Book Description
This investigation by one of the leading authorities on commodity trading examines the failed commodity market in developing countries and current trading arrangements. Peter Robbins looks into the possible solutions being proffered--from ideas to exploit new niche markets and improve quality--to more radical notions like fair trade, and shows how they all fail to measure up to the scale of the disaster facing the Third World. Instead, he argues developing countries must take a leaf out of supply side economics, and themselves take the measures required to bring supply and demand into a better balance that will secure them far higher and more stable prices than today.

Product Description
This unique book provides a clear and lucid description of several aspects of astrophysics and cosmology in a language understandable to a physicist or beginner in astrophysics. It presents the key topics in all branches of astrophysics and cosmology in a simple and concise language. The emphasis is on currently active research areas and exciting new frontiers rather than on more pedantic topics. Many complicated results are introduced with simple, novel derivations which strengthen the conceptual understanding of the subject. The book also contains over one hundred exercises which will help students in their self study. Undergraduate and graduate students in physics and astrophysics as well as all physicists who are interested in obtaining a quick grasp of astrophysical concepts will find this book useful.

An Invitation to Astrophysics.......2007-04-25
I have been trying to find a book like this for years because I want a deeper understanding of the many exciting contemporary issues of astrophysics. Older, classic texts were of little help, but Prof. Padmanabhan's book has become the perfect companion and guide to my more fully appreciating today's technical papers, ranging from solar system physics to cosmology, published in journals like Science and Nature.
But you must be facile with theoretical physics at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level and be willing to fill in the missing, but usually obvious, algebraic steps between formulae to get the most from this book. The book is hard, but not dry and Prof. Padmanabhan accompanies you with many personal comments as if you were in his class.
Even if you can only work through a few pages at a time, the rewards are high. I will leave with two personal experiences: (1) in the spirit of Feynman, Prof. Padmanabhan gives a physically intuitive development of the classical radiation field in two or three pages that I wished I had seen as a student many years ago, and (2) in one and a half pages, he cogently discusses Lagrangian points and the Roche limit that, in the former is relevant to LISA, the orbiting gravitational intevferometer, and in the latter quantifies the iconic picture of a white dwarf capturing gas from its bloated red giant companion.
Michael Bozoian, Ph.D.
Twinkle, twinkle, little equations..........2006-12-09
This book, while an introduction to astrophysics, really is an introduction for those already at a fairly high level of sophistication with theoretical physics and mathematics. According to the preface, Padmanabhan states, `I expect the reader to know the basics of classical and quantum mechanics, special relativity, electrodynamics, etc.' The algebra and calculus requirements are at the very least to the advanced undergraduate level - I've had calculus through differential equations, statistics and abstract algebra, and still found this a very challenging text. The development of the subject is carried forward as much by mathematical equations as it is through narrative description - this is very far from being a text for the popular press; Stephen Hawking made the comment in his book, `A Brief History of Time,' that his publisher warned against equations, stating that for every equation one loses half the readership - by that calculation, the readership here becomes very small. I do not say this as a criticism of the text or its contents, but simply to advise those expecting a more layperson-friendly text that this is not that book.
For those with education and background in physics and mathematics who might want a rigourous introduction to astrophysics, this might well be the book to use. The development of topics is sound. There are occasional flourishes of creativity in the text, but for the most part, this is a straight-forward presentation. General relativity is introduced early, along with other issues of gravitation, radiative processes and topics dealing with matter. These set the stage for the more familiar astrophysical topics of stellar evolution and star structures, star remnants (black holes, white dwarves, supernova, etc.), cosmology and early universe (including the early minutes and earlier, in which so much work has been done in the past few decades), large scale structures such as galaxies, and how galaxies can evolve and demonstrate activity.
For those who find mathematics an impediment, this is not the right text. For those who have a solid background in physics and mathematics, this book will be a good choice. Padmanabhan is author of a much larger series on astrophysics, a three-volume set published through Cambridge - it is clear that he knows his topic, but as a self-study, this is a not a cake-walk for most.

Book Description
Molecular techniques are proving invaluable in determining the phylogenetic status of potentially endangered species, for investigating mechanisms of speciation, and for measuring the genetic structure of populations. It is increasingly important for ecologists and evolutionary and conservation biologists to understand and use such molecular techniques, but most workers in these areas have not been trained in molecular biology. This book lays out the principles and basic techniques for the molecular tools appropriate for addressing issues in conservation, and it presents case studies showing how these tools have been used successfully in conservation biology. Examples include the genetic analysis of population structure, various uses of DNA in conservation genetics, and estimation of migration parameters from genetic data. Wildlife managers, as well as researchers in these areas, will find this a valuable book.
Customer Reviews:
Connecting genetics with conservation.......2000-09-25
This 28 chapter compilation does an excellent job of furthering the growing connection between the disciplines of population genetics, ecology, systematics and evolutionary biology with those of conservation biology and risk management.
Several contributing authors discuss a particular molecular technique and how it can be applied to a specific question in plant and animal conservation biology. Each chapter does an exceptional job in discussing the relative cost, time, advantages and disadvantages of using a specific molecular technique and its relevancy to a specific question. Additional chapters review approaches to analyzing molecular data and their utilization in several case studies. For each case study, authors provide hypotheses, detailed background description of the organism, the molecular technique which best suits the question pursued, elaborate discussion of the data, and finally, insight that has been gained from the study and can be utilized for further management and conservation. In depth discussion of how inferences can be made from molecular genetic data in defining a tangible "unit" for conservation in management programs makes this section the definitive strength of the volume.
This volume reinforces the notion that the largest threat to populations and species today is our little understanding of their environment and the protection it demands. This compilation successfully explores this topic in both theory and application and it defines the future of molecular approaches in conservation biology.

REMEMBER TO GIVE THE ONE YOU DON'T WANT TO A CHANCE.......2002-07-18
I loved this book I read it back in middle school and liked it but i found it the other day cleaning my room and decided to read it again since I couldnt seem to remember what it was about. I am 20 now and realize how much I can relate to this book becasue the person I feel in love with is the one I wouldn't give a chance too. I think it gives hope to all those girls out there that are sitting at home wishing to grow up and fall in love. Cause even if it seems like it will never happen it will and in the most unexpected way. Just read the first chapter and you won't be able to put it down trust me I couldn't and I hate to read. I was going to sell it but it's such a good book that I decided to keep it and let my niece that starts middle school this year read it casue I know she'll love it and so will you!

I read this book becase I love the water . The part I likedthe most is when the baby-sitter went to buy clothes .Becase all the clothes were more than $300 so she just got a dress that did not cost to much .This isbook is very fun to read!
Pathetic..................1999-06-23
Oh please! How dumb do Francine Pascal and Kate William really think we are? I mean Liz falls for a 'quiet reserved writer' who just happens to be a 'pop/rock star' - as if. Who is going to believe that a really famous - and busy (yes, not all 'rock stars' get the chance to go on vacation and disguise themselves as 'writers') guy is going to fall for one of the Wakefield twins when there are, like, millions of women out there who are better looking, older and wealthier than Elizabeth Wakefield. Oh, pardon me - I am forgetting that this IS Sweet Valley (home to the 'beautiful Wakefields and their perfect existence'). Don't waste your time - there are better SV books out there (no, really).
What a summer!.......1998-12-12
Liz and Jess are baby-sitting in Malibu! Jessi si sitting for a poor family while Liz is living in a mansion. Liz meets a quiet writer and loves him instantly. Then she finds out is real identity after he is almost murdered. Can Liz trust him? A great book. Most Sweet Valley fans probably haven't read it yet.
