Stuck in the 1980's.......2006-01-30
I couldn't believe it when I got this thing in the mail. The data set for the software is on a FLOPPY DISK! How many students have even seen one? It's almost impossible to buy a computer with a floppy disk drive these days. Worse yet, the software is antiquated, with an obsolete user interface and a worthless help system. I had to upload the data files to our shared data area so that the other students could download them and write them onto some other kind of drive (USB stick, for example). You MUST have the data saved to a rewritable drive - it won't accept a directory on your hard drive.
What a piece of junk, and at an outrageous price. Oh yes, did I mention that the software doesn't match the written instructions in the book?

Hard to learn when you fall asleep..........2001-05-12
This book, although quite imformative and related to class discussions, was a little boring when I read it. Also, as it usually happens with business textbook it lacked "When good idea goes bad" examples. But, I guess, management never makes any mistakes... that's what you have to understand in it.

Along with the traditional optical window, many new windows have been opened on galaxies in the last two decades, made possible by new developments in groundbased detectors and by space missions that allow detection of photons that are otherwise absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Galaxies can now be observed in the radio, submillimeter, IR, optical, UV, X- and gamma-ray bands, each window allowing us to learn more about galactic components and properties. These developments have also imposed the view that a deeper understanding of even normal galaxies requires a panchromatic approach, making use of all of the data gathered from the different windows to synthesize a comprehensive physical image of these complex astronomical systems.
Windows on Galaxies presents a comprehensive view of galaxies through all the available windows, bringing together both theoretical and experimental approaches in the form of a series of reviews reporting the most recent developments complemented by contributed talks and discussions.

The sixth workshop of the Advanced School of Astronomy examined galaxies through all available wavelength windows. Over the last twenty years, new wavelength windows have been opened in astronomy which have created many new possibilities for the observation of the properties of galaxies. The outcome of the meeting clearly stated that the approach towards the studying of galaxies should be
panchromatic.
Each window, from radio to gamma-rays, shows different components, and a synthesis of this knowledge presents astronomers with a comprehensive physical image of these astronomical systems: star formation, evolution of galaxies, molecular contents, gas flows, interstellar matter and properties of galaxies in the several wavelength fields are discussed in this volume.

At the close of active life (well, near the close - Arne will turn 90 in Jan.2002!) Norwegian eco-political philosopher Arne Naess is interviewed by spry young American academic David Rothenberg.
Subjects span Arne's entire life consciousness. In easy-to-read, question-and-answer format, this slim volume tells the lay reader many fascinating personal details. Rothenberg & Naess discuss -- inter alia -- Arne's rejection of his mother, childhood obsession with tiny things, the financial help from his older wealthy businessman brothers that freed Arne to live a charmed "thinking" life, and Arne's subversive leadership in the WWII Norwegian Resistance.

Now Ashley isn't sure it's worth showing up to the country club at all -- never mind what she's going to wear. As the seconds tick down to the year 2000, will some fairy godmother appear to save the night so that Ashley can dance with her Prince Charming and welcome the new millennium?

Ashley's life is unfair much of the time. Her mother died when she was very small and her father remarried to a woman with twin baby girls. Then Ashley's father died, leaving her to live with her stepmother and two bratty stepsisters. It isn't that her stepmother is really mean to her, it's just that she seems to ignore all of the awful things her twins do to Ashley, like steal her stuff and listen in on her private phone calls.
Her stepmother expects Ashley to do housework and babysit the twins, and she allows the younger girls to dress exactly like Ashley, which embarrasses her. There is only one thing that Ashley is looking forward to--the New Year's Eve party being held by five of her classmates, wealthy and privileged kids who can afford to hold a gala event at the country club. Ashley isn't sure how she made the very exclusive guest list, but she hopes that it was Trevor, the boy she has a crush on, who added her to the list. She is certain that after the party she will be Trevor's girlfriend.
The problem is that Ashley's stepmother insists she forgot about the party and Ashley should have reminded her. Her mother is flying in from Florida for the holiday and Ashley's stepmother wants to take her out and show her a good time. That means Ashley will be expected to ditch her special plans in order to babysit her monstrous stepsisters. Ashley doesn't know what to do. She can't bear to miss this party, but she doesn't see any way she can manage to go.
I liked the setup of this story and the parallel to the Cinderella story, although I think it went a little far in showing how oblivious Ashley's stepmother was. I liked the character of Ashley's stepmother's mother. She was the most interesting character in the story.
I thought the behavior of the twins was really a little too over the top for any parent to ignore. Ashley's character was pretty shallow. I agreed with Ashley's stepmother that it wasn't right for Ashley to choose popular kids she barely knew over her two best friends.

Ashely Ella Toral is your typical teenage girl. She has two best friends, a stepmom and two annoying little step sisters. At the brink of the 21st century, Ashley is invited to the most important party of her life thrown by the five most popular kids in school (including the love of her life), only to find that her stepmom, Phyllis, is going out with her 80 year old, afraid to fly, grandmother! She has to babysit her bratty, soap opera addicted twin stepsisteres! Ashley is determined to get to the party for her Prince Charming at the turn of the century,but cant get rid of the "devil twins."
Cinderella 2000 is a wonderful fairy tale with a modern twist. As I read the book, I felt like I was in Ashley's shoes--like I was fighting with her stepmom and little sisters. The balance of narration and dialouge made the book an easy to read, quick page turner. It was a breeze to finish, but captivating at the same time.
Cinderella 2000 is a funny, heartwarming book. I would recommend the book to anyone who loves a good fairy tale, with a good happily ever after.
Okay...but not the best........2004-05-05
This book is about a girl named Ashley who is a supposed orfan(or so she thinks)Basically Ashley wants to go to this snobby contry club to celebrate New Year's 2000 celebration.But her stepmother Phyllis won't let her go because Phyllis's grandmother is flying in from flordia.I have a few things to say about this book.First of all ashley acts like a BRAT!!!! all through the book.Second she is always mean to the twins(though I can understand the phone)Third Ashley acts like her friends don't matter to her. I think she is just a big BRAT! This book was okay but nt as good as the origanal cinderella.
Cinerella 2000 emmas review.......2003-08-31
Cinderella by Mavis Jukes is a great book. It is a modern day Cinderella. It is about this girl Ashley Ella Toral, who is 14 and is going though the same problems as a girl at that age but also had to deal with being an orphan. She has to live with her mean stepmother who hates her and to younger twin stepsisters who invade her space reads her diary and more. Phyllis Ashley's stepmother has no clue how to be a parent at all either. Trevor the boy Ashley has a huge crush on asked her to go to a dance with him. The only thing that is wrong with it is she might have to baby-sit the braty unbearable twins!
This is a great book for girls 7-10 and I would highly recommend it to girls who like the storey of Cinderella.
