Fun and Funny.......2007-01-15

After purchasing this as a "gag gift" for my mother, I had to get one for myself. This calendar makes me smile everyday simply because it is silly and light. I have mine on my refridgerator and no one walks through my kitchen without commenting on it. You don't have to be a farmer or a collector of chicken memorabilia to enjoy this. You simply have to be willing to step out into the silly side and enjoy it.

I needed a new calendar for my cube at work and was rummaging through the discount bin, and I found this beauty. What luck! The cover, title and Vegas-style "lights" as edging hooked me. What better way to get a chuckle?
The calendar, despite what I consider ridiculously laughable content, is high-quality. The photos are top notch, the pages have a good weight and a semi-glossy finish. I actually think I can start to appreciate these fowl over the coming year. Who knew?

This book is awsome!!! it not only shows you how to do difforent moves in japenes sword fighting but it also teaches you the backround or history of the sword style what the difforent swords are called and it teaches you at least 5 moves for each difforent one. All around this was a very good book and i'm glad i found it.

A GREAT BOOK!.......2006-03-01

I have been waiting days for this book, and it finally came today. Honestly, I expected it to have your standard sword exercises and cuts, but it contains stances and techniques that I have never even heard of, while some are familiar to me. Thanks to having a hardwood bokuto (which I also purchased off of this website), I can now incorporate new exercises into my practice. Even though Hatsumi-Sensei is a ninja, he is well-versed in the culture of the samurai and the sword as well. I recommend it to all aspiring swordsmen.

Samurai as a spiritual warrior.......2006-02-11

Acclaimed samurai of old would while away their elder years writing scrolls to impart their wisdom unto the next generation. These scrolls, a mix of martial arts technique and personal philosophy, would then be the foundation for the various fighting schools. The most famous and acclaimed of these are Musashi Miyamoto's "The Book of Five Rings" and Tsunetomo Yamamoto's "Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai."

Hatsumi Masaaki is determined to continue in this tradition, walking as much as possible in the path of the Sword Saints, the near-mythical warriors of the warring states period. This latest book, "Japanese Sword Fighting: Secrets of the Samurai," is a blend of martial arts photography and technique, ancient scrolls showing the heritage of this kind of work, warrior philosophies and ruminations on the Japanese language and how one can use it to unlock the fighter's path.

One thing this book is not is a history lesson. Anyone seeking further insight into the authentic samurai would be severely disappointed. Hatsumi's interpretation is not one of facts and dates, of reference books and University lectures. He is more interested in the spiritual and allegorical warrior, one who sharpens his soul so that it is straight and upright like the sword that is his symbol. Those who have read other of Hatsumi's books will know more or less what to expect, but its probably not the best book for a new reader.

What you do get, is heavy doses of how to be a warrior with your entire life, not just in the dojo. An inheritor of shared wisdom, passed down from his master Takamatsu Sensei, Hatsumi seems to want to share this with a wider audience and continue the link. Along with this are some striking photographs, a collection of ancient scrolls and photos of Hatsumi and his partners, wearing impressive sets of full samurai armor, demonstrating fighting techniques with a variety of weaponry.

Much of Hatsumi's wisdom comes from the Japanese language itself. The use of Chinese characters, where each individual character has a different meaning, is heavily tied up with what he has to say. One instance of this is his ruminations on the word shiki, which can alternately be read as "wisdom," "to respect the manner of death," or "the importance of determination." Hatsumi brings these together to mean that a warrior finds wisdom by respecting the manner of death, and through personal determination. While not necessary, those with Japanese language skills will be able to read "Japanese Sword Fighting" with a much greater depth.

Followers of Hatsumi will definitely find some insight into their sensei in this book, as will those who see martial arts as more of a spiritual path than a fighting technique. Casual readers, or those interested in the historical samurai and their fighting arts, would do best to seek elsewhere.

Angelica Cookson Potts, better known as Angel, wants to be a chef when she graduates from high school. Food is her one love, something her stick-thin mother cannot understand. She is larger than all of her friends, and the Love of her Life, Adam, the dishiest boy in school, so she decides to make Major Life Changes. She starts with an all-cabbage diet, which produces rather nasty results. Then she starts going to the gym. But when the fashion show rolls around, she realizes that her size isn't such a bad thing after all. Complete with recipes, this book is about accepting who you are. It is very funny, and readers of all ages and sizes will enjoy it.

Treats and Teenagers.......2006-05-24

When I read this book I was amazed. In this book it portrays the character of a teenager, who's not the thinnest, smartest, or prettiest. But shes got an awesome personality. In the book Angelica Cookson Potts tries several diets, which lead to disasters, and failure. For you see, her mother is an ex-model who's as thin as a stick and Angelica is a little chunky. In the book she discovers she's in love with a guy who ends up to be a total slug. With a fashion show coming up she's worried out of her mind. She doesn't have to model though. She's in charge of the food and seating. When things don't turn out as planned everything changes. All through out the book you meet interesting, weird, and straight out hilarious character's. All with there own personalities. I think that was a strong part of the book. The difference in the characters, and how they all ended up fitting together perfectly. What I didn't like was the mothers character, she real insensitive to Angelica and that annoyed me. This book was amazing and did a good job at portraying a character of a teenager.

With her sagging bustline, concerns about the upcoming fashion show at school, and worries about how the Valentine's Day dance will turn out, Angelica Cookson Potts is not having a fun time being fourteen. An aspiring cook, Angel tries to solve her problems with batches of fudge and portions of "dead sophisticated tiny choux pastry puffs," but her attempts prove insuccessful. Can she ever learn to to be truly happy with herself, her life in general, and her cups that runneth over?

This book definitely has its funny moments (and even a fabulous fudge recipe included). Any book that makes such excellent use of British slang ("squodged" and "wobbly bits" are among the linguistic gems) has some laugh-out-loud appeal. And "My Cup Runneth Over" is certainly the kind of breezy little read that's great when one just needs a mindless period of relaxation. (...)
This book is a little like a plain old Hershey's milk chocolate bar-pretty good when you're eating it but completely forgettable when it's done. If you're a teenage girl looking for a series with punch, grab Ann Brashares' "Sisterhood of Traveling Pants" books or Meg Cabot's "Princess Diaries" set.

I loved this book for the most part. Angel really is just like a young Bridget Jones. It is funny and realistic and enjoyable. The secondary characters also made the book so enjoyable - especially her parents and Mrs. Something-Hyphenated and her kids. I hope someday someone makes a movie of this. The only reason I don't give it a 5 is because sometimes it does go overboard with the fat jokes. But overall the comedy and romantic quotients were high!

Wow! My Cup Runneth Over by Cherry Whytock is one of the best books I have ever read. I loved the way the book is illustrated. Angel and her friends seem like such down to earth people that you wish you could meet them for real.
