Book Description
"A first-class reference book." -- Personnel Management (now People Management)
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-17
Tricky as it may sound to execute, this is a solid, concise introduction to reward strategy and management. Authors Michael Armstrong and Helen Murlis begin with the broadest, most elementary definition of reward strategy and management, but quickly dig down to pay dirt. They provide insider details on job evaluation schemes, antidiscrimination legislation, motivation and the other logistical choices required for reward management. Considered a classic by some in the field, their book offers quite a granular discussion of grade and pay structures, performance management, contingent pay and even the use of consultants. Its primary flaw is its steady use of one author's employer - the Hay Group consulting firm - as the constant exemplar of reward scheme models and methods. We find that this thorough, practical book provides all the ingredients you need to cook up a "best practices" reward management program.

Book Description
Genetically modified crops have become a topic of great interest among scientists, regulators, consumers, farmers, and politicians. Despite their potential benefits, public hostility toward these crops is causing dramatic changes to import/export policies, food safety regulations, and agricultural practices around the world.
Genetically Modified Organisms in Agriculture provides a comprehensive overview of the subject and a balanced look at the costs and benefits of GMO products.
Part I reviews the scientific, economic, and political issues relating to the use of agricultural GMOs. Chapters cover specific applications, regulatory concerns, import/export patterns, international trade issues, and a discussion of future trends. Part II offers a unique look at all sides of the GMO controversies, with short chapters contributed by leading individuals with widely different perspectives. Part III presents a more in-depth look at selected issues plus helpful reference materials.
This book makes the latest information on GMOs accessible to all interested parties, including students, laypeople, scientists, activists, and professionals working in related fields.
* Additional detailed footnotes and references for the academic
* International contributions from the US, Europe and India
* Covers the perspectives of different groups involved in the controversies: governments, environmental agencies, consumers, industrial agencies and the developing world
Customer Reviews:
Nice intro to GMO ag issues.......2006-04-17
This book is a collection of articles and papers about various aspects of GMO foods. While not as detailed as grad-level specialty publications, it's an excellent--and fair--general introduction to GMO crops and the issues that surround the production and acceptance in the market. If you are looking for a strong introduction this is one of the best I've found.

Book Description
The country: South Africa. The period: early 1960s. Billions of snowflakes fell to the ground. Why is the snowflake six cornered, asked Kepler? To each researcher, there is the mystery of 'the thing itself'.
South Africa. Some forty years later. 'The thing itself' is the subject of an International Conference held in the Pilanesberg National Park, attended by over 80 astronomers. The subject: the bar phenomenon. Why bars? Of all the spiral galaxies in our local Universe, over three quarters of them show elongated structures called 'bars'. Masks of cosmic dust have, in a very real sense, kept us in a scientific dark age about the true nature of bars: a cosmic fog has kept a large part of the story of the bar phenomenon untold. The story unfolds in this volume. How long lived is the ever pervasive 'bar phenomenon'? Do spiral galaxies experience bar duty cycles, presenting to us three to four bars during one Hubble time? The world of masks: the duality of spiral structure.
In this volume, containing 20 in-depth review articles and over 75 invited papers and poster-papers, the reader can focus on the Chemical and Mass Masks of the Milky Way, morphological differences between galaxies in the early Universe and today, bar fraction as a function of look-back time, evolved stellar disks at high redshift, gravitational torques of bars, outer rings of carbon stars as evidence for continual gas accretion in spiral disks - and much more.
Unique features of this volume include masterful historical insights from Dr. Allan Sandage on the role of Sir James Jeans, the inclusion of a 90-minute panel discussion (transcribed from tape), the J. Mayo-Greenberg Lecture (delivered by Jean-Loup Puget) and a keynote address of chaos in spiral galaxies, presented by the co-founder of the density-wave theory, F.H. Shu. The year 2004 marks the 40th anniversary since the publication of the Lin-Shu paper in 1964. 'The thing itself' ...its form, its structure, its origin...intrigued Husserl; to us, the bar phenomenon demands the attention of the greatest observers and theoreticians of our age, today. Read their thoughts and explore their mind-sets in this conference volume, exceeding over 850 pages in length.

Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know (no confusing details).......2000-06-01
It an excellent book for all veterinary medicine students as well as DVM.The style is very simple which is important for every book of such nature( in other words you don't have to read it again and again just to understand what authors wanted to say).Bacteria chapter is specially well written although Fungi and Introductory virology don't lack far behind.Speaking as veterinary medicine student I would like to see more photos. As students usually listen to Infectious diseases after microbiology it wouldn't be bad to put a photo of animal having certain disease so students can connect the two(microorganism and the disease)more easily.Pathogenesis is described for every microorganism but at this level students don't always understand it completely. Although it's not extremelly detailed it containts everything from morphology, immunity, serology, treatment, disease, identification etc. If you don't plan to specialize microbiology it's everything you need to know.
