Book Description
The conservation of genetic resources is vital to the maintenance of biodiversity and to the world's ability to feed its growing population. There are now more than a thousand genebanks worldwide involved in the ex situ (meaning "away from the source") storage of particular classes of crops. Since the 1970s, the eleven genebanks maintained by the centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have become pivotal to the global conservation effort. However, key policy and management issues-usually with economic dimensions-have largely been overlooked. This provided the impetus for a series of detailed economic studies, led by IFPRI, in collaboration with five CGIAR centers: CIAT (based in Columbia), CIMMYT (Mexico), ICARDA (Syria), ICRISAT (India) and IRRI (Philippines). This book reports these studies and discusses their wider implications.
Book Description
Where is the earth? Where is the sun? Where are the stars?
Now in a Dragonfly edition, here is an out-of-this world introduction to the universe for children. With earth as a starting point, a young astronaut leads readers on a tour past each planet and on to the stars, answering simple questions about our solar system. In clear language, drawings, and diagrams, space unfolds before a child's eyes. Colorful illustrations, filled with fun and detail, give children a lot to look for on every page and a glossary helps reinforce new words and concepts. A terrific teaching tool, Me and My Place in Space is an easy and enjoyable way to introduce the concept of space to the very youngest astronomers.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, but inaccurate........2007-10-01
I liked "Me on the Map" MUCH better. I ordered the space book because the map book was very useful in explaining the concept of map representation to my four year old. This book simply wasn't as good. It is inaccurate, also, as it includes Pluto as a planet, though it is no longer considered to be one.
Me and My Place in Space.......2007-04-01
This book is great! Excellent teaching tool. Engaging for children.
Great resource for home or classroom.......2007-02-14
I bought this book to introduce a unit on Saturn for my third grade class. When I first scanned the book I thought maybe I'd made a mistake and bought something beneath their level. Not so! I read it aloud to them & they loved it. They all wanted to take it home to read again.
Great non-fiction for young Children........2006-10-16
Great illustrations, and informative non-fiction for preschoolers. I am a big beleiver in improving young children's vocabulary through non-fiction reading. This book series will help keep your youngsters attention while you talk to him/her about the world around us. A couple sentences per page. If you want to read another science series with more reading and more detail, but still great illustrations try the "Let's read and find out science" series including "Why Frogs are Wet" and many others.
Wonderful for my 1 year old.......2005-12-16
My one year old daugher and I read this book at least once a day. She loves the illustrations-like the space suit with pop beads for the oxygen line. It is not too wordy, so she stays engaged, yet provides all the basic information about our solar system and planets. She can now identify the pictures of the moon and the earth by name and knows that earth is where she lives. An animal lover, she also likes that the cat journeys into space. My daughter and I often look at the night sky, and she knows the ASL signs for moon and stars. I think that is why she loves this book so much despite her young age. This is a wonderful introduction to basic astronomy, and has spurred me to order more books on space for us to share.

Book Description
Throughout Pennsylvania, within the state forest system, are 61 officially designated Natural Areas, each offering a bit of wildness deemed worthy of protection: rare bird breeding sites, stands of old growth trees, fragile wetlands, ice age remnants, mineral rich mountainsides. To experience firsthand the unique features of each natural area, nature writer Charles Fergus spent a year visiting all 61. In this information filled book, he reports on what he found, offering readers a guided tour of some of natural Pennsylvania's most distinctive places. He also provides information on how to visit the areas, each of which is open to the public. Includes a description of a yearlong tour of some of the state's most interesting and scenic wild features.
Customer Reviews:
Well Off the Beaten Path in PA.......2002-10-30
This is a very enjoyable and informative guide to the 61 natural areas in Pennsylvania, which are usually far from the beaten path of the cities, major highways, and even well-known hiking trails. Fergus spent a whole year personally exploring every one of these areas, and proves it with his first-hand descriptions. Therefore this book is based on real experience, and was not written by someone who has never been to the places they're writing about (such as the error-prone Longstreet Highroad Guide to the Pennsylvania Mountains, which I can't totally recommend). As an extensive hiker in PA myself, I've been to some of these natural areas and can attest to Fergus' accuracy. He focuses on the flora, fauna, and topography of these natural areas, and tips on how to get to the more remote ones that may not even be accessible by trail, all in lively prose that walks the fine line between poetic and overly sentimental. Fergus tends to avoid the bad news on some of these areas, especially pollution, which would make the chapters on Little Tinicum Island (near Philly) and Sheets Island Archipelago (almost within sight of Three Mile Island) more informative; plus the complete absence of maps is a problem for the larger natural areas. But still, this book greatly succeeds in making the outdoorsy Pennsylvania fan yearn to visit these hidden secrets.
The quieter, wilder alternatives to busy state parks.......2002-06-27
The landscape of Pennsylvania has endured such intensive logging, mining, and urbanization over the years that it's a wonder any wild places still exist within its borders. But they do, and Charles Fergus has hiked in all 61 of them. The natural areas he's talking about here are located in state forests and have few recreational amenities, so they're open only to foot traffic. Habitats range from the tidal waters around Little Tinicum Island in the Delaware River to the forested crest and tower at the top of Mount Davis in Somerset County, the highest point in the Commonwealth. Many of these areas gained governmental protection within our lifetime, and I'm sure other natives will learn about sites they never heard of before. Basic road atlases don't usually acknowledge these places. Fergus provides detailed directions for access, writes about the uniqueness of each site, and recommends the best seasons for visits. His commentary is accompanied by black and white photos and may include smatterings of geology, history, anthropology, botany, and zoology. Wildlife ranges from bears and bobcats to salamanders and the tiny critters they feast on. There are bird migration routes, sites for butterfly aficionados, many tall trees and rare plants. A path falls onto land where chips of indigenous tools can still be found, and another turns onto a trail made more recently by an illegal all-terrain vehicle. A map, list of resources, and list of forestry addresses contribute to the usefulness of this guide. Scanning just a few pages will have you reaching for your boots and daypack in no time.
Book Description
A Wall Street Journal writer spends a season in a fantasy baseball league to explore the inner workings and contagious passions of one of the countryÂ's most popular pursuits
Every spring, millions of Americans prepare to take part in one of the oddest, most obsessive and engrossing rituals in the sports pantheon: rotisserie baseball, a fantasy game where armchair fans match wits by building their own teams. Starting with a player Âdraft before the Major League season, contenders spend six months scouring the box scores to see if their handpicked players can outperform the opposition. ItÂ's a pastime that threatens to overtake traditional baseball in the passions it generates.
In 2004, Sam Walker, a sports columnist for The Wall Street Journal, decided to explore this phenomenon by talking his way into Tout Wars, a private league generally reserved for the nationÂ's top experts. Using his baseball contacts and access to locker rooms, Walker spent a year trying to dredge up information that might give him a competitive edge over his eccentric cast of competitors. But in his quest for victory he also endeavored to settle the great question that divides modern baseball thinkers: Can excellence be predicted by statistics alone or is the human element more important?
Together with his crack research team, Sig (a statistician) and Nando (a baseball savant), Walker finds himself possessed by the game and determined to win at any expense, spending weeks on the road interacting with his real Major League players and trying to Âmanage them. We follow his descent into sleeplessness, panic, triumph (temporarily), treachery, and even consultations with an astrologer as he keeps his ever-blearier eyes on his elusive goal. The result is one of the most entertaining sports books in years and a matchless look into the heart and soul of our national pastime.

Riveting.......2007-09-19
Held my attention from page one to the end. Well written, fascinating and inspiring. I loved it.
My only complaint is that the book drags a tad in the middle. It's probably a little long and I sensed the author was padding a bit, which was completely unnecessary. But it was a fun summer read.
My other favorite summer read, although barely related, was Cat's Cradle. Cat's Cradle
Must read for fantasy sports fans.......2007-09-06
What a great ride to go on... side by side with Sam Walker in pursuit of the elusive, but validating, title of fantasy champion. As a fantasy sports enthusiast it was easy to identify with all the particpants, charatcers, methodologies and most importantly experiences. The ups and downs, the good nights and bad, are all accurately on display and this is an excellent representation of what it is to play fantasy baseball. I only wish their had been a sequel! Hats off to a touch of history, a smattering of shared experience, and a ton of inside jokes and laughs...
Humor and History.......2007-08-12
I picked up this book because it was in the $6.99 bargain bin and it related to one of my interests, fantasy sports. It was worth far more than th5 $6.99 I spent. Sam Walker provided an everyman angle to the story and recounted his experiences turning into a fantasy sports junkie, something many of us can relate to. Every fantasy sports concept is explaining without confusing jargon and he provides a mildly interesting history of rotisserie baseball. All in all a great book at a great price.
The REAL Stuff.......2007-06-26
Whant some "Dirt" on some of the biggest names in the game? This is the book for you. Funny and thought provoking. The writer takes the time to go into a world that he only slightly familiar with and the results are just amazing as to where Fantacy: sports have gone. Get it, read it!!
The Tout Wars.......2007-04-10
This hilarious romp into the world of fantasy league baseball will keep fans laughing. It's pure entertainment for all new roto junkies!

Customer Reviews:
Dont Buy This Book.......2004-02-15
This book is by far the worst travel book I have ever read.
If you are a serious traveler, this book is not for you.
If you are someone on a Sunday outing go ahead buy it.
This book doesnt give you any info on ways to reach places by public transportation. The restaurant reviews arent much help and the author spends too much time reviewing Fort Worth.
Also the entertainment section is horrible. There is much more to do in Dallas than the book reflects.
In Gomer Pyle style, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.......2001-01-28
Wow. I've been in Dallas/Irving area fifty years (since 6 mo. old) and when I picked up this book to take a look, I was amazed at all the places to go I didn't know about! I bought a copy and have enjoyed browsing its offerings! What a great gift for anyone new to the area. What am I talking about? I'm not new! It'll make a great gift - period! A must though for newcomers - hey, real estate people, what an idea for new home buyers coming into the area! And there's so many different great tid bits of info. Thanks to the author for all her work making the Metroplex a breeze to enjoy!
Right in my own backyard.......2001-01-24
I picked this book up as a gift for a client who was staying a week in Dallas and had never been to Texas before. He went through the book and picked places he wanted to go, and apparently had a grand time, because he still raves about his trip.
As I didn't get the book back, I had to purchase another copy and was surprised to see how many interesting places there are in the Metroplex that even I didn't know about (and I've lived here for nearly forever.) I've since recommended this book to my company for future visiting clients and trainees.
Great source of information, excellent organization and primo insight on "must sees".

Baby Help!.......2006-05-22
I loved this book it is the best book for a teen to read. In the book the girl is getting abused by her boyfriend then they have a child together and the abuse is more severe than before. so what happens towards the end the girl decide that her daughter dosen't need to see her father beating on her mother so she decides to move to a home for abused women and she stays for six weeks and then decides to move with her mother and her mothers friend. When she moves with them her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer and the girls mother goes through chimotherapy and radiation therapy . The point of the book is that women don't neeed to be abused.
Baby Help.......2005-07-18
Melissa is 17 and already has a two-year-old daughter named Cheyenne. She lives with Rudy, Cheyenne's father, and Irma, Rudy's mother.
During school one day a guest speaker talks to Melissa's class about abused and battered women and about a safe house for them. Melissa doesn't believe she is abused because after all Rudy only hits her when he's drunk. She doesn't get clarity on the situation until Rudy yells at Cheyenne and handles her roughly. Melissa leaves Rudy and goes to the home for battered women, where she meets Daphne, a girl around her age with a three-year-old son. Daphne's husband was her abuser. Daphne's time at the home was short and in just a few weeks she leaves for a halfway house to continue on her journey of healing. With Daphne gone Melissa is lonely and goes back to the only place where she never thought she belonged, to the home of Rudy and Irma.
By being back with Rudy and Irma, she is in a more dangerous situation than before. The physical abuse is worse and the mental abuse has hit a new high. Rudy controls Melissa's every move and she allows it until she hears the news on Daphne. Daphne had also been back in touch with her Husband and was found dead on her apartment floor with her son trying to wake her.
Melissa is horrified and runs from Rudy without looking back. She finds a safe haven at a friend's house until she is back in touch with her mother. Her mother allows her to stay there. Melissa finishes school and is offered a secretary job through her computer science class. I think that is was great how even though Melissa was going through a rough time she manages to finish school, get a job and still put her daughter first. The author portrays this very well because Melissa is very concerned with things like daycare constantly and even when she runs away she doesn't feed herself but she buys Cheyenne what ever she wants.
I didn't like the fact that Cheyenne was suppose to be two but was portrayed in the book as much younger. I do not believe that this is a result of Reynolds's inability to write but more to do with lack of experience with young children. You can visualize Reynolds writing because she uses lots of detail. I believe she should have done more research or observed children in a day care.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It was heartfelt and well written. When Melissa is running from Rudy and holding her daughter you could hear her deep breaths, almost feel like you were running right along side her. At one time or another, anyone would be able to relate to the book and feel the emotions that Melissa is experiencing. Because Melissa escapes Rudy, it makes the book worth reading.
Page Turner!.......2004-07-23
Marilyn Reynolds is my new favorite author! Her books capture teen issues, and all of them are so realistic. When I saw this book in the library, I decided to read it. It was the first book by Marilyn Reynolds I ever read.
~*~
'Baby Help' is the story of seventeen-year-old Melissa, who struggles with her two-year-old, Cheyenne, and her abusive boyfriend. Melissa loves Rudy, her boyfriend and the father of Cheyenne, but Rudy hits Melissa. He has for a long time, but nobody's perfect, right? That's what Melissa says, but she can't stand the fact that Rudy is so cruel. But when Rudy really hurts her, Melissa and Cheyenne go to a shelter for battered women.
This is a page-gripping, powerful story of how a teen Mom deals with her abusive lover. I reccomend this for ages 12-90! This book is great!
A powerfully written fictional treatment.......2002-05-16
The latest in the "True-to-Life from Hamilton High" series, Marilyn Reynolds' Baby Help is a novel of the nightmare of teen domestic abuse. A young mother doesn't see herself as battered because her boyfriend "only" hits her when he's been drinking... until he starts behaving abusively toward her daughter. That's when she realizes it's time to get out of the relationship - but after she reaches a shelter for battered women, she has second thoughts about leaving, which place her and her daughter's life in mortal jeopardy. Baby Help is a powerfully written fictional treatment of a very real and dangerous issue facing teens today.
Marilyn Reynolds does it again!.......2000-05-27
I first read Marilyn Reynolds' books when I was working with her son, Matt, at Alhambra High School. I was very impressed with how insightful her writing is. Baby help is no acception. I now recommend her books to my high school students and they all say the same thing - "I couldn't put it down." These books even appeal to reluctant readers because they are so well written. Everyone should read these books!
