    Book Description

An important contribution to the human resources literature, this book is written for personnel and training managers who need specific information on how to recognize and deal effectively with "problem" employees. Based on Martin's experience with hundreds of employees in a variety of work settings over a 22-year period, the volume describes a number of employee types and the overt/covert behaviors they manifest, explains the personality dynamics involved, and offers practical advice regarding intervention strategies that can be effectively used in dealing with these employees. Throughout, case studies are used to illustrate typical behaviors and possible solutions. Today's employment climate generally precludes the use of personality tests on prospective employees, and problems often surface after the fact when termination may be difficult. Thus, Martin focuses particularly on how to work with such employees to help them understand the counterproductive nature of their work behavior and how to place them within the most productive organizational setting possible. Following several introductory chapters, each subsequent chapter is devoted to a particular type of problem employee--primadonna, rebel, backstabber, "that's not my job," etc. The individual chapters combine case examples with a collective discussion of behaviors, dynamics, and intervention strategies offering the busy practitioner both a better understanding of certain employee behaviors and a framework by which to deal with these individuals within the job and organizational realm. The book also offers suggestions for recognizing disruptive personality types at the interview stage.

    3 out of 5 stars A Fun Book...Not Too Serious.......2003-02-04

Read this work several times. It is obvious a fun book with brief chapters dealing with a variety of "common" personality types found in the work place. Even though it contains psychological things, it appears to be primarily a "tongue-in-cheek" book using Greek Mythology names for the subject employee types. Of course, the "died-in-the-wool" Psychologists or Management Experts will criticize the book as being trite, lame, and not "backed by scientific research." However, my honest opinion is that this book was intended as both a fun piece and some diverted reading for individuals working in management, personnel psychology, and human resources. It also is a touch candid in the comparisons and even "arrow shooting" at certain employee types that are either irritating and/or whatever. Try it! You'll hopefully like it as I did.

This book is designed and intended as a source of ideas on how to think about oak forests as responsive ecosystems. Divided into two sections the book focuses on oak ecosystems in the United States as well as providing much application to other regions such as Europe and the Mediterranean. The first section includes chapters on the ecological characteristics and distribution of oak species and the various kinds of oak forests in the United States, differences among them and how they have been classified. The second section includes chapters on site productivity, stand development, silviculture, and growth and yield.

5 out of 5 stars scholarly, readable, useful, and unique.......2004-01-29

Foresters and other land managers usually have to rely on shelves and boxes full of books, reprints, bulletins, and notes for the information they need about the ecosystem they are concerned with. Here, between two hard covers, is a great wealth of carefully selected, clearly organized, and creatively synthesized knowledge dealing with the biology and management of American oak forests and woodlands.Chapter titles will indicate the diversity of subject matter: Ecology, Regeneration Ecology (flowering, fruiting, and reproduction characteristics), Regeneration Ecology (population dynamics),Site Productivity and Stand Development, Development of Natural Stands, Self-Thinning and Stand Density, Even-Aged Silvicultural Methods, Uneven-Aged Silvicultural Methods, Multi-Resource Management, Growth and Yield, plus seven appendices. There are numerous sub-topics within each chapter, greatly amplifying the diversity of information. There are many illustrations, graphs, flow-charts, and photos. Each chapter has its own lit cited, about 90% of which are from 1990 or later. As a tree biologist I read the sections on acorn dispersal, vegetative reproduction, and growth, and found all to be clear, accurate, and current. This excellent technical volume should serve as a model for the digestion of information for all significant forest tree genera.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Shifley is a ROCKSTAR!.......2003-02-27

This book, the Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks, absolutely rocked my world. Never have I read such a moving, overwhelming discussion of oak trees. Wow. I may seem a little biased because author Steve Shifley is my rockstar father (yeah, Dad!), but this coming-of-age tale of oak trees in a changing, oppressive urban culture is truly a tearjerker. Well worth the [$] I paid for it. Buy as many copies as you can, because all the proceeds go to fund my college education. Once again, READ THIS BOOK! It'll alter your worldview- forever.

                Description:
The conversion of an even-aged (single tiered canopy) stand to a multi-tiered (uneven-aged) structure can be accomplished by vertically partitioning growing space among canopy layers. A successful example of this methodology was accomplished in an upland oak stand in the Ozark Highlands of Missouri, USA. The conversion process on the study area was initiated in 1961 and completed with the establishment of a third cohort resulting from a harvest in 2000. The prescription calls for allocating growing space among three canopy tiers (overstory, midstory, and understory) at a ratio of 3:2:1 based on regional stocking charts. This distribution ensures full site utilization and maintains approximately 60% of stand basal area in the sawtimber size classes while reserving sufficient growing space for the recruitment of new cohorts as needed. Further, the conversion prescription facilitates transition of the stand into a maintenance phase of management following completion of stand conversion; the 3:2:1 ratio equates to a negative-exponential diameter distribution defined by a q-value of 1.7 (for 5cm diameter classes). During conversion, however, a q-value based target diameter distribution should never be used to determine the cut. Rather, each cohort is treated as a separate even-aged entity where proper spacing, species, and stem form are the factors determining removal.

                    Book Description

Used by humans since ancient times, evergreen oak forests still cover extensive mountain areas of the Mediterranean Basin. These broadleaved evergreen forests occupy a transitional zone between the cool-temperate deciduous forest biome and the drier Mediterranean pine forests and shrublands. Slow growing and casting a deep shade, the sclerophyllous holm oak (Quercus ilex) absolutely dominates the closed canopy of many Mediterranean evergreen oak forests. This is a synthesis of 20 years of research on the structure, function, and dynamics of holm oak forests in two intensively studied experimental areas in Spain. By combining observational measurements at the leaf, tree, plot, and catchment scales with field experiments and modelling, the authors explore how these forests cope with strong water limitation and repeated disturbances.

                      Description:
In mature forests of the Ozark Highlands, MO, USA, we evaluated fire effects on the survival and growth of tree seedlings and saplings (i.e., advance regeneration), and used this information to develop species-specific models that predict the probability of survival based on initial tree size and number of times burned. A 1000ha forest area was divided into five units that were randomly chosen to receive one, three or four dormant season surface fires during the period 1998-2001. A total of 2741 stems of advance regeneration, ranging in size up to 15cm in basal diameter and 15m in height, were permanently marked and measured in all the units. One and four years after initiating the burn treatments, height of survivors was measured. Although most stems experienced shoot dieback following the first fire, survival was high (>90%) for all species as most trees produced new shoots from the living rootstock. The probability of surviving one fire was significantly related to initial stem size (basal diameter and height). With additional burning, the probability of survival increased with increasing initial tree size, and decreased as the number of burns increased. For a given initial diameter, black oak and post oak had the highest probability of survival after three or more burns (e.g., 88% for 5cm stems), followed closely by white oak (80%), and scarlet oak (60%). For similar sized stems, flowering dogwood had low probabilities of survival (e.g., 25%), and blackgum was devastated by frequent burning (2%). Sassafras showed the greatest tolerance to burning, and more than 90% of stems survived three or more fires over a 4-year period. The probability of survival significantly decreased with increasing number of burns for most species. However, frequency of burning had less influence on the probability of survival for larger (e.g., >=7.6cm) diameter advance regeneration than it did for smaller stems. One fire significantly altered the height distribution of advance regeneration, concentrating most of the stems in the smallest height class ( <1m tall). Recovery of height was slow even 4 years after a burn due to the suppression of regeneration by the overstory canopy that averaged 18m^2/ha in basal area (69% stocking). Overall, repeated burning in the dormant season reduces understory structure and favors oak advance regeneration. Survival models can be used to plan for woodland and savanna restoration.

                          Book Description

This comprehensive synthesis systematically covers the entire range of natural and managed oak forests in the highlands of tropical America. Originally, these forests were widely distributed, but largely through human impact large parts have disappeared and the remaining patches are under increasing threat.

For the first time, aspects as diverse as the paleo-ecology, biogeography, stand structure and composition, biodiversity, population dynamics, ecosystem dynamics, fragmentation and recovery, conservation and sustainable use of Neotropical montane oak forests are treated in a coherent manner. Providing a thorough understanding of ecological patterns and processes that determine the structure and functioning of these magnificent forests, this volume can serve as a sound basis for sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in general.

                              Description:
Three linear mixed-effect models for wood density were constructed with average ring density data measured by X-ray microdensitometry on 10427 heartwood rings collected from 82 sessile oaks sampled in five French regions (Alsace, Lorraine, Orne et Sarthe, Allier, Loir-et-Cher). Two types of forest management (coppice-with-standards and high forest) and three site qualities were represented in each region. A model (1) between air dry wood density and radial tree growth was established. Model (2), with radial growth and tree environment (region, silviculture, site quality, and their interactions) as fixed effects, tested whether wood density varied with changing region, silviculture, or site quality when tree radial growth was kept constant. Model (3), derived from model (2), consisted of the effects or interactions found to be significant in model (2). The effects specific to a tree were accounted for by a random tree effect in the three models. We calculated that the fixed effects in models (1), (2) and (3) explained, respectively, 48, 50 and 48% of the total variation of wood density and that the random tree effects were responsible for 31, 29, and 31% of the total variation of wood density, respectively. The comparison of the three models indicated that the fixed effects of the region, silviculture, and site quality and the interactions among them, all present in model (2) or partly present in model (3), explain only a small percentage (2% and less than 1%, respectively) of the total wood density variation when tree radial growth is statistically controlled. Consequently, wood density hardly changed with changing environment and type of forest management when ring width and cambial age were kept constant. It implied that compressed trees in high forests and trees with relatively free radial growth from coppice-with-standards follow similar wood density mixed models. Thus, a single wood density model can be used to predict wood density efficiently in oak stems for several situations with contrasting silviculture, site quality, and geographic location.

Oliver Gasper finds an ancient magazine with a 'disappearing' formula in it. Desperate to dodge a French test, he tries it out . . . and it works! The problem is, somebody's stolen the magazine and Oliver can't remember the words he needs to get back again. Fed-up with being trampled underfoot and trapped in bus doors, Oliver turns to Nicky Chew for help. Nicky's the most invisible visible boy in school, staying out of trouble so the teachers never notice him. Together they set out to find the missing formula. But will Oliver ever be seen again?

Be careful what you wish for. When British titles are imported into the United States, they tend to be put through a thorough editing process. Words that may mean one thing in one country may be offensive or completely unintelligible in another. This was the logic behind changing many of the words in the "Harry Potter" books and is a practice that continues without interruption to this day. Or so I thought. Picking up Ian Whybrow's, "The Unvisibles" I was shocked to find that almost nothing in this book was changed when it was brought across the ocean. Not the cover art. Not phrases like, "taking the mick" or words like "gob-smacked". When "Harry Potter" was edited I complained to the high hills. Now it seems as if Holiday House has dared me to stand by my words. They've taken a slight risk in not Americanizing their latest import. A risk I admire and stand conflicted in the face of.

Two boys stand at opposite ends of the personality spectrum. On the one hand you have Oliver Gasper. He's tall and skinny with sticky-out ears and a bright shock of orange hair. Oliver's a troublemaker, a goof-off, and a generally nice but wayward guy. He can't concentrate for more than half a second and you could definitely call him ADD with little argument. On the other hand, there is Nicky Chew. Nicky's carefully cultivated himself to be the most normal kid in the world. Though he always gets all his test answers correct, then makes sure to ascribe incorrect answers once or twice so he won't draw attention to himself. He has normal clothes, normal hair, and you wouldn't look twice at him if he were standing in a line-up. Though both boys live next door to one another, they've never even had a conversation. That is, until Oliver finds the magazine. The magazine that has an article that holds the key to turning yourself invisible. The magazine that is stolen by a nasty colleague of Oliver's father, leaving the boy invisible and without a hope of turning back. Now the boy that no one can see and the boy that no one ever bothers to see will have to team up to get Oliver back to visible health and restore his father's failing business. It's merely all in a day's work for the Unvisibles.

The plot and the writing are wonderful, by the way. Couldn't be sweeter. Now I'm as Anglophilic as the best of them. I love me my Jane Austen and BBC productions. But more than once I, a twenty-eight-year-old woman, found myself having a bit of difficulty parsing some of Whybrow's more creative exhibits. The book is a thick read. Wading through the British aphorisms and turns of phrase, at least at the start, makes for slow going. This partly has to do with Whybrow's fine grasp of British slang. It rolls trippingly off his pen into sentences like, "Nah, he'll just smack you up a bit, show you he's the top man, like". His dialogue is superb. It does, however, require a reader that is willing to mentally translate phrases like, "The normal Friday feeling in the air was tinged with niggle and frustration", over and over again.

But you can't deny the man's wordplay. There's nothing worse that riding the subway reading a children's book and coming to a passage that makes you chortle and snort loudly at rush hour. That was my particular reaction to a scene in which invisible Oliver and embarrassed Nicky eat at a high-end buffet. Nicky has to keep returning to the head waiter for more food. "Having to place himself in the full glare of every other customer's attention in the restaurant while he presented his plate over and over at the counter like some demented Oliver Twist was his idea of hell". I loved that. His characters are believable and awfully realistic. The story is well-plotted and turns out beautifully by the end. There's slapstick but it never comes off as crude or anything but rousingly funny. If Hollywood doesn't buy the rights off of this puppy soon then they are bigger fools than even I had thought.

Sadly, I don't think American kids are going to take much to "The Unvisibles". I can see why Holiday House thought it might make for a really fun and funny addition to our library shelves. And I cheer on heartily any kid who wishes to tackle this story and all the ramifications of invisibility that come with it. But this is definitely not a book for reluctant readers and even hard-core devourers of fiction may find themselves struggling with it from time to time. Definitely worth taking a gander at but not a sure-fire thing.

3 out of 5 stars Ian Whybrow is a very descriptive writer! Perhaps too descriptive..........2006-03-15

The first time I read it, I thought that the book was satisfying, hilarious and interestingly creative. However, when I was in the middle of it, I thought that is was ever so boring so I had no choice and I had to to give up on it. I do not understand wht Ian Whybrow purposely made Nicky's and Oliver's personalties "on opposite ends of the personality spectrum" . I really cannot imagine Nicky and Oliver (with two personalties so different) can possibliy make friends. Even though they did become friends in the book , I think it is a bit bizarre. If I wrote a story entitled The Unvisibles, I would have made their personalities more alike.

Ian Whybrow's writing style is very descriptive, that embroiders a clear watercolor taapestry in my head. Some of his written phrases (to me) is very funny, such as sentences like "he did it so thoroughly, as if he was a nasal Christopher Columbus, exploring time, unitl is dad gave his shoulder a shove and told him to pack it in." when I read that in my brain I feel like saying "why didn't I write that?"
