Book Description
From the most trusted voice on transition, a revised edition of the classic practical guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change.
The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization.
Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change.
Customer Reviews:
High rating for a textbook, but it deserves it........2007-08-11
I have had several textbooks in Management between an Undergraduate, Graduate and Business itself. This was no different in that I expected the same old stuff, but was very pleasantly surprised at the authors candor about our perceptions of business practices. It didn't mince words on several tactics used by management and explained why so much doesn't work. It got my attention and I continued my reading with far more interest. There really isn't anything more complimentary I can say than I intend to sell all other books to new students, excect this one which I will hang on to and reference.
great results from this book.......2007-07-06
This is a wonderful book. If you deal with people who need to change how they do their work you must read this book.
great, short, valuable.......2007-07-04
This is a great book for all people who deal with people that are dealing with change. I have found this book useful when being a change agent for a company, or just for management in my own company. Part of the value of this book is it describes the emotional aspect of change. People are not always (usually) logical. Emotions play a large part. Knowing how to deal with the emotional aspect of change is essential. This book gives you great insights in this area.
Managing Transitions by William Bridges.......2007-05-13
This book is great! I was/am dealing with some pretty significant transitions -- the sudden death of my 21 year-old daughter, and a major division re-org at an S&P 500 company. Several months earlier, my VP had mentioned the book and suggested that all of his direct reports to read it. I did and it really hit home.
The author does an excellent job of describing the emotional and organizational impact of change and the mechanics of the process we use to get through it. We use the same basic process to deal with all change -- personal and professional -- and it has been very helpful to understand how it works. There is also a section in the book about the life cycle of an organization and that was illuminating. The book provided some tools to help me make critical decisions.
I bought six copies of the book and have given them out to friends and co-workers.
Great ~.......2007-05-07
This was a great book and well needed. If your your in or responsible for transitions. This is for you - an eye opener to some great ideas and the author takes the reader to both sides of the good and bad involving the transitional process and how it should be done. Great insight!
Customer Reviews:
Well-written, organized, but non-innovative.......2005-08-15
I took a College Sophomore class in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1979, and the text was EXTREMELY dry and technical. However, it contained many of the ideas contained in the book being reviewed. Bridges has taken that dry, technical theory, re-written it in user-friendly language, and incorporated concepts from script theory (see Joan Atwood's highly repetitive but informative "Family Scripts") and from developmental theory (see Sandor Brent's very theoretical but informative "Psychological and Social Structures"). The result is a light, very readable book on how people handle change. For someone who has not studied psychology, much of the information will be new and helpful. For anyone in the field of psychology, and especially those who have studied industrial/organizational psychology and developmental psychology, there is nothing innovative here. There are lots of good quotes in the margins, and they might be the best part of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but..........2003-05-04
This book covers some of the basics, but you also need Beitler's "Strategic Organizational Change."
Managing Change at Work Revised Edition.......2000-05-15
This really was a fifty-minute book, but it was packed with well thought-out skills and strategies. It is a book that you will be able to turn to again and again for tips and tricks to use as different situations come up during organizational changes. The topics not only prepare you for change, they guide you through it and position you for the future. You will be able to identify your own style and recognize areas that need to be improved to facilitate change allowing you to create a one-minute advantage over your competitors. It covers not only how to deal with people and their attitudes but also topics as important as establishing an action plan. I recommend this book to anyone that needs a simple, concise guide to help move their company forward in today's and tomorrow's fast-paced competitive environment.

Helps Treat the Difficult U.S Tossed Salad Workforce........2004-12-09
Davis states in 'Fast Track to Waste Free Manufacturing': "The real purpose of Lean Manufacturing is to enlist the workforce in driving waste out of an operation."
From this statement we infer the critical nature the topic of 'The People Dimension' plays in the lean transformation. The people problems faced in implementing lean are rarely treated in any depth in Lean literature. In my opinion, these people problems are the "soft underbelly of implementing lean manufacturing in the U.S." A case in point. G.M. determined early in the 1980's that it's products were not competitive in price and quality with Toyota's products. G.M. then entered into a joint venture with Toyota (New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. - NUMMI) in order to learn the Toyota Production System (TPS) in exchange for providing a U.S. distribution channel to Toyota. Now, twenty years later, G.M. still has not involved it's workforce in continuous improvement activities to the extent Japanese auto makers routinely are able to do.
BUT YOU SAY - Toyota's American workers are just as productive as their native Japanese workers - NOT SO. The cycle time for the average Toyota product in America is still twice as long as that in a Toyota Japanese plant.
THE POINT IS, the homogeniety and dedication of the Japanese worker is such that the U.S. domestic car maker may never be able to match the price/quality of the Japanese made automobile.
Lean manufacturing processes require empowering the worker. Unless the worker is prepared and committed to taking on additional required responsibilites, the lean transformation will ultimately fail.
Recardo and Peluso's book 'The People Dimension' treats the difficulty that the U.S. 'Tossed Salad' workforce presents to the lean transformation effort.
No where else have I found topics such as: The communication strategy, Targeted education programs, Self directed work teams, Skill based pay systems (SBP). and especially, Organizational change management, treated as adroitly and fully in a lean model as they are treated in 'The People Dimension'.
This book is definitely one of a kind and works for me.
Relevance to the lean practitioner 7/10
Relevance to the lean manager 9/10
Clarity and organization 9/10
Original content 10/10

Book Description
Constant organizational change has led to new challenges for the HR department. In some instances it has created problems. This book identifies the two key problems facing senior managers and HR directors today:
- employees feelings of mistrust and insecurity, and their effects on the employment relationship
- the speed of organizational change which requires employees to make continuous transitions.
This book shows that the management of careers in organizations is still possible if career transitions:
- are negotiated with employees
- are supported by management
- and, hence, recreate trust
The authors outline the analytical, managerial and leadership tasks facing those seeking to manage careers in a climate of constant change. Fully illustrated with case studies this book will be of enormous use to any director concerned with the future success of the organization.
"A thoughtful, very readable and well-documented overview of employment in the context of the huge changes in the world of work that have been going on through the nineties. From the point of view of employers, the book is of particular value in drawing attention to the importance of trust as the basis of the social capital element in the intellectual property of organizations." Godfrey Golzen, Editor, Human Resources
"Trust and Transition is an important book on an important topic. If organizations are to manage change effectively, they need to help their employees to do so too. This deeply ethical as well as practical book indicates why this matters, and how career contracting can make it happen." A.G. Watts, National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling

Book Description
A 'textbook' plant typically comprises about 85% water and 13.5% carbohydrates. The remaining fraction contains at least 14 mineral elements, without which plants would be unable to complete their life cycles. Understanding plant nutrition and applying this knowledge is essential to increasing crop production to meet growing demands for food. Genotypic approaches, based on crop selection and / or breeding have recently begun to benefit from technological advances, including the completion of plant genome sequencing projects. Plant Nutritional Genomics provides a timely overview of plant nutritional genomics, which is defined as the interaction between a plant's genome and its nutritional characteristics. Optimising mineral nutrition during crop production is vital to the development of healthy and nutritional pest and disease resistant crops without relying on chemical input. The judicious selection and breeding of fit-for-purpose varieties of crops will play a huge role in meeting these objectives, and advances in plant nutritional genomics will allow the full potential of crop selection and breeding strategies to be realized.

Customer Reviews:
Beloved Beasts and their bizaare ways............2002-06-18
Richard du Toit and Peter Apps, photographer and author of Creatures of Habit show intriguing insight in presenting the beguiling beauty and sometimes bizaare behaviour of curious African creatures. This is not just a reference book, it is a wonderful winding adventure through the African bush. It combines the charm of the charismatic mega fauna, (lion leopard elephants etc.)with the wonder of the often ignored, smaller superstars of the savannah scapes. Peter Apps writing is accessible and authoratative and he gives new insights into the private lives of many facinating creatures. The real cudos however, undoubtably go to Richard du Toit who must be one of the finest wildlife photographers working today. His pictures are fresh and inspiring and he manages to capture behavioural moments that regularly escape the eye of even the most experienced photographers. Richard shows an intimate understanding and clear passion for bushveld beasts. Perhaps the greatest thing about his pictures is that he never overlooks the little guys who invariably add originality and interest to every frame. Creatures of Habit is both informative and highly original. Top marks to Richard du Toit and Peter Apps!

An Adventurous and Suspenseful Book .......2005-03-02
This was a very interesting book. It taught me about all the ruff times the Native Americans went through when the Englishmen moved to North America. The book also showed how badly the Englishmen treated the Native Americans. The Englishmen would give the Indians free supplies just for living on a reservoir. The free supplies they got though were either rotten food or torn disgusting blankets. Many of the Native Americans would rather die fighting than to die on the reservoirs. This led to many battles between the Native Americans and the Englishmen.
About Only Earth and Sky Last Forever.......2002-03-05
In the story, the main character lived in an Indian settlement. He saw a beautiful girl named Lashuka there, and decided that he wanted to marry her. He asked Lashuka's mother if they could be wed, but she saw no reason to let him marry her. She said that he didn't have anything to offer, so he went to join with the warriors and prove himself. He attacked a small number of white men with them, but something horrible happened. Agency warriors, Indian warriors that lived on the Bluecoats' land, attacked them and saved the white men. The thought of Sioux fighting Sioux disturbed him so much, he set out in hopes of ending it and proving himself to Lashuka's mother.
I enjoyed this book because it was really descriptive and its set a picture in my mind. It was interesting and I thought that it was a good topic for a book. It was exciting to see the plot unfold. I really enjoyed it, and I think that anyone who enjoys a good, adventurous book would really enjoy it, too. The beginning was good at preparing you for the rest of the book, and the middle and end was really exciting. It showed me what Native Americans went through, and I thought it was really interesting. Overall, it surprised me at how adventurous it was.
A good book, but the ending feels rushed and incomplete........1999-10-20
In search of novels about Native Americans for my seventh grade classes, I recently read this work. The story of Dark Elk's struggle to make sense of his world in the critical historical period leading up to the battle of Little Bighorn is filled with a realistic mixture of hope, sorrow, strength, and futility. Benchley had my attention right up until the ending. After the big battle scene, however, I felt that Benchley must have run out of ideas. He summarizes the rest of his character's life in two short, un-enlightening paragraphs. Whether this listless conclusion symbolizes the emptiness of Dark Elk's remaining years or not, I found it to be unsatisfactory.
A good book.......1999-04-19
this was an excellent book because it tells the life of the native americans who lived here before us. I recommend it to any age reader.
Well-written, first look into Native American culture.......1998-12-14
I must admit that I read this book about 28 years ago, but it touched something in me that I have not forgotten since. This book gives young people a glimpse into Native American culture in a way that can make them see the goodness of these people and their connection with the earth and all things in it.
I recently gave it to my 9 year-old son and he enjoyed it immensely. I can only hope that it showed him ways to treat (and not treat) others.
I highly recommend this book for parents who are trying to show their children some of the philosophy and culture of the people who were here before us and only wished to continue their way of life as they had for centuries.
