Book Description
Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth and development and a key agricultural input-but in excess it can lead to a host of problems for human and ecological health. Across the globe, distribution of fertilizer nitrogen is very uneven, with some areas subject to nitrogen pollution and others suffering from reduced soil fertility, diminished crop production, and other consequences of inadequate supply.
Agriculture and the Nitrogen Cycle provides a global assessment of the role of nitrogen fertilizer in the nitrogen cycle. The focus of the book is regional, emphasizing the need to maintain food and fiber production while minimizing environmental impacts where fertilizer is abundant, and the need to enhance fertilizer utilization in systems where nitrogen is limited. The book is derived from a workshop held by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in Kampala, Uganda, that brought together the world's leading scientists to examine and discuss the nitrogen cycle and related problems. It contains an overview chapter that summarizes the group's findings, four chapters on cross-cutting issues, and thirteen background chapters.
The book offers a unique synthesis and provides an up-to-date, broad perspective on the issues of nitrogen fertilizer in food production and the interaction of nitrogen and the environment.

The standard by which all others should be judged .......2005-03-08
This book is the yardstick that all other field guides should be measured against. Detailed and concise, Hammerson gives an excellent account of Colorado herpetofauna. I have two copies, one for my car and one for home.
A Natural History Treasure!.......2000-03-27
For those only mildly interested in snakes, lizards, frogs and other 'creeping things', this book will change your life's direction forever! The first edition of this book was a treat: a field guide to the herpetofauna of Colorado, complete with photos, descriptions and distribution maps. I was highly pleased with it, and looking forward to the release of the second edition (due out in 1998, I think). The wait was worth it! This new edition contains not only the photos, some breathtaking in their beauty and clarity, and distribution maps, etc, but also pretty much everything one would ever desire to know about herpetofauna in the Southwest. This book now contains chapters on biogeography, examining all the Colorado habitats, conservation status and legislation, human interactions, viewing methods, and each Colorado species has its own and very thorough entry. As a professional herpetologist, this book is invaluable to me wherever I happen to be, Colorado or no. As a complete amateur, this book would open up a mysterious world! It's too heavy for a field guide, that's why there's those terrible Audubon things (although Patterson is good), but terribly useful for when you get home again. Buy this book, now!

I am 41 years old and took my first swim lesson last week. I had a traumatic experience as a child which caused me to get out of the pool and never go back in for lessons - until now. I knew nothing about where to begin learning to swin as an adult. Reading the book and watching the companion video gave me an excellent basis to begin my lessons. The first night I was making it across the pool and had never swam an actual stroke prior to then. I believe this book and video made it possible!

This is a wonderful book that teaches you the most efficient swim stroke possible. I had heard of some of the Total Immersion techniques but this book lays all of them out with step by step drills and techniques. You can teach yourself the techniques easily without the expensive weekend class. The stroke is based on hydrodynamics. A boat's hull speed is determined by the hull length at the water line. The longer the waterline the faster the hull. This technique teaches you to get longer and leaner by stretching one arm out front until the other one comes to replace it. It teaches you to balance on your bouy (chest) which levels your body, brings the hips up and almost eliminates the need to kick. It also teaches you to swim and glide on your side, not flat, so water resistance is minimized. The stroke gets it power from the powerful torso/hip rotation when switching from side to side thus saving your arm and shoulder muscles. This stroke has it all and the very finest swimmers use it. It has opened up a totally new world for me and my swimming. Easier, more efficient, more powerful and more relaxing. You have got to try this out!

Book has some great ideas and techniques, but repeats a lot. The DVD ought to come bundled with it as there are too few pictures.

This book offers some good ideas but so much the text is devoted to selling itself (heck, we already bought the book!), and the key sections on the drills are hard to follow and represent a rigid series of exercises that I for one found impossible to follow past an early point. Overall, I wish I had bought a different book to help me improve my swimming technique.
Total Immersion: A new way to swim.......2007-09-10
This is a fun, cleverly written instruction /training manual for the everyday swimmer. I am a competitive masters swimmer and I found many of the drills useful to me as positive reenforcement for the way I train and think. Swimming should be enjoyable as well as invigorating, and swimming the TI way is both. The basis of training the mind so the body works efficiently is not a new concept, but the author brings these basics to a different concept for the aquatic enthusiast, whether novice or traditionally trained. Practice and learn the TI way of swimming and you may never go back to the old traditional ways.

Different than I expected.......2005-05-18
I'm not sure what I expected, but the stories were very personal. I liked that, and it captured the region well. As a true city-folk, I read this book prior to my recent visit to the Powell River region. It prepared me well for what I was to find there, and I appreciated the flavor of the region more by reading this book. Unfortunately, I didn't get to experience some of the secret spots the author highlights, since many of these locations are impossible for tourists to access without a boat. But the stories gave me a flavor of life in this region. At times, it wasn't clear how much of this was fiction and how much was factual, but after a few chapters that didn't seem to matter. It was simply a good book to describe a unique geographic area that is very difficult to reach (requires at least two ferries). The author's website indicates that there will be a followup volumbe (Up the Main). I'll definitely be first in line to buy it.
Powell River Adventures and Stories.......2005-03-20
I love to read about the local area and find new places to visit. I recently found "Up the Lake" and the cover photo caught my eye. I was intrigued by the word stories in the title and wasn't disappointed. The author's personal reflections and "stories" were fun to read. The maps and pictures were an added bonus and gave me ideas of places to visit and things to try when I get time off this summer. Good read.

My first Choose Your Own Adventure book!.......2002-09-19
For me, this was the book that got me addicted at the age of 9! Edward Packard is a genius and one of my American heroes for inventing such an amazing literary genre! Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey? is a great mystery, full of suspense and interesting character development. It also stands out from the early CYOA books because it only contains 14 endings, thus making for a longer story.
This book was also one of the few selected to be published as a Grey Castle Press hardcover!

Choose Your Own Adventure books, I mean the Bantam Books ones, are the best! I want them all! It's amazing - the earlier ones are from around 1980 or even before, and can still be enjoyed thoroughly, as if they were written yesterday!

This may in fact be the best of the entire "Choose Your Own Adventure" series, which is saying something, since this was always an interesting series, especially in its early days. Packard is the master of the genre, and the tangled web herein is suspenseful and atmospheric. Lots of fun for kids.

This book is one of the worst books I have read. It is a mystery book where you are the detective but the book never really tells the solution to the mystery.No more comments.

Nostalgic Reminder of My 80's Childhood!.......2000-04-05
"Choose Your Own Adventure" books ROCK! I rememberspending many a late night in bed with a flashlight reading theselittle literary gems endlessly, trying to make sure I'd tried every possible story option. These books come out once a month like clockwork and I'd be first in line with my allowance to purchase the latest in the series. All the books are terrific, but I particularly remember liking "Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey" and "The Mystery of Chimney Rock". These blooks are long out of print, but well worth the search!
