This paper reviews the relevant literature regarding the role of control fraud, or major frauds committed by controlling organizational insiders, in the savings and loan crisis. Using both economics and criminological concepts, it contrasts the claims made by ''fraud minimalists'' with those who saw fraud playing a significant role in the crisis. The paper concludes that the economics-based official history of the debacle that sees moral hazard and gambling for resurrection as responsible for major financial losses is not supported by the empirical data generated by criminological research.

Sustainability science analyses society-nature interaction on a variety of spatial and temporal scales. By explaining the link between sustainability and socio-economic material and energy flows as well as with colonization of ecosystems, this paper introduces a conceptual framework for empirical applications featured in other contributions to this special issue. The paper discusses how the proposed material and energy flow accounting (MEFA) framework supports such analyses. This framework is an integrated toolbox to account for socio-economic metabolism and colonization of natural processes; above all, land use. We argue that, even though it is at present impossible to define precision sustainability thresholds with respect to many material and energy flows, the MEFA framework is a valuable tool because it tracks these flows in a consistent manner for regions of any scale over time.

This paper presents the 'MEFA toolbox', which is designed to measure society-nature interaction. MEFA stands for 'material and energy flow accounting' and refers to a set of quantitative methods to trace the materials and energy throughput of societies in a way that can be readily linked to established socio-economic data sets on a national and sub-national level. Within the MEFA framework, accounts of socio-economic material and energy stocks and flows can be linked to land use and its impact on material and energy stocks and flows in terrestrial ecosystems. Using Austria 1950-2000 as an empirical example, we demonstrate how MEFA tools can be used to assess the correlation of physical and monetary growth, and we discuss how changes in socio-economic metabolism and land use are related. We also outline some possible future research directions.

The Early Stages of an Experiment.......2000-01-18

There are several reasons why I rate this book so highly. Here are three: Goman provides an in-depth analysis of HOW various high-tech companies are creating a decisive competitive advantage for themselves by attracting and keeping superior talent; she explains HOW virtually all other organizations (including companies) can do so also; finally, she explains why companies such as Lotus, Cisco Systems, Autodesk, i2 Technologies, and PeopleSoft are "still in the process of evolving." Their individual efforts merely comprise a "beginning." She concludes that "...each company, with each experiment it undertakes, adds another building block lesson learned to the collective evolutionary process." It is commendable for Goman to provide so much valuable information and commentary. It is also commendable that she includes a caution that, in the immortal words of Paul Williams, "We've only just begun."

Various "lessons" to be learned from "the technology frontier" are carefully organized and then developed. In Chapter 1, for example, Goman lists what she calls "The Eight Commandments of High-Tech Culture": 1. Egalitarianism, 2. Freedom, 3. Informality, 4. Trust, 5. Responsibility, 6. Teamwork, 7. High Performance, and 8. Fun. The challenge is to optimize all eight in the most appropriate balance. She concludes the chapter with the first of several lists of Lessons" which will inform efforts to meet that challenge.

For me, one of the most valuable chapters is Chapter 6: "Thriving on Change, Complexity, and Chaos." In it, Goman analyzes how and why several companies have succeeded amidst the "extreme volatility" of continuous restructuring by accepting "constant adaptation to new situations as a fundamental of survival and prosperity." At the end of this chapter, Goman provides another series of "Lessons" which are eminently sensible.

Goman agrees with Debra Engel (former head of HR at 3Com) that it took four hundred years for business organizations to operate successfully in the Industrial Age. "We are only beginning to understand how to operate in the "Information Age." In essence, that is the challenge which Goman's brilliant book addresses with eloquence as well as insight. I agree with her that "organizations don't change. People do -- or they don't." If all this seems relevant to you, I urge you to buy this book, read it carefully, and then review (at least every month or two) the various lists of "Lessons." If you are determined to be a change agent in your own organization and it refuses to support your efforts, I presume to suggest that you find another which will.

WebViking writes a wonderful review of this book. I really agree with his part that says what is missing from the book, you really get a very limited feel of the players and the administrative people.

What really bothered me about halfway through the book is the way Feinstein fawns over the people he is covering. Brian Billick is not arrogant, just misunderstood. Ray Lewis should be deified as the greatest middle linebacker to play the game. Feinstein repeatedly defends Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis from the legal problems they had.

But Feinstein makes a big error with Ray Lewis. Ray went on public record saying he was a terrible 3-4 linebacker. Others said similar, that Lewis was only a star in a 4-3. The 3-4 was the defense that the Ravens played in this book. So it is apparent that Feinstein spent little time with Lewis despite the fawning.

Feinstein appears frequently on TV where he shows he can do something beyond kissing up to the people he covers. He needs to put some of that into his future books, it was sorely needed in this one.

It was interesting living the life behind the nfl media wall. I look back at what I was hearing from the media on the outside during this time. Now I am curious, knowing what I do now,what is going on behind the scenes with my favorite team, compared to what I hear from the local media.

Great Insights for the Recreational Football Fan.......2007-03-06

I watch football every Sunday, college and pros, and so I'm a loyal fan but probably not hardcore. This book's inside view was intriguing. John Feinstein provides an inside look into a year in football following one team. I'm not a Raven's fan, but I much preferred going behind the scenes of one NFL team, learning much about the culture and pressures of professional sports. These elite athletes make great sacrifices both to their bodies and dreams. Coaches are under tremendous pressure and no job security. By the end of the book, I had a much higher respect for those who play and coach football, and for the Ravens.

John Feinstein does tend to do a lot of 2 pg bios of players and coaches that I'd preferred if he'd done less. But that was less the quality of the bios, as they do have a purpose of providing context to situations, then my excitement to stay within the main storyline--the football season and a team. Well worth reading. Sports fans will not be disappointed.

Pretty good account of typical NFL season.......2007-02-14

This book is a pretty well written account of the behind-the-scenes happenings of a typical NFL team--in this case, the 2004 Baltimore Ravens. I thought it depicted the brutality, competition and strategizing very well. I only wish that there this book had been un-authorized. Certainly a lot of the language is captured, but Feinstein softens it up a bit to make the book more presentable to his audience and I'm sure to avoid making the football folks look like rogues.

Additionally, I think we could have had a little more detail on how the game plans are put together, how injuries are treated, what the play calls sound like from the sideline, etc. Having said that, I really enjoyed the notes on players like Chris McAlister and B.J. Sams.
