" What's Wrong With Traditional Reward System ? ".......1999-09-19
As asserted by Belcher "traditional approaches to compensation do not meet today's business needs and are failing American industry. As the recognition of failure grows, U.S. companies are rapidly adopting alternative reward systems in an attempt to deal with the challenges of an increasingly competitive marketplace."
What's wrong with this traditional reward system?
According to Belcher :
* tradional reward systems compensate, but do not reward.
* traditional reward systems do not reinforce teamwork.
* traditional reward systems do not support strategic business priorities.
* traditional reward systems are inflexible and are not reflective of business results.
Then, variable/alternative pay system vs. traditional pay/reward system.
Variable pay system is defined by Belcher as an alternative compensation system that ties pay to business outcomes and supports a participative management process. Cash payouts are based on a predetermined measure or measures of group or organizational performance.
This study is highly recommended for HR professionals and line managers.

Book Description
"One thing is for certain: Variable annuities have become a part of the investment landscape and show no signs of going away."--The Wall Street Journal. The investing public's love of variable annuities has soared so high that The Wall Street Journal started a weekly column on annuities, "Annuity Watch." The reason for the popularity is simple. Variable annuities give investors the opportunity to receive money every year of their life, no matter how long they live. Guaranteed Income for Life explains the benefits of variable annuities. this informative book: Shows specific ways that variable annuities can help investors achieve lifelong financial security; Proves how variable annuities are in many ways superior to more commonly understood mutual funds; Explains the different types of annuities, with tips on how investors can pick the best product for their unique situations.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent guide to investing and how the annuity fits in........1998-11-30
With all the controversies of variable annuities today, Michael does an excellent job of showing the appropriateness of the annuity. The book was written at the basic level for the investor, capturing an informative overview of the many different investment options such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds and how the annuity fits into the investor's overall investment strategy. I would highly recommend this book to all investors!
Excellent book..........1998-11-25
I've read many different points of view about the value of VAs -- this book explains them clearly. Lane's book shows how tax deferral wroks. He takes you step-by-step so you can see how all the parts relate and why. Read chapters 5 "Suitable Uses of VAs" and ch 18 "Analyzing the Payout" and you will know more than most advisors. Great book congrads.
A great guide for financial planners and end consumers........1998-11-25
Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.
Great book for Annuity Buyers.......1998-11-25
I am a novice investor and had no idea what an annuity was. Lane's book gave me the basics of what stocks and bonds were all the way through how to buy and annuity and use it to create a income to last my lifetime. I highly recommend this book.
A must for those considering purchasing an annuity........1998-10-28
An excellent primer on annuities. Any investor should read this book before considering purchasing an annuity. As a financial advisor I found his explanations simple yet definitive. Written in manner that any investor will be able to benefit from Michael's sound advice. While I believe that in general annuities are the most oversold product in financial circles (not becuse they are great product but because sellers earn huge commissions), Michael clearly demonstrates that annuities are appropriate in certain situations and tells you how to avoid the annuities that were designed to be sold not bought. He shows you what to type of product to look for when annuities are appropriate. Highly recommended.

This is a 452 page workbook/exhibit book on Variable Pay Plans. This is perfecr for the Human Resources Manager/ Director.
Product Description
Organizations that serve people with disabilities can no longer take a passive role in employee compensation, and allow outside forces to wear away at their mission and their highest goals. Proactive compensation means providing incentives to each person in the agency to reach higher achievement, and, ultimately, to be a valued steward of the agency's mission. Variable Pay describes how to structure compensation for home-based teams and for other areas of the agency; how to make constructive use of employee evaluations; how to get a program started; and how to keep it going. Variable Pay also outlines the reasons to pursue a win-win environment, to share financial information with employees, and to tie performance indicators like attendance, utility costs, and quality of interaction to an employee's pay raises.

Description:
During the last several years, spending on prescription drugs in the U.S. increased at a 15% annual rate, with the US$ 178 billion spent in 2002 accounting for more than 11% of health care expenditures in the U.S. This growth has been largely driven by a shift to new drugs, which are typically more expensive than earlier drugs within the same therapeutic category. Recent research has suggested that the shift to new drugs may lower health care spending by reducing the demand for hospitalizations and other health care services. Using a 20% sample of Medicaid recipients from the state of California for the 1993-2001 period, I investigate this hypothesis for antipsychotic drugs-the therapeutic category that has accounted for more government spending than any other during the past decade. Using three different identification strategies, my findings demonstrate that the 610% increase in Medicaid spending on antipsychotic drugs during the study period caused by the shift to three new treatments has not reduced spending on other types of medical care, thus undermining the hypothesis that the drugs have ''paid for themselves.'' Because of data limitations, the findings for health outcomes are necessarily more speculative but suggest that the new medications have increased the prevalence of diabetes while reducing the prevalence of extrapyramidal symptoms among the mentally ill.

The Family Fun Guide to Las Vegas.......2000-05-02
This book was very helpful in finding a hotel for 4 nights in Las Vegas. I am a graduating senior from college this May and my boyfriend and I were looking for a vacation spot that I could afford my half of the trip using my graduation money. The Family Fun Guide to Las Vegas, which I happened to see pop up as a banner ad while doing internet research on Los Vegas, was very helpful in finding a hotel for $40 a night in such short notice!
Thank you,

Book Description
When Deenie sees the brace for the first time, she wants to scream, Forget it... I'm never going to wear that thing. Everyone will know. Everyone!
But the words won't come out. And Deenie, beautiful Deenie, who everyone says should be a model, is stuck wearing a brace from her neck to her hips. For four years-or longer. How will she ever face the hard times ahead?
Customer Reviews:
An excellent young adult story with a strong message.......2007-05-23
Deenie is a beautiful seventh grader whose mother desperately wants her to be a model. Deenie doesn't really know if she wants to be a model, but goes along with her mother's wishes so as not to rock the boat. Whenever she goes on modeling interviews, they seem to always comment about her posture, which makes her mother angry. Deenie promises that she will begin working on her posture. When her school gym teacher notices that Deenie's posture is a problem, she notifies Deenie's parents who take her to a specialist. It turns out that Deenie has adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and that she will have to wear a brace to correct it. So much for her modeling career.
In the tradition of most Judy Blume books, Deenie tackles many issues that teenage girls face. Deenie's mother is constantly harping on her looks and the hopes that she had for Deenie to become a successful model, whether Deenie wanted to or not. She is a typical stage mom who puts both of her daughters into very specific roles: Helen is the brains, Deenie is the beauty. When things don't work out the way that she plans, she takes her frustration out on Deenie. In turn, Deenie wonders if the disease is her fault.
Deenie also has to deal with the issue of being self-conscious about something that is really outside of her control. At the beginning of the novel she focuses on others' deformities: a girl with eczema, which Deenie refers to as "creeping crud," is avoided because of her red and flaky skin; Deenie never makes eye contact with a woman who has a hunchback until her own spine malformation is noticed. Deenie is a story about growing up and maturing, and the change in Deenie from start to finish is evident.
Unfortunately, for some, Judy Blume also tackles teenage sexuality in this novel, which has caused it to be one of the most challenged works of young adult fiction. Personally, I felt the references were mild at best, and completely appropriate. Deenie mentions touching herself as a way of feeling better when things spiral out of control. The subject of teenage masturbation is handled with tact and elegance, and I think people just make more out of it than they should.
As a whole, Deenie was an excellent book, and one I never got a chance to read when I was younger. I'm glad I picked it up now, and can honestly say that it has a lot of good messages for young adults. If you can look past the mild sexual references to the heart of the story, a young girl who has to learn to look past exteriors to see inner beauty--including her own--I think you'll enjoy this story.
It's a great book!!!.......2007-01-31
Do you like to read realistic fiction books? Well, if you do, just keep on reading to find out...
This book is about a girl named Deenie. Her passion was cheerleading. Unfortunally, when she went for cheerleading try outs, she did not make it onto the squad. Deenie felt very disappointed. After her mom, Ma', wanted her to be a model, she refused. Finally, when her mom convinced her to try out to be a model, Deenie felt content that she had an opportunity to be a model. But when she was going to try out to modeling, the teacher said that there was something funny about her posture. Deenie felt as if her world were falling apart. When she discovered that she needed to wear a brace because she had a crooked spine, she felt horrible. She had never worried about how she looked before...
How would she ever face the hard times ahead?
The character I most admired was Deenie. She was decent. When she didn't get to be on the cheerleading squad and her friend Janet did. She didn't say: "I wish you had never been in the cheerleading squad", she just felt proud of her friend Janet. Another character I admired was Janet. She was really kind to Deenie when she was stuck wearing a brace.
I think the author's style was to reveal what it is like to have a disease like scholiosis. When I read the Author's note it said that she had met a girl that had the same problem as Deenie.
I think this was a good book. I like to read books that teach you a lesson. This book taught me that it doesn't matter how you are on the outside, how you look. It just matters how you are on the inside.
I recommend this book to my friends, since they like to read realistic fiction stories too.

Comments on Deenie.......2007-01-24
Rather than an actual review of the book (as I am a mother of 7 now) this is more a few comments.
First, when I last read Deenie, I remember that as usual, Blume wrote with an open, honestness that many writers glossed over...she touched on subjects that were still "taboo" to some degree which is why many libraries "challenged" the book. I remember when all the teenage girls started reading Sooner or Later and Waiting Games after seeing the after school special Sooner or Later and we all had crushes on Rex Smith. It was certainly taboo that a book we were all reading in study hall was talking about s*x, and whether or not Jessie would actually "do it".
Remember, this was before Fast Times at Ridgemont High even... *grin*
We knew girls at school got pregnant, but they conveniently "went somewhere" before they started to show and came back after the situation was taken care of and the schools were even hush hush about mono.
I actually want to recommend this book to parents of teenage girls.
It does touch on some issues of insecurities...and truthfully, it would be GREAT if Blume wrote for our teenage daughters today!
Mothers and fathers REALLY need to be aware of what their children are reading now more than ever!
It really is quite unsettling what you will find if you spend some time browsing through the teen section and reading through some of what the teenagers are reading today. Some of it is nothing less than [...] literature, I kid you not! Our daughters need a bit more of the honestness and innocence without all the trash that accompanies so much of the "so-called" literature they read today!
The emaculate review by me.......2006-09-16
General summary
Deenie is about a girl who's name is Deenie she is very pretty and she is always taken to modeling agencies but they turn her down until on when one of the agencies says she is pretty but there was something wrong with her posture. Later she tries out for cheerleading but her best friend Janet was chosen instead of her. Bummer. Well later on that day she is called into the P.E teacher's office. The P.E teacher tells her that something is wrong with her posture. Then she sends her to the doctor to see what's up with her posture. Well when she goes to the doctor she is sent to another doctor and another after that. Well at the last doctor she visited he said she had adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. She decides instead of wearing a brace she wants surgery. Well it takes her a while of going through her ideas and then she is sent to the doctor again he said she was going to get the brace. She deals all through seventh grade with how she has a problem and might not be able to model.
