    Book Description

"Reading Hiring Right was like spending a highly productive afternoon in conversation with Susan J. Herman, the author. She had clear answers to my questions about hiring and anticipated many concerns that would not have occurred to me. In a concise manner she clarifies the hiring process from her experience as a business owner and consultant, from her knowledge as a researcher and teacher, and from her empathy and warmth as a trusted friend. An essential resource book with a highly personal touch." --Bob Marx, University of Massachusetts "For an employer who really wants to 'hire right,' this book is a must. It is more than a 'how-to' book; it literally helps one to think about the total process from beginning to end. Rather than viewing the hiring process as one of matching skills to jobs, Hiring Right emphasizes the importance of viewing the whole person in relation to the organization. A practical, yet conceptually sound book." --Stephen Fink, University of New Hampshire "Highly readable and technically solid--Hiring Right will be a valuable resource for practitioners and students alike--a timely contribution." --Larry Shetzer, Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, University of British Columbia "In this age of global competition, total quality management, ISO 9000, and high technology, people are the critical resource. Hiring Right's direct style makes it truly useful. I particularly like the way the author presents the various alternatives and approaches to the process of hiring people. Hiring Right will be very useful in our Corporate Headquarter's Human Resource Department as well as our member companies around the world." --Thomas P. Putnam Chairman, Markem Corporation Turnover costs an organization as much as two times the annual salary of any given position, with the average being 150% of an employee's annual salary. Hiring right the first time represents enormous savings in time, money, and anxiety, as well as embarrassment and ego damage for both the unsuccessful worker and hiring personnel. Hiring Right is a hands-on, workbook-style manual for managers of organizations (large or small, for-profit or nonprofit) who hire employees, for human resource directors who train line managers and supervisors to do the hiring, and for consultants who want to put written materials into their clients' hands. Handy and practical, this volume takes you through each step in the hiring process, including job definition, recruitment, interviewing, testing, and checking references. Each chapter briefly outlines key concepts for managers and includes several exercises and worksheets that will serve as a complete hiring strategy that can be customized to any manager's own organization and specific hiring needs. Hiring Right is essential for professionals who participate in any aspect of the hiring process and scholars and students in management studies, organization science, human resources, public administration, and education.

5 out of 5 stars This book allowed me to do my job!.......2000-10-27

I am not trained in human resources, so when my boss at a NYC non-profit gave me the project of recruiting, interviewing, and hiring 15 new employees, I felt overwhelmed. Hiring Right presented me with a framework for creating hiring policies that I could use to achieve my goals. It also provided many specific tips and bits of advice. An absolutely necessary guide to hiring.

5 out of 5 stars Easy-to-use techniques for finding the right employees.......1998-04-30

I found this book to be super useful. Lots of information about how to design your interview process to get exactly the right people for the job. From finding employees to interviewing to signing them.

    A great reference.

          Book Description

Cluster was one of the two missions - the other being the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) - constituting the Solar Terrestrial Science Programme (STSP), the first `cornerstone' of ESA's Horizon 2000 Programme. After the catastrophic Ariane-5 accident on 4 June 1996 which destroyed the four Cluster spacecraft, the European Space Agency Science Programme Committee gave approval to refurbish the spare Cluster spacecraft and make it ready for flight. This new spacecraft, considered to be the first of a new fleet, is called Phoenix. In the meantime various options to repeat the Cluster four-point measurements are being studied. Since Phoenix, as the fifth Cluster spacecraft, will be equipped with the spare Cluster experiments, the instrumentation articles in this book are still appropriate to the new mission. Furthermore, the objectives of the recovery mission, the ground systems, the ground observation program and the theory and modelling efforts all remain unchanged. Thus this series of articles will continue to be essential to the Cluster community and to the general scientific community as the recovery mission is implemented.

          Book Description

With the Winter 2006 Olympics bringing Canada our first gold medal in curling, the sport's popularity is at an all-time high in this country, and its international presence is growing. In the five years since the publication of the first edition of Curling For Dummies, Canadian attendance at curling tournaments and viewership of televised curling has skyrocketed. Twenty new nations have joined the World Curling Federation.

Curling’s profile isn't the only thing that's changed since the first edition was published — so too have the game's rules, equipment, and technique. Profiles of players, listings of television coverage and events, and memorable curling shots also need to be updated for the second edition. As the most comprehensive and up-to-date book available, Curling For Dummies will remain the ultimate curling book, for fans, players, and coaches.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for new and experienced curlers.......2007-04-27

I picked up curling just after the 2006 Olympics. This book does a pretty good job covering all the aspects of curling, from scoring, sweeping, delivery, and more. This book won't replace a lesson from an experienced curler, but its certainly a good reference once you've gotten out on the ice. This book has the Triangle Curling Club Seal of Approval, if there is such a thing :)

5 out of 5 stars any new curler should read this book.......2007-02-11

As a new curler, this book was a perfect companion to actually playing. It had everything you need to learn the sport. A must read if you want to curl.

          4 out of 5 stars Jessica's Review.......2007-01-12

This book really helped me out. I was doing a research project on Curling and it really came in handy. It had all the information in it that I needed.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful to a dummy like me.......2006-07-11

I had no idea about the sport whatsoever but having read the book I feel like a professional (even though I have not tried playing it yet!). The book is well-organized, very informative and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing 'Dumb' about it!.......2006-01-26

The book is great as a stand alone, or as a backup for those of us who have embarked on our curling careers already, and need a little extra help remembering all the phrases, shots, rules, etc.
It also gives some background and history on alot of the aspects of curling, which help you better understand the sport as a whole. Anyone who thinks curling is easy needs to sit down and read the book and sign up for a class. There's nothing 'easy' or 'dumb' about it, but you will meet alot of very interesting people and gain a new respect for the people who have been doing this their entire lives.

1 out of 5 stars not accurate in the restaurant category.......1999-08-13

It seemed to happen all too frequently - restaurants listed were no longer in business or had moved to a different location. In one evening, four of the five restaurants I tried were closed, and in some cases, had been closed quite a while.

this was a big disappointment as most other Access guides have been great

Letters to the publisher have gone unanswered. I'd seriously consider never buying another Access Guide on the basis of this one.

If you're unfamiliar with the Access Guide series, the text and maps are keyed to each other by numbers. However, the maps printed in our copy of the 4th edition are unchanged from our copy of the 3rd edition, while the numbers in the text have changed as entries were added and deleted. As a consequence, the numbers on the maps often bear no relation to the numbers in the text, making the book less useful. Try to find the third edition -- not that much changed in the fourth edition -- or wait a few years for the fifth edition. It's a shame, the Access Guides are generally among the most useful for the casual tourist. Don't try looking at the URL given on the back cover of the 4th edition for corrections -- that web site has no content. E-mail to the publisher has not elicited an acknowledgement of the problem after ten days.

                              Book Description

                              Unearthly Discoveries

Matt glanced at the table, mesmerized when the mummy's fists clenched. Barely held on by the quick sutures Emma had taken through the dead flesh, Pasebakhaenniut's head turned.... The mummy's eyeless gaze fastened on Narada, who stood frozen in awe.

                              "It's alive!" Gabriel shouted.

If Matt Hunter hadn't seen it, he'd never have believed it: a mummy -- barely stitched together, come to life. And that's just the first of the outrageous discoveries.

As Matt's campaign of vengeance against the evil Lucius Creighdor continues, he and his faithful league delve deeper and deeper into a fantastical world that reveals grisly and extraordinary clues. The answers are coming faster now, as murder abounds and the team unearths hideous secret experiments.

But are they truly prepared to witness the horrific nature of what they have found -- no matter how close it brings them to their goals? Or...to their end?
