            Book Description

This conference examines the progress in the field of interacting binaries discussing a number of relevant astrophysical problems regarding the interaction between stars in binary systems, such as the physics of neutron stars and black holes that accrete matter from their companion stars and the study of the end points of stellar evolution, like supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. This proceedings provides an updated overview of both observations and theory. Topics include: compact binaries in globular clusters, millisecond binary pulsars, supernovae from massive binary systems and GRBs, accretion on black holes and microquasars, accretion on white dwarfs and novae, rapid variability and secular evolution of LMX-Ray binaries, supernovae type Ia, as well as secular evolution of high-mass x-ray binaries.

              Book Description

This book reveals the true genius of the Augusta National Golf Club like no other-documenting its original design, chronicling the architectural and design changes over time, and analyzing the philosophies of its creators, Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones. The Augusta National Golf Club will help you understand why the course has a reputation of legendary proportion and how MacKenzie single-handedly changed forever the way courses are built.

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars Amateurish........2007-10-16

I purchased this book and subsequently returned it. For all of its promise regarding documentation of changes to the course and side-by-side drawings comparing the original holes to the present-day versions, it was a supreme disappointment. I am very knowledgeable on the subject of The Masters and the Augusta National Golf Club, and nothing in this book can't be found in the other four or five exceptional books on the history of the tournament and the golf course. What's more, the diagrams of the holes are not in proportion (i.e., the drawing of the 1934 version of a hole is not drawn in the same scale as the drawing of the present version of the same hole); for a course which has been lengthened by hundreds of yards over 70 years, it would be nice to be able to compare such yardage changes in the side-by-side drawings. As presented, however, each individual drawing is shrunken or enlarged to fit the dimensions of the page, and scale is not considered. The drawings are also clumsily drawn and lettered by hand, which is not aesthetically pleasing in the least and is exceedingly amateurish; given the wide range of easily accessible graphic design software now available, this is inexcusable. I cannot recommend this book. Instead, a purchaser is much better off buying the books by Frank Christian, David Owen, David Sowell, or Charles Price.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Vintage Pictures.......2007-07-10

I actually got to walk out on this course. The Augusta National Golf Club grounds crew (a relative of mine worked there) get to play the course one day a year, on "Play Day" in May. I was the lucky guest of my relative.

No picture book or video can do this course justice. You actually have to be there to see how big and "wavy" some of the hills and greens are. Anyway, this book has a lot of good photos, like the one with Bobby Jones and company standing near what today is the 12th hole. I also like the original hole illustrations set next to illustrations of what the holes look like today.

This is a great book to add to your Masters Collection.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read with amazing pictures........2006-03-19

This book was an excellent choice for serious golfers. People who love the game of golf love the Augusta National Golf Course and the Masters. The pictures of the holes and of the course make you feel like you are there. You can feel its beauty. It is a geat book to give as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars The star of the Masters: the course.......2005-08-31

Watching the Masters on TV, it is difficult to get a good idea of what the players face. We get overviews of the hole, words of wisdom from past champions, but rarely do we get to look over the holes in any luxury.

Even rarer is a look into how the course has evolved since it first hosted the Augusta National Invitational in 1934. Interestingly, there are holes that have not been touched. Others have gone through some modification, but it is amazing how much of the original design has held up over the years.

This is all revealed between the covers of this wonderful volume. Included are notes on famous Masters moments, but by far the information on the course, its construction, and alterations are of greater value.

If you plan on watching the Masters next year, pick up a copy and have it on hand while you watch. It will make watching the greatest rove over Augusta National that much more a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Rare images of the original course from 1934!!!!.......2005-04-03

This is the most unique book ever done on the Augusta National. The Author, Stan Byrdy, is a local historian and broadcaster, and an Augusta insider! This is an oversized, coffee table, book. It provides amazing historical information and Masters stories, but the best thing about it is the vintage photographs of each of The National's original holes. The book also has yardage-book-style drawings of each original hole (circa 1934), and the modern-day hole -- so you can make side-by-side comaprisons of how each hole has changed over time. The complete architectural history of each hole is also provided!

This is a very important book for the golf fan, and a must-have for everyone interested in the Masters, or the Augusta National Golf Club, Bobby Jones, and Alister MacKenzie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books on the topic.......2005-04-20

This book has to hit the top of the list when it comes to the topic of continuity and discontinuity between the OT and NT. The authors come from predominantly two theological backgrounds: Reformed (covenant) or dispensational (though D. Moo and W. Kaiser who side on the discontinuity side are not dispensationalists themselves). There are in total 7 parts to the book. Section 1 deals with introduction of the issues involved from a historical perspective (R. Peterson). Section 2 deals with systems of continuity (W. VanGemeren) and discontinuity (J. Feinberg). Section 3 deals with hermeneutics of continuity (O. Robertson) and discontinuity (P. Feinberg). Section 4 deals with salvation from a continuity perspective (F. Klooster) and discontinuity perspective (A. Ross). Section 5 deals with the Mosaic Law and its relationship to the NT (L. Chamblin and D. Moo). Section 6 deals with peoples of God between the Testaments (M. Woudstra and R. Saucy). Finally, section 7 deals with whether the Kingdom is spiritual (B. Waltke) or spiritual/material (W. Kaiser).
All the essays presented are well written and good. However, Chamblin's essay inadvertantly leads the Gospel of Grace to a Gospel of Law. One can see by some of the statements he makes that (pp. 187-200) the "Gospel" he presents is a type of works-righteousness ethic. This is the problem of attaching the Law to the Gospel. Also, Waltke essay's could use some humility and Christian courtesy on the way he interacts with those who oppose his view. Overall, though, an excellent book contributed by many fine evangelical scholars.

                    5 out of 5 stars Stimulating Contributions.......2003-07-25

This book took me a while to get into. But I highly recommend you read it. It makes you think. The authors write valuable articles from a mainly Covenant Theology or Dispensationalist point of view, but often you will find very valuable ideas coming from both sides. For instance, in the articles on The Law of Moses and The Law of Christ, both Chamblin and Moo make excellent points. I find it hard to see how you could align yourself with one side, without admitting that many of the points the other side makes are also important and must be also taken into account.

It also shows that the Dispensationalist camp has much more in it than a quirky take on the Second Coming. No Left Behind nonsense here!
                    Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, hell of a book!.......2005-06-16

"L.O.S.T.", a book by Debbie Federici and Susan Vaught, is a hell of a book. It's excellent. It's about a boy named Bren who enters Live Oak Springs Township (hence the name). Just fate that he stopped there to use the bathroom and met the girl who would take him in an adventure. Jasmina, Queen of the Witches is destined to a find a warrior known as the, "Shadowalker". The prophecies foretold that the Shadowalker will defeat an ancient evil known as Nyre, no one knows who or what it is, well trained and filled with love for the Queen. The story is a suspense with paranormal/fantasy elements. It's well written and totally addictive. I had to READ this book, now!. I couldn't tell which way, and finding out whose Nyre was is difficult and surprising that I didn't even knew who it was. But cannot tell you, you have to get it. L.O.S.T. is a very good, 5 at of 5 in my opinion for having adventure and suspenseful with a twisted surprise.

I enjoyed being carried away to such a magical existance. I am anxiously looking forward to a series of books by these two gifted authors. It would make a darn good movie or tv series. Hollywood wake up. These two ladies are right on target.

                      5 out of 5 stars L.O.S.T : A Good Read!.......2005-01-18

Seventeen-year-old Brenden is on his own for the first time, on his way to visit a friend in San Diego. When he suddenly gets the urge to use the restroom, he stops at the first place he can find: Live Oak Springs Township (L.O.S.T.). Here, he meets Jasmina, the Queen of the Witches who tells him of a destiny he's not sure he wants to fulfill: He is the Shadowalker, the only one who can stop the Shadowmaster's evil plans.

L.O.S.T. is a great tale of two teenagers. One, a girl willing to do whatever it takes to protect her people. The other, a boy thrust into a world he doesn't understand and forced to make a decision: Will he accept that he is the Shadowalker and fulfill his destiny? Or will he run the first chance he gets back to the world he understands?

Full of mystery, magic, and a little romance, L.O.S.T. is a classic tale of the battle between good and evil with plenty of action and surprises guaranteed to keep your attention.

The Shadowmaster has been defeated and the witch sanctuaries are safe for now. But the effort has cost Jazz her life. Trapped in Talamadden, the land of the dead, the former Queen of the Witches is lost in a dark limbo until a spirit guide revives her memories. Desperate to reunite with Bren, she wrestles menacing harpies and shadows to find a way back to the living.

Meanwhile, Bren has become King of the Witches and is now in charge of the witch villages. But he abandons them to search for Jazz, his true love, despite the fact that crossing over to Talamadden would surely kill him. Will Bren and Jazz join up once again to fight evil forces intent on destroying the witches? Or will Bren's impulsive departure leave the witch villages vulnerable to the shadows?

Brenden(Bren) and Jasimina(Jazz) have defeated the Shadowmaster, but have also lost Jazz to the cold grip of death in doing so. Bren misses Jazz. He has rebuilt the path with his brother and now all he wants is his girlfriend, Jazz, back. When Bren learns that there is a chance for him to get Jazz back, he sets his mind on taking that chance. But where Jazz is, few have dared enter, and even fewer have come back. Jazz is in Talamadden, and all she wants is to get back to Bren. And with the aid of a blue peacock, she intends on exiting Talamadden and going back home. Jazz needs to get back home. A spy has entered L.O.S.T., and it is Jazz's duty as queen of L.O.S.T., to make sure the spy doesn't harm her people. When, with the help of Bren, Jazz is free from Talamadden, she must hurry with Bren to stop the spy. When Jazz and Bren reach L.O.S.T., they find a battle raging. The battle leads Jazz back to Talamadden with Bren, where the new Shadowmaster lies in wait to kill them.

I liked this book. What I liked about it was the fact that the relationship of Bren and Jazz seemed to be all consuming to Bren and Jazz. When Jazz was in Talamadden, all she could think about was how much she wished she was with Bren, and all Bren could think about was how much he wished he was with Jazz. Jazz had more important matters on her mind while she was in Talamadden, like how was she going to get out or how would she get out in one piece? While Bren had to think about all of his people, and to make sure that his brother didn't do something stupid. When Bren and Jazz reunite, their relationship stays strong and grows stronger even though they act like jerks to each other, and that was the best thing - they could love each other and be complete jerks to each other at the same time. I also thought the book was good because Jazz and Bren continually had to overcome all the attacks on L.O.S.T. while they had to deal with the major problem on how to make their powers separate, or how to get Todd from being a complete jerk. It was interesting to see them trying to stop one thing while they had to fix another.

I stumbled across L.O.S.T. a couple of months ago at my local library and decided to give it a go. I read it in 2 days and couldn't wait until the sequel came out. I'm glad to say I was not disappointed. I read Shadowqueen in the same amount of time and I seriously hope the author is hard at work on the third installation!

THis paper, given at a conference on the English Martyrs in 1928, traces how man struggled to define the proper relationship between Church and State up until the time of Henry VIII of England. This treatise gives us more insight into the upheaval in England at that time and into the struggles between Chruch and State in our own time.
