Book Description
Modern managers and students of management are inundated with advice on how to change organisations in order to improve their effectiveness. This book makes sense of all this competing advice, considering the best ways for organisations to develop their strategic capabilities in a fast-changing world. The authors map all the major routes to organisational improvement and classify them into a number of basic categories. Five separate categories, each with its own theoretical provenance, are identified, and each type of approach is assessed and evaluated. The authors ' approach draws on both strategy and human resource management, and highlights the interesting and subtle relationships between strategy and capability. The book is highly practical, enabling the manager or HR professional, through an informed understanding of the advice available, to assess which solutions are most appropriate for their organisation.

Book Description
This book is centered on the "production processes" of crops and pastures, photosynthesis, and use of water and nutrients in fields. It is unique in its combination of great breadth and depth in its treatment of production processes and systems problems. The approach is explanatory and integrative, with a firm basis in environmental physics, soils, physiology, and morphology, in contrast to descriptive or reductionist approaches. Systems concepts are introduced early and expanded as the book proceeds, giving emphasis to quantitative approaches, to management strategies and tactics employed by farmers, and to environmental issues. The systems approach is brought together in the final chapters where production and nutrient cycling are analyzed, for example farms and problems in an uncertain future are considered. The book is designed for use as a text for an introductory course in crop ecology (advanced undergraduates and beginning post-graduate level). In addition, given the wide range of subjects, the integrated references, and the background material included, it can also be considered a "stand-alone" reference work useful to agriculturalists and botanists.
Customer Reviews:
Erroneous, Poorly Organized and Derisive in Places.......2005-03-21
I came across this book as part of a class on quantitative ecology (whatever that may mean). Basically, this text strives to do too much, with little or no emphasis on quality or presentation. Granted, the authors present all the fundamental concepts, defining them succinctly as they are introduced, but in their attempt to show breadth, no particular topic is covered in depth.
For instance, Chapter 10, which covers photosynthesis, could have been separated into three smaller, more focused chapters. The same thing could have been said about Chapter 9, which dealt with water relations. Chapter 9 was especially annoying, because the authors, in an attempt to appear quantitatively rigorous (via the superfluous use of equations), used the same symbols to connote two or three variables, and it was not long before the Professor and the students in the class got confused and gave up on the text.
Then there is Chapter 6, which deals with the aerial environment. The authors repeatedly confused power and energy terms and units. Chapter One was about as bad, but here they repeatedly omitted discussions of the basis and context of their numbers, calculations and equations. I found their decision not to discuss the limitations of the concept of carrying capacity especially disturbing.
Furthermore, the authors tend to be quite derisive in places, especially with regard to Third World cropping strategies (Chapter 5) and organic and bio-intensive agriculture (Chapters 15 and 18). Although I can understand their legitimate scientific criticisms of organic agriculture (and there are quite a few) and bio-intensive cultivation techniques (reliance on human power), their rich country bias shows when they deplore the low level of technological sophistication in the Third World. Apparently, the authors do not seem to realize that not everyone has access to credit and ag extension services, and that assuming that modern farming techniques in America and Australia can be extended to anyone, anywhere. The poor in the Third World do what they can with what they have, and the authors should appreciate this sad state of affairs, even if they don't respect it.
Honestly, the book would have benefitted by some sort of comprehensive editting, as well as a list of symbols and notations at the beginning of each chapter. That way, the reader would not have to flip back and forth to figure out what they meant by this abbreviation or that symbol or equation.
Still, the book did have some good points, those being the final chapter (Chapter 18- Towards an Uncertain Future), a list for further reading at the end of each chapter, and a large and comprehensive bibliography. The discussion on energetic inputs to agriculture in Chapter 15 was decent, but I found their penchant to quote numbers- estimates, projections and statistics, for which there was not a single reference to be off-putting. Finally, the authors do introduce all of the major fundamental scientific concepts underpinning modern economic cropping, so they can not be faulted for this, but the context is extremely limited- mostly the US and Australia, with one or two locations here and there thrown in the mix.
In sum, this is not a good book for study of the various quantitave aspects of ecology, but it might serve as a reference of limited utility. A better book in the same category is W Larcher's Physiological Plant Ecology, which covers pretty much all of the same topics, albeit with much better organization and more focus.
Not for all but great for those who need it........2004-03-12
Crop Ecology is a synthesis of class lecture notes and research collected by the authors over their professional careers. It covers cropping systems from how agriculture is organized at a regional level down to the biochemical pathways of photosynthesis. This is not an introductory text. However, I have found the book to be filled with great examples and illustrations that I use in undergraduate and graduate agronomy instruction. It has been a good investment.

Book Description
This book emphasizes the synergy between high technology and our ability to study and comprehend the universe. It describes the key technologies and ways in which computers affect modern astronomy. The author discusses instrumentation for infrared, ultraviolet x-ray, radio and gamma-ray astronomy, and considers the new generation of telescopes.
Customer Reviews:
best for the CCD ultra-enthusiast.......1999-07-15
An odd combination of the most detailed description of CCD and infrared arrays (their history, use, calibration, optical and electronic properties, drive waveforms, etc.), plus a shallow and general coverage of general optics, software (including a flow chart for software development plus a few screen shots!), telescopes, and adaptive optics.
It is hard to imagine someone who would get something useful out of every chapter; the ultra beginner could learn the basics better elsewhere, but would find the technical chapters hard slogging, while the CCD enthusiast will make the complementary choices.
Exercises suggest the author may have imagined this to be a text book, but the poor general coverage and excellent technical coverage make this instead a reference for techies.

Everything you want to know about lake fishing .......2007-01-06
This unprepossessing handbook is a hand-crafted work of art for any avid lake fisherman, anywhere. Maybe every piece of information won't apply to your favorite spots, but as a personal journal by a master fly fisherman this book is one for your "how to do it" collection.
The Bible for Lake Taneycomo.......2004-05-26
This is an outstanding guidebook to one of the nations best trout lakes! Bryce Meyer describes in amazing detail the lake ecology. He tells what kinds of fish are there, where they are, what they eat, when they eat and how to catch them. The Combat-Fishing Guide is a must have for both the novice and experienced angler.

Customer Reviews:
Should help most Little League coaches.......2006-08-25
Most of the Little League coaches I have come across could probably find something to learn from this book. If you have a player who is stuggling with some part of his game, chances are some of what he or she is doing wrong is talked about in this book.
I've used some of the drills described in the book, and for the most part they've helped. I wouldn't recommend this as your first book if you are new to coaching, but maybe as your second or third...
Only for novices.......2006-03-01
If you are a baseball novice, or if you never played ball above the Little League level, this book may be of value to you as a coach. Otherwise, there is little here that will strike an experienced coach or player as new or insightful.
In general, I've found that the books published by Little League Baseball for coaches aren't very helpful. In fact, the only book I've found on the subject that contains useful, practical advice is "Bean's About Baseball."
excellent!.......2005-02-26
I have read several books and watched several video/DVD's on baseball instruction for Little Leaguers. So far, this is my favorite. Don't let the title fool you, this book isn't just about fixing specific problems, in the process it teaches the proper methods from start to finish, whether it be hitting, throwing/catching, pitching or fielding. Other books, DVD's, videos etc., teach proper methods, but they don't teach you how to recognize problems. This book does. This book points them out for you, like recognizing a tired pitcher. No Little League pitcher will tell the coach he's tired and needs to come out of the game, after reading this book, the coach will know. I compare all other books to this one. I constantly refer to this book for a reference.
so helpful..........2004-05-06
this book be the bombie-(because I was in it-I was one of the batters)! highly recommended. a must read. GO BUY IT!

Book Description
Leaving behind Vienna, Austria, for the wilds of Wyoming, Con is looking forward to spending summer vacation with his grandparents and six girl cousins on the sprawling family ranch. But he arrives to find all is not well. Grandpa Walker has fallen ill, and his recovery is hindered by troubles at the ranch: cut fences, poisoned cattle, trumped-up charges of environmental abuse, and more. Facing financial ruin, the Walkers may lose the ranch, which has been in their family for generations. Could this be Con's last summer in Wyoming?
Con and his cousins devise a scheme to find the cause of all the problems, but the long list of suspects includes a radical environmental group called Mother Earth, some local Native Americans, a neighbor who has always been jealous of the Walkers' success and a wealthy movie star who is poised to swoop in and "take the ranch off their hands." Can the cousins expose the truth before it's too late? (161 words)
Customer Reviews:
Review for Sage Brush Rebelion.......2002-10-31
This is a great follow up on the first Passport to Danger book.
Con's adventures get more interesting every time.
Good, but not as strong as the first book.......2000-09-06
I had really enjoyed Bell's first book, Secret of the Mezuzah, so I was looking forward to Con's further exploits. While it's a good adventure story with interesting characters, I wished that the themes of Indian rights, eco-terrorism and the "new west" had been explored more thoroughly. Bell has already demonstrated that she can handle complicated issues in a sensitive way. Still, it's an entertaining read with strong family values.
Needed Balance.......2000-05-31
I echo the thoughts of previous reviewers on the strengths of this book: a very good middle-school level story, and an excellent description about interrelationships in a functional extended family. I would add that, compared to many "policitcally correct" portrayals of the contemporary West, this story is a nice counterweight by presenting life from the viewpoint of the rancher, as opposed to that of the environmentalist, the Bureau of Land Management and the native American. In this story, the sterotypes are not extended. Everyone in it is portrayed truthfully, meaning less-than-perfect. It is healthy for children to realize that any special interest group, including environmentalists and the BLM, can have less-than-pure motives for what they do. And, I believe the portrayal of a Hollywood star whose self-righteousness turns out to be something less than meets the eye, is a refreshing non-Politically Correct perspective. The point is, it's good to have different kinds of portrayals of people and their motives--that way kids can learn how some folks may behave and allow them to be more prepared to evaluate situations at a deeper level than face value.
A Much Anticipated Sequel.......2000-03-05
I've read a lot of children's literature, being a fourth grade teacher. I read and enjoyed THE SECRET OF THE MEZUZAH a couple years ago, so I was very glad to learn that Mary Ann Bell's book was part of a trilogy. This second book features the same confident, adventurous Con, but this time in an American setting. The central plot and themes were not, to me, as meaningful as the first book, but I really enjoyed learning more about the adventures of Con and his interactions with his family in Wyoming. This book will be very appealing to kids who enjoy books about kids who are "on their own" (like the ever popular Box Car Children books) because Con and his cousins are staying on the ranch without their parents, with only the occasional supervision of their grandparents. The cousins have many adventures taking care of the cattle on the ranch, as well as trying to solve mysteries in town. I'm looking forward to the third book!
The Forgotten Extended Family.......2000-02-20
This is a book about family, a large sprawling mass of a family, that has unique individuals, who are able to come together and help each other and the world they live in. In this age of the noveau-family, with its single parent, or work-obsessed parents, or alternative-lifestyle parents, or whatever, it seems we have forgotten that the family is not just classified by the parents... nor should it be ruled by selfish desires. True, the nuclear family of the fifties is a myth, and in many ways I think we can be glad of that. But the extended family, the kind where there are grandparents, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, cousins, parents, and sons and daughters... that used to be the way all humanity lived. It gave us strength, stability, diversity, chaos, love. There are many reasons why that model is no longer the norm, but we can strive to have a sense of it, and that is what this book gives all who read it. Set in the vast expanses of the West, there is a sense of large empty spaces. But the heart of this quirky family beats loud and happy, and fills all the empty spaces. Read this book, and go talk to someone in your family you haven't talked to in a while. Both actions are well worth the effort.

Book Description
In 1979 the Nevada state legislature passed a bill providing for state control of certain lands within the state boundaries under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management. Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming immediately followed suit. Public land users reacted swiftly and the Sagebrush Rebellion was on.
Westerners, driven by the sheer size of the federal estate (99 percent of BLM lands are located in twelve western states) and angered by what they perceived as undue influence by the environmental movement on federal policies, sought to protect and control the resource and recreational use of public lands that they deemed essential to their state economies.
In this book, R. McGreggor Cawley objectively investigates the Rebellion, looking at the driving force behind the movement, the strategies used by the Rebels, and the consequences of the controversy. He examines how the definitions of key federal land management concepts, such as conservation, influenced policymaking and explores tensions that pitted the West against other regions and the federal government.
In the process, he analyzes James Watt's beleaguered tenure as secretary of the interior and the Reagan administration's proposal to sell federal lands and shows how the conflict created an unexpected division within the environmental movement.
Going beyond the Rebellion, Cawley offers provocative interpretation of events in federal land policy from the 1960s to the 1990s and establishes a framework for assessing future developments in federal land policy.
This book is part of the Development of Western Resources series.
