The book did not come with the CD (even though it was supposed to). It was noted on the packing slip that no CD was found. They should have contacted me instead of shipping the product. I had to pay shipping charges back to Owls Books. I WOULD NOT recommend using them.

Larger than life.......2003-11-09

John "Largo" Long is an almost larger than life pioneer in the Yosemite rock climbing and Joshua Tree bouldering communities of the 1970s and 1980s. He is also an extremely creative and interesting writer. One of the best things about this book is that it is inundated with humorous touches and is often hysterically funny. I highlyl recommend this book.

The stories he tells in this book, most of them true or at least with a kernel of truth in those that are larger than life, are always interesting. While the stories here only occasionally touch on climbing activities, they demonstrate a consistent philosophy of an adventurer at heart -- someone who lives his experiences to the fullest. Through his writing, he shows that he truly cares about the environment where his adventures take place; even though his experiences exploring prehistoric cultures in Malaysia seem to show a bit of disrespect to the cultures he is interfering with, I always sensed that he was respectful of the people around him.

ScaredLaughing to Death.......1999-11-27

Being scared to death, while laughing yourself to death, is a unique feeling, but one captured in this collection of adventure stories expertly. Long has an excellent ability to portray what inspires adventurers, from the silly to the serious, to risk their lives and what it feels like when they're doing it. I was thrilled to see that this book is still available. Get it now before it goes out of print! !

His best stuff........1999-02-05

I believe this is his first collection and I think his best. All his own writings, fact or based on fact, or fiction. The funniest adventure writer I have ever read. If you only want one John Long collection, this is the one to get.

Good Overview of a Great Wrestler.......2001-11-14

This is a better-than-expected kids book; especially considering Monsoon's heyday was over 40 years ago. It has a lot of good photos, covers the highlights of Monsoon's life in wrestling, and even taught me 1 or 2 things; like how Monsoon thrashed the legendary Antonino Rocca in 3 minutes. But its priced too high, and shortshrifts Monsoon's time as a fan-favorite. Gorilla had good matches left in him around 1969 on, beating Killer Kowalski, George Steele, Professor Tanaka and Lou Albano, among others.

A Little Disappointing.......2007-02-27

The book is just okay. I think Oliphant took what might have been a good magazine article about the 1955 World Series and made a mistake by trying to turn it into a book. He fills the narrative with descriptions of his family, his teachers, his friends, and he tends to repeat the same points over and over again---his father suffered from illnesses he had picked up in World War II, his mother was a reticent but strong woman of Scandinavian descent. I don't mean to be callous, but I bought the book because I wanted to read about the Dodgers and the 1955 World Series, not Oliphant's piano teacher.

Also, the book needed a good editor to correct the facts and straighten out the sometimes tangled sentences.

I am still praying for Gil Hodges, by the way. I pray he gets into the Baseball Hall of Fame

For those New Yorkers (and those who worshiped "dem Bums"), Tom Oliphant takes you into his heart and his family as they struggle with the failures of and finally the World Series success of our lovable Brooklyn Dodgers. A very excellent read, especially for those of the age to remember Roy Campanella, Willie Mays, and of course Gil Hodges!

Good Take on The Story.......2006-10-19

Oliphant is an excellent writer - the prose is solid English, as would be expected from a professional writer at the top of his game. Like some other reviewers, I am a contemporary of Oliphant's and from that Brooklyn of long ago. The author captures the times and, by blending it with a very good childhood memoir, tells the oft-told story of the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 40s and 50s with a fresh approach. That there are relatively so many books about this team and era only demonstrates how compelling the story is and Oliphant succeeds in giving it his own, interesting viewpoint.

Yes, as some other reviewers have noted, there are some factual errors and the geography of Brooklyn is a little off - the author has Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres warming up in front of the Dodger dugout along the first base line. While that is where the home dugout is is almost every park, the Dodgers, both at Ebetts Field, and to this day, have it on the third base side. The "Honeymooners" main character is said to be Ralph "Cramden" (not Kramden - a big mistake from someone writing about Brooklyn). Like another reviewer, I note that Oliphant, an only child, appears to exaggerate how poorly off he and his family were - they lived in a solidly middle-class housing complex on the East side of midtown Manhattan, across from the UN (today it is luxury housing), he went to a tony private school, and sang in the boys' chorus in the Metropolitan Opera. His parents, while not wealthy, seemed to have significant connections - not that many people had a reigning Broadway star, Yul Brenner, visit them. Nevertheless, a certain romantic poetic licence is to be expected and it does enhance the author's personal story.

This volume, while very good of this kind, will not displace Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer (the definitive work on this subject) but is well worth reading for the devotees of the Brooklyn Dodgers of that era.

Makes you feel like you are there..........2006-09-16

Journalist Tom Oliphant has given us an engrossing memoir of the game in which the old Brooklyn Dodgers won their only World Series in 1955. Readers are made to feel as if they are there in Yankee Stadium on that October day, or perhaps sitting in young Oliphant's living room watching the game on black-and-white television with him and his father. The exciting account to that tense seventh game is interspersed with anecdotes about Oliphant's family, the Yankees, Dodgers, life in Brooklyn during the 1950's, and, of course, his favorite player. The book has a couple minor factual errors (Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzuto did play briefly after the 1955 Series), but this is over-shadowed by the tension the reader feels as the game heads into the late innings with Dodger hurler Johnny Podres holding a shaky 2-0 lead. Despite minor flaws, this is an interesting account of how baseball affected a young fan, his family, and a large community.

I Wanted to Like it More.......2006-04-05

Yes, this is another one of those growing up in Brooklyn with the 50's Dodgers books. Oliphant displays a love for his family, the Dodgers and Brooklyn. Actually, though I really enjoy baseball books, I found myself enjoying the Brooklyn stuff more. For instance, I didn't know that Brooklyn is ten times the size of Washington, DC. Oliphant was nothing if not thorough in covering the games of the '55 Series, to the point I began scanning after awhile. I wanted to enjoy it more. However, it is a good read.

Went off Track.......2007-10-13

The book was a big dissappointment. The concept and the writing style were promising but missed the boat two ways. First, the technique of narrating the seventh series' game and cutting away to previous years was a bit confusing. But what ruined the book was the author's need to insert his politics into a book of this sort. They were unnecessary and irrelevant.

Why Leprecauns are no more in Dublin........2003-12-09

Anyone looking for four leaf clovers, leprecauns and little people should give this book a miss. Welcome to Dublin at the beginning of a new millennium and what a cosmopolitan, affluent, vibrant, colurful capital it has become. Even if the traffic is as chaotic as Tijuana, Robert O'Byrne's beautiful coffee table book with superb photography by Alex Ramsay, is a sneak peek into the New Ireland: and in particular into some of the most beautiful homes in the city.

It would have been easy for O'Byrne to go down the well travelled, tried and tested Georgian route and he does. But he also embraces coverted warehouses which now boast New York style lofts, contemporary minimal cottages, converted mews houses, hotels, bars, restaurants and shop fronts which all point to Dublin, as O'Byrne says, as a work in progress.

The State Apartments in Dublin Castle, refurbished by the then Prime Minster Charlie Haughey are also beautifully chronciled as is the historic Old Library at Trinity College, O'Byrne's Alma Mater.

Dublin's rich literary heritage is also included. The city has been home to George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, Sam Beckett and Seamus Heaney, to name just a few but O'Byrne plumps for the home of contemporary, prize winning author Colm Tobin with it's colorful interiors reflecting that authors on going love affair with Barcelona.The beautiful Georgian interiors of the Dublin Writers Museum in Parnell Square are also included as is the doorway of No. 7 Eccles Street, home of James Joyce's fictional character Leopold Bloom in Ulysses.

An excellent book which gives insight into the life of a person with diabetes. It is easy to understand both for people with and without diabetes. The book gives us Johns first hand experiences of coping with the day to day challenges of having diabetes. It is an accurate, well written, down-to-earth, humourous story. The book shows us that diabetes can never be a restriction for living life to the best. One of my first impressions when reading this book was: "Wow, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way". It contains a lot of practical tips and gives the reader reassurance, hope and a sense of happiness. Instead if asking "why me?" we end up asking ourselves "why not me?".
I would even recommend this book to members of the medical profession who work closely with people who have diabetes.

New insights!.......2004-04-23

I just recently finished reading this new book called "Living Life With Diabetes", by John Keeler. What an amazing book he wrote. My husband is a diabetic and afterreading this I understand so much more about him. I was brought into his world for just bit, but enough that I learned so much. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who is a diabetic, is married to a diabetic, have children who are diabetic or even if you just know anyone who does. Thank you John and Good Luck.
