Why can't people write books about these topics without using deconstructionist gibberish? If you can't be a great stylist, at least try to be clear. I'd have thought Ansell-Pearson would recognize by now that his reader are likely to conclude the obscure style is due to the arguments being so weak.

Nietzsche contra Darwin.......2002-02-22

In a breezy fashion, full barage of paper airplanes overhead this book, one need not agree a whit, usefully connects Nietzsche, Darwin, artificial life, and 'species evolution', past, present, future, in the process setting the record straight on Nietzsche and Darwin. One had thought the virulent extremes twixt the deeper chords of the great postmodern peer were an indication of the confusing Social Darwinist influence of Darwin on philosophers. In fact, one's suspicious are confirmed, that Nietzsche was too sharp to fall for Darwin, and saw the problem with Darwin's theory of natural selection almost at once, albeit mixing his cockeyed briliance with his own confusions about overmen. As everything is turned into a philosophic sausage of late, it might behoove the wielder of average opinions to decide to be a non-Darwinian, if he is a Nietzschean, or else vice versa, or else do so hard thinking about fundamentals. Nietzsche's views are complex, and one need not accept them, to see his point that natural selection can't be the resolution of evolutionary progression. In any case the discussion here was a curious sort of counterpoint to what I was thinking, and quite refreshing, read without conversion, and mindful one can misplace cultural history all too easily in the ceaseless revisionisms of the social phantom. Perhaps the only route to overman is via the Caves of Almora, but at least Nietzsche's wildman mien as Conaan the barbarian is at least topically to the point of the next Big Jump in the evolution of the 'schlemiel'.

Beware anthropomorphizing.......2000-03-26

The first sentence of the introduction reads,"..I question,problematize,overturn,revalue,announce,renounce,advocate,interrogate,affirm,deny,celebrate,critique,the 'tranhuman condition'..". Yes,however I was confused by Mr.Pearson writing style and couldn't always tell when the overturning ends and the celebrating begins,etc. Perhaps it's just me though. I'm no trained philosopher and the books depth may be a bit too scholarly. But struggling through, I was frequently rewarded with sentences that gave me new insights into Nietzschean thought. And it's for those insights that I recommend this book. Hey, for just $5.00, you can't lose.

The information contained in here is not bad, although I wouldn't go so far as to call it good. It reads like the yellow pages with a very bland tone, and it does not include personal experience. If you are looking for a just a directory, then this might be for you.

Each of the six stories in Chaim Potok's lovely collection is titled simply with the name of the main character, reflecting the essence of these quiet selections--intense, exquisitely drawn portraits of the ordinary lives of young people. In "Zebra" a boy, with the help of a mysterious, unconventional art teacher, begins to regain the use of his crushed hand--and in the process heals a bit of his injured spirit. Secrets abound in "B.B.," where a young girl whose baby brother has died must cope with discovering the hidden realities about her family that are "too much of a secret for me to be carrying alone." "Nava" describes how a young woman handles a bully, calling upon the strength inspired by the words of a Native American family friend to confront a violent drug dealer.

The issues faced by these young adults--trust, divorce, grief, hope, peer and family dynamics--are common coming-of-age milestones. Good For Class Discussions.......2005-02-04

Zebra and Other Stories by Chaim Potok is a great way to introduce students to voice and author. Each story presents a unique psychological insight to the characters, and possibly the author's own feelings about adolescent crises.

I especially enjoyed "Moon," which highlighted the disconnection many adolescents experience with their parents. The main character also undergoes a transformation, through the use of his music, which is an interest and need many adolescents identify with.

Though the stories left me with way more questions that answers, and a bit of confusion, I think Potok intended this for discussion purposes. The stories touch on very sensitive subjects, and can be a good way for students to be introduced to how we can discuss these subjects respectfully.

insightful stories.......2005-01-28

I thought this way this book was structured with the variety of different stories and perspectives help it to move quickly. I thought particularly Zebra and Nava were excellent stories about young adolescent experience. Potok did a great job of structuring each story with relevant and fast-paced events. I think students might find some of the characters or stories boring, but as a college education student, I enjoyed this collection.

Good for a school assignment, but otherwise, no..........2002-10-01

Our opinions on three of the stories:

ZEBRA: I think that the story Zebra was well written. The downside of the story is it's really boring. I think that stories like this are boring. Some people like them, but I don't. This would not be my first choice in books. I think it brings great shame to literature as we know it. It is a stupid and boring story which someone with nothing better to do would write. Who would want to read about a stupid kid who runs out in front of a car and gets hit by it? It's depressing! Sure the ending may be happy, but up to that point it's about a sad boy who ran into a car and broke most of his bones. ....

MOON: A critically acclaimed short story or a literary disaster? In my opinion, it is comparable to Hiroshima. I admit it was well written enough, but the plot was truly awful...for me, anyway. I'd rather have my appendix removed than read a book with a plot concerning people, their hardships, and how they grow afterwards, and that pretty much describes most of Mr. Potok's books. I hate books like that; Chicken Soup-like books. If, for whatever reason, you like books like that, then you'd probably like this book ...

NAVA: In my opinion, Nava is the best out of all the stories compiled into Zebra. However, the ending is one that doesn't fit the story very well, and it leaves you wanting more. The characters are believable, all except for the father, and the story isn't that well written. "How can one say all these negative things and still call it the best story of the book," you ask? Well, that is because this was the best story, which lets you know what I thought of the other ones. Zebra is a great book for classwork, because the stories are short enough that they can be read and discussed within a 42 minute class period, but I would never read this if I had a choice for pleasure reading.

Thought Prevoking.......2002-01-28

Chaim Potok's, book Zebra and Other Stories is very insightful. It gives us a glimpse of the complex lives of teens today. I really was able to identify with the emotions and feelings of the characters. I even felt at times as if I was a "fly on the wall", sneaking a peek!

Realism at it's finest.......2001-02-11

I was truly surprised when I finished reading this. It was very realistic and heartwrenching stories. There is a true tone to each and every story. You could see yourself in the stories and they were easy to relate to. Young adults would be able to relate to the characters and the situations that they find themselves in. Each problem that the characters go through could happen everyday in society. It was refreshing to read a book for young adults that models appropriate behavior. Great book.
