situ bioremediation, which is used to clean up contaminated groundwater aquifers and surface soils, have been organized according to possibilities and restrictions. Possibilities are based on present knowledge and indicate that in situ bioremediation can achieve decontamination of aquifers and soils. Restrictions encompass the scientific, engineering, legal, and other questions that stand in the way of successful development and application of in situ bioremediation.

Possibilities and restrictions are critically reviewed for five major areas:
Microbiology- The fundamental issues are what can microorganisms biodegrade and how can we allow them to do it? This section provides a state-of-the-art review of biodegradation capabilities. It also identifies factors, such as toxicity and low solubility, that need to be overcome before in situ bioremediation can be used reliably.
Hydrodynamics-ln situ bioremediation can occur only when the hydrodynamic character of the contaminated site allows the input of materials and the formation of a BAZ. In this section, the ideal hydrodynamic conditions for in situ bioremediation are identified. Then, possible problem areas, such as clogging and non- homogeneity, are evaluated.
Engineering-Details of the in situ technology and related aboveground treatments must be properly engineered. This section critically reviews the approaches used today and those potentially used inthefuture. Deficiencies in knowledge and technology are identified.
Legal and Other-Research, development, and application of in situ bioremediation can be slowed or stopped by a range of legal, economic, and organizational limitations. This section discusses the most important limitations and, in some cases, their solutions.
Research Needs-Despite impressive potential and progress, many technical questions remain to be solved before in situ bioremediation becomes a reliable and accepted tool for hazardous-waste management. This section identifies the most important short- and long- term research needs. In other words, it de- scribes the steps needed to go from today's status to the situation in which the in situ bioremediation community rightfully claims its share of the billions of dollars to be spent on the hazardous-waste market by contributing significantly to the nation's environmental well being.

Although much has been written about bioremediation, this critical review is unique because it is comprehensive, critical, and integrated. This situation was no accident; the organization of the authorship team and the report's contents were designed to achieve each of the three attributes. Combining a good plan, outstanding individuals contributing, and an incredible amount of work, they created a critical review that defines the technical and non-technical Issues that will determine how much of an impact in situ bioremediation makes on solving the world's challenges for cleanup of our legacy of improperly disposed of materials. Readers of this review will find the issues identified and connected. They will have a solid foundation for research, application, or evaluation of in situ bioremediation in the future.

A Worthy Successor to Chandrasekhar's "Stellar Structure".......2003-02-13

"Advanced Stellar Astrophysics" is an exact title for this book. It is an advanced monograph on stellar structure. It is, both in style and substance, strongly reminiscent of Chandrasekhar's work on the same structure. Like Chandrasekhar, Rose works every topic out in his own way, including as much background as he needs (e.g. both his succinct treatments of electron gases and of general relativity). This gives the book a remarkable unity and intelligibility, and is a most welcome change tor the usual run of "advanced monographs" which all too often are half-assimilated hodge-podges of other people's work.

Excellent coverage of a fundamental subject........1999-10-20

This is a great book for anyone interested in advanced stellar phenomena. Easy to read with adequate math rigor, this book is a pleasure to work through. The layout of the book is pleasing to the eye and flows well. Equations are displayed in a spacious and predictable manner which allows quick reference and reduces distractions. Pedagogical discussion is succinct and cogent. Dr. Rose is an excellent teacher and, as usual, Cambridge Press has printed an outstanding book with outstanding attention to detail.

Best Book on Practicle Riding Technique.......2007-09-25

I've read a lot of books on riding over the past several years with the goals of improving my technique and having an overall more enjoyable and safer ride. By far the beset book I've read to date is Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist 2. This book is a very complete analysis of the physics of riding presented in a very understandable format that includes pictures and tips. Understanding the dynamics of traction and how those dynamics change during cornering, braking, and acceleration has really improved my riding and my confidence. While this book is targeted at sport bike riders the information applies to all including Harley-Davidson riders. I highly recommend Twist of the Wrist 2. Note, the first book in the series is also very good but not necessary if you buy the second.

Some info in here is good, but Code really needs to give his readers a bit more credit. I don't need Keith Code to tell me what "available," "constantly," or "hunting" means, all words helpfully defined. I also have a pretty good idea what an "exit" is, thanks. Save yourself some dough and get "Total Control" or "Sport Riding Techniques" both excellent for sport riders.

Understand how to ride your bike, and why the how!.......2007-06-13

A fantastic book that truly unravels the art of riding a sportsbike. It explains in simple terms what happens when you do certain things (eg throttle off), why you should not, what to do to counteract the natural reactions and why this works.

The ability to explain the mechanical laws being applied in such a way that you can understand what happens, and how to use it to your advantage enables you to calmly apply the principles and techniques.

Quite simply the best instructional book I have read.

The FLIRT girls are in a state of frenzy. Fashion Week has arrived in New York City, and suddenly, their worlds have been flipped upside down, as they find themselves mingling with celebrities on a daily basis, and encountering some of the top designers in the fashion world in some of the most peculiar places. But Fashion Week isn't all these interns have to worry about. For school has started, and the girls are working overtime to handle their overdue homework, and FLIRT assignments. But things take a turn for the worst, when Alexa upsets a Sister at her all-girls Catholic School, leading to the removal of her beloved camera - along with a disk containing pictures for her boss; and soon Mel's luck follows suit, when she meets a cute guy in her Writing Workshop class, only to discover that he's not as truthful as he appears. Add to that the fact that Kiyoko's juggling guy problems with her music partner / possible boyfriend, Cody; and Liv is trying to cope with the fact that designers keep stealing her jewelry ideas. Now, the FLIRT interns must work as a team, in an attempt to survive school, and Fashion Week. But as a tabloid reporter from London begins closing in on them, along with Kiyoko's ravenous model-sister, Miko, the girls wonder if they'll ever be able to survive Fashion Week, school, and a full semester of this hectic schedule; or if they'll crash and burn like one of the many fad diets circulating throughout Hollywood.

As with Nicole Clarke's other FLIRT efforts, VIPs brings a certain fabulosity to the table that will certainly leave readers - especially those interested in the fashion industry - grinning from ear to ear. Her discussions regarding different materials, and swatches; as well as the dialogue revolving around jewelry, and the intricacies of creating the perfect fashion are absolutely flawless; while the excitement the girls feel regarding Fashion Week is certainly catching. Unlike the previous FLIRT novels, VIPs delves into the world of name-dropping, which takes away some of the originality it displayed in past installments. However, it also adds a slight piece of familiarity for the reader, making them feel as if they're "in the loop." Clarke has done another wicked job creating a tale that follows four likable girls through the exciting - and oft-times upsetting - world of a fashion magazine, and the many ups and downs that accompany it. Like bubbles from champagne, VIPs will tickle your senses.

FLIRT intern, Kiyoko Katsuda, was utterly ecstatic when her older sister, and super successful model, Miko, came to visit the interns loft in NYC during a runway show. But when she spots the Argentine beauty - and photography expert - Alexa Veron, she feels as if she's struck gold. Alexa's wild mane of hair, bubbly - and oft-times mischievous - personality, and gorgeous skin are absolutely striking. Enough so that Miko feels that Alexa has the potential to become a top model herself. Alexa is unsure of her opinion. She's always been more comfortable behind the camera, shooting subjects, and creating her own works of art, and feels that she'll never be good enough to rock the runway or pose for portraits. But when Miko announces to everyone that she's landed a meeting for Alexa with her own modeling company in Paris, Alexa finds it impossible to turn down a breathtaking trip to France. Packing her belongings, along with the exotic Kiyoko, the two interns find themselves coasting past the Eiffel Tower, and checking out the European hotties located on just about every corner. But it's obvious that not everyday with be as fun. Alexa has various photo shoots booked, and both girls have assignments from FLIRT that will certainly take up a large amount of their time. But assignments go out the window when both girls meet, and fall for, an American model named Lucas, who just happens to be a Casanova with the ladies. His incessant flirting, and Kiyoko's sudden jealousy of Alexa, leave the two girls at each others throats, and in the midst of a catfight that should put them to shame. Refusing to ride on Alexa's coattails, Kiyoko decides to do her own thing while in the city of lights, and soon fins herself face-to-face with a reclusive singer/songwriter, who made a bang on the music scene years ago, then went into hiding, leaving critics and fans alike believing that he was...deceased. Kiyoko is determined to land an interview with the star, and devotes all of her time to sitting around a local patisserie that he frequents. But during all that time, she begins thinking of her treatment towards Alexa, and misses their friendship.

Meanwhile, back in New York City, Melanie and Liv are up to their ears in work, and finding it difficult to keep up with their own growing workloads, while, at the same time, trying to assist staff members with photocopies and assignments that Alexa and Kiyoko usually take on. But FLIRT isn't the only thing keeping the girls occupied. Liv has just sold some of her creations to a local boutique, and is working as hard as possible to fill the order by the deadline. As if that weren't enough, she's attempting to balance school, create costumes for her boyfriend, Eli's, latest film production, and write a killer essay that could possibly land her an apprenticeship with the design company Florentina. Her jealousy is evident in each scene she appears in; and her constant anger towards Alexa only works to make her seem unfriendly and downright nasty, even though die-hard FLIRT fans know that Kiyoko is anything but. Alexa, on the other hand, seems to have toned down her flamboyant personality. In fact, during their stay in Paris, Alexa seems to have taken on a more reserved, quiet, demure persona, that instantly makes the reader question where the "old" Alexa has disappeared to. Don't get me wrong, this "new" Alexa is just as fun as before, but she lacks the sparkle and mischievousness that were once her trademarks. It's enough to make the reader realize that Alexa isn't necessarily happy in front of the camera, and craves to be back behind the camera, clicking away as she photographs subjects of all shapes, sizes, and species. Liv, while always ladylike and sweet, seems to spend more time thinking about herself within the pages of FRENCH TWIST than usual. Her constant me, me, me way of thinking makes it seem as if she has forgotten what friendship is all about, and seems to be using Mel more than ever to accomplish her various tasks, even though she knows that Mel is under an immense amount of pressure herself. Mel still reigns queen of managing to keep it all together. She never loses hope that she'll accomplish what she has set out to do, and her constant ability to help a friend in need, no matter how much it cuts into her own life, only works to make her more appealing and lovable to readers. Of course, it would always be nice to see her show some assertiveness for once, and let the people surrounding her know that she needs help sometimes, as well. Those who have followed the FLIRT series from book one will love the fact that Mel's tumultuous relationship with Emma Lyric's - the interns' housemother - son, Nick, finally comes to a head; but the revelation makes me question whether looose ends are being tied up for a reason - such as the series is coming to an end. Clarke has penned another delicious installment that paves the way for the next masterpiece - LONDON CALLING. FLIRT-ing has never been this much fun!

Excellent Book!.......1999-10-07

Well, i must say that i certainly enjoyed this book. Todd reckons he's just sooo good now he is a model and also dating one too, talk about an ego problem. And simone has some nerve to be dating a high school boy! She must be pretty desperate.It's a real pity that Liz went through all the trouble of changing her looks and wardrobe for that two - faced slime Leona! Don't get me wrong, i think she looks great it just that she spent so much money and what does she get in return? A backstabing unoriginal theif that can't think of her own ideas! My favourite part in this book is the twin switch and when cameron realizes that it is Liz. But i kind of feel sorry for jessica when she has to date two people at once, i mean all she wants to do is persue her modeling career and date someone for his personality. What about maria and enid? I sorta think they shouldn't be so slack to liz after her horrible break up with todd.But overall i thought this was an excellent book and reccomend it to anyone!

First of all Jessica and Elizabeth are interning at Flair, the hottest new fashion magazine around. Jessica is working in the Art Department and Liz is working in the Editorial Department. In this book Elizabeth catches Todd kissing a supermodel named Simone (otherwise known as the Fashion Witch). She flees from the room in tears because of Todd cheating on her. Jessica finally starts her modeling career at Flair, and Enid and Maria won't even talk to Elizabeth because she ignored them. While covering for her boss, Leona Pierson, Liz finds out that her boss is stealing her idea for the magazine. Well I don't want to spoil it for you, but you should definitely read this book! If you'd like to talk about SVH or Sweet Valley Twins write to me! It is one of my favorite Series!
