Just for class.......2007-02-06
I needed this book for class.. So I think the chapters are a little lengthy... I get bored really quick and this put me right to sleep.
I am not an author just a student.
Excellent Text.......2007-01-30
I bought this book for a course in Health Care Human Resources. I think it is easy to read. However, many of the factors just focus on nursing issues. Not too many other issues are mentioned.

My Favorite Treasured Horses Book.......1998-02-16
Since this was my favorite Treasured Horses book I'll give it a 10. Anyways this was about Rosalie Goodman, a daughter of Vermont farmer. But it's 1864 and her father took his horse Captain, with him to the Vermont Calvary to fight for the Yankees. Rosalies family, her sister Mathilde and her brother Albert, and her mother have to raise the farm themselves. Luckily they have a little help from Ed, the farmhand. But soon Mrs. Goodman doesn't have enough for the farm's mortgage. She lets Ed go and now it the plan is for the children to stay home from school and work on the farm. But that still doesn't bring in money. So Mrs. Goodman can only think of one other thing. Sell Rosalie's precious horse, Major. Rosalie must find a plan or a compromise to keep her horse, and what about her father? Will he ever come home? Will they be able to keep their farm? Read and FIND OUT!
Another good book in the Treasured Horses series........1998-02-07
Rosalie is determined to keep her family's horse, Major, from being sold. But how else can Rosalie's mother pay the mortgage on the family's Vermont farm with Rosalie's father away fighting in the Civil War? But then Rosalie comes up with the perfect plan to keep Major and stil be able to pay the mortgage.
Book Description
A story about the thrills and perils of renovating an old farm on a shoestring, a warm and wise book about living simply in the country while pursuing the writer's craft. In 1934, in the depths of the Great Depression, Elliott Merrick and his wife bought a ramshackle farm on a Vermont hillside for $1,000. Merrick, a young writer with a healthy dose of idealism and a determination to live in the country, had just sold his first book to Maxwell Perkins at Scribner's. "I had an idea that I would be rich and famous henceforth," Merrick wrote, but added, "nothing could be farther from the truth . . . As I look back, I'm amazed that we could so blithely have crossed our great Rubicon on a spiderweb. But it turned out to be one of those fortunate mistakes--one of those fraught-with-peril enterprises that you might never have embarked on if you had known the consequences--like being born, for instance." Green Mountain Farm describes Merrick's and his family's often haphazard attempts to make a go of it on these stony, wintry acres, in a house that was falling down around them. As Merrick puts it, "We did everything wrong, but it came out right." They were dirt poor, but through it all, believed wholeheartedly in going directly after the things they wanted most: to write and to farm, however they could. A lyrical, funny, richly fulfilling book about old houses, farming, writing, and the joys of country life, this book is as fresh today as when it was originally published more than fifty years ago.
Customer Reviews:
A cozy journey to a simple way of life.......2002-12-28
Green Mountain Farm is one of my favorite books on county living. The book focuses not on "how-to" but rather on nature, eccentric characters, contented introspection, and concise philosophical musings. The book is a collection of essays describing a life that many of us dream about: leaving the city to create a happy and successful life in a beautiful countryside. Merrick writes in excellent prose, full of crystal-clear imagery, wit, and occasional humor, easily carrying the reader into his world.
Merrick converts the tedium, never-ending farm work, and other hardships of life on a remote farm into benefits. Even mistakes are fortunate. "We did everything wrong, but it turned out right." Perhaps this rosy view of such a life was mostly due to Merrick's outlook: "It's a matter of temperament, you see."
Fun.......2002-04-15
This book tells the story of a writer who settles in Vermont in 1934 with his family. It is filled with personal stories of adventures that the family had and the people that they met. Early in the book, an immigrant ski maker convinces the family to move up to the Northeast Kingdom. Merrick describes the early days of the ski industry, when people still wore homemade equipment on the slopes. He also describes his part in the 1930s survey of farming practices, contrasting his own experiences working his farm to supplement his writing income.

Book Description
In the same format and style of his prize-winning Shallow Waters, William Sargent's latest book chronicles a year spent exploring the North Woods of New Hampshire. Through words and photographs, the man about whom Publishers Weekly wrote, "With his fine descriptions and lucid explanations, Sargent joins the company of Lewis Thomas and Stephen Jay Gould as a first rate interpreter of modern science" investigates a new area's geology, ecology, and natural history. Centered primarily in the Franconia Notch, the book ranges to include Mount Washington Observatory, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Palermo Mine, and New Hampshire Audubon's Peregrine Tagging Program.
In a series of lyrical chapters, Sargent takes readers into vernal ponds and moose yards, up mountain summits and into the dens of hibernating bears. He shows that the present pattern of evergreen and deciduous trees we think of as natural is actually the result of centuries of human alteration. Describing how humans have become the newest geophysical force shaping our planet, he ruminates on how well the earth's immune system can withstand the onslaught. Offering up-to-date science on the geology and biology of New England, A Year in the Notch explains the interaction between life, rocks, and water -- the intricate dance that keeps our planet alive and makes our own existence possible.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I was looking for.......2007-01-07
I was looking for a natural history of the white mountains. Sargent's book is more of a journal with some interesting asides on biological topics but I felt I was skipping over a lot of the content looking for something new. I also did not feel much confidence in the science, where I could find it. When an authority consistently mis-spells the younger dryas as the younger drydas it doesn't instill much confidence. I'm also not sure that the asteroid that hit the Yucatan causing the extinction of the dinosaurs was the size of Texas. I don't think anybody knows that. Overall, it was a bit simplistic and wearisome to read. Not what I was looking for.
Editorial review says it all.......2001-12-28
I felt it was necessary to counter the previous reviewer's negative rating. This is a truly excellent book. The positive statements in the "editorial review" are far more indicative of this book's quality. As one who has read Bill Bryson, all I can say is it's like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges. Bryson is fluff and cute little anecdotes. Sargent is meat and solid information on natural history and geology --which is the whole point. If that's what you want, this book is indeed 5 stars!
Read Bill Bryson instead.......2001-10-21
William Sargent is kind of the poor man's Bill Bryson: he gives natural history and geologic background while trying to maintain a loose narrative structure, and he succeeds about as often as he fails.
I thought this book was going to be some kind of adventure tale of roughing it for a year, but it turns out that Sargent lives in the Notch, and kept a diary for a year. The book as a whole is kind of like the pictures in it: occasionally interesting, but fall short of being really beautiful because they're rendered in poor-quality black-and-white printing.
Book Description
Just as football evolved with the introduction of the forward pass and basketball with the development of the jump shot, so too was handicapping forever changed by the use of speed figures--and it all started with Andrew Beyer's Picking Winners. This edition features a new foreword in which the author discusses the changes that have swept the sport since the book's original publication. Picking Winners remains a classic in the field of thoroughbred racing.
Customer Reviews:
Save your time and your money.......2007-03-03
Nothing against Beyer or any other handicapping writer, but devoting significant time to the study of handicapping is a fool's errand. The mathematics of beating the game are so prohibitively against the bettor that anyone with the ability to even approach break-even would be better served dedicating his/her time to more lucrative pursuits. Regardless of the race, the only thing that is certain is that the track will take about 20% for straight bets and 25% or more for so-called "exotic" wagers. In order to just break-even, you need the ability to identify errors made by the betting public of at least 20%. For any reasonable series of races in which the market is "efficient" (i.e. the betting populace has done a reasonable job of setting pay-outs) you have zero possibilty of making a profit. Studies have consistently shown that the betting public does a remarkable job in setting an efficient price. Obviously, in order to overcome the 20% "tax", you need superior information to that which is available to the general public. Given that "Beyer" speed figures are now common currency, the advantage clearly doesn't lie here. The racing form and video of previous races are common currency as well. You could take a walk down to the paddock and try to infer something there, good luck! Unless you have the ability to somehow communicate with the horse, this isn't going to really be that fruitful. Some horses look like garbage before a race and spring to life when the gate opens. Others look like Secretariat in the paddock and like a candidate for the glue factory once they hook up at full speed w/ other nags. Another point to consider is that your betting competition includes owners, trainers, stable boys, etc. who are around the horse all the time and certainly have superior information about the horses physical and mental state. Additionally, you can only speculate as to what the owner and trainer are intending from a given race. I'm not talking "fix" here, but it's not always the case that the horse's connections have entered this race with the main objective of actually winning it. Beyer is one of the leading thoroughbred writers in America and revolutionized handicapping with his speed figures, but the difficulty in beating this game should be clearly understood before you find yourself on the proverbial boulevard of broken dreams.
Funny, but not helpful........2007-01-14
It was hard for me to give three stars for this book, because the author revolutionized handicapping. But I didn't think any of the information in the book was useful to me. However, I did enjoy the book as there were a lot of funny stories that I could relate too.
Intelligent & Enlightening horse racing information!.......2006-06-25
Andrew Beyer has been a godsend to horseplayers. He has made it easy to understand and gave us an edge when making selections. Understanding horse race betting and the past performances of horses has opened doors to novice and expert handicappers alike!
Great for picking more than just horses.......2006-05-16
I've never bet on a horse race. I've actually only been to a track once in my life (we don't have a lot of it in this part of the country), and yet I still found this book tremendously useful. Why? Well, it was recommended to me as a guide to "Picking Winners," not just in the horse racing world but in the stock market as well. And, having now read the book I can say that it has proven a more effective lesson in choosing stocks than most of the investment books I've read.
Some of the areas Beyer explores which I think apply to the stock market as well (or to any investment situation as far as I can tell) are:
-the effect different track conditions can have on a horse's performance.
-considering the effects of trainers on a horse's ability to win, lose, progress, or decline in performance.
-spotting potential cases of insider information.
-When to bet on a consistent performer over an unproven newcomer and vice versa.
-detecting signs of physical malady or deterioration early before you lose money because of them.
-How to detect and hopefully stop a losing streak once one begins.
In short this book provides an incredible amount of insight into the ways of selecting the merits of one horse (ie stock) over another without discounting the influence of other factors (the trainer, ie management, for example) on the outcome. I highly recommend this book as a source of investing knowledge and insight and, were I to take up speed handicapping, would absolutely start here.
Very Informative.......2006-04-15
Andrew Beyer takes an interesting and analytical approach to picking winners at the track, while his easy style makes this a fun and understandable read. Beyer's biggest contribution is the use of speed figures - horses that show bursts of speed in their last race are usually good bets. There's also valuable information about track conditions and other factors. As one that rarely visits the track, I didn't realize that not every horse entered in a race is expected to seriously compete. This book came out in the 1970's, and the author has added additional methods for picking winners, but it still makes an interesting read.

Book Description
Pazit Trujillo begins her freshman year at Jericho High School and quickly realizes that people in this small suburban town aren’t used to Jewish girls with strange names. Despite the whispers and stares, Pazit wants to fit in and is determined to join the school’s marching band. But when she learns they will be playing hymns and marching in the formation of a cross, she objects. Only one person in the town, drummer Billy Harper, stands up for her, and in the end both Billy and Pazit learn something about friendship and the importance of exercising one’s rights.

Drummers of Jericho.......2003-03-06
When Pazit Trujillo moves to Jericho to live with her father everything seems all right, but when she decides to join the high school band things start to go wrong. At first she meets a boy named Billy who seems to be a good guy. When she starts high school he ignores her completely, and goes of to join his popular friends. Pazit suddenly notices she is the only Jew in the school and that all the other students are Christian.
Then when band practices start she has to play all Christian music and march in the shape of a cross! She imediately tells the band director that she can't do this and ends up on the sidelines playing her music.
When her father gets involved things go wrong and the ACLU get involved. The band director quickly has to change his plans, and after all their hard work students start to turn vicious. They start mocking Pazit, calling her names, and sending her threatening messages. Billy starts to think that maybe his friends are responsible and joins Pazit's side of the arguement. He starts speaking up for her at meetings and on T.V., and he also finds out that his friends aren't really good friends at all. Billy also finds out he kind of likes Pazit and Pazit finds she feels the same.
My students loved it as did I........2000-07-13
Thanks, Carolyn Meyer, for telling us the real story behind this wonderful novel. I teach school in Utah and we all remember a similar situation a few years back with a Jewish student who has difficulty making her Mormon community understand why she didn't want to sing songs about Christ in December. I've used this book in literature partners with a great deal of success and I hope it has helped to bring down the barriers between religions in our small community.
A wonderful read, fast paced, and controversial.......1999-06-27
Rarely subjected to people of other religions besides Christianity, Jericho is surprised when Pazit Trujillo moves in with her father. Pazit is Jewish, has a weird name, and wears "different" clothes. With only one friend who does not associate with her at school, Billy, Pazit battles through her school days. At first the overall attitude towards Pazit is rude but not abnormal for a new kid. She finds herself getting strange looks, people making fun of her name and clothes, but not much else. After joining the school band, Pazit learns that the band marches in the shape of a cross and plays Christian hymns. Protesting on freedom of religion, Pazit must go through constant torture and humiliation in front of her peers, but learns the true meaning of friendship when Billy sticks up for her. This is a fast moving book, and isn't that hard to read. I am in 7th grade, and recommend it to anyone around my level.
