Book Description
This is the Center for Effective Organizations’s (CEO) fourth national study of the human resources (HR) function in large corporations. It is the only long-term national study of this important function. Like the previous studies, it focuses on measuring whether the HR function is changing and on gauging its effectiveness. The study focuses particularly on whether the HR function is changing to become an effective strategic partner. It also analyzes how organizations can more effectively manage their human capital. The present study compares data from earlier studies to data collected in 2004. The results show some important changes and indicate what HR needs to do to be effective. Practices are identified that enable HR functions to be high value-added strategic partners.
Customer Reviews:
for the right audience that can read the tables, this has good information.......2007-08-14
You will have to be interested in HR at a certain deep level to find this academic report compelling. It isn't that the material is wrong or unimportant. In fact, it is really good stuff. Rather, it is presented in an academic style (happily, mostly free of jargon) with lots of tables that will, if you don't know how to read them, cause your eyes to cross.
The gist of the report is that HR has not decreased it ratio to employees during the time of the report (1995-2005), that its tasks have increased because certain transactional operations are now done with IT HR systems (computers and software), that HR managers and the rest of management do see the role of HR differently, but not as differently as one might first expect, that outsourcing has increased for HR - but only for certain tasks, that outsourcing might be costing companies a strategic resource in their employee relationships, that HR needs to reinvent itself to become more of a business and strategic partner in the corporate power structure, and that such a re-invented HR function could very well be a value-add contributor to the success of the company.
One of the things the authors underscore again and again is that in more strategically focused companies, the HR function tends to be not only more strategically designed, but that it usually contributes more. Where the company is intensely focused on strategy, the HR function tends to be viewed as an administrative cost center.
Interesting for the right audience.

Book Description
Boas are a diverse group of both New and Old World snakes. Adult specimens of certain sand boa species attain a maximum size of only two to three feet, while the green anaconda may exceed 30 feet in length. For decades, humans have maintained boas in captivity. Recreating a suitable environment in which various boa species can thrive and even reproduce has always been a challenge for the herpetoculturist. Captive Husbandry and Propagation of the Boa Constrictors and Related Boas contains detailed information specific to boa species and subspecies. All major captive care considerations are addressed allowing boa keepers to provide for, and possibly breed their captives. Comprehensive chapters on heating devices and their application to herpetoculture, and designing a herp room will be extremely beneficial for everyone maintaining any species of reptiles, as well as the boa keeper

Book Description
Chaos theory plays an important role in modern physics and related sciences, but -, the most important results so far have been obtained in the study of gravitational systems applied to celestial mechanics. The present set of lectures introduces the mathematical methods used in the theory of singularities in gravitational systems, reviews modeling techniques for the simulation of close encounters and presents the state of the art about the study of diffusion of comets, wandering asteroids, meteors and planetary ring particles. The book will be of use to researchers and graduate students alike.
Book Description
This book aims to introduce to a larger audience issues that are too often limited to scholarly circles. A thought-provoking collection of essays by some of the environmental movement's preeminent thinkers, it explores the dynamic tension between wild nature and civilization, offering insights into why the relationship has become adversarial and suggesting creative means for reconciliation.
Contributors include:Paul Shepard, Curt Meine, Max Oelschlaeger, and George Sessions.
Book Description
For the last decade, golfers of all abilities have been drawn to the writings and teachings of Bob "Doc" Rotella. His books Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect, Golf Is a Game of Confidence, The Golf of Your Dreams, and Putting Out of Your Mind have all become classics for golfers everywhere. Weekend golfers and pros like Brad Faxon, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Tom Kite, and Davis Love III all read and listen to the man they call Doc because his teachings are simple and direct -- and in the end, what Doc says makes them play better golf.
The Golfer's Mind was actually first suggested by Davis Love, Jr. -- Davis Love III's dad -- who encouraged Doc to write an instruction book on golf's mental challenges, organized by topic. Love thought that golfers could keep the book with them, or at least nearby, at all times. When they needed a refresher on a certain issue, they could consult the book, read for a few minutes, and take away solid guidance regarding their difficulties. Doc heard what Love said, and twenty years later, The Golfer's Mind is that book. From his Ten Commandments (Commandment I. Play to play great. Don't play not to play poorly) to just about any topic a golfer might imagine, this is the ideal way for players to get all of Rotella's teachings. Doc covers topics including:
- Butterflies
- Practicing to Play Great
- The Rhythm of the Game
- Routine
- Setbacks
- How Winning Happens
In the perfect format for the busy golfer, The Golfer's Mind is the concise and convenient quick-reference tool to appeal to Rotella's millions of followers and is sure to become a golf classic.
Customer Reviews:
golfer's mind.......2007-02-22
Very good, but too repetitive. I also read Fearless Golf by Gio Valiante which is a much better read with more meat in my opinion.
A great Mental aide.......2006-11-05
Since Golf is, in my opinion, a "mental" game, this book really helped me over the hurdles of negative thoughts. Took Dr. Rotella's "therapy" with me on the course......Truly, helped to improve my game I highly recommend it.
Read This Book Before The Big Match/Outing.......2006-05-11
I am not a distinguished golfer by any means, but I have an annual competitive golf trip with buddies that stirs my competitive juices at the start of the golf season. Rather than take a golf lessson (which would just confuse the heck out of me so close to competition), I bought and read this book. It made all the difference in the world as far as my mental attitude was concerned. I was able to keep a positive attitude after my (inevitable) poor golf shots, and I celebrated my good ones.
I loved his rule to "love your putter and wedge". In other words, to get enthusiastic about the opportunity to use both clubs. That mental attitude change made a huge difference in my short game.
This book also helped me give myself permission to play well. Too often, I would start a round hot and then fold under the pressure of a low scorecard. Dr Rotella helped me recognize this mental flaw and deal with it when it reared its head.
Let's be real here, this book is no substitute for talent and dedicated practice. But if you're tired of blowing up on the golf course and often harbor thoughts of abandoning your clubs on the bag drop rack, this book is for you. It will help you play to your true potential.
As for my golf outing, it was handicap adjusted, and I was the only guy to shoot under my index (by one stroke over three rounds), so I took home the trophy and some cash. For the 13 previous years that I attended, I never came close to winning. The difference was my mental attitude during the competition and my ability to deal with the pressure. For me, this book paid for itself, quite literally.
Great Book for any person wanting to play better golf........2006-03-21
This book is not a good book, it is a great book. It won't tell you how to mechannically play better golf but it will tell you the results of poor attitues and habits that we all have which limit our ability to play our best. I recomend this book to all those folks that throw clubs, spit nasty words, or just become slightly unnerved. There is more to this book than that but you will have to read it to find out.
service review.......2006-02-25
The product I ordered was in good condition as described, and arrived in a timely manner.

Cutting-edge information for us foodies!.......2006-07-07
People who love combining great food and travel make pilgrimages to Italy's Po Valley, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hanoi, Singapore, France's Lyon, San Francisco, Charleston, New Orleans and other shrines to fine cooking.
Add Peru to the list.
If you aren't aware that Peru has its very own fusion cuisine -- very approximately like that of New Orleans with a blend of Indian, Spanish and African styles -- plus contributions by Chinese and Japanese settlers, Eat Smart in Peru will open your eyes to yet another fine gourmet destination.
Authors Joan Peterson and Brook Soltvedt are way ahead of the curve in discovering Peruvian cuisine. I was only aware of Peruvian chicken, based on a carryout in my neighborhood that serves this dish, cooked on a rotating spit over charcoal, with a rosemary-based spice shoved under the chicken skin, and a fine salsa verde on the side. Peterson and Soltvedt found a vast variety of other dishes, including curries, desserts and appetizers. A section on recipes includes Aji de Gallina, a chicken stew that I plan to try.
In addition to the recipes, Eat Smart in Peru contains a history of the development of Peru's cuisine, a regional specialties chapter, a glossary of ingredients and menu guide.
Finally, Eat Smart in Peru tells you how to shop in a Peruvian market and how to locate rare ingredients stateside. It's an easy read, with nice illustrations and a logical organization.
By the way, the author has done other "Eat Smart" guides to Brazil, Mexico, India, Turkey, Poland and other destinations.
Intricately Researched Culinary Guide.......2006-05-27
"...picarones, a doughnut-like snack or dessert made from a yeasty pumpkin dough. The rings of dough are formed by hand, deep-fried and served with raw-sugar syrup flavored with orange, aniseed, cinnamon and cloves." ~ pg. 14
The Eat Smart guides are an exploration of cuisine itself and are interesting even if you never reach the desired destination. You can order ingredients online for the recipes featured. There are pictures of delicious cultural favorites, food markets and unique ingredients. Some of the main sections include:
Early History through Pre-Inca Civilizations
The Regions of Peru
Tastes of Peru
Shopping in Peru's Food Markets
Resources
Helpful Phrases
Menu Guide
Food and Flavors Guide
Restaurants
Joan Peterson and Brook Soltvedt also show how various cultures influenced Peru's culinary world and the first part of this book contains a lot of culinary history that may appeal to food writers. Maps and pictures of the food make it easier to understand the cultural significance of food choices.
"Rare is the Peruvian dish that does not include chile pepper. Each river valley oasis along the western slopes of the Andes has a microclimate that produces unique varieties of chile peppers, which are, in turn, completely different from the peppers native to the jungle." ~ pg. 19
Recipes for Rice Pudding look familiar and if you can find gooseberries, you can make the gooseberry marmalade to serve with quinoa crepes.
Other highlights include a section on helpful phrases you can use in restaurants. List of foods like "nuez moscada" have translations, nutmeg. If you order a tortilla, you will get an omelet.
Eat Smart in Peru will appeal to anyone who is curious about new culinary discoveries and wants to either travel to Peru or incorporate new recipes into their cooking repertoire.
~The Rebecca Review

New York City's lights are bright enough to thrill even the most jaded teen--at first, anyway. Tracey Bascombe runs away to the writhing metropolis in hopes of living anonymously, away from her neglectful father and pill-popping mother. Sparkling facades are rarely what they seem, however, and soon Tracey must confront New York's gritty underbelly. Alone in the huge city, without real skills, Tracey turns to stripping in order to survive. In what may be one of the most graphic books ever written for teens, author Shelley Stoehr takes readers inside the mind of a runaway teen as she splits apart in order to maintain her sanity. She may be Tracey by day, but at night, under the hazy glow of stage lights, she becomes Amanda and dances for slobbering, objectifying men. Stoehr bravely abandons all moralizing here. Instead, the author allows Tracey/Amanda to describe her own life in painful, lurid detail, resulting in a powerful, cautionary tale for mature teens everywhere.
Book Description
When sixteen-year-old Tracey runs away she finds that making ends meet in New York City for a young girl with few real skills is nearly impossible. That s when Tracey becomes Amanda, a topless dancer. On her first day of work, another dancer gives Amanda this advice: Never mix this place with the real world, but already Tracey s and Amanda s worlds seem like one big blur...

Wonderfully Entertaining.......2003-09-03
The first time I read this book was either in the sixth or seventh grade and I fell in love with it. I so amazed with such an adult matter the book had and even more amazed how well the author was able to word it for young teens to understand. Even as a young teen, I felt like I knew Tracy and understood her pain. I loved the book so much that I even stole it from the library in my hometown. Even being in my Twenties, I still enjoy this book. Everyone should read this book.
REALLY REALLY GOOD!.......1998-07-05
I live in the city and it was very real. I could also relate to her problems, because I am a girl around her age, however I have never gone to the extremes that she went too. It gets down to the nitty gritty, and is a great read for all ages. Infact I am surprised it's not also classified as an "adult book" because it's just as real for both age groups. It was the kind of book that made me laugh, while also making me cry at parts. A highly recomended read!
Great!.......1998-03-05
It really shows whats going on and tells it like it is. I'm 13 and LOVED the book... It ruled because it seemed like it was really written by a 17 year old runaway. She used language things that we use and can relate with...in all it RULED!
It was a get down to reality kind of book........1997-12-01
I avidly read this book in a matter of hours. From start to finish I was mysteriously drawn page-by-page into this dark reality. She uncovered a life that is unjustly criticized and I feel this will be an eye-opening experience for many to read.

From the supplier: Stoehr writes books for teenagers that have a new style. Her book 'Weird on the Outside' is about a 17-yr-old who moves to New York City to become a topless dancer. Stoehr's inspiration for the book came from her past association with strippers.
