Book Description
Workers have basic rights that should not be violated, notwithstanding the geographical locale of their work. But those rights often appear to conflict with the economic and commercial needs of both developing nations and multinational enterprises. Creative approaches are necessary if workers' rights are to coexist with commercial success, or even survival. This book introduces the current global labor milieu and showcases innovative solutions via original case studies (e.g., Nike, Levi Strauss), which demonstrate how multinational enterprises can respect worker rights while benefiting from the economic advantages of a global labor market. Part I provides an overview of global labor challenges from a broad variety of perspectives, including economics, public policy, philosophy, and strategic management. The facts and contention of the "new sweatshop" school of thought are analyzed, along with industrialization and utilization of labor in developing countries; the application of basic human rights to the circumstances of workers; the unique role of nongovernmental organizations in the debate over global labor practices; and the "Total Responsibility Management" approach to implementing improved labor practices. Part II analyzes case studies, based on original field research, of well-known global corporations. The examined programs provide examples of innovative responses by multinational firms, the International Labor Organization, and other NGOs to challenges regarding global labor practices. These cases can help other firms avoid the unhappy dilemma of either exploiting workers and enduring a public relations backlash, or terminating operations in various developing nations. The true solution lies in companies respecting worker rights, while benefiting from the economic advantages of a global labor market.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent in-depth look at the sweatshop debate.......2004-05-24
The editors of "Rising Above Sweatshops" are to be commended for significantly advancing the debate over global sweatshops. This book is divided into two main sections. Part I includes original theoretical perspectives by university professors on the globalization of the supply chain from the perspective of law (Murray - La Trobe), economics/industrial relations (London - Wisconsin), moral philosophy (Arnold - Tennessee), public policy (Santoro - Rutgers), and management - (Waddock - Boston College and Bodwell - ILO). These essays are clearly written and are largely free of academic jargon. They provide an excellent overview of global labor challenges by explaining the economic and political forces that have lead to the current situation; the moral or ethical basis for respecting workers; the role played by NGO's (such as the WRC and FLA) in improving working conditions; and the idea of "total responsibility management," which is being used by some companies to balance their ethical obligations with their fiduciary obligations. Part II includes seven long, original cases studies about morally innovative labor and environmental practices. Basically, the authors of these case studies have traveled to places like Vietnam, Brazil, and Costa Rica to visit factories (e.g., Nike, adidas, Levi Strauss, Dow Chemical) and plantations (e.g., Chiquita) and observed the innovative practices of companies and NGOs at work. There are some surprises here: For example, Nike's Vietnamese factory operations include things like free after-hours education at the factory and excellent heath and safety conditions. And Dow has a remarkably environmentally friendly and safe chemical factory in Thailand. The main thing to take away from these case studies is that the apologists for bad working conditions ("it's too expensive" or "we can't control our contractors") are shown to be wrong by companies that have put in place programs that demonstrate respect for their employees. If you are involved in the "sweatshop" debate as either an activist or as a manager, you should find this book to be a valuable resource. It will help you to make the case for putting in place practices that treat employees fairly and with dignity. After all, if these companies can do it, why can't others?

Book Description
John Dyson has contributed to the study of the hydrodynamic processes that govern a wide variety of astrophysical sources which he has helped explain. In this volume dedicated to him, introductory reviews to a number of the key processes and to the sources themselves are given by leading experts. The mechanisms in which the multi-component natures of media affect their dynamics receive particular attention, but the roles of hydromagnetic effects are also highlighted. The importance of cosmic ray moderation and mass transfer between different thermal phases for cosmic ray moderation and mass transfer between different thermal phases for the evolution of flows are amongst the topics treated. The main types of regions considered include those where stars form, the circumstellar environments of evolved stars, the larger scale interstellar structures caused by the mass loss of stars, and those where the lines of AGNs form.
The reviews complement one another and together provide a coherent introduction to the astrophysics of diffuse sources suitable for postgraduate students and researchers in astrophysics. Individual reviews stand alone and are suitable for an audience that includes advanced undergraduates doing final year projects.

Think You Know Baseball?
Think Again.
The Red Sox finally won a World Series, in a triumph of unconventional wisdom. They rethought the batting order and committed to Johnny Damon as lead-off. Saw the talent in David Ortiz that other teams overlooked. Had the courage to trade one of the game’s top shortstops for the good of the team. They knocked over the sacred cows of RBIs, sacrifice bunts, the hit-and-run, and hewed to the new thinking about pitch count—allowing Pedro Martinez, arguably baseball’s best pitcher ever, to excel.• Weaving statistics, narrative, personalities, and anecdote, MIND GAME reveals exactly how this group of“ idiots,” led by Theo Epstein and Terry Francona, was in fact the smartest team in the league, and revolutionizes the thinking fan’s understanding of how baseball games are
really won and lost.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Analysis of How the Red Sox Took the 2004 World Series.......2007-08-26
The best thing about reading anything by the team that writes for the Baseball Prospectus is the wit and humor with which they analyze the game on the field. They do this well in "Mind Game" and offer a valuable perspective on how the Theo Epstein led Boston Red Sox was able to capture the World Series in 2004. As might be expected, statheads that they are, this team of writers adores another stathead and celebrates the rise of sabermetrics in baseball management. Epstein is a follower of the legendary Billy Beane in Oakland, the hero of Michael Lewis's "Moneyball" (2003), himself a loyal acolyte of the guru of all statheads, Bill James. By building a team using the statistical measurements advocated by James, according to editor Steven Goldman and his team of writers, Theo Epstein made it possible for the Red Sox finally after 86 years to win the World Series following a series of near misses.
What we learn from this book is that the Red Sox had suffered years of mismanagement through cronyism, racism, and a host of other "isms." When the longstanding Yawkey influence was finally purged from the team's ownership in the early twenty-first century a new clear vision of how to win took root. Epstein pursued it relentlessly, restructuring the team to reflect a philosophy built around big innings, on base percentage, power hitting, and strong defense especially up the middle. Indeed, as the back cover of this book notes, there are several myths exploded in this book:
* A lineup the strikes out a lot can't be a winner.
* There's no such thing as too much offense.
* Until 2004, the Red Sox were habitual underperformers in the post-season.
* Teams play better after an emotionally uplifting brawl.
* Mariano Rivera was the best closer in baseball from 1999 to 2003.
There is a large amount of additional conventional wisdom busted in "Mind Game" as well.
In the end what emerges is an enjoyable, enlightening discussion of how the Red Sox were able to win it all in 2004. It's a satisfying analysis that even the non-stathead will find useful.
If They Were Smart in 2004...What Happened in 2006?.......2006-09-07
In retrospect, any team that wins a league championship has done nothing but make the right moves. How could it be otherwise? It could because while the reading is fine, and the data excellent, BP only writes about the right moves the Sox made, and totally ignores their dumb moves, like signing oft-injured Scott Williamson to be a key cog in their bullpen, or having no minor leaguers ready to help the rotation and leaving Derek 'How' Lowe Can You Go in the rotation all year.
Well, they say winners get to write the history books. I guess the same could be said about baseball champs as well. It would be interesting to see how the writers at BP talk about the 2006 Red Sox, who have the same 'Smart' front-office people, but whose team flat out gave up in August.
Interesting but mostly redundant for BP subscribers.......2006-07-21
I'm a subscriber to the Baseball Prospectus website and read their sabermetrically-oriented articles every day, so I was looking forward to "Mind Game" to see what new insights they could bring into the construction of the 2004 Red Sox. Alas, having read so much BP material over the last few years, "Mind Game" didn't feel like it had much new to offer me that I hadn't seen before. In a nutshell: compared to the Yankees, the Red Sox spent their money more wisely, including their ability to get value from freely available talent (especially David Ortiz).
There are a lot of juicy stories from the season, especially with the Alex Rodriguez non-trade and the shocking Garciaparra trade, but as some of the other reviewers point out, the narrative doesn't flow nearly as well as in "Moneyball". I still enjoyed having a nice baseball book to tote around and read on the train, but I would mostly recommend "Mind Game" to those baseball fans who aren't already plugged into the sabermetric network, and are interested in the sometimes-surprising results that current baseball research is discovering.
Some good analysis, but it's no "Moneyball.".......2006-03-02
I like to think of Theo Epstein's philosophy as "Moneyball with money." He applies many of the same principles espoused by the sabremetric crowd, but he does so within the context of a fairly rich ballclub so he can afford to make a mistake or two.
What "Mind Game" does very well is analyze what made the 2004 Red Sox different from all the failed clubs that came before it. Theo Epstein had a plan, he stuck to that plan, and he had a manager in Terry Francona who believed in the system and understood how to execute it. He didn't build a collection of superstars in the Yankee mold, but rather a team of players with specific strengths placed in roles that exploited those strengths.
There are some very provocative ideas in the book, several of which have been mentioned in previous reviews. Is Pedro really the greatest pitcher of all time? Is Derek Jeter really overrated? Is Keith Foulke really a better pitcher than Mariano Rivera? The authors make their case, and while you might still disagree after reading it, there is plenty of food for thought.
Like "Moneyball" before it, "Mind Game" challenges some generally accepted baseball principles. Unlike "Moneyball," however, "Mind Game" is an ex post facto analysis. It's much easier to watch the Red Sox win the World Series and then proclaim Theo Epstein a genius than it is to actually sit in the Draft room with Billy Beane and explain why he knows better than the scouts.
Another issue I have with "Mind Game" is that it is a collection of essays as opposed to a cohesive story about a team. Ironically, the book is like the Yankees. The sum of its parts is better than the whole. Each essay focuses on a particular player or moment and does an in-depth analysis of its subject and how it contributed to the overall picture, but the overall picture is sometimes lost in the statistical analysis. Some chapters require multiple readings to gain a clear undertsnding of the statistics involved.
Overall, "Mind Game" is a good book. Red Sox fans will love it because it gives you a million more reasons why that 2004 team was so special. Thoughtful baseball fans will enjoy it for its statistical analysis and challenging ideas. I think even open-minded Yankees fans will gain something from "Mind Game," even if they disagree with some of the points raised. The only people to whom I would NOT recommend this book are the lockstepping Yankees fans who meet even the slightest criticism of the Bronx Bomers with screams of "26 World Championships" and "Jeter is God."
Simultaneously Smart and Sophomoric.......2006-02-13
I love reading about baseball, and I'm a huge fan of sabermetric analysis. Plus, I hate the Yankees. So I was prepared to love "Mind Game." But it's a distinct disappointment. It's sloppily written and terribly redundant, as would be expected from a book with so many contributors. But worse than that, the venom with which the Yankees are treated has colored some contributors' opinions so badly that their comments and analysis are wrong. In summation, the book provides the deep statistical analysis and interesting historical perspective I've come to expect from Baseball Prospectus, but it's not nearly as good as I expected.

Book Description
In spite of the premature publication of my 'zine and resulting renewed social ostracism, things are happening for me! I've been stood up by the coolest girl in school, I have a Jesus bracelet, I ate dinner at a steak restaurant and lived to tell, I may be a virgin until I marry, I'm a Miss Smithers candidate, and I HAVE LEATHER PANTS! I even feel ready for the first official event of the pageant, the Etiquette Workshop.
No longer homeschooled and socially isolated, Alice McLeod has: 1. a female friend, George; 2. a male friend, Goose; 3. a $400 clothing allowance to dress herself for the Miss Smithers pageant.
Following on the debut of Alice, I Think, Susan Juby's delightful second novel is about finding the perfect outfit and finding oneself, about winning a pageant and winning at love.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Winner.......2007-01-12
Alice does not typically go for beauty pageants and all that jazz - but when she discovers that entrants will get $400 for clothes, she's game. (She has her heart set on leather pants.) Sponsored by the Smithers Rod and Gun Club and surrounded by other eccentric participants, Alice quickly learns that she is not the only participant to have ulterior motives.
As with the previous novel (Alice, I Think), this story is told in extremely funny diary entries. She is constantly mortified by her New Age-y mom and slacker dad, and often finds her super-smart little brother to be wiser than her grown-up guidance counselor. Her time as Miss Smithers introduces her to karate, tests her vegetarianism, gives her material for her self-published zine, and teaches her the value of a dollar. Okay, maybe not that, but she does ultimately appreciate her true talents, and that's what makes her shine.
Can Alice be any more clueless? .......2006-07-20
You have to hand it to Alice MacLeod -- a more clueless, obnoxious, graceless 16-year-old misfit would be hard to find. Susan Juby strikes again, this time with Alice as the Rod and Gun Club's contestant for the very non-prestigious Miss Smithers pageant. With this unifying theme, Juby totally hits her stride. Although the previous book, ~Alice, I Think~, wasn't as developed at this one, it's good to read them in order so you know the background for the running jokes.
Alice is convinced to enter the town talent pageant because of the $400 clothing allowance, writes what was supposed to be an anonymous zine about the progress of the pageant, then finds herself getting beaten up and ostracized yet again because everybody knows all the snarky things she's said about them. Honestly, if you can enjoy the humor of seeing an unlikable but funny narrator much more clearly than she sees herself, and perhaps even being able to relate it to one's own occasional cluelessness with the vague beginnings of self-awareness, Alice's antics and muddles will keep you reading and laughing far into the night.
Just as Great . . ........2006-02-27
This book was by far just as good as its prequel "Alice, I think". It dealt with pretty much the same concepts and issues. Alice is just beginning to actually fall into the realm of "normal" in this instalment and she is very pleased by her progress as is her therapist "Death Lord Bob". She is a candidate to become "Miss Smithers" and like in her other book, she provides a complete "what not to do" manual for all of us who are planning on being in a Beauty Pagent and just a hilarious read for those of us that, after reading about Alice's misadventures, choose to stay home...I think if you enjoyed Susan Jubys first novel "Alice I think" you will find yourself laughing even louder for this one...
i love alice.......2005-07-21
This book is very original and quite funny. Alice is by far the best character in all the teen-girl books i have read.
I have now read this book four times this year and i still love it just as much.
I highly reccommend this book to anyone who loves a fun spirited read
Poor Choice.......2005-06-08
Read this book only if you are thrilled by peeking into the lives of dysfunctional families and wayward teens.
Before you offer it to your teen (or -- heaven forbid -- pre-teen), however, BEWARE!
The author thinks it cute to treat sexual themes as normal conversation. The young reader will be exposed to strategies for `making out' with guys in her bedroom, underage drinking, and generous foul language. Parents are stupid fools, of course. Thoroughly confused peers are the best role models. All of the most objectionable things of the modern TV culture, but watered down for a PG-13 rating and camouflaged with a colorful cover so that it appeals to kids.
Like so much of the current Hollywood fare, this story tries to redeem its own filth by wrapping up with a weak lesson in how not to `do it', all while seemingly winking at the reader with a subtle message that these misadventures are expected, normal, thrilling, and entirely OK.
This book is thoroughly inappropriate for teenagers. Parents: grow a spine and guide your teen to better entertainment: The classics, Verne, Orwell, Asimov, Christie, even Rowling. Don't hide behind the mantra that `you can't protect your kids from everything' - while abandoning them to anything.
There is so much good literature out there. This ain't it.
