Updating the book since its last publication in 1985, this new edition of the landmark work on human resource accounting has been substantially revised to reflect the current state of the field through the late 1990s. The economies of many nations are increasingly dominated by knowledge- or information-based sectors driven by highly trained and specialized personnel. Whereas physical capital was of the utmost economic importance in the past, the distinctive feature of the emerging post-industrial economies is an increasing reliance on human and intellectual capital. The growing importance of human capital as a determinant of economic success at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels dictates that firms need to adjust to this new economic reality. Specifically, if human capital is a key determinant for organizational success, then investment in the training and development of employees to improve performance is a critical component of this success.
This broad socioeconomic shift underscores a growing need for measuring and analyzing human capital when making managerial and financial decisions. Yet important human resource decisions involving hiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters are often made in the absence of specific information about the different costs and benefits of these particular choices. Human resource accounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuable information by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensating and training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee training programs, increase productivity, and improve managerial decision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacement and turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example:

How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claims adjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every one dollar spent.
How a human resources accounting study revealed that an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled one year's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduce turnovers.

The third edition presents the current state of the art of human resource accounting by (1) examining the concepts and methods of accounting for people as human resources; (2) explaining the present and potential uses of human resource accounting for human resource managers, line managers and investors; (3) describing the research, experiments and applications of human resource accounting in organizations; (4) considering the steps involved in developing a human resource accounting system; and (5) discussing some of the remaining aspects of human resource accounting that require further research.

Learn a Quantitative Method to Interviewing.......2003-10-23

In my experience as a professional recruiter over 22 years, I have worked with over 2000 managers. Most managers have never been taught how to interview effectively.

Where do managers usually come from? Promotions. Usually, what is one of their first tasks? Fill the position they just vacated. Where in this process were they taught how to interview? They then ask themselves "What questions did they ask me?"

Generally, the Human Resource Department will give them written guidelines about the personal questions that may not be asked, but do not teach them how to conduct effective interviews. Why not? In smaller companies, the Human Resource Manager themselves may not conduct effective interviews because their previous position did not require that training, and they are "too busy" in their current position to be trained.

This leaves it up to you, the hiring manager. "Interviewing and Selecting High Performers" by Richard Beatty provides you with an excellent foundation to prepare for an interview. He demonstrates why people are an organization's most important resource (People control all of the resources). He provides you with an exercise to demonstrate the cost of a poor hire - should scare you into becoming a manager who selects high performers.

Mr. Beatty walks you through structuring the interview, provides you with 500 or so behaviorally based questions (However, I would shy away from the personal questions), and suggests a structured interview. His structured interview requires a lot of work. However, at the end, you and your interviewing team will be able to give each candidate a numerical grade. The managers that I have taught to use this system swear by it. Personally, I guarantee that if you ever hire someone who received a "34" on their interview because "my gut told me this is a good person", after being disappointed with their performance, you will never do it again.

Watch out for inaccuracies!.......1999-10-27

On a recent trip to Istanbul, we found many inaccuracies in the maps and other information. Many destination names were misspelled. Our impression was that the guide was written by someone who knew even less about Turkey and the Turkish people than we did.

The biography of ibn Arabi.......2007-07-21

This is the most comprehensive biography in the English language. The detail of this book is realy remarkable. Not only does the author cover the life and teachings of ibn Arabi but also places him in his historical context.

The book details the social and political climate of the time that ibn Arabi lived from where he grew up, his ancestors, his teachers, what he studied and who he studied with, the subjects taught at the time, the places he travelled and the Sheikhs that he met with.

There is a comprehensive study of the teachings of ibn Arabi such as wahdat al-wajud and to some extent his influence on the later Islamic tradition.

Well worth buying, probably the best you can find.

Best Collection of Poetry I've Read All Year.......2003-11-18

If you buy one collection of poetry this year, Mary Ann Mulhern's breathtaking "The Red Dress" is definitely worth your money. Poignant, disturbing and beautifully written, "The Red Dress" chronicles a young woman in the 1960s becoming a nun. The poems deal with loneliness, sexual repression, and religion refusing to alter even as the world of the 1960s comes crashing down around everything else. An amazing book, I recommened this to everyone.

An amazing book.......2006-06-24

I really enjoyed this book, and would suggest it to anyone who is looking for a very good historical book. The book is about a girl named Benita, who is forced to move with her family to an island just off the coast of Ecuador, because of the great depression. The natives that come to see who these strange new people are strike Benita as a bit crazy in the head. However, she comes to like a native named Raul, and they venture off together into the island's beautiful tropics. In the rainforest, she encounters a woman named Yanasa, who which doesn't speak the same language, finds her own way to communicate with Benita. Benita befriends Yanasa, and Yanasa helps Benita grow as an individual, and helps shape who Benita becomes in the end of the book. This book contains a powerful message within its pages, begging for readers to enrich themselves with the book's rich words.

Interesting read!.......2006-03-21

The Great Depression of the 1930s has forced Benita and her family to abandon their comfortable life in Guayaquil, Ecuador for the lonely island of Paita that is uninhabited except for some fishermen and the mysterious, primitive natives. With her father coming up with one mad get-rich-quick scheme after another, her mother falling into a downward spiral of bitter regret, and no friends on the island to share her troubles with, Benita doesn't know what to do with herself.

However, when Raul, the handsome young islander, starts showing interest in her, Benita is given the opportunity to flee her troubled home for an adventurous life in the wild jungle of Paita. But is this what she really wants? And what mysteries and life lessons await her deep in the heart of the jungle?

Red Palms is an interesting and unique book. In fact, it is the uniqueness of the setting and the characters that make it stand out from other adolescent coming-of-age stories. The exotic culture the characters are immersed in and the wild tropical setting give the novel a unique feel to it; a kind of mango-flavored "punch" that is both welcome and refreshing.

There are a few moral problems with the book, however. Throughout the middle and second half of the novel, the main character and her boyfriend are living together outside of marriage. This section of the book also contains a few short but rather graphic "intimate" scenes that the story could have done without.

Also, in the latter half of the book, Benita gets mixed up in the pagan religion of the Paita natives due to a few very odd spiritual encounters with island spirits. Depending upon the religious background of the reader, they may or may not be uncomfortable with this.

Armchair Interviews says: All in all, Red Palms is an interesting read, its strengths lying in vivid imagery and pure originality. If all the reader wants is a fresh summer read, this may be just what they are looking for.

A Powerful New Voice.......2005-02-23

After the Depression forces the Benita's family to fall from a high social and economic place in Guayaquil, Edcuador, Benita and her family are forced to sell all they own and relocate to a remote island, where her father dreams of creating a coconut oil plantation. Life on the island is harsh, both because Benita's family is ill-prepared for farm labor, and because Benita's Papa alternately cheats and insults the islands native people. When Benita falls in love with--and subsequently runs away with--a handsome islander, Raúl, she leaves her father's control behind, only to learn that the idyllic life she imagines is an illusion. Benita must learn to take control of her own life in order to survive. (H) Of the first novels released in 2004, RED PALMS may be the most ambitious--Haycak successfully weaves together a structurally-sound plot, exquisite writing, and a powerful narrative voice. The novel's exotic setting, historical timeframe, and unique cultural back drop make for a rich reading experience, and the character of Benita is one of the most memorable in several years.
